Brain Damage
I was cold. It makes sense when you heart stops beating as your circulation slows down you feel cold but this was not that. I was floating and then I wasn’t.
I hit something… I hit it pretty hard too because I felt sore. Makes sense considering I jumped from about 20 floors up just to make sure the job got done.
But it was over. It was done and I was free except I didn’t feel free.
I kept hearing this annoyingly but strangely familiar beeping and the smell… it smelled like I was in a hospital.
I opened my eyes and everything was bright. Way too bright.
I groaned rubbing my eyes trying to ease the burn and the headache. I really shouldn’t have mixed drinks the way I did.
I looked down at my lap and noticed my blanket. It wasn’t grey. Or white or black or nothing I had seen before.
I looked around and noticed that the walls of the room were grey but the abstract painting in front of my bed and the happy faces on the pain description chart were strange looking.
“You’re awake.” A nurse said walking in and immediately turning down the volume on the heart rate monitor.
“Where am I?” I asked.
“You’re in the Neuro observation ward at New York Metropolitan Hospital…” She started.
“New York?” I interrupted.
“Yes.” She started.
“That’s not right.” I said.
“Miss…” She started.
“I’ve never been to New York.” I said. “I’m from LA. That’s where I was before I…”
And that’s when I stopped talking. If I said I tried to kill myself by jumping off a building they’d put me in an involuntary psychiatric hold.
“I fell.” I said finishing my previous thought.
“You fell down?” She asked not believing me.
“Fell off a roof.” I said clearing that up. “Too much tequila.”
“Do you feel okay?” She said immediately checking my vitals.
“Uh actually I think you should get a CT or MRI of my head.” I said staring at the painting.
“Does your head hurt?” She asked immediately flashing a light in my eyes. “Dizziness? Lightheadedness?”
“No but…” I said still staring at the painting. “I’m seeing things I shouldn’t be able to see.”
She looked at me confused.
“I’m going to go get your doctor.” She said immediately running out.
