Mahd Wy’ry Au

Makkari watched as Thena killed the last of the deviant.

Guess there was more than Phastos thought Makkari signed to her friend.

“Yes there was, not that I’m complaining” Thena said straightening herself out.

You go back to the others, I’m gonna do one last sweep around the city.

Thena raises an eyebrow at her. “Ajak tell us not to interfere”

What’s a few lives saved gonna harm anything?

Thena nodded and made her way to the forest. Makkari turned and started running towards the city on fire. When she got there, her heart dropped at all the death and destruction humans were causing. Even at her fastest speed, she couldn’t save all of them. She looked around quickly, scanning the area for any innocents in danger. That’s when she saw two men pulling down a large aztec pillar, it was just about to crush a little girl.

Makkari ran at her top speed and carried the girl out of danger. She couldn’t stay for any longer or else Ajak would know what she was up to. Once she knew the girl was okay, she ran away to the woods, catching up with Thena. She walked next to her until they met up with the rest of the Eternals.

Sprite, Phastos, Sersi, Ajak, and Druig.

Druig. Easily the smartest and cutest intellectual on the team. Everything about him screamed mystery. Maybe that’s why she was so attracted to him. They had been on the same team together for a couple centuries, aimlessly flirting around one another, but never acting upon it.

With Ikaris and Sersi taking up most of the romantic spotlight, the two opted to keep their feelings for each other a secret. It was no secret that out of all the Eternals, Druig and Makkari had a special connection.

“Where are the others?” Ajak inquired.

We had to spit up. Makkari signs pulling her hands apart from each other

“There were more deviants than you said” Thena spoke up.

“Well, I’m sure that was a lot of fun for you” Phastos responded.

“It was” Thena replied with a smirk.

Phastos opens the palms of his hands and a small golden Earth emerges from them with a small blue circle surrounding what looked like modern day Mexico.

“Once the others kill these last Deviants, we will have eliminated them all from the planet” Phastos calculated.

I can go look for them. Makkari volunteered, she turned to leave when something stopped her.

The sounds of gunshots and shouting filled the air. Druig turned his head to see chaos and agony amongst the humans. Pain and suffering filled his head as the humans he spent so long trying to protect, turned on each other.

Makkari looked over at the crowd, feeling each vibration as a gun was fired, hitting another man, woman, or child.

Druig stepped forward, eyes glowing gold. Before he could do anything, Ajak stopped him.

“Don’t. We don’t interfere in their wars.” Ajak calmly spoke.

Makkari tried to stay focused on the task of hand, but something was clawing away in her mind. As if a little spark was going off in her brain, getting bigger and bigger.

“This isn’t war. It’s genocide. Their weapons have become too deadly. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea helping them advance Phastos” Druig retorted.

“Technology is a part of their evolutionary process, Druig. It’s not exactly something I can stop”

Makkari stepped forward towards Druig, ignoring this voice in her brain telling her a fight or flight notion.

“No, you can’t. But I can” Druig said strongly.

Stay strong. Makkari signed keeping a steady eye contact with Druig. Druig looked into her eyes and calmed down. She would always calm him down. As far as he knew, Makkari was his rock.

She turned to go back and look for the other Eternals, when she stopped dead in her tracks. Makkari had tried to ignore this feelings growing inside her, but it was too strong. Too strong to be kept at bay.

It’s too late she signed slowly.

“Makkari?” Sersi asked concerned.

Everyone is going to die. Makkari’s eyes then began to glow gold. She grabbed Druig’s shoulder for support as he steadied her.

“Are you okay?” Sersi asked.

Makkari did not answer, instead choosing to power up her suit armor.

Makkari took her stance and ran towards Sersi at full speed, Thena’s battle instincts came into play as she generated her cosmic shield and jumped in front of Sersi.

The two women were blasted back by Makkari’s force, her eyes still glowing gold.

“Makkari? Makkari no!” Phastos yelled. Makkari’s neck whipped in his direction as she ran towards him. She struck him with an immense amount of force that he was flung into a tree and fell to the ground.

