Doctor Visit
Inspiration struck so here's another chapter for ya'll! Don't get used to this once I'm back at wok time will be limited once again so enjoy!
To say the next morning was uneventful would be an understatement. To say it started out well would be an outright lie. Waking up went okay initially, Natasha waking up when Yelena stretched with a drowsy yawn before she snuggled closer. The two cuddled for a few minutes before Wanda woke up next to them, Kate still sleeping peacefully although she had been starting to stir a bit. That was where the trouble started. Not used to wearing a cast, Kate had given a small whine as she stretched before throwing her arm out, accidentally smacking Wanda right in the face. Wanda had given a small cry as she shot up, hands clutching her now bleeding nose as Kate panicked next to her.
“I sorry, it an asident, I sorry!” she cried, curling into herself as she covered her head.
Normally Wanda would have laughed it off, but she was trying to figure out how to comfort the toddler whilst stopping her nose from bleeding. Kate soon started crying, tiny stifled sobs escaping as Yelena began to cry as well. Natasha pulled both girls close as she waved Wanda off to get her nose taken care of.
“Go on, I’ve got them. Come back once that’s seen to or if you need to go to medical,” Nat ordered, pressing a kiss to the witch’s cheek before rocking the two girls as she muttered soothing words. Wanda thanked her before rushing to the bathroom, and when she came out a few moments later both of them had calmed down. Kate still sniffled miserably, her thumb in her mouth as she soothed herself. She glanced up when Wanda came back before looking down guiltily. Wanda came and kneeled before her, lifting her face up and wiping away her tears with a gentle thumb.
“Sowwy,” Kate lisped, sniffling as a couple more tears fell.
“It’s okay, honey, I know it was an accident. You didn’t do anything wrong, sweet girl, I promise, so you aren’t going to be in any trouble. So, no more tears, let’s get some food in our bellies before we head down to medical, sound good?” she asked, giving her a small smile. Kate looked at her for a moment, searching for something then nodding when she seemed to find it, holding her arms out to be held. Wanda hoisted her up as she stood, giving a small spin to make her giggle. Yelena watched from Natasha’s arms, eyes following them as she grinned at her friend’s laughter. She squealed when Natasha quickly stood up, tossing her in the air a bit as she headed for the kitchen.
“Ok rooskaya, any thoughts on what we want for breakfast?” Natasha asked as she set her on the counter. “We don’t have a lot since we need to go to the store but you can help me see what our options are.”
Yelena happily agreed as she stood on the counter, holding her sister’s shoulder for balance as they looked through the cabinets. They soon settled on oatmeal, as long as there was cinnamon sugar added to it. Kate watched them from her spot in Wanda’s arms, still feeling a bit sad over this morning but trying to ignore it. Wanda was right, it had been an accident. She leaned her head against the brunette’s collarbone, enjoying the warm skin not covered by her sleep shirt. Wanda noticed her pulling at her shirt a bit, and had a fair idea of what she was wanting but decided to wait until speaking with Dr. Cho. The hot cereal was soon finished, Yelena grinning wildly as she was allowed to shake the cinnamon sugar into each bowl. They made their way to the table, Wanda stopping for a minute to get them both sippy cups with milk to go with it. They didn’t have a booster seat for Kate, but a few books to raise her up with one for Yelena as well sufficed for the time being.
The next challenge came with eating their food. While as adults both Yelena and Kate were ambidextrous, as children Kate was right-handed which was now out of commission, making eating with silverware difficult. She jabbed her spoon into the bowl, trying to scoop out a bite but continuing to drop it back in the bowl, on the table, or even in her lap once. She soon grew frustrated and threw her spoon down with an angry grunt.
“Kate, we don’t throw our silverware. I know it’s hard and I’ll help you, but we don’t throw things when get mad, understood?” Wanda asked as she picked up the plastic spoon.
Kate turned to her with a pout but nodded her head. “Spoon bad,” she grumped, tiny arms crossing over her chest.
