Summary
This was not how Natasha thought her day was going to go. First, she and Clint had been enjoying a relaxing day at the Tower, only for Fury to call them down to the infirmary. Finding out it was for Yelena and Kate, who had been on a short “in and out” mission had nearly given her a heart attack; finding the two little girls had made her think she had had it for a moment. After the girls, or at least Yelena as Kate had hidden and refused to move, had been examined, poked, and prodded for over an hour, the only sure facts they had were pretty few.

IKEA and Karen's

Yeah, not gonna lie this one MAY have gotten away from me a bit haha. Hope you all enjoy! I am officially back from my cruise and catching up on work as we get into the holiday season. I'll try to update when I can but to avoid the grumpy people I make no promises. Happy Wednesday!

Natasha glanced over the list, making sure she hadn’t forgotten anything. It seemed good but she better check with Wanda to be sure.

“Hey babe, is there anything we need to get before I send the order in?” Natasha asked as she looked over the list. Silence greeted her, making her look up in confusion. “Babe?”

Wanda didn’t answer, one hand keeping Kate securely on her chest while the other held her phone as she scrolled, her brows pinching together as she read something. Natasha frowned as she turned to face her, waving a hand to get the witch’s attention. Wanda started a bit as she came out of her head, whatever she had been reading had sucked her in completely.

“You ok, Wanda?” Natasha asked, careful to keep her voice low.

“Yes, I was just reading over Kate’s old files. I asked Dr. Cho to send them to me. Did you know she was a micro preemie?” Wanda asked, eyes far away as her thoughts took over.

“No, I did not. If you want later tonight when the girls are in bed, we can go over them. Real quick, mind seeing if we need anything else on the list? I think I have everything food wise, we will have to go get the furniture but this will be able to be picked up,” Natasha offered while handing her phone over.

Wanda perused the list a moment while adding a couple of things. “We will need to be careful on what kind of peanut butter we use. Kate is allergic to almonds and sometimes they have them added in.”

“Good to know, ok we can do the pick up last or even send one of the guys. I texted Pepper while we were in medical and she got us some car seats for them, I think Happy has set them up in the SUV, so we are ready to go whenever you are,” Natasha told her as she leaned over to press a light kiss on Wanda’s lips.

“How about we go in about an hour? Gives this one more time to sleep and you can play with Yelena,” Wanda hinted with a grin as Yelena did a silent cheer while knocking her tower over.

Natasha grinned and nodded before quickly moving to the floor by her sister, making the tiny girl squeal happily that they were getting to play together before shopping. Their tower game soon became a weird version of Jenga, only you kept going if the whole tower didn’t fall. Yelena was laughing her head off, hands covering her mouth to muffle the sound. Not that it would have mattered, even at barely 3 Kate slept like a rock. Wanda watched them lovingly as she held Kate to her, rubbing her back soothingly when Kate began to squirm in a baby dream.

“You know, if we have Steve or Clint pick up the groceries that would maybe give us some time to go to the P-A-R-K after we get furniture. Well depending on how that goes anyway,” Wanda mused as Yelena scrambled off for a minute to grab some of the board games they had.

“Nattie, Candyland, please?” she begged, holding the game out with a small pout.

“Ok, rooskaya, but just one or two games then we need to go do some shopping,” Natasha told her as she took the box to start setting up the board.

“But Kate’s sleepin’, we can’t wakes her up!” Yelena told her, eyes big as she looked at Natasha like she was crazy.

“We will want to if we want her to get any sleep tonight. Don’t worry Lena, I promise it’s ok to wake her from a nap. It just helps her sleep at night instead of being awake,” Natasha told her kindly before holding out the little colored characters. “Which color do you want?”

Yelena grabbed the blue, looking over at Kate one more time before beginning the game. She babbled slightly about how amazing it would be to go to Candyland if it was real, and that the chocolate swamp would be her favorite place. Natasha just smiled, encouraging her now and then to keep going as they played. She knows she hadn’t fully appreciated Yelena at this age, no matter how much she had come to love her back then, and now she couldn’t get enough. They played three rounds before Wanda decided that it was time for Kate to wake up.

