“I'm busy.”
You open your eyes to your mother waking you up. She opens your blinds to let the light in, you quickly turn away from the light into your pillows.
“You’re going to be late if you don’t get up right now,” she tells you, waiting for a response, “come on, you can’t miss another day,” still no response. She decided to sit on the end of your bed. You turned further away from her. “Please, your head of school will attack me if your attendance gets any lower.”
“I don’t want to go.” You finally say, you knew that wasn’t going t be a good enough reason for her to let you have a day off. She asks you for a legitimate reason but you're not sure what to say. You think about Spider-Man but tell her about Gwen instead, “its Gwen.. she’s been acting strange recently and I don’t know what to do.”
She laughs and tells you, “You’ve been friends for so long, i can’t believe you cant just ask her what’s going on!”
”But its not that easy-“ you try to tell her but she cuts you off laughing again.
“Yes it is, now go get ready,” she gets up and walks to the door, she stops just before it and turns back to you smiling. She’s waiting for you to move, to make sure you’ll actually do what she asked.
You pull the covers off and she leaves still smiling.
You end up getting to school late which means an hours detention after school but you didn’t mind. It’s actually exactly what you wanted.
You walk up to the door to the detention room. Looking through the glass, you don’t see anyone inside apart from the teacher. You open the door and step inside. You’d normally sit in the farthest corner where no one would see you through the door but couldn’t as someone was already sat there.
Peter Parker.
You talked to MJ about him, she told you he's friends with Gwen and MJ’s new boyfriend but that’s really all anyone knows about him.
Detention goes by fast, you focused on remembering the plan you and your mother made. You knew you’d get a detention but that’s what you wanted so you could think about what to say to Gwen. You decided you’d surprise her after she finishes work. You knew she gets of at 6, same time your detention finishes. It was 5:58 already. So you got you’re self ready to sprint out the door.
Her work is only 5 minutes away so you hoped if you ran you’d be able to make it before she left. She’d sometimes wait a little longer knowing you’d meet with her. It was something you used to do but haven’t got the chance recently.
The bell rang and the teacher didn't even have time to dismiss you as you were already out the door. Behind you, Peter also seems to be hurrying along the corridor. You run in different directions when you get out of the front doors.
Gwen’s work was just round the corner. You were determined to talk with her. Speeding up, you make it round the corner and see her just walking out through the doors. She walks half way down the stairs just as you stop at the bottom of them completely out of breath.
You haven’t ran like that for a while, you feel faint. Gwen grabs you and helps you down to the stairs just before you collapsed.
‘Hey..” you say through harsh breaths, “wanna go get a drink together?”
Gwen looks down at you, she gets up letting go of you then turns away, “i can’t,” she signs still looking away, “I'm busy.”
“Please, its really important,” You grab her hand and she finally looks at you, “you're the only one i can talk to about this and i really don’t know what to do.”
She looks at her watch ten nods, “Okay but it has to be fast, i really am busy.”
You lead her to the same cafe as yesterday. You don’t want to tell her about what happened with Spider-Man until you’ve sorted what’s happening with her. So instead you ask her why she’s ignoring you.
“I’m not ignoring you.. I’m just busy-“ Gwen’s phone ringing interrupted her, “See? It’s probably work.” She doesn’t answer it and turns it off instead.
“Please tell me what’s going on with you.” You weren’t buying her being so busy she can’t talk to you for five minutes.
Her phone rings again, she tells you she really needs to take it, “we can talk about this later.. okay?”
You nod and let her leave.
You watch as she answers the phone and smiles, she wouldn’t be smiling if it was actually work. Something felt wrong about this. Gwen started walking down the road so you decide to follow her. You needed to know what was going on and you were willing to do anything to find out.
You watch as she walks into the same alley way as you where yesterday. Your heart stings slightly as you try not to remember what was said there yesterday. You follow her trying your hardest to hide. If she found out you were following her it really wouldn’t help your friendship.
You stay there for a while, trying to listen to her conversation but can’t hear anything.
She stops talking and puts her phone down, you get ready to run again if she starts walking back to the main road.
She doesn’t. Instead she leans against a wall as if waiting for something.. or someone.
To your horror it wasn’t just someone she was waiting for. It was him.
Spiderman stood next to her, you didn’t even see what direction he came from. You were to focused on her to even see him.
They hug.
”You didn’t show up yesterday,” Spider-Man says as he steps back, “what happened?”
“I’ll tell you after we get out of here.” Gwen grabs hugs him again and he swings her up onto the roof top.
You fell to the floor in disbelief. Is that why she’s been acting that way? Because she’s with Spider-Man?
So this is why she knew he would be here.. because she met him here. But then why did she get you to meet him? Did she know how he felt and tried to set you up?
You’ve never been this confused.
Was she with him? Was that really the reason why she’s been acting so cold?
You knew you had to confront her now. Thus was all too confusing and you needed answers. You had to think of a plan to get her to tell you everything but it would have to wait till tomorrow.
You walk home still shocked. You had no idea of what to do now. Your mother greeted you as you closed the door behind you. “Did you speak with Gwen?” You shake your head no and she smiles again slightly, “try again tomorrow. I’m sure everything will be fine between you two by the end of the week.”
She pointed out you haven’t been feeling much pain from your soulmate recently. she made you tell her every time he hurt you (well himself) so she could make sure you weren’t actually injured.
you hadn’t realised this and it scared you.
You go to bed hoping tomorrow will be better and not as much of a mess as today has been but you know its probably just going to get worse.
Now you’re struggling to sleep not just because of him but now her too. You didn't want to lose your best friend but also didn’t want to lose your soulmate. You’ve never been so confused.
Should you feel pity and concern? or betrayed and angry?
