Airport Fight Part 1

Pulling into the parking garage, Steve thought about the last twenty-four hours. He knew that the team would be after him, which was why he had Sharon gather the shield and Sam’s wings, but he wasn’t sure who that team would entail. He hoped Kara wouldn’t come but he knew she would.

None of this was going to be easy and now they had to accept whatever consequences came their way.

Pulling in next to a white van, the three men got out and Clint approached them. “Cap.”

Shaking his hand, Steve sighed. “You know I wouldn’t have called if I had any other choice.”

“Hey, man, you’re doing me a favor.” Clint told him and glanced at Pietro. “Besides, I owe a debt.”

“Thanks for having my back.” The super soldier said to the twins and Pietro nodded.

“It was time to get off our asses.”

Nodding at them, Steve looked back to Clint. “How about our other recruit?”

“He’s raring to go.” Walking over to the van, he flung the door open to reveal a man who jumped a mile at the sound. “Had to put a little coffee in him, but…he should be good.”

Crawling out of the van, the man squinted at the bright sky. “What time zone is this?” Then he saw Steve and his expression changed. “Captain America.”

Steve shook his hand. “Mr. Lang.”

“It’s an honor.” They were still shaking hands. “I’m shaking your hand too long. Wow, this is awesome! Captain America.” Then he faced Wanda and Pietro. “I know you, too. You’re great!”

Looking back at Steve, he clapped him on the shoulders. “Look, I want to say, I know you know a lot of super people, so…thinks for thanking of me.” Not even noticing the word flub, he looked at Sam next. “Hey, man.”

“What’s up, tic-tac?”

“Uh…good to see you. Look, what happened last time when I…”

Sam chuckled. “It’s a great audition, but it’ll never happen again.”

“They tell you what we’re up against?” Steve asked Scott, interrupting his conversation.

The other man nodded. “Something about some psycho-assassins?”

“We’re outside the law on this one.” Steve told him. “So, if you come with us, you’re a wanted man.”

“Yeah, well, what else is new?” Scott asked rhetorically.

“We should get moving.” Bucky spoke up from behind them.

Clint sighed. “We got a chopper lined up.”

At the same time he spoke a voice came over the loudspeaker and Bucky sighed. “They’re evacuating the airport.”

Looking at Steve, Sam looked concerned. “Stark.”

“Stark?” Scott asked. “Which one?”

Clenching his jaw, Steve looked at them. “Suit up.”

Steve hesitated as he walked out of the airport hangar. He knew this wouldn’t end well and regret filled his body at the thought of Layna and Kara. But he also knew he had to do this to protect them and the world.

Running out to the helicopter they had waiting for them, he watched as a device was thrown onto it, rendering its power useless. Then he waited as Tony and Rhodey landed in their suits and faced him.

“Wow, it’s so weird how you run into people at the airport.” He told the soldier as his face mask flipped open. “Don’t you think that’s weird?”

“Definitely weird.” Rhodey agreed sarcastically.

“Hear me out, Tony.” Steve tried negotiating first. “That doctor, the psychiatrist, he’s behind all of this.”

As he spoke, T’Challa jumped in dressed in his Black Panther suit. “Captain.”

Steve sighed. “Your Highness.”

“Anyway…” Tony continued. “Ross gave me thirty-six hours to bring you in. That was twenty-four hours ago. Can you help a brother out?”

“You’re after the wrong guy.” Steve told him.

Tony glared at him. “Your judgment is askew. Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday.”

“And there are five more super soldiers just like him.” Steve interrupted. “I can’t let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can’t.”

“Steve…” Natasha spoke, and he turned to face her. “You know what’s about to happen. Do you really wanna punch your way out of this one?”

“Please, Steve.” Turning around, Steve came face to face with Kara as she landed behind him in her Supergirl suit. “Please don’t do this. Whatever it is, we can work it out.”

“I don’t see how that’s possible, doll.”

Hearing the term of endearment hurt her heart. “Please. Think of Layna. You have a daughter at home who now knows you’re a wanted man. Think of what that’s doing to her.”

“I am thinking of Layna!” He raised his voice. “If those soldiers get out, they could come for her solely on the purpose that she’s our daughter. I’m trying to protect her. Can’t you see that?”

“Yes, I can, but this isn’t the way to do that.” She told him.