Ajak and Druig ran to his side, checking his body for any major bruises and injuries.

Makkari ran back into the city and in a blink of an eye, returned with a human spear. She looked over at Druig and Ajak with no emotion in her face.

“Makkari stop!” Druig yelled at her, but nothing was getting through to her.

Makkari lifted up the spear and was about to impale Ajak and Druig at full speed when Thena generated a cosmic whip and lassoed Makkari’s arm and pulled her back.

Makkari landed on the ground near her and momentarily seemed out of sorts.

“What’s wrong with her?” Druig asked worried.

Before Ajak could respond, Makkari phased out of Thena’s whip and stood up slowly. She picked up the human spear and got into battle stance once more.

Makkari might not have been their fiercest fighter, but she was the fastest no question. She could easily kill any one of the Eternals all because they would not see her coming.

Makkari charged at Thena with the spear. Thena naturally disarmed Makkari within the first couple sparring moments, but kept up her cosmic shield to defend herself. Usually, Thena was all for the offensive attacks, but since she was dueling Makkari, she stuck with defensive measures.

Makkari then ran back and forth towards Thena at full speeds that not even the goddess of war was strong enough to fight. Thena was knocked back against a rock and lost consciousness for a moment.

Makkari stepped forward, grabbing the spear she had on the ground and slowly approached Thena, spear raised. She was about to kill her when Ajak stood in front of her and stopped the attack.

The spear went through Ajak’s hands, all though based on Ajak’s steady facial expression, she did not feel it.

Ajak quickly healed her hands and did a circular movement, creating magical symbols along her hands.

For a moment, Makkari did not hear the voices inside her head telling her to attack. There was silence, just like it used to be.

She blinked a couple times, trying to regain consciousness over her own mind. She dropped the spear and powered down her armor.

Druig watched from the sidelines, still helping Phastos and Sersi get up, but it broke his heart to see his Makkari looking confused and above all, scared.

Ajak slowly stepped closer and closer to Makkari. “Don’t listen to your head, Makkari. Listen to the vibrations of my voice. You are safe. You are loved. You’re our Makkari.”

Makkari could almost sense being fully in control of her body when the vibrations of gun shots and explosions flooded her ears once more. The feeling of being in control seemed like a distant thought as gold rushed into her pupils as she powered up her suit again and slammed Ajak into the rock wall.

At this point, Gilgamesh, Ikaris, and Kingo arrived back and saw the state of their team. Kingo ran over to help Thena, while Ikaris worried over Sersi.

Gilgamesh ran over to try and catch Makkari.

“Hey! Stop, stop, stop!” Gilgamesh wrapped his strong arms around the tiny speedster. But it was no use. Speed would outmatch strength every time.

Makkari got out of Gilgamesh’s grasp and pushed him away. Her eyes glowed gold and anger as she pushed each of her teammates down.

“We have to do something, or else she’s gonna kill us all” Sprite yelled.

Thena nodded as she generated her cosmic spear.

“Wait! We can’t hurt her, she’s still Makkari!” Druig said standing up.

“Druig, if we don’t do something, she’s gonna kill each of us before we have a chance to process what happened” Thena said, steadily holding her weapon.

“Try and catch her first, before you try and hurt her” Druig begged.

Thena nodded and looked over at their second fastest Eternal, Ikaris.

“There’s no way I can catch her. We tested this theory before” Ikaris said, reminiscing about the time their family spent the afternoon placing bets and doing races on who was the fastest Eternal.

“Please Ikaris. Try.” Druig looked over at Ikaris, practically begging on his knees to him. Ikaris sighed, knowing that Druig would rather do anything than ask him for help.

“I’ll see what I can do” Ikaris said flying up.

Phastos got up too, generating cosmic nets to help slow her down if she were to land on them. “These are still prototypes though” Phastos warns.

Makkari whips her body around when she see’s Ikaris fly up above her. “Makkari!” He bellows down to her. “Calm down. Now.”

Makkari see’s what he is trying to do as she feels Phastos’s movements around her, setting down objects. She knows that they are trying to catch her so she runs away.

