kidnapping is such an outdated term
August - September, 2012
Over the next few days, Peter started working on a plan to get Bucky out of HYDRA’s grasp but it was slow going. He started preparing his house for a recovering Winter Soldier and gathering everything they would need for the man’s transition out of the nazi terrorist organization.
He’d had Karen start hacking into both the S.H.I.E.L.D and HYDRA databases pretty early after their arrival but she had to be extremely careful to avoid detection so it had taken her a few months before he had the information he needed.
He still needed to scope out each location he’d gotten, not knowing for certain which one he’d been held at. Though, he had a pretty good idea of where the man was. He shivered slightly at the idea of going back there.
Most of his mind had been busy worrying about how to remove the trigger words before he realized that Pepper had been sure to pack everything he could possibly need.
He mentally thanked Pepper for the BARF glasses (problem solved) and got started on a prototype for a new arm, based off of one of Tony’s old designs.
But Peter didn’t have Vibranium or the ability to synthesize Badassium so he’d had to improvise on a few parts.
He’d also found a trustworthy team of psychiatrists and therapists to help them with the transition, or rather, help Barnes in general.
They’d planned to go to the first in the next few days but before they could go through with their planning, it was briefly interrupted.
A familiar portal appeared in his living room, interrupting the trios planning and Peter couldn’t help his groan as an unfamiliar person in yellow robes stepped through.
Peter stood warily, watching the person thoroughly as she walked calmly through the portal.
Before either of them could speak, ‘Mer did. “Oh Vishanti! The Ancient One, it’s an honor to meet you, ma’am!” She said, standing abruptly and bowing low.
“And you as well, America Chavez.” The sorcerer greeted, lips twitching.
“I hope you’re not expecting me to bow to you, Miss…?” Peter drawled.
“No. Mr. Parker. As it is, bowing before the Sorcerer Supreme is a custom that had fallen out of practice over the centuries. You may call me The Ancient or Tao, if you prefer.” The bald woman in his living room answered calmly.
Peter raised an eyebrow, reluctantly impressed as he reevaluated the woman. “Ah.” He said understandingly. “Strange’s predecessor.”
“Indeed.” Tao said nodding as she watched him back with equally careful eyes.
“Why are you here?” He asked warily.
“Do not fret, Peter Parker-“ “It’s Mayson.” “I am only here to ask one thing. Leave Stephen Strange alone, his journey is his own and it must not be interfered with under any circumstances.”
Peter scoffed. “Yeah no problem. I don’t want to see that asshole any sooner than I have to, anyway.” He answered, still feeling slightly bitter about their last interaction.
“Hey!” America protested the name calling, flushing when Peter cocked a brow at her.
“And you, Master Chavez-“ Tao spoke again, affectionately looking to the young girl. “are welcome to visit Kamar Taj whenever the desire strikes, if you so wish.”
“Really?” America breathed, wide eyed. She looked up at the bald woman with thankful eyes, clutching the collar of the Cloak of Levitation as it fidgeted. “Thank you, Ancient One.” She said, bowing again.
“Please, there is no need for that.” Tao waved her off, a secret smile on her lips before she turned back to Peter. “Be very careful, Mr. Mayson. Across every universe, there are fixed points in time. You are very likely messing with things you do not fully understand.” She said with gravity.
Peter rolled his eyes at the warning he’d already heard from one Sorcerer Supreme but nodded, not relaxing until the woman stepped back through the portal without a backwards glance.
When the portal closed behind her, Peter slumped and ran his fingers through his curly hair. “Karen, start a file on ‘The Ancient One’, please.” He requested on a sigh.
“Done, Boss.” Karen’s reply echoed from the speakers he’d installed throughout the house. He sent a quick smile at one of the cameras before looking back at the other two occupants.
“I can’t believe I just met The Ancient One!” America squealed, bouncing excitedly. “And she personally invited me to Kamar Taj! That was sick!”
“Yes well, I’m glad you’re excited about that but I was really hoping we wouldn’t have to deal with the wizards until we need to get the Time Stone.” Peter replied truthfully, biting his lip.
“It didn’t seem like she wanted to deal with you either.” Wade shrugged, earning Peter a slightly offended look. “What? She didn’t! Just wanted to warn you off her future protégé.”
Peter huffed but nodded. “I suppose you’re right.”
“Of course I’m right, babyboy! I am always right.” Wade chirped, snuggling up to his side.
“Yeah no.” Peter shook his head with a laugh. “I’m not touching that delusion with a ten foot pole. And anyway, we should get back to the topic at hand. We’ve agreed to try the Siberian base first as it’s the most likely option, right?”
“Right-o Petey Pie!” Wade cheered, looking excited about their upcoming mission.
“Are you able to portal us there?” Peter asked his faux sister.
Shaking her head slowly, she spoke. “I’d have to see it first.”
