Chapter 2
“Hey lady, did you hear anything I said?” the man in front of you spoke as he waved a hand in front of you inches away from your face.
You blink a few times before moving the hand away from your face “Uh could you repeat that” you say with a smile wishing this lunatic dress-up as one of the Spider-Man doesn’t decide to test their made-up abilities on you.
With a heavy sigh he spoke again “Listen lady, I said and ima say it loud so you can hear me clearly, I want four of those weird-looking turtle breads and an iced, quad grande, nonfat, caramel macchiato and a double espresso with 5 pumps of caramel syrup. Also add it to the boss account since I’m one of the Spider-man dudes or whatever” snapping his fingers before talking again “and make it snappy I ain’t got all day gotta save the city and shit”
‘Did this dude just call conchas turtle bread?’ you sighed at the thought, these fake spider-mans think it’s easy to get free shit just cause they dress up as spider-mans.
Since this is the only coffee shop near the Spider Society HQ, many Spider-people often come here. With that in mind, Spider-man 2099 the founder of HQ ultimately decided that all expenses from the spider heroes would ultimately be covered by him. Over time many people like these fools try to get free coffee and treats by dressing up as Spider-Man and saying to add it to the boss' expenses. You always thought if it was smart or foolish because you gotta have a crazy high faith to think you can fool not only the barista but also the real spider-people that come get their coffee.
Plastering a huge smile as you were ready to see shit go down once you ask your favored question to these crazy bufones. This was your favorite part because they either fumble at words or they just say they forgot it at home and leave just to never return. Of course, there were a few times when they decided to argue back but that just ended up in a bad-case scenario as the real Spider-people would stop them in their tracks making them leave at any cost.
“Sure sir, to add it to the boss’ account we need the gizmo, do you have it with you?” your tone came off pleasant but deep down you were laughing as a maniac ready to see what he would try to say or do next. It's just so funny to just not to, tho it wouldn’t mean sometimes you wished they had a backup plan of somehow I mean if anyone about to do a crime might as well do it right no?
“Uh, gizmo? Oh right gizmo, yeah uh?” He fumbled on his words before he spoke again. He didn’t think of a backup plan and it was noticeable.
“Uh yeah, the gizmo right for proof? Well the funny thing you see left it at home so just let me off the hook for today tomorrow I’ll come back with it”
‘So left it at home excuse huh? They can’t come up with a better one or a new one at least’ you thought. With a heavy sigh you responded “Sir, without the gizmo we can’t confirm you're a real spider-man so I will need to ask you to leave and come back with the gizmo to follow with the order.” you anticipated him to leave without an argument after all they were a few real spider people on the back of the line with actual no time to waste since they need to get back to their duty. But instead of leaving he stood his ground and argued back.
“What? Hey lady, just give me the order and I’ll come back with the gizmo thing for proof or whatever just do your job” he disputed back slamming a hand to the counter.
“I’m sorry but I can’t do that without the gizmo, so either pay your order with your cash or show the gizmo for proof that you're an actual Spider-Man.” you hissed back. ‘Great one of those worst-case scenario moments’ you thought. You didn’t want to argue with anyone this early in the morning, especially with a headache you woke up to due to your rain accident a few days ago.
“Fucking bitch” he utters in a low hiss.
“Excuse me?” you answer in an irritated tone. ‘I’m right in front of you asshole '' you thought instead of saying it out loud not wanting to ruin that calm respectful persona image you’ve built around your work area and customers.
“Listen lady, I said I left the gizmo shit at home just do you’re fucking work after all isn’t the customer always right?” he sneered as if he ended the argument with his last saying.
‘You are limiting my patience shit hole’ you smiled not wanting your anger to take over you.
“I’m sorry but as I mentioned earlier without the gizmo I can’t add it to the boss account so please either pay by your own account or leave and come back with it.” you hummed before speaking again “And please remain from making a scene I’m sure you wouldn’t want to catch the attention of the spider people behind you” you whisper the last sentence wanting only him to hear before giving a too polite smile.