Ikaris instantly flies after her, a bit behind her, but still close enough to see. He catches up to her and shoots laser beams in front of her to stop her direction.

Makkari stops suddenly and runs back in the other direction of the other Eternals. She stops before them, looking around at each of them slowly.

“Makkari, please. Come back to us” Druig says gently, trying to take her hand. Makkari’s gaze softens at him as she looks into Druig’s blue eyes, but then feels the painful heat of Ikaris’s eye beams hit her back.

Her eyes return to emotionless as she runs into Druig at full speed, causing a large gash on his side.

“Arghhh” he screams in pain grabbing his side. “Ikaris? What have you done?!” Druig yells as Ajak comes to his side and heals him.

“I thought if I got a good enough hit on her, she’d knock out” Ikaris said. “I can’t catch her, I can get close, but only for a split second. She’s too fast” Ikaris breathed out.

“Druig, you know what you have to do” Ajak says, healing his wound.

“I can’t do that to her Ajak. We made a promise to each other-”

“Now’s not the time for promises Druig!” Sprite interrupts, but Ajak turns to face the youngest Eternal and shake her head.

“We don’t have any other options if you want us not to hurt her. This will be the least painful.” Ajak reassures.

Druig stands up, still holding on to his side even though no wound is there. He watches as a steam of gold is darting around the forest, trying to figure out a way to escape.

“Why is she going around in circles?” Druig asks.

“Because she is fighting with her mind. It is still Makkari in there. It is why Ikaris was able to catch up to her so quickly. She is fighting to regain control.” Ajak explained.

Druig let out a breath before whispering “I’m sorry Makkari”. He closed his eyes and opened them again. Eyes glowing gold, but not gold like Makkari’s. The golden streak starts to slow down as it makes it’s way towards them. Makkari staggers forward towards them, each step being slower than the last.

Makkari’s eyes roll to the back of her head as she falls to the ground into a deep sleep. Druig comes out of his trance and rushes to her side. He falls to his knees next to her and brushes a hair out of her face. He hates using his powers on people who don’t want it, but even more when it’s on his teammates, especially her.

Druig picks her up bridal style and turns to face his teammates. “What do we do?” He asks worriedly.

The team takes her to a temple in Tenochtitlan and lay her down on the alter as she sleeps peacefully.

“I thought Mahd Wy’ry was a myth” Sersi said, looking over her sleeping sisters body as Ikaris paces around the room.

“There is no cure. So no one really talks about it” Phastos says as he is being healed by Ajak.

Druig stiffens up at the mention of no cure as he rubs mini circles with his thumb on Makkari’s hand. He hasn’t let go since he put her to sleep.

Makkari wakes up with a gasp, eyes momentarily turning gold before back to her normal brown.

Everyone both step away, but at the same time look over Makkari’s body. She sits up slowly and signs to everyone.

What happened?

“Makkari. You attacked everyone. You wounded Sersi, Phastos, you nearly killed Thena and Druig” Ajak spoke calmly.

Makkari lost her breath as she slowly signed, tears forming in her eyes.

I-I did what? She signed, looking over at her teammates and Druig. They all avoided eye contact with her except for him

“It’s okay Makkari-”

How bad was I?

Druig looked at Makkari and saw how broken she was. “You were too fast. We couldn’t catch you. I had to put you to sleep”

Is everyone okay? How bad did I hurt you guys?

'It’s not bad, Ajak healed all of us”

How bad did I hurt you Druig?

Druig held his breath as he turned to Ajak.

“You cut him deep Makkari. There was a large gash on his side.” Ajak responded.

Makkari hurried her face in his hands and brought her knees in. She hated being the cause of such pain, especially to her family.

I’m so sorry Druig

“Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay Makkari. It wasn’t your fault” Druig tried to reassure her, gently taking her hands and cupping her face. Ignoring the looks from the other Eternals.

What do you mean? Of course it’s my fault. I hurt you guys. Makkari said looking up into Druig’s eyes.

“No Makkari. I promise, it was okay. Right guys? Tell her it was okay!” Druig pleaded, trying to comfort her.