Making sure to still keep her touch gentle to not aggravate her injuries, Wanda rubbed Kate’s back a little more firmly while gently calling her name. Kate stirred slightly, her brow wrinkling as she tried to burrow deeper into Wanda’s chest so she could keep sleeping. Wanda chuckled while pulling the blanket down a bit and giving a few pats on her bottom. Kate whined as her eyes fluttered open, her free hand making a fist and rubbing at her eyes sleepily.

“No, ‘Anda, I seepin’s,” she moaned, pouting up at the woman.

“I can see that,” Wanda laughed as she moved the grumbly child to sit next to her on the couch. “We have to go do some things so we need to get ready. Then if we have time, we may go somewhere fun after.”

Kate just looked at her sleepily, watching as she pulled her shirt back on before getting up to head to the bedroom to brush her hair. Natasha went to get up and add Kate to the game but the youngster had quickly scooted off the couch, falling to her knees but pushing herself back up and toddling after the Sokovian. She had just reached the bedroom door when she saw Wanda using her magic to brush her long hair while touching up her make up. The tiny gasp startled her, making her look to the doorway at the shocked child. Oops. So much for trying to be discreet.

“You magic!” Kate exclaimed, looking up at her in awe. She seemed to be thinking on something for a moment before she scurried out of the room, only to return a moment later with her stuffed dog.

“Buddy fly?” she asked, holding up her toy and bouncing a little in place.

To say Wanda was surprised was putting it mildly. She never would have expected to see this much excitement from Kate right now, but apparently magic was magic to children and they wanted to see it. Shaking her head slightly to clear it, she smiled at the giddy girl before kneeling to be closer to her level.

“Ok, but we can’t do that while we’re out today ok? This will be an at home only sort of thing,” Wanda told her with a wink before flicking her fingers at the stuffed dog.

Immediately Buddy began to float, dancing through the air and booping his fake muzzle on Kate’s cheeks and nose. Kate laughed and clapped as she bounced after it, loving the new game. Yelena and Natasha appeared a moment later, drawn by the shrieks of joy Kate was letting out as she chased the dancing toy. Yelena let out a whoa as she saw the toy fly around, eyes darting between that and Wanda’s glowing fingers.

“Lena, lookie! ‘Anda has magic!” Kate squeaked as she ran forward, grabbing Yelena’s hand and dragging her after the toy.

“I thought we were going to wait to tell them?” Natasha teased as she sat on the bed, watching the two girls move around the room.

“She saw me using it to get ready. I couldn’t really say she didn’t actually see anything, so this seemed like a good way to show them. Not that they seem to mind at all,” Wanda laughed as the children began jumping for Buddy, both giggling madly as she bobbed him just out of reach. It warmed both of their hearts to see the girls so happy, just carefree children playing.

“This is the first I’ve seen her acting like a, well like a kid since this happened. I’m glad she seems to have latched onto you,” Natasha noted warmly as she watched Kate tiptoe to reach the stuffed dog.

“Don’t think I haven’t seen how you are with Yelena. I know you’re thrilled to have her back, even just for a little while,” Wanda sing songed as she leaned against her lover.

They carried on with the game for another few minutes before Wanda decided it was time to end it. They still had a lot of shopping to do. Depositing Buddy on the bed, she stood and quickly scooped both girls up, earning laughing shrieks as she bounced them in her arms.

“Ok my dears, time to get ready to do some shopping. So, let’s go!” she ordered while marching out the door to Yelena’s room.

Once she reached it, she playfully tossed both girls on the bed to make them laugh before going through the things Happy had picked up. He had gotten some shoes for them, but she didn’t think they would fit. Both girls were smaller than their age should be and both she and Natasha knew they would be too big for them to wear. They could wear socks though, keep their toes warm. Yelena still had her socks on from before, but Kate was adamant on not wearing ‘foot prisons’, but as it was the beginning of October, she needed to have some sort of covering. She pulled out a pair of plain white socks, feeling them over and was happy with how soft they were. Kate whined a little when she brought them over but let her put them on her feet after feeling them and finding they weren’t itchy.