To your luck, he most certainly heard the last part as he tensed up but still angrily glared at you.
“Listen here fucking bitch, just do your JOB! ” he shouted the last words as he launched to grab your arm that was on the laptop in front of him.
You waited for him to pull your arm as you closed your eyes but upon lingering a few seconds you were confused. The man's hand was undoubtedly on yours grabbing you harshly but he didn't move an inch.
Finally opening your eyes you examine what lay in front of you. A Spider-man from behind him had grasped him by the shoulder; it didn't look like he had much pressure on him but his face said otherwise. His face while having the mask it’s emotions still showed slightly, his face was filled with nervousness and tension.
“Hey pal’, what's the issue?” the Spider-man behind him spoke. Wearing a radiant pink sleeping coat with his spider suit under it. A baby hung around the baby pouch he was holding.
Upon glimpsing the bright pink sleeping coat and the baby you knew exactly who was behind that spider mask
“Peter !” you whisper yell in relief.
The customer in front of you shifts slightly to see which Spider-Man was stopping him. Upon noticing who was behind him, whichever slight of nervousness he had vanished upon inspecting Peter.
"Oh pal' this clearly isn't a good disguise if you want free treats dude," the man stated with a scoff.
You blink a few times upon realizing what he meant. 'Does he think Peter isn't a real Spiderman?' you presumed while trying to hold your laughter.
"Gotcha on that note,” he commented while pointing finger guns at the man in front of him. “Look kid, how about I just pay for your stuff and you just leave without making a scene, deal?" Peter said with an optimistic tone.
"What" you said with a stunned expression.
The man just chuckles, releasing your hand finally only to grab Peter by the shoulder as he lends towards him. "Dude, you're funny. But sadly this bitch ain't gotta corporate with us fellas but go ahead, be my guest Spider-man" he said as he pushed Peter forward with an evil grin displaying on his face
'This incompetent asshole' you thought as you felt your body heat up with anger. Not only was he being unmannered but also using Peter as his money bag even though Peter suggested first.
"Y/n" was all Peter said as he raised his wrist with the gizmo watch up to you.
You hesitated at first but Peter just gave you an encouraging nod. You proceed to scan the gizmo and went straight to call out on the order. Usually, you would go straight ahead of doing the order yourself if it involved serving the spider people but since this isn't the case you loan the job to someone else. "Your order will be done in a few minutes" you manage to say thru gritted teeth.
The man beside Peter now just gasped at the scene. "Wait, hold up dude how you got one of those?"
"I'm Spiderman, duh" was all Peter said as he webbed the mask off the guy. "Next time bring your gizmo kid" he said as he returned the mask to the pale-colored male. He had a few piercings on his face and dirty blonde hair. He at most looked like he was still in college.
Giving the order to the guy who was still fazed upon seeing that Peter was actually a real Spiderman even though he looked like he just awakened from a nap. Was only able to barely mumble a sorry and quickly scurried out of the cafe.
"You got his face y/n?" Peter said while he ruffled the little red-headed baby in his pouch, Mayday.
"You couldn't just take the mask away rather than paying for the dude's food?" You spoke as you were filling a format to spread the news of the new wannabe spider guy tryna get free meals so your co-workers don't get caught up in the deception.
Peter just chuckled at the comment as he continued to play with Mayday. "It's just a goodbye gift, no biggie," he said as he leaned towards the counter.
You scoffed, Peter did not need to be friendly to that college kid. "Well I hope you can live with yourself upon knowing he called conchas turtle breads"
"What?" Peter gave you a dumbstruck look. " You couldn't tell me before?" He huffed.
It was now your turn of chuckling at his comment. "Where's the boss between" you asked upon noticing O'Hara hadn't come to the cafe with Peter. Again.
"Who? I don't know anyone called boss" Peter said with a humorous tone.
"Mr. O'hara" you bicker back
"Nope don't know who you talkin bout still"
"Big boss?"
