The water erupted from her lungs, bringing back the pain. If dying felt like slipping into a dream, coming back to life felt like being hit by a truck.

"Oh Jesus," Eve's voice was breathy and frantic. "Oh God, stay with me."

She knew of Eve's hands on her face, stroking her hair and rubbing her arms.

"Don't leave me, Villanelle!"

Eve's voice was so commanding, she couldn't object.

"Does it hurt?"

A weak nod.

"Good." Eve sniffed wetly before she started to pick her up.

"Eve, stop," she could barely croak out.

"Shut up," Eve had none of that.