“Everybody ready?” Natasha checked, looking them over and finding them acceptable to head outside.

“I think so, why don’t we all use the bathroom really quick before we leave and then we can start shopping?” Wanda suggested.

Yelena nodded and raced for the bathroom while Kate shuffled on her feet as she shook her head.

“Don’t gotta,” she said simply, raising her arms for a cuddle.

“I know sweet girl but let’s just try, ok? For me?” Wanda asked as she lifted her up and went to the spare bathroom. Kate huffed slightly but did as asked, and soon they were heading down for the garage. Oddly enough Kate wanted to walk here, curious about the elevator as she and Yelena pressed their faces to the glass to watch the fast-moving lights.

“We’re goin’ super-fast, Tasha!” Yelena chirped, turning to her sister with a big grin.

“We are, but it’s a big building so we have to or we will be stuck here half the day,” Natasha agreed.

“No, that’s boring!” Yelena told her before turning back to watch the lights, her hand reaching out and grabbing Kate’s.

Kate stayed quiet, pacifier firmly in place as she leaned on the blonde. Her nap had put her in a much better mood, but she wasn’t looking forward to shopping. It took forever and was so boring!

They soon found themselves in the garage, surrounded by multiple cars. They made their way to the deep red SUV on the other end, pleased to note the two seats already set up for the girls. Yelena easily went into hers, poking Natasha playfully on the cheek when she fastened her in. The two siblings giggled a moment before turning at the teary whine. Kate was fussing wildly as she arched her back to try and keep the straps from holding her in. Wanda hushed her gently as she used her magic to call Buddy to her, making him sway a bit in front of them to distract her. Kate watched it a moment as Wanda gently pushed her so she was fully sitting, quickly fastening the straps to buckle her in. Big fat tears rolled down Kate’s cheeks as she pouted up at her, tiny whimpers escaping her trembling lips.

“Oh, sweet girl it’s ok. This is just to keep you safe in case we have an accident on the road. We’re just going to go to the store and then we can cuddle as much as you want. Okay Kate?” Wanda told her, placing a kiss on the tiny head when Kate relented with a small nod, clutching Buddy close.

“Good girl, we will be there before you know it. In the meantime, I bet Yelena knows TONS of fun things to do in the car,” Wanda praised, holding back a laugh as Yelena grinned happily before launching into a thorough speech about all the games they could play in the car and how she learned it on her family vacation the year before.

Wiping the tears away, Wanda made sure both girls were preoccupied before closing the doors and getting into the front seat. Natasha shot her a small smile, reaching over the console to lace their fingers together as she pulled out of the garage. They drove quietly, both listening to Yelena teach Kate how to play I Spy. Kate wasn’t quite sure how it fully worked but enjoyed the game anyway as Yelena guided her along. It barely took them 20 minutes before they were parking at IKEA, both girls interested in the large letters.

“Ok girls, a couple of ground rules before we head in. You can walk if you want to, but if you are you either need to be holding onto the cart or someone’s hand the whole time. It’s a big store and we don’t want you to get lost. No talking to strangers, and if we somehow get separated you need to find someone who works there and ask for them to call for us. Understood?” Natasha asked, waiting until both girls nodded before moving to exit the car and help them out.

Kate once again wanted to walk, free hand holding onto Wanda’s as she clutched Buddy in her casted arm. Her little hand barely wrapped around three of Wanda’s fingers, but she kept a tight grip as she toddled along. Wanda kept her pace slow so she could keep up, happy she was gaining a bit of confidence to walk on her own. They soon made their way inside, and both women scooped the girls up to perch on their hips as they went up the escalator.

“Tasha, I’m a big girl, I can walk!” Yelena complained as she squirmed a bit.