"Nopee doesn't ring a bell kid"
"Ugh, fine. Miguel, where's Miguel?" saying with a groan upon giving up. Peter always wanted you to speak about him on first-name terms but how can you not know much about the guy after all he's a pretty important and big guy. Not that he doesn't know you or anything or the contrary y'all talk for a bit but aren't that close either. The last you want is to get on his nerves or for him to think you are unmannered. But to not seem too uptight you decided to nick him big boss.
"Ongoing mission with him," Peter said as he waved his hand around. "He hasn't had his coffee yet so I feel sorry for whoever anomaly he fighting with"
You hissed. 'I feel sorry for whoever he fights with anomaly or not' you thought before speaking again. "So the usual for you and the big bo- I mean Miguel?"
"Yep, and a muffin for Mayday since she kinda dropped hers on the way here" Peter said while patting Mayday's head.
"Alright" you said before you went to package the order. You added Peter's and O'Hara's orders in different bags so it would be easy for the big boss to have his. Adding 2 free conchas (not so free from your paycheck) as a thank you for working hard on the multiverse for O'Hara's order and 2 free muffins for Mayday and Peter.
"This is O'Hara's order, added 2 conchas," you said as you pushed his order towards Peter. "And this yours with 2 free strawberry muffins for Mayday and you" you said as you finalized bagging up Peter's order.
"Conchas and free muffins?" Peter said as he raised an eyebrow while Mayday eagerly try to get her tiny hands to the bag with the muffins.
"Well not so free as it is going to come from my paycheck but something as a little thank you for the hard work" you spoke while giving Mayday a muffin from the display tray.
Peter just chuckled before giving you a pat on the head "Thanks kiddo, welp I'm off to work good luck! Call me if you need anything" he said as he exited through the door, only to disappear when he swung up to one of the towering buildings from Nueva York.
'Anything huh' you thought. You've never really opened up to anyone about your feelings or struggles and you don't plan on it. But hearing somebody have your back conforms you even just a bit. Before you could continue with your thoughts you shake your head slightly upon hearing the next customer on line speak. 'Right work'
-
"Migueeeel, your favorite Spiderman is here!" Peter spoke cheerfully as he entered Miguel's cave entrance where he spent ultimately all his time.
The place was dark and gloomy but immense, up high was a floating platform where Miguel worked quietly and efficiently. Peter waited patiently for Miguel to lower the platform, but upon getting impatient he called Lyla over his watch.
“Lyla tell Miguel I already know he’s there, and also to lower the platform quickly,” Peter huffed.
The ai appeared next to Mayday who was still eating the muffin you gave her, she was sitting in what seemed like an invisible chair as she crossed her legs. “Miggy hasn’t even begun to lower the platform in hopes you don’t notice him” Lyla spoke with a sigh of disappointment.
“So does that mean I get to take your black coffee and the 2 free conchas y/n gave you?” Peter said with an evil grin on his face.
“Welp, thank you boss for the free breakfast, See ya’!” He turned around to leave but upon hearing that the platform was lowering he stopped in his tracks.
“Oh, miggy” was all Lyla said before she giggled at Mayday who was trying to catch her.
Slowly a few feet were left between the ground and the platform, but Miguel just jumped off the platform he landed with a thud that shook Peter a bit and filled Mayday with giggles as she noticed the scene.
“Ugh finally” Peter spoke as he leaned towards Miguel’s right shoulder. “You know dude you gotta make that platform go down faster, I thought Mayday was going to be a teenager by the time you got down here”
“I know right! But you know the grumpy old boss, tryna make a huge entrance and whatnot” Lyla spoke as she glitched to Miguel's other shoulder. Mayday manages to climb out of her baby pouch only to climb into Miguel's arms.
Miguel just sighed “What do you need assistance with Peter?” he spoke as he caught Mayday who had fallen off his head. “And keep watch on your kid, we don't want anyone getting hurt” as he gave Peter Mayday back.
“Yeah yeah, anywho y/n made you your order again and this time with 2 free conchas,” Peter said as he pushed Miguel’s bag toward him. “Well not really free more like from her paycheck but you get the idea, she also asked for you again”
“And what excuse did you give out to her”
“Oh just the same one busy with HQ and whatnot, anomaly field work or something like that I ain’t remember since I had to help y/n with sum kid” Peter said as he gave Mayday another muffin from his bag and shoved a muffin to his mouth to eat one for himself.
