Chapter 2
Having just sat in his office, Matt was utterly bored out of his mind. They had no clients, it was horrible. Nothing to do.
Foggy had started bribing Brett with cigarettes again and as much as Matt disagreed he really hoped Brett would just call and tell them there was a possible case.
He leaned back into his chair and heard it squeak. He agreed with whatever the chair was saying.
“Did you know he actually cheated! He’s such a fucking asshole! Like who does he think he is?” A woman ranted on the third floor.
“What did you do next?” The other woman asked, she was intrigued.
“Oh, I fucking slapped him! He got so mad but he had some stupid morals about not hitting women,” The woman said.
“Honey, did you get the eggs?”
“Wanna go to the movies?”
“God fucking dammit! I lost again!”
“Come on! Shoot! Shoot! Come on! No!”
“I think I like him”
“She’s so creepy,”
The loud ring of a phone cut into Matt’s listening. Matt almost fell off of his chair but scrambled to keep his balance.
“Hello! Nelson, Murdock & Page, attorneys at law,” Foggy greeted on the phone.
“Get to the station Nelson, another suspected homicide case, you like those don’t you?” Brett said on the other line. Matt stood up and grabbed his briefcase.
“Okay, okay we’ll be there,” Foggy said and hung up the phone. Foggy walked out to the middle room and Matt was already in his doorway with his briefcase. Foggy just sighed and chuckled.
“I’m guessing you heard?” Foggy said.
“There’s no guessing needed,” Matt simply said with a smile.
“Huh? A case?” Karen asked standing up from her desk.
“Yeah, homicide. God this brings back memories,” Foggy said with a grin as he put his jacket on.
The two arrived at the station and Brett led them to an interrogation room.
“He says his name is Eddie Brock but there’s no one named Eddie Brock that looks like him, he was found at the scene close to the two bodies, one missing its fucking head,” Brett explained before they stopped and he opened the door.
“I want a lawyer,” a man said from inside.
“Good because you just scored the two most annoying lawyers,” Brett said as Foggy grabbed Matt to pull him inside the interrogation room. The man inside, that wasn’t a police officer, was a bit taller than Matt. He had a decent amount of muscle and had a healthy body in general. Except there was something off. It didn’t seem bad but it was different and Matt couldn’t really put his finger on it.
The man turned to face them and seemed to calm down after being a bit mad about a second ago. The officers nodded to Foggy and he nodded back as they left the room.
“Hello, Mr Brock, I’m Matt Murdock and this is my partner Foggy Nelson,” Matt introduced.
“May we sit down?” Foggy asked.
“Sure,” Mr Brock answered. He had a fairly deep voice, not too deep but still deep. Matt waved a hand for the chair before finding it and pulling it out. He placed his folded up cane in his lap while Foggy pulled out a notebook and a pen.
“Do you mind telling us what happened?” Foggy asked and clicked on his pen to be ready to write. Mr Brock shifted in his seat resting his back more towards the seat making the handcuffs rattle slightly against the metal table.
“I was taking out the trash,” Mr Brock simply answered. His heartbeat was steady, it was the truth. Matt nodded to let him continue.
‘Eddie, can we leave?’ Venom whined again in Eddie’s head. Eddie bit his cheek in slight annoyance. He didn’t want to be here. He wanted to go back to his universe. He missed Anne, his apartment, Mrs Chen, and maybe even Dan. But he had no idea how to go back so he had to rebuild a life here, but now he had to sit in an interrogation room.
“Well wrong place wrong time I guess,” Mr Brock said with a sigh. It wasn’t a lie, so he didn’t mean to be there, but they still didn’t know if he killed the man.
“Did you murder the people in the alleyway?” Matt asked placing his hands together and leaning onto the table.
“No,” Eddie answered. Venom killed them, it was Venom’s choice, he shouldn’t be held accountable.
“Okey,” Matt said and nodded to himself.
(Another disclaimer that I am not 100% about the law, especially in America so this isn’t a proper representation of anything).
“So I’m not going to jail?” Eddie asked pointing a finger at himself as he stood with the two lawyers in the hallway of the police station.