The others just looked him and shook their heads. “Druig…I know what you’re trying to do, but it wasn’t okay” Thena spoke.

Makkari looked over at Druig and put her hand on his shoulder. Druig, I hurt you. It’s all my fault. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

“You have Mahd Wy’ry. Your mind is fracturing under the weight of your memories. And all I can do is erase them so you can start over. I will have to inform Arishem and take you back to the ship where we have the technology to help you.” Ajak explains.

Makkari’s eyes widened as she insticticvly grabbed Druig’s hand for support. Druig returned the favor, one hand holding hers, the other resting on her back, rubbing conforming circles on it.

“But, she won’t be Makkari anymore” Sersi says worried.

“What if it happens again? She could have killed you. She could have killed all of us.” Ikaris says. “We can’t beat her if she does turn again”

“You’re spirit will remain. You will always be Makkari deep inside” Ajak says comfortingly.

“Why should she trust you? You’re asking her to let you erase who she is” Druig argues, stepping forward, still holding Makkari’s hand.

“Druig, I know you’re upset, but-”

“Upset!? You’re about to erase who Makkari is. Erase everything she has lived though. Everything that she knows”

“We don’t have another option Druig” Ajak said.

“How can you even ask her that? What kind of leader are you? Giving up on your team with a snap of a finger-”

Makkari tugged on Druig’s hand and he calmed down and looked back at her.

Druig…it’s okay.

“It’s not okay Makkari! It’s not okay…” Druig shouted then calmed down.

It’s okay…I want this. Makkari signed unconvincingly. Her words said one thing, but her eyes said another.

“No you don’t Makkari. I know you. You don’t want this”

I do if it means I won’t hurt you or anyone else Makkari signs to him.

Druig’s heart breaks into a thousand pieces.

“How can you be so okay with this?” Druig whispers pressing his forehead against hers.

Because Druig…I’m doing this for you. I can’t be the reason one day you get hurt or worse. Makkari signs to him.

“Don’t give up Makkari. It will be okay, you’re gonna be okay” Druig says reassuringly.

Druig, I appreciate what your trying to do, but I’ve made up my mind. Please don’t try to scare me out of it.

“N-no, you can’t do this Kari, please, I’ll find cure, I won’t rest until I find a cure” Druig says quickly.

“Druig…there is no cure” Phastos reminds him gently

“No Phastos! Everything has a cure! The only reason Mahd Wy’ry doesn’t have a cure is because no one talks about it. I can find one, I know I can!” Druig yells glaring at Phastos.

Makkari grabs his face and forces him to look at her, she looks at all the built up emotion and rage he has in face.

Druig…calm down. It will be okay. Makkari signs to him.

“No Makkari. What about your memories?” Druig cries, tears coming out of his eyes.

We’ll make new memories. I know what Ajak says, but deep down, I know I will never forget you Druig Makkari signs to him.

Druig solemnly nods to her as Makkari turns to Ajak and nods.

Ajak turns to Sprite “Sprite, can you teleport Makkari and myself to the Domo-”

“Wait! If I can’t convince you not to make this mistake Ajak, I’ll go up with you. I want to be by her side when she wakes up” Druig says firmly holding Makkari’s hand.

Ajak is about to argue when she looks at the way Makkari and Druig are looking at each other.

“All right” Ajak says, nodding at Sprite. Sprite waves her hands, and Ajak, Makkari, and Druig were all standing in the Domo.

“All right Makkari, lay down here, and it will be just like falling asleep” Ajak instructs.

Makkari nods before looking over at Druig. She cups his face and leans her forehead against his. Druig puts his hands on top of hers, before bringing them down on to her waist and pulls her close, tears already forming in his eyes.

Don’t cry my strong Druig…

“I’m sorry Makkari. I’m sorry I broke my promises.”

What promises?

“My promise never to use my powers on you. My promise to protect you. To protect you from harm”.

But you didn’t! I’m doing this out of my choice for you…

“But Makkari-”

Druig, I love you.

Druig’s eyes widened as he was at a loss for words for once in his life.

I love you. I’m sorry I’m telling you this now. But I love you.

