Perfect Family (AU)
Makkari. She was the fastest person alive. Growing up she always was the fastest at everything. Reading, homework, and most of all, running. She was a god art sports, she joined her cross country team in high school, and even though she was the smallest on her team, she was the fastest.
That’s where she met him.
Druig. President of the chess team. Quiet, reserved, the most introverted person she had ever met, but the smartest one too. He was an intellectual, maybe not the most social person, but he would do anything for her.
So they were what people called “couples goals”. They went to the library for study dates, he learned sign language for her, they went to prom, graduated, went to the same college. That’s where Druig popped the question, the most important question of his life.
“Will you marry me Makkari?”
Makkari nodded excitedly as Druig slid a ring onto her finger. He stood up from his kneeling position and wrapped his arms around her waist, bringing her into a tender kiss.
Their wedding was a thing of beauty. Everyone had a good time. Druig and Makkari could not have been happier.
Druig came home from work that day more tired than ever. He was studying to get a psychologist degree. He was always so interested in the human mind and wanted to get a job where he could observe and study people for a living. That being said, when he wasn’t in grad school studying to get his masters, he worked a part time job a construction site, building homes for communities.
Hey you’re home! How was your day? Makkari happily signed, pecking her husband on the cheek.
“I’m good, just exhausted. Professor A gave us an essay due tomorrow, then I had a long day at the site” Druig said flopping on the couch.
Well I made tacos for dinner she signed.
“My favorite? What’s the special occasion?” He chuckled.
Can’t I just make my husband a nice meal?
“Of course, thank you Makkari” he says getting up and kissing her, before sitting down at the table. They currently live in a small apartment complex with a kitchen and table, bathroom, small storage room, and bedroom.
She placed a plate in front of him and he began eating, she watches him intently, waiting for him to look up from his meal.
“Why aren’t you eating Kari?”
I’m not hungry.
“Are you feeling okay?”
I did throw up this morning.
“What? Babe, you should have told me. I wouldn’t have stopped and got soup on my way home”
I’m okay. I’m better than okay.
“I’m confused. You just said you threw up this morning”
Druig, there’s something I need to tell you.
“What? What is it?” He asked worriedly standing up.
You should stay sitting…just…wait here she signs and gets up and grabs a bag.
“What’s going on? You’re scaring me”
I have a surprise for you.
“A good surprise or a bad surprise?”
I don’t know.
He cautiously reaches into the bag and takes out a small box.
“What’s this?”
Oh my god Druig, just open it Makkari signs quickly.
Druig raises an eyebrow and opens the box, his eyes widen when he see’s a pregnancy test. He slowly picks it up and reads that it’s positive.
“Makkari…”
Surprise! I’m pregnant. She signs to him. Makkari had a nervous expression on her face, while Druig was in complete shock.
His eyes were as wide as saucers as he stayed completely mute.
Druig, say something please. Makkari signed worriedly and goes to stand next to him.
Druig looks up at Makkari and brings her in to the tightest hug she’s ever gotten from him.
“I haven’t been this happy since you agreed to marry me” he whispers, tears coming out from his eyes.
So you’re happy about it?
“Of course I’m happy! I’m over the moon!” Druig yells happily picking Makkari up and spinning her around. “How long have you known?”
I’ve had my suspicions for a couple days, but I took a couple tests today, and they came back positive.
“I can’t believe you’re pregnant with my baby. Makkari, we’re gonna be parents” he says gently putting his hand on her stomach.
I know, I’m so nervous Druig.
“Don’t be nervous. We’re gonna be amazing parents! And I’ll be there for you, every step of the way”
Makkari smiled at him as she wrapped her arms around his neck, he rested his on her waist and pulled her in.
“I love you Makkari”
I love you too Druig.
Druig’s eyes widen as he suddenly realized something. “Oh my god, you shouldn’t be on your feet too long, sit down on the couch”.
Is this what you’re gonna be like while I’m pregnant?
“Like what? Do you want anything? Anything you want”
I want McDonalds. Extra large fries and chicken nuggets, oh and a milkshake too.
“Okay babe, I’ll get you all of that. I’ll be back in 15 minutes or less. Don’t move” Druig said getting up and grabbing his keys,
Makkari chuckled to herself as she rested her hand on her stomach. Perfectly happy.
I can’t wait to meet you little one.
9 months later…
“Can I do anything for you beautiful?
