Chapter 8
Captain Maynard stayed with Maddie while she changed and Athena went outside to tell Buck who was in his house.
Buck and Christopher were in the car and they were talking and didn't look like they were scared at all and Athena hates that she is going to have to tear Buck's life apart and bring up his past.
"Hey boys you guys OK?" Athena asks as she opens the car door.
"Yeah we're doing OK aren't we buddy?" Buck asks his son.
"Yes we're OK just like papa said" Christopher says.
"I'm glad" Athena says.
"Do we know who she is yet?" Buck asks.
"No we don't, she isn't saying anything and there is no identification to confirm who she is" Athena says lying to her son.
Athena never meant to lie and she doesn't know why she just did but she doesn't want to tell her son who that woman is not until she knows why she is back in her son's life after all these years and to see what she wants because Athena knows Maddie Buckley wants something from him.
"I'm going to head back inside, have you called Helena and Ramon yet?" Athena asks.
"No, I'll do it now," Buck says.
Athena walks back into the house and Maddie is in the living room with a glass of wine in her hand and acting like she owns the place.
"You really have some nerve, don't you miss Buckley?" Athena asks.
"Excuse me," Maddie says.
"You heard me,you break into someone's home and go and take a shower and when the police show up you make yourself a glass of wine and act like you own the place" Athena says.
"And what business is it of yours anyway?" Maddie asks.
"Seriously you're asking me that question" Athena says.
"Look, officer I was given permission to be here and I'm allowed to make myself a glass of wine," Maddie says.
Maddie is getting really sick of this police officer and when her younger brother comes home she is going to make sure he lets her stay with him and he will forgive her for just breaking in as she will tell him some sob story.
"Really please tell me who gave you permission to break into this house?" Athena asks.
"I don't have to answer you," Maddie says.
"Actually Miss Buckley you do so again who gave you permission?" Captain Maynard asks.
"It was my brother who gave me permission," Maddie says.
"And who is your brother?" Captain Maynard asks.
"Even Buckley obviously" Maddie says.
"That's weird because I was under the impression that Evan Diaz lived here with his husband Eddie Diaz and their son Christopher Diaz" Captain Maynard says.
Maddie is shocked she thought her brother lived here and she doesn't know who this Evan Diaz is so did she break into the wrong house just as she is about to say something she sees a picture of her brother and he is standing next to a man with brown hair and a boy with crutches and curly-hair.
Maddie goes over and picks up the picture and shows them.
"This is my brother, the one with a mark on his eye," Maddie says.
"That is Mr Evan Diaz not your brother Evan Buckley if he does exist like you say he does" Athena says.
Captain Maynard looks at her friend and wonders what the hell she is doing and decides to intervene.
"Miss Buckley, how long has it been since you last saw your brother?" Captain Maynard asks.
"A year" Maddie lies.
"Miss Buckley I would be completely honest if I were you?" Captain asks.
"Fine. It's been a while since the last time I saw him, maybe when he was five years old I don't remember" Maddie says.
"So how can you be sure that this guy is your brother?" Captain Maynard asks.
"Look I know it is so you can leave now and I will wait for him" Maddie says.
"Oh you'll be waiting all right but not here, turn around and put your hands behind your back?" Athena said and got her cuffs out.
"Are you serious right now you stupid bitch" Maddie says, getting angry.
Elaine can't believe how fast this escalated but she will be speaking to Athena when they are back at the station and find out why she just lied to the suspect as she has a feeling she lied to Buck as well.
"Maddie Buckley you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions. You have the right to have a lawyer with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you have the right to stop answering at any time" Captain Maynard says.
Athena cuffs Maddie and leads her outside and Buck's back is turned so she is able to just put her in the police car and shut the door.
"I'm going to let them know we are going to the station," Athena says to Elaine.
"I'll do it and when we get back to the station me and you will be having a serious conversation on how this all went down. Do you understand Sergeant Grant?" Captain Maynard asks.