“No, they didn’t have enough evidence to charge you, though you might still be under investigation as the only suspect. Also about the whole name situation, you will be seen as Eddie Brock, they can’t find you anywhere,” Matt explained.
“Good, it’s my name,” Eddie said.
“So you say,” Foggy chimed from the background.
“So about the money situation?” Eddie asked.
“Well… if you don’t have the money to pay us,” Matt started and turned towards Foggy.
“I'm giving you a look Matt,” Foggy said as he was glaring at Matt sceptically.
“We could let him work at the office until the debt is repaid, you did the same for me?” Karen suggested.
“Works for me if it’s alright with you guys? Thank you for taking this case, by the way, I totally couldn't afford any other lawyer,” Eddie commented.
‘Because you’re poor Eddie! This is horrible! We are going to have to live on the street!’ Venom complained.
“Hm, that could work,” Foggy agreed.
“Sure,” Matt simply said.
“Alright, you can come in on Monday at 9 pm,” Karen said and patted Eddie on the shoulder.
“Thank you guys, really, thank you,” Eddie thanked.
“It’s fine Mr Brock,” Matt said and smiled.
Eddie walked home. He was exhausted. He had spent five hours at the station and now he had another job. How could it become any worse?
He walked with his hands in his pockets and listened to random people around him. Most things were just murmurs.
‘Eddie, I’m hungry,’ Venom complained. Eddie sighed and continued on walking in silence.
‘Eddie stop ignoring me! You have been ignoring me the whole day! It's not fair!” Venom roared in his head.
“We can stop at some shop and buy a cheap sandwich and a chocolate bar, is that enough?” Eddie asked. Venom did a long humming sound.
‘Sure!’ he then said happily and started humming to some song he probably heard on some random radio. They walked into the store and walked into an aisle where there were cheap sandwiches. He grabbed one and walked towards where the chocolate bars were.
“Which one?” He asked Venom before a man rushed into the store with a black mask on. He pulled out a gun and pointed it at the cashier. Two other masked men followed behind the first one.
“Nobody tries anything funny! Give us the money and you can keep your life!” The first man yelled as the other two men started walking into the store grabbing random stuff.
‘Eddie! We can be lethal protectors! This city obviously needs it! We can do what we were supposed to do!’ Venom roared. The man behind the cash register starters slowly opening the register as if stalling.
“I know what you’re doing! Hurry up!” The man yelled and smacked the back of his gun to the registering desk. The man jumped slightly before hurrying.
‘Come on Eddie!’ Venom wined.
“Fine,” he mumbled before letting Venom cover his body. The three masked men stared at him.
“Is it one of those freaks?!” One of the men yelled.
“Freak!? Who are you calling freak?!” Venom roared taking steps towards the man. He grabbed the man by the shoulders as the other two ran off. He opened his large mouth ready to eat the man’s head but got some sort of stick thrown at him.
“Huh?” Venom asked closing his mouth but keeping the now screaming man in his grasp.
“Let him go,” an authoritative, pretty deep voice instructed from… where was he?
“I’m gonna eat him! He’s a bad guy!” Venom yelled in protest.
“No, let him go,” The voice instructed again. Venom snarled and opened his mouth again.
Now another stick came flying and hit him in the eye.
“Fuck!” Venom swore and let the man go.
“Leave,” the voice said.
“Who are you?! Where are you?!” Venom roared. A man in a black shirt, black cargo pants, and a black mask over his eyes stepped into his view.
“Leave it to the police,” the man instructed again.
‘Venom leave the man alone,’ Eddie said inside Venom’s head.
“Whatever! But not because of you masked man!” Venom said and started to stomp out of the store but only after grabbing the sandwich and chocolate bar.
They got to an alleyway before Venom finally went back inside.
‘Who does he think he is?!’ Venom complained.
“I dunno, maybe he’s like a superhero, you saw the mask,” Eddie commented tiredly. All he wanted to do was to eat and then sleep.
He opened his sandwich and grabbed it and started eating on the way home. Venom continued ranting about the man in the mask before getting bored and switching subject to something that seemed to interest him now.
When Eddie got back to his apartment he gave one look to the bed before taking off his jacket and getting in bed with his clothes on.
“Goodnight Eddie” Venom said.
“Goodnight.”
