Walking on Sand
8/3/1936, The Scaling Station, Pacific Ocean
Beemer was covered in chum as the three of them smiled at him, “Quit playing with your food.” Namor said as the three of them went and swam away from him, “He’ll get you two for that.” Bobo had warned of them both, making Namor frown at that, “Beemer’s been a bully my whole life. At least now he has a reason.” Namor said to them as Nammu blew bubbles, bored without Dorma.
“Come on, let’s get out of here.” she told them, making Namor grin, “Let’s go surg.” he offered, all of them loving that thought, “I better check with my dad.” Bobo told them, “He might need help with the new shelter.” he said referring to the additions made in the Summer City, “I thought your new cove was finished?” Nammu had asked as they had headed to the construction.
“Not yet.” Bobo said as they noticed some sort of ink flowing upwards, “Work stopped because of this.” Bobo said as the two of them had looked at the strange ink, “What is it?” Namor asked as Nammu tried to touch it, only for Bobo’s father to approach them with another section, the spitting image of each other if it weren’t for the Lemurian tattoos on his right arm and the builder tools.
“We don’t know.” he had said towards them, “It’s like squid ink, only thicker.” he had told him as the older man spoke, “Taking a break from swimming with sharks?” he had asked, putting the section down and checked his wrapped up arm, “And I thought you were the son with the brains.” he had told Bobo, making sure that it was tight, “I wasn’t really thinking. I just…” Bobo tried to say.
But his father just patted his arms with a smile, “It took guts.” he said with a smile as he had turned to his nephew, “And you, Namor, saved his scales again.” he had said, making him shake his head, “Bobo and Nammu saved the babies.” he had said, “They’re the heroes!” he had said, making Nammu grin, “And don’t you forget it!” she had said before he had gotten up to leave them.
“And heroes need to relax after doing good deeds.” he had told the two, “Let’s head up and go surfing Guys.” he had told them, making the pair give a look, “Nah…” Bobo said, “I’ll float around here. Learn more about Coral weaving” he said, “And I need to contact Dorma.” Nammu said, “See you later.” the two had said as he had decided to go and enjoy himself on his own right now.

The wave were crashing and as they had watched, the gulpers had started to swim forward while he had went and popped up with his own board, “Where’d you come from, bud?” one had asked of him, before he could answer though, the other swam towards the wave, “Look, there’d a big one. I got it.” the brunette had said which Namor was disappointed to see.
“Your friend is too anxious. Never take the first wave.” he had said, remembering when Dorma had been taught to by him, “Huh?” The pinkling had said as they had watch his friend go through, “Always wait for the second wave in a set.” he had said, The Lemurian cousin of Nammu teaching them all how to do it best, “Set?” the blonde had said confused as he had gotten started.
“Now.” Namor had told him, “Now?” the blonde said, “Yeah, let’s go.” he had told him, the two of them taking to the wave and as they had done as much, he could feel as his board had cut through the water like a knife in the tide, Namor staying in the board straight and with ease as the blonde was on his stomach on his board, “Waves come in sets of four or five.” he had told him, showing it with fingers.
“How did you work that out?” the blonde had asked as Namor had looked in the beach, recalling something, “How does it work, the second being the biggest?” the surfer had asked as Namor had noticed a familiar mane of golden hair, “Are you even listening anymore?” he had asked, and Namor wasn’t as he had walked out of the water, plunging the board into the sand, “Where are you going?” he asked.
“Where are you going?” he had asked, but Namor didn’t care, he had headed to the small cove, the wave just hitting as he had seen here there, “Hey!” he had said to the girl, wearing a white dress as she held her shoes, “Remember me?” he had asked, back pedaling as he had stood before her, “I’ve neer forgotten you, Sandy!” he had told her, but she seemed unresponsive, making him curious and confused.
Finally she DID speak up, “I remember you, the kid with the shells.” Sandy had said to him, “Namor.” he had said with a smile before losing it, “It’s been a few years.” he had said towards her, “Yeah. My family came here every summer until I was ten. Then…” Sandy had said as they started to walked by each other, “That makes you what, Sixteen?” he had asked of her.
“Uh–huh. And you?” she had asked of him, hearing that, he answered, “I just turned sixteen too.” he said, if you count five months as ‘just’, “I don’t think sixteen is too old.” she had said, confusing him, but still making him smile, “Too old for what?” he had asked her, which was when she had started to run, “For you to lose another race.” she had said and hearing that he had went and ran after like they were kids once more.