"Yes Captain" Athena says.
Elaine walks over and Buck is still on the phone so she knocks on the window and he pulls it down.
"Yes Helena, me and Chris will be over, look I need to go as Captain Maynard wants to speak to me. Yes I love you too goodbye" Buck says.
"Sorry about that," Buck says.
"It's OK Buck I just wanted to let you know that we are heading back to the station" Elaine says.
"Ok are you guys going to question the stranger there or at least find out her name?" Buck asks.
Elaine had a feeling Athena didn't tell Buck the truth and now she has to lie to him as well. Elaine is not happy with her friend at all.
"Yeah that's what we're going to do plus the woman got nasty so it's better.Look unfortunately you are going to have to stay somewhere else for the next few days as we need to process the scene and investigate I know you understand" Elaine says.
"No worries Elaine, if you need any more information just let me know?" Buck asks.
"I will Buck you drive safe" Elaine says and walks off.
"Ok superman let's head to grandma and grandads" Buck says and he turns on the ignition and heads off to Ramon and Helena's house.
Once Athena and Elaine arrive at the police station and have Maddie booked in and put her in a cell they head to Elaine's office.
"Sit down," Elaine says.
Athena sits down and looks at her friend and she knows this is her boss at the moment.
"Captain, I can explain," Athena says.
"Well that's great I'm so glad that you can explain how you not only lied to Miss Buckley but you also lied to Evan and made me lie to him as well so please tell me your explanation Sergeant Grant" Captain Maynard says scolding her officer.
"When I went to tell Evan the truth I saw how him and Chris were acting they weren't scared or terrified they were happy and I thought how can I blow his world apart and tell him that the sister who hurt him when he was younger is now back and is going to hurt him again" Athena says.
"Athena, I understand that I do. I remember what you told me about Buck's biological family and seeing his sister in the flesh. I don't doubt that she is going to hurt him but he has the right to know and you have only hurt Buck yourself by keeping him in the dark," Elaine says.
"I know it's just the mum part took over that's all" Athena says.
"I get that," Elaine says.
"Look I'm taking myself off the case just so we don't get in trouble" Athena says.
"That's very smart and I guess it makes up for what you did but you know it's going to take a while for me to forgive you" Elaine says.
"I know but what if I gave you some of Bobby's homemade lasagna and 2 bottles of red wine?" Athena asks.
"You're 50% forgiven" Elaine says grinning as Athena knows she loves Bobby's cooking just as much as the man's crew does.
Athena knows not to push her luck and leaves her Captain's office and goes to her desk and thinks about the mess that's just happened and she knows she has to tell her son the truth but is he going to forgive her that's the question.
Buck pulls up to Ramon and Helena's house and they both rush out and greet their son in law and grandson.
"Buck, are you ok, did the person hurt you let me look at you?" Helena asks.
Buck can tell she is in full fuss mode and one look from Ramon says you're not getting away.
"Helena I'm fine I was not hurt" Buck says and he turns around and gets Chris out of his booster seat.
Chris may be seven years old but they need to have a booster seat as it helps with Chris and his Cerebral Palsy and Buck made sure to get the best one for his son.
Chris just clings to Buck and both Ramon and Helena look at him and Buck moths later.
Once Chris is settled in the living room and he is watching TV, Buck goes into the kitchen and he tells them everything from what Miss Flores said to finding out Chris was getting bullied to what just happened an hour ago.
Buck is completely exhausted by the time he finishes telling the story and both Helena and Ramon get up hug the man and tell him that he is doing a great job but kids sometimes don't tell their parents everything but they are glad Chris knows he can always go to Buck or Eddie and they are going to remind Chris that he can always come to them if he doesn't want to go to his dad's.
Buck's phone goes off and he sees Eddie is calling.
"It's Eddie, I'm going to take this outside," Buck says.
Helena gets started on the cooking and Ramon goes and sits with his grandson and they both sit and watch this show called The Tribe.