Peter huffed and went silent for a few moments before an idea hit him. “What if I could show you?” He questioned, thoughts already running away from him.
America shrugged but nodded. “It could work.”
“Alright then I guess I better get ready to BARF.” Peter said with little hesitation.
Wade surged away from Peter’s side, waving his hands wildly. “I’ll get a bucket! Try to hold it in, Spidey!”
Peter was confused as the words registered and then he barked out a laugh. “Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing, B.A.R.F..” He repeated.
Wades eyes light up while America frowned. “That’s a terrible acronym.” She said, lips pursed.
Peter waved a dismissive hand. “Blame Tony, not me.”
After confirming that America could indeed portal to the base after witnessing Peter’s memory of rescuing Tony with Vision in 2016, they ironed out the rest of the details.
“Okay so ‘Mer, you’re only there for transport. I want you to stay out of sight while Deadpool and I clear out the base.” He paused, shooting Wade a sharp look. “In a stealthy manner. We don’t want too many people sniffing around because we caused some sort of explosion.”
“Awwwww.” Wade whined, pouting.
Another sharp glare. “I’m letting you kill nazis, you should be thankful.” He said, rolling his eyes.
“Thank you, Master.” Wade said sincerely.
“No.” Peter spat, pointing a firm finger in his direction. His face scrunched in disgust and he shook his head, trying to ignore the comment.
“Once we’ve cleared the base, America will portal all of us back here, to the basement.”
“With our very own super soldier popsicle!” Wade cheered.
Peter rolled his eyes again but nodded in agreement. “Everything after that depends on what condition he’s in so I guess that’s all we can plan for, for now. I’ve already had a secure room built into the basement where we can defrost him.”
“Go team!” Wade yelled, America joining in his cheers.
“Fuck. Thank God Bucky already told me about his trigger words and explained how he got defrosted, otherwise we’d be screwed.” Peter muttered.
“Hey! Stay positive, okay? We’re finally doing things!” America said, smiling slightly as the Cloak nodded its vehement agreement next to her.
“Yeah. Yeah, I know.” Peter acknowledged tiredly. Fuck, this was going to be a long month. This is his karma for complaining, albeit in his own mind, about being bored.
He had a feeling things were about to get a whole lot more interesting.
It was a late Saturday night when they’d finally hatched their rescue (kidnapping?) plan.
He’d had Karen hack into the cameras to that specific base the night before after briefly scouting the base from the outside and had confirmed that Barnes was being kept there.
Thankfully, there only seemed to be minimal personnel at that base, about a dozen agents as well as two doctors and a scientist.
When they’d finally portalled into the freezing cold of the Siberian forest that surrounded the base.
America was staying behind in the woods until Peter contacted her through the bastardized comm system he’d created from some of Tony’s designs once they’d cleared the base and taken care of all hostiles.
“Stay out of sight.” He warned the teen. “If shit blows up, leave.”
She looked like she wanted to protest but nodded reluctantly after he’d promised he’d be careful.
Peter was also enjoying the opportunity to test out the new stealth suit he had made. It was based off of the first suit Tony had made for him but was a matte black color from head to toe.
He’d removed his web shooters, replacing him with his favorite set of knives. He couldn’t afford for Spider-Man to be connected to this.
Wade was still in his standard suit and seemed to be practically vibrating in excitement. “Doesn’t really look like much.” He said, surveying the tiny looking building.
“I think that’s the point.” Peter muttered back. He tilted his head. “Only four guards walking around the perimeter, should be pretty easy.” He reported.
He moved with feline grace as him and Wade started towards the base, Karen activating the thermal and X-ray vision he’d installed in this particular suit.
After subduing the guards walking around the grounds quietly, Peter began detailing what he saw. “It looks like it’s a pretty small facility, five levels, that reach underground. Barnes is on the bottom, and there are three more heat signatures down there. One on each of the third and fourth floors. Six more hostiles on the second level and eight on the top. I think we should work our way down.”
“You got it Spidey!” Wade chirped, skipping forward and hopping on Peters back so that he could carry him to the roof.
“K, start looping the cameras. I don’t want a single shot of us in this place.” Peter ordered quietly as he stuck to the side of the building and began climbing.
“On it, Spider-Man.” Karen reported dutifully.
“Let me know if anyone notices anything.” He asked, letting Wade off of his back and moving towards the door.
He quickly pulled out a small spider shaped bot, setting him on the electro-magnetic lock. It only took a few seconds before there was a green light and the door clicked open. Recollecting the bot, they made their way through the halls soundlessly.
Moving through the halls, they quickly took out anyone they came across. It was almost too easy, the agents put up a good fight but when it came down for it they were no match for Peter’s enhanced strength and Wade’s chaotic fighting style. Or his katanas.
“It appears they’ve been alerted of your presence.” Karen spoke softly.