“It’s not bad sweet girl, it’s just hard with only one hand. I’ll help you, now open up,” Wanda cooed gently, getting a small spoonful and guiding it into the toddler’s eager mouth. Kate chewed happily, her good hand now tapping on the table as she got her breakfast.
“Do you like it, Katie? I added the sugar, it’s the most important part!” Yelena chirped, big eyes on Kate.
Kate nodded as she licked her lips. “Yummy,” she said, dancing in her seat a little bit. Yelena beamed at the praise as she went back to her own breakfast.
Wanda and Natasha made eye contact, both chuckling a bit and thanking the universe for this crisis being averted. Soon everyone had finished their breakfast, going to get ready for the day and making sure all teeth were brushed. Yelena was soon zipping around, jeans and a pink shirt with bunnies on as Natasha chased after her with socks. They would need to go shopping for shoes but her feet would at least be covered. Wanda took a little bit longer with Kate, changing her pull up and making sure she was clean and dry before putting a thick layer of rash cream on. Kate just watched her, lip pouting slightly as she was dressed in little leggings and a yellow shirt with kittens. She fully pulled her feet back when she saw the lacey socks.
“No foot prisons, they itchy!” she grumped, trying to hide her feet under the throw pillow.
Wanda looked at her as she took in what she said before glancing down at the socks. They were super cute, little lace cuffs on the top, but as she ran her thumb over it she could feel how scratchy they were. She would hate to wear these, no wonder Kate didn’t want to. “Ok sweetie, no foot prisons, but we will need to get a new system in place. We will happily hear what you have to say, and you are allowed to tell us if you don’t like something. I am so proud of you for saying you don’t want to wear these, but you need to tell us what you do like, ok? We can’t help you if we don’t know. So be honest, you don’t seem to like these clothes very much. What would you like to have instead?”
Kate tilted her head at her, making Wanda melt at her puppy like demeanor as the tot seemed to think this over. She looked down a moment before looking up shyly through her hair. “Dinosaurs?”
Wanda beamed at the tiny whisper that came out. “Good girl, we can get some things with dinosaurs later. For now, we need to go see Dr. Cho, she is really nice and is going to look at your owies and give us medicine to help you feel better.”
“Mommy and Daddy there? They always talk to ‘em then I don’t see them no more,” Kate asked, her face paling slightly as her eyes widened in fear.
“No baby, they won’t. We’re going to be taking care of you right now while they can’t. Is that okay with you?” Wanda asked, using all of her willpower to keep her anger at bay.
Kate nodded, moving close for a cuddle and only asking for her passy before going silent. Wanda held her close and handed it over, letting her snuggle as close as she could. Natasha had finally gotten socks on Yelena, hoisting the giggling blonde over her shoulder before leading the way to medical. Dr. Cho was waiting for them, a grim look on her face as she looked through a couple of files. She looked up when they walked in, forcing a gentle smile on her face as she looked at the two children. Kate was doing her best to burrow into Wanda’s chest while Yelena just gave her an easy smile from Natasha’s shoulder while calling out a hello.
“Good morning girls, my name is Dr. Cho. I’m going to be doing an exam on you Kate and then I need to get a blood sample from both of you. Does that sound ok?”
Kate just whimpered as Yelena looked a little apprehensive. Wanda moved forward and sat on the exam table with Kate, carefully prying her loose and turning her so she was facing everyone. “Don’t worry sweet girl, I’ll be here the whole time okay? But we can’t help you to feel better if we don’t know where all of your owies are, and we need to check some blood to make sure we are keeping you nice and healthy.”
Kate just huffed but didn’t fight as the exam began. Yelena crawled up and held her hand as Dr. Cho looked into her eyes and ears, then listed to her heart and lungs. She cried a bit when they stripped her to look at her rash and bruises, not stopping until her clothes were back on and she was in a less vulnerable state. She weighed and measured Kate next, eyes narrowing slightly at the low numbers. Soon it came time for the blood test, both girls crying as they were held still for the needle. This was soon forgotten however when they were each presented with a sucker, both girls happily enjoying their treat as the adults spoke above them.