Yeah, why’d you get me pregnant you jerk.
“Ummm, it technically was a two person effort” Druig responded.
Are you seriously arguing with me right now. I swear to god Druig I will end you. Makkari signed resting her hand on her large tummy.
“I’m sorry babe. But look on the bright side, we are so close to meeting this one” he said rubbing her stomach.
I guess you’re right…Can I have more fries please?
“Anything for you beautiful” Druig responds. He turns his back to get a portion of frozen fries that he has stocked up in the freezer, alongside several tubs of ice cream.
He was about to start cooking them when he heard Makkari groan in pain behind him. He turned to face her and saw her clutching her stomach.
“Makkari!!? What happened? What’s wrong?” He ran over rubbing her back comfortingly.
Druig…my water just broke.
His eyes widened as he started to panic. “Oh my god, the baby’s coming. It’s coming now! Oh god okay, where are the to go bags? We need the to go bags! You should sit down or stand up. Or I don’t know!”
Druig…honey, calm down, the bags are by the door, let’s just go to the hospital and meet our child.
Druig calmed down and helped Makkari out of the apartment, grabbing the bags in the process.
When they arrived at the hospital Makkari was rushed away into a hospital gown. They soon got into the delivery room and Druig clutched Makkari’s hand while she was delivering.
“You’re almost there Makkari! Just push a little more!” Druig yelled.
Makkari shot him a dirty look, she couldn’t sign but her eyes conveyed the message enough. She squeezed his hand as hard as she could, he would be lying if he said that it didn’t hurt a little bit.
A few hours later, a crying baby was put into Makkari’s arms.
“Congratulations, it’s a girl”
Makkari could not contain her happiness, Druig kissed her on the forehead as he admired his daughter in her arms.
“You did such a good job Kari” he said dabbing a cloth on her forehead, wiping away some sweat.
Makkari’s eyes started watering as she looked at the tiny human in her arms. She kissed her daughters forehead and just admired her beauty. She looked up at Druig and he kissed her tenderly on the lips. She gently passed their daughter up to him and he held her close to his heart.
“Hi there little one, I’m your dad, and this here, is you’re beautiful, beautiful, mother”
Makkari laughed as she leaned against Druig’s side, watching her gently bounce her daughter.
“Do you have a name in mind, love?”
Makkari nods as she signs each letter individually.
“Skylar?” Druig inquires.
She nods, It means eternal life and strength.
“Skylar…I love it. I love her. I love you” he says sitting at the side of her bed. The two looked into each others eyes and then continued staring at their daughter. Their perfect little family.
So now we are at present day. Where Makkari thought she was the fastest person alive, until she found out that a toddler on a sugar high is the fastest being on Earth.
Skylar, that’s enough! It’s time for bed Makkari signed to her daughter.
Skylar had lighter skin than Makkari, but her mothers hair and her fathers brain. Even at the age of four, she was fluent in sign language and signed up for any competition she was of age for.
“I’m not tired though mom!” Skylar signed and spoke at the same time.
How did you get this hyper anyway young lady?
“Dad took me out for ice cream earlier because I got first place in the spelling bee”
Makkari rolled her eyes at the mention of Druig…of course he did.
Right on cue, Druig entered the room holding a brown bag.
“Hello love!” He says kissing her on the cheek.
Care to explain why your daughter is all hyper?
His eyes widen as he guilty rubs the back of his neck. “I may or may not have taken her out for ice cream”
Makkari stares at him, hands on hips staring at him in a disapproving expression.
“But I got you something too! Chicken nuggets and fries. Your favorite” he says holding up the bag.
She rolls her eyes and smiles at him, kissing his cheek, Fine, but you’re dealing with her when she’s cranky later.
“Deal” he says hugging her and turning to face Skylar. He goes over to her and picks her up and throws her up and down.
“You were right daddy! Mommy wasn’t mad cause you got her food!” Skylar said happily.
Makkari looked back at them, eyebrow raised. “She didn’t mean that love” Druig said quickly before turning to look at Skylar and shake his head. “We don’t say that stuff in front of mommy”
Skylar got the message and brought her fingers to her lips and shook her head.
“What do you say young lady? How we get some sleep?” Druig asked.
“But I want to play!” Skylar whined.
“Okay then let’s play!” Druig said zooming her around the small apartment. "there we played, now go to sleep”
“That was not playing. I’m a big girl now. Big girls stay up late” Skylar protested.