The two of them were in the water now, Sandy hiking up her skirt as she had followed him, “Even after all these years, you still can’t beat a girl in a race.” she had said to him with a smile, the others he had said and hearing that, he had decided to play a trick, ‘ARGHHH!” He had faked, grabbing at his foot as if something had hurt him, “What? What is it?!” she had asked of him in worry as he decided to milk it.
“Owwch! Been… bitten!” he had told her, making Sandy worried, “Let me see! Let me see!” she had shouted out to him, but instead, he had went and dropped his leg, splashing her in the process and making her soaping wet, “Hah hah har!” he had shouted out in joy, loving it, “Why you…” she had went and gotten angry as she had went and pushed him into the water onto his rear, “Hah har!” he laughed.
The two of them were laughing and glaring at each other before they had both relaxed into smiling, the two in the water standing up now, “God, I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.” he had told him, confusing Sandy, “Why not?” she had asked of him, “Oh, it’s my family. We’ve had problems…” he had told her, Byrrah being the worst and how all but Bobo, his mother, Namora, Namorita and the twins were against him.
“Family problems?” Sandy had asked, “I know what that’s like.” she had told him before she had turned towards the shore, “Yeah, well I should be getting back to mine now.” she had said, starting to wade through the waves and back home, but Namor had felt something, “Wait, don’t go yet!” he had said to her, raising a hand as he had remembered when he first saw the human girl.
“I’d always hoped you’d…” he had said, not sure what to say to the girl that had fueled his childhood dreams, “What?” she had asked of him, and hearing that,he had paused, “Nothing. Forget it.” he had said, nervous to speak to her now, “You can’t do that.” she had said, annoyed, “If you start a sentence, you have to finish.” she had said, crossing her arms just like he was doing now.
“Says who?” he had asked, defensive now, “Think you can make me?” he had asked of her, “You bet.” she had snapped at him, making the two of them glare at each other for a bit until Namor had went and smiled towards her, “You would fit right in with the women where I’m from.” he had told her, already thinking of five, maybe six in the future who were just like her.
“Oh, really?” she had said to him, “And where do you come from?” she had asked of him, making Namor rub his chin, trying to think on what to say before he had wen and waded forward, “I’ll show you.” he had told her as he had went and approached her, starting to sink now, confusing her, “Namor, what are you…” she had started to ask before he had vanished.
“…Doing?” she had asked, surprised she had started to look around, “Namor, come on.” she had said towards him, looking around as time went on further and further, “That’s enough. It’s been over three minutes.” she had said, starting to getting worried as he still hadn’t surfaced at that, “Namor?” she had asked him, going and leaping in now to try and find him but there was nothing there.
He was missing, but she had kept looking, only to find that her lungs were burning, in response to that, she had come up, gasping for air, “NAMOR!” She had screamed, worried for the boy until turning, seeing that there was Namor, standing tll and alright, his hair pulled back and revealing his pointed ears, confusing and shocking her, “You… You’re from…” she said, having no words for him.
Seeing how she was reacting, he had taken a breath before speaking, “Atlantis.” he had said and hearing that, she had went and smiled, “Wow.” she had said, and hearing that, he was relieved at the statement, following her as they had went and walked the beach, “You live in the ocean. I guess that;s why you’re so slow on land.” she had said, giggling towards him.
“Oh, yeah?” he had asked of he, “Let’s race in the water then!” he had said and that had made her taken a breath as she had spoken to him, “Maybe next time…” she had told him as he continued to approach, “I really should be getting home.” Sandy had said, turning and seeing that he was so close in front of her now, “Will you come back tomorrow?” he had asked of her.
Hearing that, she had spoken, “I’ll be here.” she told him with a smile, “Good.” he had said, returning it, “See you then.” she had said, he had turned to leave and Sandy had almost went to touch his wrist, making him flinch as he had turned to her, “What?” he had asked her and that was when she had taken her chance, “Tonight… what are you doing?” she had asked of him.
“Drifting with the guys.” Namor had said, unsure about what she was asking, “So you’re busy?” she had asked of him, “It’s only my cousin, Bobo and my friend Nuuma…” he had said in a bit of worry when she had smiled, “There’s this mixer that is going to be happening tonight.” she had told him, “Mixer?” he had asked of her which had gotten her a bit worried at that.