“Yelena seems to be perfectly healthy for her age, a bit small but that fits how she was as an adult. This would have been before she went through the Red Room so it fits. Kate on the other hand is on the low end of each spectrum. They got her weight wrong yesterday, I’m guessing based on the report that her constant moving messed with the scale. She’s 21.4 pounds and 25 inches high, she’s so small. Two year olds should be bigger than this, let alone a three year old no matter how recent that is. I’ve been glancing through her medical file, I got Tony to pull her files from when she was a child. The amount of ER visits is absolutely disgusting. No one reported anything with the police, although it looks like a few nurses filed with their supervisor before it was ‘lost’ and then they were let go. Has she been asking to use the bathroom on her own?” Cho asked as she looked over the files.
“No, but she uses the toilet easily when we have asked her to try. She has the pull ups but hasn’t seemed to utilize them much other than during the night. Granted we’ve only had them since yesterday so we are not actually sure,” Natasha answered.
“Don’t be surprised if she isn’t potty trained, many children from abusive homes tend to take longer. You said earlier she was eating well, so just keep feeding her. Maybe add some calorie dense snacks. Use the rash cream twice a day and her rash and sore spots should clear up. I will also call you when the results of their bloodwork comes in, which should be in the next day or two. Now you had asked on sleeping arrangements, I honestly would recommend a crib, or a bed with rails. She’s technically old enough to be in a toddler bed but she’s so small I’m worried about if she fell out. Did you have any other questions?” Cho inquired after dropping the small bomb of information.
“Yes. I know it’s more for infants but what about skin to skin? She was trying to hide down my shirt earlier and has been pulling it down to cuddle with more skin. Would this benefit her?” Wanda asked as she laced her fingers with Natasha’s for comfort. Her poor babies, both had gone through so much.
“Well, most people don’t do much after the first year, but there’s nothing that says it won’t be beneficial. It could help with her anxiety and help her transition into everything while they are like this. Yelena may also benefit although she may not really need it,” Cho told them thoughtfully as she thought this through. “I think that’s all for now. I do want to see them again in about a week to check on Kate’s rash as well as see if she’s gained any weight. For now you two are free to go, I’m sure these two are ready to do something fun.”
The two Avengers thanked her before collecting the girls and heading back upstairs. Kate was yawning while Yelena skipped on the tiles.
“She gets sleepy a lot,” Yelena noted as she watched Kate rest against Wanda’s shoulder.
“Her body is spending a lot of energy trying to heal her injuries, rooskaya. It makes her sleepy, plus she’s younger than you and needs more rest,” Natasha explained as she held her hand.
They arrived back on their floor, Yelena heading for the living room to play with the blocks while Wanda settled on the couch with Kate. She chewed her lip in thought for a moment, debating on going into the bedroom for a while before deciding to hell with it and stripped down to her bra. She took off Kate’s shirt, pressing a kiss to her brow as Kate watched her in confusion. Wanda leaned back against the arm of the couch, urging Kate to lay against her while pulling a throw blanket over them. Kate watched her with wide eyes for a bit before slowly relaxing, gradually easing herself to lay fully against Wanda and even daring to snuggle closer. Her eyes slipped shut as she signed contently enjoying the warmth surrounding her from both their bare skin and the soft blanket. Her breaths evened out as she fell into a relaxed sleep, body growing heavy atop Wanda’s chest.
Yelena looked back at them before continuing with her block building, making a series of towers and bridges while Natasha watched. Nat snapped multiple pictures before taking advantage of the peace to make out their grocery list, occasionally asking Yelena what snack she wanted while picking out baby snacks for Kate. They would have to go out fully to go clothes shopping, as well as children furniture, but at least their groceries could be picked up.
Thank the heavens for small miracles.