“Yes, but sleep is good”
“How?”
“They let the brain rest. You’ve used your brain so much lately that it’s tired and needs to sleep” Druig said.
“My brain is tired? I don’t feel tired.” Skylar said.
“I think it is, you see you’re sleeping right now.” Druig said making fake snoring sounds.
“That’s you daddy! Not me”
Makkari then got an idea and walked over to be with her family.
Okay, then you can stay awake. Don’t sleep. Makkari signed.
“Really?!”
Yeah. Mommy and Daddy will just be here kissing and saying how much we love each other. Makkari signed bringing Druig’s face towards him and kissing him.
“Ewww gross! Okay I’m tired. Time for bed please. Will you guys tuck me in?”
“Of course we will darlin” Druig says gently placing her down and watching her little legs waddle to her bed. They had converted the storage space into a nursery and eventually, Skylar’s bed.
“That was smart of you beautiful Makkari”
Reverse psychology. Works every time. Thought you were the brain guy. Makkari said smugly.
“Oh you little…” Druig said picking Makkari up and spinning her around the apartment.
The two laughed and walked towards their daughters room. Skylar was already in her pajamas sitting upright in her bed.
“All right Skylar, time for bed” Druig said bringing the blankets up and tucking her in.
“Can you tell me a story?” Skylar asked, with big blue eyes.
Druig looked at his daughter and knew he could never say no to her. “Of course, what story do you want tonight?”
“The story of the speedster and the mind guy” Skylar replied confidently.
“Oh, you mean the story of the Eternals”
“Yeah that one! It’s my favorite!” She said happily.
Druig looked over and Makkari and she smiled and nodded.
Long ago, way before you were born lived these powerful beings called The Eternals. They were a team of superhero’s who protected the world from danger. Two of these superheroes had a special connection.
“One of them could do mind control. He could read minds and control people if he wanted to. He was an intellectual-”
“What’s an intellectual?” Skylar interrupted.
You can’t use big words with her yet. She might be smart, but she’s still four. Makkari signed to him.
“Okay, he was…a really smart person. And loved to show it off, but what he loved even more, was a certain other eternal”
Yes, he was in love with an eternal with the power of super speed. She was the fastest being on planet Earth. Not even a cheetah could beat her.
“Wow, a cheetah, that’s fast!” Skylar exclaimed sleepily.
“It sure is. They loved each other very much. So much that they left the team and started a life of their own”
Yep, they got married, had a kid, and will live happily for the rest of their life
“The end” Druig whispers careful to not to stir too much.
Skylar had fallen asleep quietly in her bed, nestling her head into her pillow.
Druig leaned down and kissed her on the forehead, Makkari did the same and stroked her hair out of her face.
The two got up gently and tip toed out of the room. Druig placed his hand on Makkari’s waist as he guided her out of the doorway.
Where did you hear that story again?
“My professor Ajak told me it one day during an anthropology class I took my freshman year of college"
She loves that story.
“I love that story. It kinda reminds me of us. You on the cross country team. Me on the chess team. An intellectual and a speedster”
Awwww, when you asked me to prom by arranging the chess pieces to spell prom.
“Oh god, that was embarrassing”
The two laughed together, reminiscing about old memories, until Makkari grew silent.
“Something on your mind, love?”
Yes, I’ve been thinking about this for a while…
“What? I know you want another baby, I want one too! But we barely have room for Skylar now and-”
No Druig, it’s not that. Well, kinda like that. I want to move.
“Move?”
Move. To a bigger place. A place in the country side. Where Skylar can play outside in our backyard and have big a room. Where we would have enough room to have another child. Where I can wait outside for the big yellow bus to come and pick up and drop off Skylar for school.
“Wow, Makkari. I didn’t know you thought about it this much”
It’s embarrassing isn’t it? Forget I said anything. I mean a white picket fence? We’re barely covering rent as it is. Skylar has to start school next year. Moving is so cra-
Druig grabbed her face and kissed her passionately.
“It’s not embarrassing. It’s amazing” he whispered slow enough so she can read his lips. “I want all of that too. The backyard. The bus. Everything.”
You do? Makkari signed hopefully.
“I do. White picket fence and all”
Makkari laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck and looked up at him. But not just any look. That seductive look where she lowers her chin and raises her eyebrow. Druig was familiar with this look. Very familiar.
