They know it
She was at the grocery store. She had gone out to buy some grocery’s while he put together a shelf unit they purchased at IKEA the day before. They were trying to make their new house more home-y.
In her hand she held their shopping list where Daniel had written “Cereal”.
She made her way to the cereal isle to find an assortment of different brands and boxes.
She had no clue which to get him. The world “cereal” wasn't very descriptive.
She knew a lot about him, but not his favourite cereal.
She unlocked her phone and called him.
“Which cereal do you want? They have a lot of different ones.” she asked
“Ummm, it’s probably a long shot, but do they have the colourful box that says ‘Trix’?”
Her eyes darted around the isle and them locked on the red box of colourful cereal.
“Yup. You want that one?” she asked.
“Mhm. Was my favourite cereal in the 50’s.”
“I’ll put it in the cart. See you in a bit.”
“Love you, bye.” he said, before hanging up the phone.
It came out so naturally. It felt normal. He didn’t even notice.
She did.
After a couple seconds, her jaw dropped when she has realized what he had just said.
They had never said those little words up until now.
She wasn’t upset at all. She was honestly sad she didn't realize in time, because she wanted to have said it back.
She finished her shopping and headed home.
She walked through the door and found him next to the assembled shelf.
“I love you” She said, as if almost out of breath.
He raises an eyebrow.
“I love you.” She repeated. “You uhm, you said it for the first time- right before hanging up. I didnt say it back.. I-I didn’t even realize it at first.”
He shrugged, “Hm, I didn’t even notice I said it. It slipped out naturally. It just feels so right.”
“It does.” she said softy, putting the bags of groceries down on the ground.
She walked over to him, and he cupped her cheeks in his hands. She wrapped her arms around his back.
“I love you, Daisy Johnson.” he whispered.
“I love you, Daniel Sousa.”
They exchanged a gentle loving kiss.
He loves her.
She loves him.
They love each other…
and they know it.