“Kids like us… uh… mixing.” she had said, pointing back and forth between them, “Mixing? With other people?” he had asked her, “Would I be welcome?” he had asked of her, “Yessss.” she had said towards him, convincing herself as well as him, “Meet me here at eight o’clock.” she had told Namor who had looked down at himself, knowing that this wasn’t the right fashion, “I won’t look right.”
She had just smiled back at him, “I’ll bring you clothes.” she had told him, “You can change in our cabana, up there.” she told him, pointing at the building in question, hearing that, he decided that he had no other argument, “Alright.” he had said to her, making her smirk in satisfaction, “At eight then?” she had asked of him, “Meet me back at the rock.” he had told her as she had left.
Sandy had went back to the surface, walking away from him as Namor had watched her before he had went and submerged himself back down into the water, the two of them both going to their own little worlds as Namor had went and swam forward to go and tell the two of them everything that he had seen and done there all on his own and knew that both of them would love it as well.

As he had went and swam towards the city, the two of them saw him, “Namor! Where’ve you been?” Bobo asked, “Yeah! How am I supposed to tattle on you if I don’t know where you are?” Nammu had joked to him, making Namor roll his eyes, “At the surface. Swim with me, guys, I have stuff to tell you…” he had said, telling them everything that he had heard and knew about what he had done on the surface.
“You like her?” Bobo had asked, “yeah.” he had said, making Nammu worried, “Love?” she had asked of him, making him a bit quiet at that, “I mean you only just me!” She said with Bobo nodding at that, “No, we met once before, when we were kids.” Namor had told them both, “Then I must know her.” Bobo said, the cousins beng glued at the hips when they were little.
“Not this girl.” Namor had told him, “Name a single day when you two haven’t played together.” Nammu had told them, “Summer, years ago.” he had said and hearing that, they had both looked at each other, “Uh, I used to go to camp…” he had said to them, “She’s only here during the summer.” Namor said, “Hey! Just like most of us!” Nammu had said as they headed towards his family quarters.
“Why?” Bobo had asked, “Ask her yourself.” he had said as they had went and dived through the open entrance there, “What?” Bobo and Nammu had asked of him, “I’m going to see her tonight. And you two are coming with me.” he had said, going and packing some supplies for them, “Don’t silt my gills.” Nammu said as the two sat and watched him, “Are you kidding?” Bobo had asked.
“No. I’m serious.” Namor had told the two, “Follow up then, are you crazy?” Nammu asked with Bobo nodding at that, “You two got a problem with dry girls?” Namor had asked, “No.” Bobo said, “Just dry boys.” Nammu said, “But then again, we’re not the ones you have to worry about.” Bobo ha told him as he had went and gotten something to deal with the headache known as Beemer, “I’m not worried.”

The trio had went and headed to the market, their boards ready as they had seen him, “Oh, great, there’s my brother and his conchheads.” Bobo had said towards them as they had seen the boys and girls that were fawning over him, “Let’s go before they see us.” he had said as Namor had spoken, rustling through his bag, “Don’t worry, Bobo. Just be ready.” he had said to them.
“For what?” Nammu had asked as Beemer finally noticed them, “Hey, Pink Prince!” he had said, just as Namor threw the squid at him, “Hey, Beemer!” he had shouted to him, tossing it right between his legs, “I brought your date!”he said as the animal latched on, “He likes you!” Namor jeered towards him as Bobo whistled for a pair of sling fish, Nammu throwing the net, “Let’s leave those two alone, shall we, guys?”

The three of them had went as fast as the two could take them before releasing them, the teens getting off their boards as they had all looked towards the sunlight and the air, “What’s this girl’s name?” Bobo had asked for them, “Sandra.” Namor had answered as they both got a bit excited, “What’s she like?” Nammu had asked of him, “Nice… I don’t know, you’ll see.” Namor told them.
“How do you know what she’s REALLY like if she’s all covered up?” Bobo had asked, looking to Nammu in her scaled one piece with a sarong around her waist before she smacked the back of his head, “Don’t, Bobo, I know where you’re going and…” he had started as he had rubbed his head, “C’mon, Namor! You don’t know what she could be hiding under there… I mean Nammu keeps knives.” he said.
“Don’t be dumb.” Nammu had said, scowling at him, “You don’t actually believe those stories about dry girls, do you?” she had asked of him, “I guess there’s only one way to find out for sure.” he had told them, making her still scowl towards him, “She’s coming down with us, right?” he had asked and Nammu had looked at Namor, curious as well at what he had planned.
