Scene 6
Scene 6: May 23rd, 1986, Front Yard of Haileys’ 3:00pm
Hailey is waiting for Willow in her front yard with a picnic laid out, her expression is a mix of nervousness and hopefulness.
Willow comes into the camera view and sits down next to Hailey. She places down strawberries she brought with her down.
Hailey: (softly, she says this whilst smiling) Hey…About yesterday, I just wanted to say that-
Willow’s eyes widen slightly, and she cuts Hailey off.
Willow: No, no. Don’t apologize. I’m the one in the wrong. I shouldn’t have brought it up like that and-
Hailey: Stop, Willow. Just listen to me, okay?
Willow falters, nodding her head.
Hailey: I shouldn’t have lashed out at you like that. It was wrong of me to do that. After all…My dad, he-
Hailey takes a deep breath.
Hailey: He was always so horrible to me.
Willow nods and casts her gaze downward.
Willow: (quietly) I know.
Hailey briefly looks up at Willow but then goes back to talking.
Hailey: I just think that my anger at you was misplaced. I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at my dad. Part of me is so mad that I wish maybe that- (quiet, barely audible) Part of me wishes I could’ve gotten revenge of some sort. So, I shouldn’t have taken any anger out on you.
Willow: Do you think it's better for you? Now that he’s gone.
Hailey: (pause before responding) Yeah. I think that maybe my anger turned to sadness, or that maybe there’s really something wrong with me because I just-(she stops herself)
Willow looks up at Hailey, raising an eyebrow, silently telling her to finish.
Hailey: What matters is that he’s gone. And that things will be okay. Right?
Willow cracks a smile at Hailey, picking up a strawberry and popping it into her mouth, starting to eat it.
Willow: (after swallowing) That’s the spirit. Turn that frown upside down.
Willow hits Hailey’s shoulder playfully with her own shoulder.
Willow: Let’s just have some fun and not focus on the past - or the future. Just focus on now.
Hailey eventually smiles, a small laugh escaping her.
Hailey: Yeah. I think I like that idea.
