dusk

She wasn’t just like the sun, she was the sun. Of course, most other people would say this of her husband but Odin could never hold a flame to her. You knew that, not many others did. Perhaps none at all.

Odin had presence, yes, but it was the presence anyone in his seat would have. Not many were the Allfather, got to wield Gungnir and for all practical purposes held your realm’s (and many others’ in fact) future in their hands. Even if they were awful hands.

Frigga though, she was the sun. When she smiled the whole room relaxed and basked in her warmth. When she laughed the openness of the sound echoed throughout the room, infecting all who heard it with its untainted joy. The people didn’t love her by virtue of her being queen. They simply loved her for who she was, even if they mistook her for being simpler than she really was.

You knew, of course, you knew her cleverness, her wit, her sharp mind. Not everyone could do the magic she could, with or without her seidr. You knew this because to you, she wasn’t just a queen, she was a mother.

And nothing they ever said would change that.

You had pushed her away. Because you were are a monster. That is all you could ever be. She didn’t seem to see it though, she kept coming back. Kept coming back and calling you son and telling you that you weren’t a monster. At least not to her.

Lies. You are the stories children scare of, you are the legends warriors dream to tame but you don’t really have that kind of power. Mostly you are just another spoil of war.

The others had already seen what you could be, given power. They had seen and they had been horrified. After all, you had committed crimes worthy of this cell, of much worse than this cell.

As you look around it, you can see the corners which had been warmed by Frigga’s love. The way she never let that fruit bowl be empty, the way there was always a new book to read, the way she demanded the guards leave you alone (in your hatred you had dismissed it as concern for the status of the royal) and the way she accompanied you in silence when you refused to talk.

The fruit, the books, the distance the guards kept, the silence; it was all still here.

But she wasn’t.

She wasn’t here and she wasn’t in the palace and she wasn’t anywhere in Asgard. She was gone. Dead. All because you could not keep your words to yourself. Because you had wanted to hurt Odin and Thor the first chance you got. Because you could not keep still and calm for a single moment.

And before you knew it, the chaos had swallowed her whole.