He had given them both a look at that, confusing the pair, “Tell me you brought a breather for her.” Bobo said as Namor looked to his board which had confused him, “That’s what’s in the bag. Right?” he had asked, making Namor speak, “Sort of.” he had said now, sounding like he was a bit regretful as the coin dropped, “No. You don’t mean–” “I think he does.” Nammu had said, both disliking it.
But he had swam forward and had given them both a grin meant for trouble, “What, you’re scared to go on land?” he had asked the pair of them as Bobo went to readjust his board, “No. I’m not going up there is all.” Bobo had said, “I might, but Bobo get’s lonely.” Nammu had teased, making him stop and glare which Namor had taken advantage of and spoke.
“You don’t want to see if those stupid stories are true?” Namor had asked, “Like the one with the men with three bone claws or the pale skinned man with the Diamond on his head?” Nammu said, “I thought it was a Club?” Namor had said which had annoyed Bobo because he knew that they were both playing him and he was still going to join in despite that.
“All right, just give me the stupid gill scarf.” he had said to his cousin, “I’ll take one too, I might find something Dorma likes.” she said as he had handed them both a Gill Scarf, “Thanks, Bobo, Nuuma.” he had told the pair of them, “Yeah, well… you owe me.” Bobo said as he had tied it around his neck, “There better be something delicious.” Nammu had said as she had done the same.
As the two of them made sure that the Gill Scarfs, a tool developed by Krang for infiltration, had been securely wrapped, the three of them had went and started to swim upwards, all of them spurious and wondering what exactly it was that they were going to be seeing there up on the surface and what had made this Sandy so convincing for him to get the three of them up there.

Namor had been followed by Bobo and Nammu, the cousin undoing his ponytail while the fighter cracked her neck, looking around with caution and curious as the trio saw the blonde human girl approaching, her hair being the color of sun over the water as she approached the three, “Hi.” she said, waving to them as they walked up, “That’s quite a dress.” Namor said and Nammu was in agreement.
“Thank you.” she had said when a wave came, “Ah!” she yelped, her shoes covered in seawater now, “You’re all wet!” the two boys said in unison, annoying Nammu who smacked the back of both their heads, “Apologies, they’re both idiots.” Nammu said to her, making Sandra smile to the other girl, “May I ask, how do you all know each other?” She asked as they headed to the boardwalk.
“We’re cousins and best buddies.” Bobo had said, “And I’m a Sar, my mistress decided she likes them and wants me to make sure they don’t get into too trouble.” she had said, making Sandra surprised a bit, “He talks about you a lot, and a girl named Dorma.” Sandra had said, “Oh, yeah?” Bobo had asked as they bot looked at him with equally mischievous grins.
“I told her about the time you wrestled that shark while Nammu saved the babies.” he had said as Sandra had went and checked his arm for any wounds, “Where are the scars?” she had asked, pointing at the unblemished limb, “They’re all on the shark.” he had told her before they saw a small pool to relax in, Bobo jumping in while Nammu put her feet in, shocking Sandra at the color change.
“Your skin is… it’s turning blue!” she had said, making the two look in confusion, “So?” they asked in unison, “So… nothing.” she had said, embarrassed and curious now as Bobo explained while she sat next to Nammu, “Atlanteans have blue skin. Everybody knows that.” he said, “But it was just normal.” she said, “Normal?” Nammu asked, confused, “Your skin was white.” she clarified.
“White?” Bobo asked, the two teasing in unison now, “Skin color.” she said, making both laugh, “Uh–huh. This could go on all night.” Bobo said to her, making her laugh, “It could, but I’d have to kill you.” Sandra joked, making Nammy smile as Bobo got out, “Our skin is blue in water and like this on land with a scarf. Everybody knows that.” Bobo said as he returned to Caucasian.” he said, “Hm.” Sandra said.
“So…” she said, “Soooo?” they asked in unison as she leaned in to whisper, “So, if Namor is Atlantean, why isn’t he blue?” she had asked them, “Ask him.” Bobo said, “I can’t.” Sandra said, “Sure you can.” Nammu said before turning to Namor, “Namor, are all your friend as pretty and pink as you?” he asked, making Sandra speak, “Why is your skin a different color?” she clarified, making Namor moody, “It doesn’t matter.” he said.
“But why are you different?” she had asked, making him push hard to destroy the chair, “I’m not different!” he shouted, shocking her, “Doesn’t know his own strength.” Bobo said as they had watched him storm off, “But besides the temper, he’s a great friend to have.” Nammu said towards her and Sandra had looked with a little surprise before going to get him ready for the party.