“Right now?”
She nodded at him and his heart skipped a beat. He smirked and picked her up, wrapping her legs around his waist and kissing her hungrily. She pulled away suddenly looked at him seriously.
We can’t be too loud. I don’t want to wake up Skylar.
“Don’t worry” Druig said between kisses. “I can be very quiet”
The next month they were looking at houses. Every Tuesday when Druig came home from work, they would go out with Skylar looking at potential future homes. Each time, finding something wrong with it.
Too big.
Too small.
Too expensive.
Too far away from schools Makkari had selected for Skylar.
At the end of the third month of looking Makkari disappointedly dropped her bag on the couch. Druig noticed her sadness and knew she was upset.
“Skylar, why don’t you go play in your room?”
“Okay daddy” Skylar said happily and skipped away to your room. When he knew she was out of earshot.
“Makkari, I know your upset-”
Upset? No, no, no, I’m not upset. Makkari said not meeting Druig’s eyes.
“Makkari, come on-”
No Druig. How could I be upset? We’ve spent three months looking for our future home. Where our family is going to grow up! I thought we would have found one by now! Ikaris and Sersi are already on baby number three and found their house right after their honeymoon!
“My cousin has a rich father and has never worked a day in his life. I mean, how rich do you have to be to be named Ikaris?”
Makkari laughed a little bit, finally meeting Druig’s eyes.
“There’s that smile I fell in love with” he whispered leaning his forehead against hers. “We’ll find a house soon. I can feel it”
How do you know? Makkari signed.
“I just do”
How are you so optimistic?
“I’m more confident than optimistic. Don’t loose hope yet Makkari. We can do this.” He says stroking her cheek.
So they spent the next couple week looking at houses, each one Makkari getting more and more disappointed.
Makkari sat in the car seat next to Druig staring at the same old driveway, just a different house. Before Druig exited the car, she placed her hand on his.
This is the last one. I can’t do it anymore. She signed slowly.
Druig nodded his head solemnly and opened the door for Skylar to jump out. Makkari exited the car as well and looked at this house. Instead of feeling disappointment or boredom, she felt something different. A little spark in her stomach. Something about the architecture of the exterior sat differently with her. A good different.
She walked next to Druig as he translated what the real estate was saying, but she wasn’t really paying attention.
Makkari found herself wandering away from her husband and around the house instead. She stroked the furniture, walls, and even spun around in a circle in different rooms.
Druig noticed his wife’s change of emotion and couldn’t help get his hopes up. This was the happiest he has seen her in a while.
“Is your wife feeling okay?” The real estate agent asked.
“Oh yes, she just…had a lot to eat for breakfast. Could you give us a moment?”
“Of course, take your time” the agent responded, leaving the room to make a call outside.
“Makkari? Are you okay?”
I’m better than okay. This is the one Druig.
“What? Are you sure?” He asks taking her hands in his.
She nods and signs Yes, I’m sure.
“How do you know?”
The moment I stepped in this house I knew it was the one. Also look at Skylar. Makkari gestures to Skylar who was playing with a hammock that came with the house.
“So we’re doing this?”
Well, how do you feel about this house? She asks him.
“I love it. I can build Skylar a treehouse back there. I already started drawing up the plans in my head”
Makkari laughed as she caressed Druig’s face. She stood on her tip toes and kissed him gently in the empty living room.
This is it. Our home.
“Yes, my beautiful, beautiful, Makkari. Welcome home” he said smiling.
What are we waiting for? Call that agent back in here!
Druig smiled as he turned to call his agent. “Hey Kingo! We have some news”
Kingo rushes back in with a clipboard and pen. “Good news I hope?”
“Yes, good news. We’ll take it.” Druig said proudly putting comforting arm around Makkari.
“Fantastic, I have the papers right here. I knew you guys would love it! It has everything you asked for. Lovely neighborhood, close to civilization, and right in your price range”
“Thank you for sticking with us Kingo”
“It’s my job Mr. Druig. Glad I could help your family find your home”
Druig pulled Makkari closer as they sat down at a nearby table and started to do the paperwork.
2 weeks later:
“All right, please bring everything inside” Druig instructed the moving company to carry their boxes inside. There wasn’t much since they came from a small apartment, so within no time, everything was inside.
Makkari took a moment and stared up at the entrance of their new house. Druig saw her in awe and grabbed her hand and kissed it tenderly.
