Chapter 3
“Y/n you got a boyfriend right,” one of your co-workers asked.
“Yes” you replied in a lie. You were a bit taken aback by the question considering you haven’t talked to him and because it was irregular when your coworkers asked about your personal life.
“You got any plans with him tonight?” she asked with a hopeful tone. You noticed her eyes sparkle a bit beneath the light of the room.
“What do you want, Yessica” you asked, nearly in a demanding tone.
It was currently your lunch break and as it seemed also for Yessica. Yessica, one of the early recruits to the job, always brought up your boyfriend when she needed something. It was odd in a way but you just used that weirdness to try and figure her out.
She gave an anxious chuckle as you caught up to her plan. “Awh, what do you mean? I’m uh- I’m just asking as a friend you know” she mumbled.
‘So much for going to acting school’ you thought.
“Alsocanyoucoverformyclosingshift” Yess spoke quickly as a nervous smile appeared on her face.
“What?”
“Can you cover my closing shift?” Yess whisper, “Pleaseee”
-
"Ugh, why did I accept" you whine.
"If Yessica drops her closing shift on me one more time I'll strangle her with this mop" you squabble as you furiously mop the dirty floors.
‘Spider-people save the world by doing the dirty work. Fighting with strange villains, leaping from dimensions to drop them off and all. But is it really necessary to bring a souvenir in their shoes from every fight they do?’ you groan at the thought. You appreciated and respected the heroes but you would appreciate a lot more if they cleaned a bit off before entering the cafe.
"Is that fucking slime?" you said as you spotted a green globby thing near the counter on the floor. Furiously adding pressure to the mop to retract the stain of the blob but didn’t budge no matter how much force you added. Instead, it seemed like it was clinging to the mop and spreading more. Letting a frustrating groan out your lips once again, you drop the mop on the floor as you head to the cleaning room to find anything to retract that blob mess.
“Considering many spider people come here a lot, I'm sure they have something for situations like this right, but Oh of course they don't” you grumbled upon just finding more useless rags to clean with.
You let out a breathless sigh as you're about to close the door and proceed to head back to the blob but you stop in your tracks when you see a flashing light fill the room you were before. Bright colorful flashing lights of orange, purple, pink, and blue. It took a minute for your mind to click until you knew where those colors came from.
“Someone open a portal at this time?” you whine as you glance at your watch. You walked to the counter ready to dismiss them “Sorry we’re clo- close?” you manage to mutter the last words as you notice nobody was present.
You blink a few times to make sure your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Furrowing your eyebrows in confusion, you could’ve sworn you saw flashing lights from an opening portal. “Ugh, don’t tell me exhaustion is getting to me” you groan.
You turn around to properly close the cleaning supplies room door but you're stopped in your tracks once again when you hear an excruciating groan behind the counter.
You freeze for a second before you hear it again. You turn around as you slowly head to the noise. Slowly and slightly trembling with fear you peek just around the counter, your eyes soon catch up to a figure knock to the floor.
You feel the air get stuck in your throat as soon as your eyes are laid on the person on the floor. “Shit don't tell me a spider guy is dying in here” you whisper as you rush towards the person on the floor.
“Hey, uh spider hero are you okay” you called out as you negligibly nudged the person on the floor. You notice they have a spider mask on their hand. ‘Why do they have their mask on their hand?’ you thought but before you could think of a reasonable explanation you're startled by the sudden movement of the person on the floor as they try to sit up.
“Lemme help you sit up” was all you say as you try to help them sit up on one of the chairs in the cafe. You can’t help but feel sorry at the simple movement they groan in pain. Once they finally are leaning in the chair you notice a stabbing wound to their side.
Your eyes widen as you examine the injury further. ‘A metal pole’ you cry in thought. You look away from the injury to the person's face, but you're unable to meet their eyes as the cape hoodie they had with them obscures half their face. Just slightly showing their nose and their lips. The person's hands quiver as they crawl to the injury just so slightly.
“I’ll call for help, don't worry” you say with a reassuring tone hoping to ease their anxiety. You stand up to grab your phone on the counter but you're prevented by the person’s bloody glove hands grasping your wrist tightly.
“Just take the pole out” they manage to say with a breathy voice. You noticed it was a woman's voice, even while she mumbled with agony her voice was calm as it brought nostalgia to your ears.
You nod and sit right by her side once again.
“Give me the jacket,” she said as she tugged at your soft jacket.
You give her a doubtful look but still take your jacket off to give it to her. She eagerly takes it off your hands snatching it as she is about to roll it to her mouth but stops as she somehow catches a glimpse at you from under her hoodie.