“Que?” Miguel raised an eyebrow, “What do you mean?”
“I think the years are getting on to him just like with you miggy” Lyla commented referring to the comment Peter made of not remembering as she filed her nails not bothering to look at either of the men.
“What, Hey I’m not that old” Peter muffled as he still had the muffin shoved to his mouth “I’ll let ya’ know I’m still barely in my late 30’s”
Lyla gave a fake gasp of realization “I thought you were in your late 40s already” as she put a hand over her mouth to fake even more emotion.
“Peter you did not answer my question” Miguel interrupted Peter before he could bicker back to Lyla.
Peter glared at Lyla but didn’t bicker at her furthermore. “Just sum fake spider-kid tryna get free treats and whatnot. Being y/n the smart one she caught him on the lie but the dude really wanted his free treats so he tried going physical but I stop him before he got further on”
Miguel felt anger and fear rise upon him. If only he was there he thought, he would make whoever dared harm you pay but he wanted to keep distance between him and you.
“Is y/n hurt at all?” he finally asked.
“Nah she's all good, kid just managed to grab her wrist nun further” Peter answered as he started to look around for Mayday upon noticing she wasn’t on her baby pouch anymore again.
Miguel let out a sigh of relief. He was content that you were safe but guilt and fear still stayed within him. Turning around in an attempt to return to work he was stopped by Peter’s voice.
“She said it was a thank-you gift for all the work you’ve done so far”
Miguel just hummed at Peter’s comment thinking he would finally leave. He proceeded to walk to the platform and as soon as it barely managed to float a few inches Peter spoke again now with Mayday fast asleep in Peter’s baby pouch.
“You should go see her Miguel” Peter spoke in a serious tone, something it wasn’t common to hear from him.
Miguel turned his head slightly looking at Peter over his shoulder expecting an evil grin on his face but to his dismay he had a sympathetic look. He hated that look, not to a personal degree but to a somewhat extent.
“Peter, I said I won’t inter-”
“Just- just to thank her at least. For the treats of course” Peter interrupted Miguel by saying the same old won’t interfere line.
Miguel hesitated for a moment before he spoke, Peter was right. He hadn’t dared to see you in a while, he hasn’t had sufficient courage to do so as he tried to drown himself with work to forget you or you forget him. But you’ve already seen him, talked to him, and you both exchanged minor conversations between customers not like friends right? It probably meant nothing to you but for him, it meant that was the most he would be able to have with you. If you kept asking for him it must mean the relationship you both have must be like friends. Friends, the word sounds pathetic to him but he cherishes it to an extent. Finally giving up to his selfish desires he will at least thank you personally and apologize for not being much present. Just a friend's thing, he thought.
With a heavy sigh, he nodded in agreement to Peter’s comment. “I will- I’ll deliver my thanks to her for the treats then” finally agreeing.
”Wonderful!” he whispered yelled, not trying to wake up Mayday. Peter’s face now filled with joy, he knew how much you meant to him. “Well since I've been a delivery boy I’ll check up on Jess, see ya big boss” Clasping his hand together as he walked towards the exit.
Miguel chuckled at the nickname Peter called him. It was the nickname you called him when talking with Peter. Most conversations Peter would have with you would be informed to him if he isn’t present. Not that he obligated Peter to inform him, but he didn’t mind for once hearing the babbling of Peter. Opening the bag, he noticed a note. He inspected the note upon reading it he felt his heart melt. “Ay, mi cielo” he managed to say with a faint smile.
‘ Hey, big boss !
Saved conchas for you, straight from the oven
Js a thank you for saving the universes and allat
Good luck with your missions! ‘
Folding the note in half as he planned to save it so he could cherish it later on. Friends he thought again. Friends would be nice, as long as he gets to talk to you and care for you near will sufficient his heart. Friends, nothing more nor less.