“I-I love you too” Druig stumbled along his words.

You don’t have to say it back just because-

Druig interrupted her leaning in to kiss her passionately. The kiss took Makkari by surprise, but she melted into it, wrapping her arms around his neck. Druig lifted Makkari up slightly, holding her tightly. The two lips parted when they needed air.

“No Makkari. I love you too. I always have”

Makkari looked down at him, smiling the biggest smile he has seen in a while.

“It is time” Ajak interrupted sadly.

Druig reluctantly put Makkari down gently as she stroked his cheek slowly. She went up on her tip toes one last time, giving Druig a soft peck on his lips before signing one last thing to him.

Don’t give up on us Druig. Okay?

“Never my love…never” Druig said holding her hand as she laid down on the ground.

Ajak started the spell that would take Makkari away from him. Druig watched intently, trying to figure out the first thing he will sign to her when she wakes up.

That’s when it struck him.

“Ajak wait stop!” Druig said suddenly.

“Druig if you can’t handle it I suggest you leave the room” Ajak says softly, continuing the spell.

Druig panicked as he watched Makkari’s eyes slowly close. He was running out of time. So he did the only thing he could think of.

He stood up quickly and tackled Ajak to the ground mid spell. He knew he was gonna regret that later.

“Druig enough!” Ajak yelled angry for the first time.

“I’ll take care of her” Druig said quickly, helping Ajak up.

“What?”

“I’ll take care of her. We’ll move away. Away from the humans. I’ll care for her.”

Ajak’s eyebrow was raised as he said this to her.

“She’ll always be at risk for relapsing again. Are you sure you are willing to accept complete responsibility of her?”

“I do”

“What if she attacks you again?” Ajak warned.

Druig looked over at a sleeping Makkari. “I’m willing to take that chance”

Ajak nodded and put her hand on Druig’s shoulder.

“I’m proud of you Druig” she said.

Druig smiled at Ajak and looked over at Makkari and walked over to her side.

“You didn’t finish the spell did you? Does she already not know who she is?” Druig asked worriedly.

“No, right now she is sleeping” Ajak reassured.

Druig calmed down and stroked Makkari’s cheek, just as she did for him.

Her body stirred as she opened her eyes.

Druig? Druig! She signed tired then excitedly.

What happened? I still remember you. I remember everything.

“I stopped Ajak, I have a different solution” Druig signed and spoke to her.

What is it? Makkari signed to him.

“I’ll take care of you. We’ll run away together. Away from everything. We’ll build a new life together. And if you ever get Mahd Wy’ry again, I’ll just put you to sleep. I’m the only who can catch you”

But…but what if I hurt you again?

“I don’t care. I can’t live with myself knowing you lost your true self”

Druig, I really appreciate it but-

“No Makkari. I know I can do this. I can’t loose you. Please, say yes” Druig begged bringing his head down to her.

Makkari thought about it for a moment. Of course she wants to remember who she is and live with Druig, but what happens if she snaps again? What if she hurts him even worse, with no Ajak to heal him. Is she willing to take that chance? She looks over at Druig who is breathing heavily by her side. He seems ready to make that change for her.

But what about you? You always wanted to travel the world, studying humans. You’d be giving up your dream.

Druig chuckled as he held her hand and brought it up to their eye level. He kissed it slowly and brought it to his heart.

This is my new dream. A life with you.

Makkari smiled as she nodded her head. Okay, let’s do it she signs.

Druig can’t contain his happiness as he scoops her up into his arms and spins around. The Domo’s empty hallways are filled with the two young eternals laughter.

“So where do you wanna go Makkari? We’ll go anywhere you want” he says happily.

Makkari looks up, thinking about it.

The amazon? It’s in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nature.

“Sounds perfect” Druig says leaning in, kissing her tenderly.

Thank you Druig.

“For what?”

For everything. Taking care of me. Standing up for me. Protecting me and my memories”

“My beautiful, beautiful, Makkari. You don’t have to thank me. I made a promise, I will always protect you, til the day I die”

Druig said, leaning his forehead against hers, with Makkari still in his arms.