“To muffle the screams” is all she says before she bites on the jacket. ‘Right, definitely not thinking it was because you're hungry’ you thought.
“Okay, I’ll pull the pole on three, this might hurt” you tell her as you shakily place one of your hands on the pole and another on her body.
She nods in agreement.
You exhale heavily before you speak again. “Okay, uh um one, TWO!” you yell at number two not able to take the tension any longer. Pulling the bloodstained pole out of her body you drop it on the floor. She muffled her screams in agony against your jacket.
“WHAT THE FUCK!” she screams at you as she spits your jacket on the floor.
“I did say it was gonna hurt a bit” you manage to say in an uneasy chuckle as you glance at your jacket on the floor. ‘Yeah, I’m definitely not gonna wear that again’ saying in thought.
“NOT THA- ugh, you said at the count of three” saying in a low growl as in mid-sentence she lowered her voice.
“Sorry,” you say with a sigh. “I’ll get the first aid kit”
You stand up but you're stopped when you notice a glowing green syringe at the corner of your eye. You pause for a moment whether you grab it or not. Eventually deciding it might be dangerous and leaving it alone. Quickly grabbing the first aid kit from under the counter you head to the injured lady to treat her injuries as satisfactorily as possible.
‘You’ve done this before?” the injured lady asked as you placed the first aid kit on the clean table you had so much trouble cleaning away just minutes ago with coffee stains now in a complete mess with sweat and blood.
“I’ve had experience,” you say as you proceed to clean around the wound.
“Of course, you’ve had” she chuckles.
You feel awkward upon her comment. The way she speaks towards you somehow makes your skin crawl but her voice. Her voice brings a familiar nostalgia that confuses your senses. You decide to push those conflicted emotions to the back of your head.
Clearing her throat she manages to catch your attention once again. “What’s your name child”
‘Is she trying to make conversation at this state’ you thought. A ghost smile crept up to you ‘Definitely a spider hero’ you scoff confusing the injured lady as she waited for your response.
“Y/n, and you” you say in a soft tone as you proceed to treat her injury. But upon hearing your name she tenses up. You look up only to meet with an evil grin forming on her lips.
“So you are Y/n L/n, I knew I wasn’t seeing things” she says.
"Huh?" you mumble as your eyes widen at the comment. ‘How does she know my last name?’ you question in thought. You stare at her in disbelief, the uncomfortable feeling comes back. You feel sick to your stomach as fear and confusion fill your body.
She pushes your hand away from her body as she barely somehow manages to stand up fully up in front of you.
"Do you not recognize my voice?" she says in an alarming soft tune.
"What are you talking about" you manage to say in a quivering voice as you stare at her face. “Who- How do you know my full name?”
A wicked grin forms on her face again. One of her hands reached out to her hoodie.
"It's a pity," she says as she fully takes the hoodie off revealing herself.
Your eyes widen, as your throat runs dry. The air now suddenly feels cold against your skin. You feel your palms get sweaty as your heart beats quickly. You're paralyzed with fear and shock. You feel like your senses are at an all-time high yet also everything seems confusing.
"It's a pity you don't recognize the voice of your mother" she says in a malicious tone.
You examine her face closely. In utter disbelief, you want to deny that it's her really but it's impossible considering the fact that she is right in front of your face. At least that's what you think. Upon inspecting her further you notice she looks a lot younger but apart from that her voice, her face, everything implies it is her. Your mother. The same sharp eye stare that pierces into your soul. That same fondly soft delicate tone that you so often wished will say the words you always wanted.
'No, no how did she find me' you thought in terror.
She notices the terrified expression on your face.
"And to think there were other worlds where my daughter is alive" she says as she puts her hands to your shoulders.
Your mind clicks as she says that. A feeling of relief washes down on you as you let out a sigh. 'Right, dimensions'
You've had many conversations with many spider people to know about other alternative dimension worlds.
"I'm not the y/n of your world." you finally manage to say. But anxiety and slight panic linger within you.
"You're in an alternative dimension ma'am, but don't worry ill-"
"Oh, I know where I am" she interrupted you before you could explain further.
"Different dimension or not you're still my daughter" she says as her hands move from gripping your shoulders to resting on top of them.
She says in a soft comforting tone but her face expresses a sinister smile.
You give an awkward chuckle as her eyes stare intensely at you.
"Right, but um I'll call HQ so you get back home safely" you mumble.
Her hands continue to crawl up your neck as you spoke. By the time you notice it's too late. She grabs your throat harshly with her two hands.
