too good to be true

It was hard to move on, especially when the accident was fresh in her mind. She could feel her breath go shallow as she remembered how she was accused, could feel tears brim and her mouth go dry as she raised her mask, her arms soon following as she kept her eyes on her father's gun, aimed right at her. She remembered how frightened she was, how scared she'd be if she had to bleed out on the ground soon after staining her reputation, and how scared she was of having to clean up her mess.

The Spider Society was her home now, the only slice of family she found despite knowing Miguel only cared about her as a comrade rather than a daughter. She was so happy, so calm, so..naive. Gwen wished things could go differently, especially since she had you now.

You both met under normal Spider-Man circumstances. Gwen and Pavitr were assigned with making sure that your Canon Event went smoothly, as well as stabilizing the anomaly that found itself in your dimension. She still remembered how you felt, even though you were covered by the fabric of your suit, and how she felt when she saw you crying over your mother's corpse.

It was hard for Gwen to hide her feelings when everything that was happening reminded her of you. "Hey, Gwen? You doin' okay, caught that anomaly yet?" "Oh- uh, no. Miguel replaced me with another Spider-Man. Said it was too dangerous for me, even though I handled Big Bird last time." She tried not to sound dejected, but the last-minute cancellation of her going to the dimension made her feel iffy. Gwen watched as you sighed, sitting down next to her, making her palms go sweaty and her head tingle. "Wanna hang out?" "Yes! I mean, no! I mean-..yeah, that'd be cool, yeah." Pavitr looked at her, shaking his head, and she glares at him before turning back to you.

"You doing okay, Gwendy?" She feels herself go warm at that nickname, placing her hands in her lap as she gives an awkward smile. "Mhm, I'm fine. Why do you ask? Do I..do I not look okay?" "Oh, no! You look nice. Hobie was just worried and asked me to ask you. I was kinda confused, 'cause you tell the dude everything, but.." You go quiet. The only noises are the cars outside and Gwen's tapping. "I like you." She finally breaks the silence, and you turn to look at her, almost breaking your neck in the process. "I love you, but..but it could break your Canon and I-..I don't want to see that. I don't want to see you and your world just..go." "You..like me? Seriously?" You only look at her in bewilderment, and she frowns, wiping her eyes as she tenses. "I do. I really do, but I just couldn't say anything, I couldn't do anything. I was scared, I was scared of..of another thing being ruined a-and.." Her voice grows shaky, a weak smile on her face as she looks at you. Gwen can't help but lean forward, feeling you press a hand against her face and kiss her. She can feel your lips on hers, hand rubbing against her cheek as she lets tears flow down her face, and for a moment it feels like everything is going wrong, until you pull away and look her in her eyes. "I like you, too."