Tony sighed. “Alright, I’ve run out of patience. Underoos!”

Spider-Man came swinging in at that moment and webbed up Steve’s hands, taking the shield from him before landing on the roof of a van.

“Nice job, kid.” Tony told him.

“Thanks.” The teenager said back. “I could have stuck the landing a little better, it’s just…new suit. It’s nothing, Mr. Stark. It’s perfect thank you.”

“Yeah, we don’t really need to start a conversation.”

“Okay.” He said and then saluted. “Cap. Captain. Big fan. I’m Spider-Man.”

“Yeah, we’ll talk about it later.” Tony told him. “Just…good job.”

“Hey everyone.” Peter said quickly and Steve nodded to him.

“You’ve been busy.” He addressed Tony.

“And you’ve been a complete idiot.” Tony responded, anger in his voice. “Dragging in Clint, ‘rescuing’ Wanda and Pietro from a place they don’t even want to leave—a safe place—not to mention what you’ve done to my sister.

“I’m trying to keep…I’m trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart.”

Steve sighed. “You did that when you signed.”

Kara felt as though a dagger had entered her heart at his words, knowing he meant it for all of them. She just wondered what it meant for their future.

Seeing the look on her face, Tony had had enough. “Alright, we’re done. You’re gonna turn Barnes over; you’re gonna come with us, now, because it’s us…or a squad of J-SOC guys with no compunction about being impolite.”

“Please…” Kara begged him, tears threatening to fill her eyes as she heard another voice enter the conversation through his comms.

“We found it. Their Quinjet’s in hangar five, north runway.”

“Oh, Steve…”

Then he raised his arms in the air and an arrow broke through Peter’s webbing. “Alright, Lang.”

“Hey, guys,” Peter started talking again. “something’s…”

Suddenly, Kara saw something crawling on the shield and watched as it grew into a man, knocking Peter off the van. “What the hell?”

“Whoa, what the hell was that?” Rhodey asked in their comms.

Scott stood with the shield and handed it to Steve. “I believe this is yours, Captain America.”

“Oh, great.” Tony muttered and used his head’s up display to locate the others. “Alright, there’s three on the parking deck. Two of them are the Maximoffs, I’m gonna grab them.”

“I’ll come with you.” Kara told him, knowing he would need the backup.

“Rhodey, you wanna take Cap?” Tony asked his friend.

Rhodey lifted into the air at the same time the siblings flew off. “Got two in the terminal, Wilson and Barnes.”

“Barnes is mine.” T’Challa told him and took off running toward the terminal.

Peter, unsure of what to do in a fight, lifted his hand to his comm as Steve threw his shield at Rhodey. “Hey, Mr. Stark, what should I do?”

“What we discussed. Keep your distance and web them up.”

“Okay, copy that.”

Kara followed her brother as they went to find Wanda and watched as he shot explosives around her and Clint strategically so they wouldn’t hurt them. Flying down to them, she hovered next to Tony as he spoke.

“Wanda, I think you hurt Vision’s feelings.”

“You locked us in our rooms.”

“Okay, first, that’s an exaggeration.” He told her. “Second, I did it to protect you.”

“Hey Clint.” Kara said calmly. “Clearly retirement doesn’t suit you.”

“You got tired of shooting golf?” Tony asked the man and Clint sighed.

“Well, I played eighteen, shot eighteen.” The archer told them. “Just can’t seem to miss.”

Then he shot an arrow at Tony, who dodged it and blasted it in half. “There’s a first time for everything.”

“Made you look.”

Kara whipped around in time to see a silver blur pushing cars off the parking deck and shoved her brother out of the way as one hit her and she blasted through it. They both flew around, dodging cars until Tony hit the ground and she dropped over him, shielding him with her body until they were completely covered in a pile of cars.

“Multiple contusions detected.” Kara heard FRIDAY tell her brother.

“Yeah, I detected that, too.” He croaked out.

Hearing her brother’s shaky voice under the rubble, Kara became pissed off. She knew these were her friends, but they were trying to hurt her family and now she wanted to show them who they were messing with.

Blasting the cars off of them, she screamed out in frustration as she saw an explosion go off back where she’d left Rhodey, Steve, T’Challa, and Scott. This had all gotten out of hand and now the real fight was beginning.