“I know you are detka, but it’s easy to snag your socks on these and we haven’t gotten new shoes for you yet so just while we have to use the escalators, ok?” Natasha asked, kissing her cheek soundly when she nodded.

“I walk too!” Kate pouted, big eyes looking up at Wanda pleadingly. The swelling on her right eye had gone down significantly thanks to Cho’s medicine, but it was still pretty bruised. Despite this, the puppy eyes were almost impossible to resist with those baby blues staring at her.

“I know sweet girl, once we get a cart I’ll let you walk,” Wanda promised as they got off at the top and headed for the carts.

Kate gave a small huff but stayed still as they pulled one out of the bunch, grabbing onto Wanda’s hand as soon as she was set back down. Yelena kept a hand on the basket as she chattered away to Natasha about all of the furniture around them, barely noticing as they were led through a shortcut to the children’s section. They had barely stepped into it when her eye was caught by one of the bed sets.

“Tasha, look, that one has a fort under it!” she squeaked excitedly, pointing to one of the elevated beds with a desk area under it.

“It does, but I think a regular bed will work just fine. How about you be my big helper and look for a bed with rails or a crib for Kate? We don’t want her falling off the bed and hurting herself,” Natasha asked, smiling as Yelena gave an eager nod and grabbed her hand to drag her around to search, little socked feet making no noise on the tile.

Wanda laughed as she watched them go, keeping one eye on Kate as she looked around at the beds. There was a cute twin bed with a small canopy that she thought would be perfect for Yelena. Shooting a picture to Nat, she grabbed one of the papers to find it downstairs before continuing to look around. She found a few things that would be useful, a stool for the bathroom as well as some small baskets for their toys. They didn’t REALLY need all of this, they had no clue how long the girls would be children, but she couldn’t help but want to go the full nine yards. Judging by how Natasha was grabbing some things as well, she had a feeling that she felt the same. She also noticed Natasha waving a paper in her direction, pointing to a small bed with full railing around it. It looked like a toddler bed sized crib with shorter rails, so perfect for Kate. She sent a thumbs up back and smiled as Yelena threw her arms up in a cheer before pulling Natasha to look at the animal shaped lamps. Knowing they would be preoccupied for a bit, she turned back to the baskets and grabbed a few small purple ones.

“What do you think of these, Katie Kate? You think these would be good for your toys?” Wanda asked, kneeling down to show her the baskets as she tried to engage her.

Kate looked at them a moment before giving a firm nod, beaming at the witch when they were put in the cart. Maybe shopping wasn’t so bad, this was actually kind of fun! She moved to hold onto the cart rather than Wanda’s hand as they looked around, Wanda getting a few books and things as Natasha and Yelena looked around at the other beds. Another mother with her two sons soon came to their area, the woman telling the boys to stay in the kid area before going to look at the storage bins. Kate felt herself get nervous as they got closer, fingers tightening on the cart. Wanda watched from a short distance away, keeping half her attention on Kate while she looked at some small chairs.

“Hey, where’d you get the dog?” one boy asked bluntly as he came to stand by her. He was a lot bigger than her, even bigger than Yelena.

“Home,” she mumbled, hunching in on herself a little bit.

“Your face looks funny. Is it always like that?” he teased, laughing when she pouted a bit.

“I got an owie but ‘Anda says it’ll be good soon,” she grumped, trying to turn away when he snatched Buddy out of her hand.

“Then you won’t mind me taking this,” he laughed, holding it above his head as she tried to reach it.

“No, Buddy mine!” she cried, tears welling up when she couldn’t reach.

The boy just laughed for a minute but stopped when the stuffed dog was taken from him.

“Hey!” he shouted, glaring at Wanda who had stepped in and gotten Kate’s toy back.

“Hey yourself, where is your mother child? I would like to speak to her about your rude behavior and trying to steal from her,” she said coldly, fixing him with an icy stare as she lifted an upset Kate into her arms.