“Are you ready to go into our house?” Druig asked.
She nodded and was swept off her feet, carried by Druig bridal style.
Through her laughter she signed to him Druig! What are you doing?
“This is what I did when we moved into our first apartment together. Time to do it again!” He said kicking the door open with his foot.
Makkari laughed as she watched Skylar skip happily behind them.
“All right gang. This is our new house. What do we think?” Druig asked placing Makkari down.
“I love it! I can’t believe how big my new room is!” Skylar said running around.
Makkari laughed as she chased after her daughter, scooping her into her arms and hugging her. Druig joined in hugging the two most important girls in his life in his arms. To him, his whole world was in his embrace.
The family spent the rest of the day unpacking small things, such as clothes, utensils, and plates. Dinner consisted of take out from a local Chinese place, which Druig deemed their new go to take out spot.
Night fell and as usual, Druig and Makkari tucked Skylar in after telling her a story. After she was asleep, the two left, going into the living room.
“Look what I smuggled in” Druig said smugly picking up a bottle of champagne.
When did you have time to get that? Makkari inquired.
“I won’t give up my secrets” Druig responded grabbing two champagne glasses from a nearby box.
Makkari placed her hand over his stopping him, shaking her head.
“What’s wrong? You don’t want any?” Druig asked confused.
She nodded.
“Why? I promise it’s a good bottle. Thena recommended it to me. You know your sister has good taste”
It’s not that, I just can’t have any for a little while.
“What do you mean?”
I thought you were the smart one?
“I am! Top marks on the SAT. Licensed psychologist. You my dearest Makkari, have married a certified genius”
Makkari rolled her eyes at her husband and gave up at him realizing it on his own. She placed a hand on her stomach and looked up at him.
His expression went from humor to shock. That familiar look she saw on him five years ago when she told him she was pregnant the first time.
“You’re-you’re pregnant?”
Surprise! She said with jazz hands.
Druig gently placed a hand on hers over her stomach. “How long have you known?”
“A month or so”
“Makkari, you should have told me”
I didn’t want to stress you out with us moving and getting Skylar comfortable. The last time I was pregnant, you wouldn’t even let me get a book from a bookshelf.
“I was worried! I read somewhere that-”
You worry too much Druig.
“I know, I know” he says happily, tears coming from his eyes.
He looked at Makkari and picked her up and spun her around laughing.
“WOOOO HOOOO!” He yelled loudly.
Shhhhh! You’re gonna wake up Skylar! Makkari scolded, but it was too late. She felt the tiny vibrations of footsteps coming down the hallway.
“Mommy? Why is daddy screaming?”
Makkari raised an eye in Druig’s direction, who walked over to his daughter and picked her up.
“Skylar…” he started sitting down on the couch with her on his lap. “How would you feel about being an older sister?”
“An older sister?”
“Yeah, how would you like that?”
“I would love that! I would finally have someone to play with at home!”
“Yeah you wou-hey! I play with you!” Druig said offended.
“Yeah you do. Why are you asking me this daddy?” Skylar asked.
“Because…mommy is pregnant” Druig answered.
“Pregnant?” Skylar said confused.
Yes sweetie. I’m pregnant. I have your future little brother or sister growing inside me.
“You can do that? Is that where I cam from?” Skylar asked with her eyes as large as saucers.
Umm, yes it is. The point is, Skylar, you’re gonna be a big sister! Makkari signed happily.
“Yay! I’m so excited!” Skylar said happily, dancing around the room.
Great, now she’s never gonna get to sleep. Makkari said sighing, already sensing the long night ahead of them.
“Don’t worry, love. I’ll put her to sleep” Druig said lifting her up.
Makkari and Druig walked over to Skylar’s room again and tucked her in.
“Hey mommy?”
Yes Skylar?
“I have a question”
What is it honey?
“When the baby comes, can you make it a girl? I want a sister”
At that Druig burst out laughing, Makkari chuckled and kissed her daughters forehead.
I’ll see what I can do Makkari signed, before turning off the light once more.
Druig and Makkari walked over to their new master bedroom and laid down in their bed.
Druig had his arms wrapped protectively around Makkari. One hand pulling her in, the other resting on her abdomen.
“I can’t believe our little family is growing” Druig exclaimed.
Yes it is. I love you Druig.
“I love you too Makkari”
