Chapter 1

Peter was going through breathing exercises in the elevator. The Avengers and Nick Fury were up there waiting for him. He had decided that he trusted them, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t nervous. The doors opened and he walked stiffly to where everyone was gathered. “You sure you’re ready? I got everyone together, but you don’t look ready.” Tony said gently.

“I’m ready, just nervous. I don’t want any of you to think of me differently, you know?” Spidey said hesitantly, taking a deep breath. He pulled off his mask. There was a long moment of silence before Natasha slapped Tony. “Whoa! Hey, hey. You hit anybody, you hit me!” Peter told her sternly.

“I can’t. You’re a child.” Natasha said sourly.

“Yeah, and that’s not his fault!” Peter snapped.

“I don’t know that I feel comfortable having a kid on the team.” Steve announced.

“He’s a lot more capable than most of you.” Fury stated calmly. Everything froze to look at him.

“Hi, Uncle Fury.” Peter said sheepishly.

“Hey, Pete. Anyway, did you know this kid helped me discover Hydra was invading Shield? When he was a toddler, the kid would cry any time something was wrong, even if no one else knew it was wrong.” Fury explained. “We only missed Pierce because he was never around to test.”

“You’re his uncle?” Steve asked.

“You bet your ass I am.” Fury said sharply.

“But he’s… not…”

“You sure you wanna finish that sentence, son?” Fury asked, one eyebrow raised in challenge.

“Sorry, some things still haven’t… normalized in my head.” Steve said, looking sincerely apologetic and very embarrassed. “I know things have changed, I just haven’t really seen them, if that makes sense.”

“Don’t worry, Uncle Fury, I’ll start catching him up. I don’t think the Avengers get out as often as vigilantes do, but I didn’t really put two and two together before.” Peter offered.

“Sounds good, kid, but what’s the plan?” Fury asked as the Avengers started feeling weirdly out of their depth.

“Patrols. It’s a good way to improve all parts of this job, I’ve found. You interact with civilians, you get to practice your moves, you can work on strategies, you work with the full scale between bad and good, and you get better at it over time.” Peter explained. Fury nodded.

“You heard the man. You will be joining the vigilante community in daily patrols for the foreseeable future.” Fury announced.

“Okay, shouldn’t be hard walking grandmas across the street.” Clint chirped.

“Of course.” Fury agreed, walking away.

“I think that was sarcasm.” Bucky muttered.