“My mom is gonna get you, I had it first!” he told her before screaming for his mother. The woman came scurrying over, a glare coming onto her face as she faced them.

“What are you doing to my son? I should have you arrested!” she snapped, hands on her son’s shoulders as he stared at them smugly.

“Actually, I was going to ask you this. Your son has not only been rude and mean to my Kate, but he also tried to take Buddy from her. Now I may have only been in America a few years, but from what I understand the definition of stealing is worldwide. I want an apology and then for you to leave us be, or do we need to involve someone else?” Wanda asked, voice calm but her eyes daring the woman to try anything.

“My sweet Brandon would never steal! Maybe you should teach your daughter to share,” the woman sneered, eyes looking distastefully at Kate.

“She doesn’t have to share if she doesn’t want to. He also was being cruel to her, which there is no excuse for,” Wanda snapped, the altercation gaining Natasha’s attention as she led Yelena back to them.

“Her face does look funny! Not my fault she’s ugly,” Brandon defended, only to yelp a moment later when he was shoved from the side.

“She is not! She’s the prettiest baby ever! You’re a big meanie, say you’re sorry!” Yelena yelled, stomping her foot as she glared at him.

“Yelena, we don’t push. Even if someone clearly deserves it,” Natasha scolded lightly as she glared at the boy.

“Your children are out of control! Neither of you should have been allowed to have children, what would your husbands think?” the woman shrieked as she glared at Yelena.

“My sister and Wanda are girlfriends, and I don’t think they care,” Yelena groused, hands on her tiny hips as she stared back at the older woman, flinching a bit at the large sneer she got in response.

“Well, no wonder you two are such ill-behaved ingrates. Your people should never have been allowed to have children in your care. Look at that one, her face is covered in bruises and her arm is broken! The police will be hearing about this,” the woman threatened as she pulled out her phone.

“My mommy and daddy get mad sometimes. ‘Anda and Tasha are making my owies better. You’re a scary lady,” Kate told her, trying to hide against Wanda’s chest at the outraged gasp the woman let out.

“You, girl, are a horrible brat! No wonder your parents did that, I can’t blame them,” she yelled, huffing angrily as an employee and member of security came forward.

“Ma’am, I’m going to have to ask that you leave the premises,” the security guard said firmly.

“See, what did I tell you? Now you are getting what you deserve!” the woman crowed with a smug smile.

“No ma’am, you are the one who needs to leave. We have a strict policy on harassing other customers. Now you and you kids need to go,” he clarified, ignoring the indignant huffs as the woman argued with him. The employee came over to Natasha and Wanda, eyeing them carefully as Natasha held back an angry Yelena as Wanda comforted a now crying Kate.

“Are you all alright? Do they need anything? I am so sorry for this; we have a zero-tolerance policy for harassing other customers. We have a quiet area if you want to go there for a few minutes? I can keep your cart by my desk until you are done if you want,” she offered.

“Thank you, we would greatly appreciate that,” Wanda said. After getting directions, she moved swiftly to get to it, hearing Natasha close behind her as they carried their charges over.

It didn’t take long to find it, both settling the girls in their laps after they sunk down in the plush chairs. Yelena leaned on Natasha, an angry pout on her face as she started to calm down. Kate’s cries had settled to whimpers, thumb brushing her lip as Wanda rocked her. A quick flick of her wrist had her pacifier in hand, her body fully relaxing as she sucked. Her free hand snuck down the front of Wanda’s shirt slightly, hand resting on the top of her breast as she lightly gripped her bra. Natasha hummed a small lullaby as she trailed her hands up and down Yelena’s back, calming the small blonde until she had fully relaxed against her. Kate had gone limp on Wanda’s chest, eyes big as she looked around the room curiously. They stayed for a short while longer before two tiny growls filled the room. Kate didn’t seem to notice but Yelena started giggling.

“My tummy is talking,” she laughed, grinning up at Natasha.

“That it is! I think it may be time to get some lunch, who agrees?” Natasha asked as she grinned back at her sister.