"W-what are you d-doing?" you spit the words as she adds more pressure around your throat.
"And just like my daughter you will end" she says in a low hiss.
You struggle to take her hands off your neck. You target her face doing most damage to get her off you but she doesn't react.
You feel your body start going numb, your energy is going low as your eyes threaten to close. Beginning to kick your feet, you manage to hit her right on her open wound with your knee.
She releases her hands as she yelps at the pain. You stay put in the chair as you stare at her figure holding on to her injury. Many emotions swirl within you, baffled, terrified, enraged, and yet at the same time relief.
Once she takes her attention away from her injury she gazes at you with maniac eyes, eyes that are hungry for blood. Hungry for your blood and revenge.
You ready yourself to run away but you only make it a few footsteps before you stumble on something.
Grunting at pain you look at your feet to see a green blob thing next to your twisted ankle.
"Ugh, stupid blob!" You yell.
You try hobbling to the exit but your so-called mother of a different dimension yanks you by the hair.
She brings you closer to her face "Such nauseous," she says "Make it easier just like she did, would you" saying with a sinister chuckle, she throws you to the corner of a wall with full force.
You groan in agony at the sudden impact of the wall, throbbing pain coming from your head making it hard to think clearly.
Hearing her footsteps get painfully louder as closer she gets to you, you lift yourself from the floor, and from the corner of your eye, you see the same bright syringe from earlier.
Without second thought you grab it and point it towards her making her stop in her tracks.
"What do you think you're doing with that?" she says as her eyes narrow at the weapon in your hand. Her evil grin is now replaced with a frown.
"Now honey, leave that alone before you get hurt," she says with a soft tune as she proceeds to walk closer to you slowly.
" The irony, move closer and we'll see what it does" you threaten as the syringe in your hand trembles. You curse yourself at the lack of bravery within you.
"Fine, I won't move but my babies will," she says, dropping her cape as six giant robot metallic arms reveal themselves from within her back.
You feel the air in your throat get stuck as you witness the scene. "Wonderful an alternative Dr. Octopus villain" you spit out.
One of her robotic arms claws at you, scratching both of your hands making you yelp down on the floor with pain. You drop the syringe in the process.
"I thought you said you were my mother," you say as you groan inspecting your arms. Her claws manage to scratch your wrist and forearms. Blood ran out through your injuries, your white shirt was surely not going to make it out and maybe neither will you.
"I am your mother sweetie, this wouldn't be such chaos if you would have cooperated"
You make a run for the syringe again thinking whatever it had inside would give you time until you call for help.
But just as quickly as you move to grab the syringe a robotic claw grips at you. Bringing you closer to your alternative mother. "My, if only you made this easier" she chuckles.
"Think of it as a gift, for concluding this pathetic life once again" she says as she adds pressure to your throat.
You didn't know what to do. Frightens overflowed your entire body. You were terrified but also infuriated at her comment. Angry because you knew she was right about your life, it was pathetic. But you refuse to down upon her. Refused to let her have the upper hand just like your real mother. Without thinking, you inject the glowing liquid from the syringe into her side.
She screams in torment, gripping her face with her nails as she twitches and shudders. You see her body begin to react to whatever substance it had with widened eyes.
"YOU BRAT!" She screams as she falls to the floor trying to grip her body together as she scrunches down deeper into the floor.
Just when you start thinking she will loosen her grip, she screams again. Her grip on you only gains more force. You feel your body break soon. Squirting your eyes together as you try to muffle the pains of agony her grip loses around your body.
You open your eyes thinking you're safe but you're only welcome with shattered glass and another hard surface. You were thrown from one of the windows and smashed into the street lamp post.
Your head becomes light as your vision blurs at the scene upfront. She was squirming in pain, clawing her head close to the floor. Whatever you had injected into her was most definitely doing something.
You're losing touch with your senses as you proceed to lose much blood from the crash. You try your best to move away from the chaos but you're unable to move without groaning in pain.
You feel tiredness and sleepiness crept up to you, trying to overtake your body. Your eyes flutter back to try to stay awake but you feel hopeless. People say they see their life flash before their eyes upon a death experience. Such foolishness they say, and even if it was true it wasn't anything worth seeing again in your life.
You give in by closing your eyes, if you're going to die why fight against it? Just as you close your eyes you manage to hear somebody call out for you. They crouch before you, trying to talk to you but you can't figure out what they are trying to say. Only a few words you manage to make out before you pass out on the street covered in blood.
" STAY AWAKE Y/N PORFAVOR! "