“We do!” Wanda said as she bounced Kate a bit to make her giggle.

“Then let’s go!” Yelena cheered as she slid off of Natasha and to the floor, bouncing a bit as she waited on them.

“We need to get our cart first and then we can go, ok? Be patient rooskaya,” Natasha laughed, stretching once she was on her feet before helping Wanda up.

It barely took any time to get their cart and head over to the cafeteria, luckily it was right by the children’s section. Wanda subtly snatched a T Rex and husky plush as they walked by the bin, sneaking it into the cart when the girls weren’t looking. It would be a fun surprise later. Kate had once again wanted to walk, her tiny hand holding tightly onto Yelena’s as they followed Natasha like a pair of baby ducks. Wanda chuckled to herself as they found a table in easy eyesight of the cafeteria, making sure to get their purses before leaving the cart next to it while they go their food. A few orders of Swedish meatballs, veggies, and a couple of cake slices made up their lunch, juice boxes for the girls while the adults each got a beer. The joys of Sweden. None of the highchairs were available, so Wanda resigned herself to getting a little messy as she held Kate securely in her lap, cutting the meatballs and green beans into small pieces that would be easy to eat.

“Where the ghetti?” Kate asked, brow scrunched in confusion.

“Ghetti?” Natasha asked, sharing a confused look with Wanda.

“Yeah, for the balls!” Kate told her, pointing at the tiny meatballs.

“You mean spaghetti and meatballs?” Natasha confirmed, huffing a small laugh at the eager nod she was given.

“This is different, it doesn’t get spaghetti you just eat them with the gravy,” Wanda explained, spearing a small bite on her fork and getting some gravy on it before offering it to Kate. The toddler gave her an uneasy look but opened her mouth a bit to try it. Yelena had already tucked in, but all three stopped to watch her as she chewed. Kate seemed to contemplate the flavors for a moment as she swallowed her bite.

“It good,” she said simply, looking up at Wanda and opening her mouth like a baby bird for more food.

“Glad you like it,” Wanda laughed, the blunt answer amusing everyone.

Everyone enjoyed their lunch, the only small hiccup coming from the lingonberry jam. Neither girl liked it, Yelena almost spitting out her mouthful while Kate whined as she did spit hers back onto the plate.

“Gross,” Yelena groaned, sucking down some juice to wash the taste out.

“Goss,” Kate mimicked, free hand wiping her mouth as she shuddered.

The two adults knew they should tell them not to spit their food out, but both were trying too hard not to laugh to even consider a small scolding. The girl’s faces had been priceless, scrunched in pure disgust. The ironic part of it was they both liked the jam as adults, but it seemed that was something that had come with age. Wanda was basically holding her breath while Natasha was shaking lightly as they held their laughter in.

“Tasha, are you cold?” Yelena asked, concerned when she saw her sister shaking.

“No baby, just a little shiver but I’m ok,” Natasha assured her after a moment, making sure she was back in control before speaking. Across from her Wanda took a couple of deep breaths before she got herself under control as well.

Lunch was finished soon after, the two women then rushing through the bottom floor to get the furniture bought and then loaded into their car. They still had to get more clothes, and they desperately wanted to have time to take the girls to the park so they could play while the weather wasn’t too cold yet. Securing them in their seats didn’t take long at all, although both girls fussed a bit as they loaded the boxes in the back. The promise of turning the radio on when they left helped appease them, but Natasha knew that Yelena at least was getting antsy and needed to run around at some point. Finally managing to fit everything in, they got back in their car with Wanda at the wheel this time so they could head to the mall.

“You girls ready to go look at some clothes?” Wanda asked cheerfully, grinning at them to try and make it fun.

“Yes!” Yelena cheered, throwing her arms up as Kate just shrugged while playing with Buddy’s ears.

“Let’s go then,” Natasha ordered playfully, mentally prepping herself. She had no idea how this was going to go, but she sincerely hoped that it didn’t end in tears for any of them.