“Fuck.” Peter hissed, knocking out the
Before they knew it they’d made their way down to the final level. Arguably the hardest, which was strange since there were only three agents in there. Apparently they’d put their most experienced and dangerous on popsicle duty, which made sense of course. Peter only sighed at the slight inconvenience before incapacitating the one he was fighting while Wade rather violently maimed the other two.
Once it was clear they both let out matching sighs and turned towards the cryofreeze chamber.
He leaned forward and inspected it, affirming that it was Bucky in there and not one of the other Winter Soldiers. Once he’d made sure he told Karen to tell America their status.
While they waited he moved towards the computers set up down there and released the Spyder again. “Karen, download everything you can get your artificial hands on without alerting anyone.”
“On it, Boss.”
Once America had arrived, clad in her own stealth suit and opened a portal to the basement of their house, Peter moved to the tank. Using most of his strength, he lifted it, wincing slightly, before walking through the portal into the room he’d prepared.
He ignored Wades loud whisper of “Hot damn!” as he carefully set it down.
Moving back through the portal he quickly collected the bot and nodded towards the portal, “Come on, ‘Mer.” He called before looking back at Wade. “We’ll pick you up in an hour, have fun. Call me if you need anything.”
“Aw you’re so sweet, babyboy! I love you!” Wade called after them, blowing a kiss.
“Yeah yeah.” He waved his friend off, watching the portal close, Deadpool’s cackles echoing through the air.
He shivered slightly, from the cold or disturbance was anyone’s guess.
He turned to look at Barnes thoughtfully, running through his plans with care.
“So what now?” America asked excitedly, also looking at the frozen man.
Peter huffed. Now, wasn’t that the question.
It took another week to wake the man up. Before he woke fully, Peter made sure to remove the abomination HYDRA had installed and called an arm. It was as much for their own safety and Bucky’s own personal comfort.
He wouldn’t be able to replace the limb with the one he’d built until Barnes was conscious and of sound-ish mind. They might have kidnapped the man but they weren’t monsters. And it was kidnapping for a good cause, so.
It was all much more anticlimactic than he’d expected. He heard the man’s breathing in heart pick up but his face didn’t change and he didn’t move. Opening his eyes, he only stared blankly forward. Fuck, they must have wiped his mind recently. Too recently.
Peter wanted to cringe away from the vacant expression on his face, something he’d never seen before on the man he’d considered a friend in his universe.
“Hey, there.” He said warily, watching for any reaction. He received nothing but a single blink. “Anyone in there? Sargent Barnes?” Peter called. Yup. Nothing.
“Fuck I really didn’t want to do this.” He mumbled, shifting uncomfortably. “Желание.” He started. A small twitch. “Ржавый. Семнадцать. Рассвет.” He paused for a second when Barnes flinched back. “Печь. Девять.” Now he was shaking. “Добросердечный. Возвращение на Родину. Один.” And finally. “Товарный вагон”
The man went completely still, his face losing any tension or emotion within a blink. “Готов соблюдать.” He spoke tonelessly, russian accent thick.
Peter cleared his throat and stowed away his nerves. They wouldn’t be useful here. “Your name is James Buchanan Barnes and you were born on March 10th, 1917. You had a sister named Rebecca Barnes and You were a Sargent in the United States Military under the 107th infantry-“ His words were clear and loud but he faltered when Bucky started twitching slightly, hand clenching into a fist. “You were on a mission when you fell off of a train and you were captured by HYDRA and experimented on. You’re safe now.”
Barnes’ eyes clouded with confusion before blanking again. “Цель миссии
.” He questioned and Peter thanked the deities that he was already pretty fluent in the language.
“Clean yourself, get nourishment, and rest.” Peter answered, clinically, warily. “I have a room prepared for you down here, and I’ll bring you something light to eat.”
The man nodded sharply, allowing himself to be led to the secure room he’d had constructed away from his lab space a few months ago. Normally it would serve as a room for Peter to crash in whenever he was having a lab binge but it would work for these circumstances.
It wouldn’t hold him if he truly decided to leave but he wouldn’t be able to get out of the basement without Karen being alerted and taking defensive measures. Hopefully.
He’d stocked the room with some history books with a few other genres sprinkled through and a few magazines about Captain America and the Avengers.
He’d already compiled a tablet (thanks Karen) with all the information the man could ever need but decided to hold onto it until Barnes could form actual thoughts instead of the blank numbness currently eating at his mind.
After showing him the bathroom and some clothes he could change into, Peter quickly made his way back into his lab area, locking the door from the outside.
Slumping into a chair and running a hand through his hair, he groaned. “What the fuck am I doing?” He mumbled.
“Saving the world, Petey.” Wade sang from beside him causing Peter to almost jump onto the ceiling.
“Jesus, Wade. What are you doing down here? And why didn’t you warn me, Karen?” Peter griped.
“I tried, Boss.” Karen said, staring at him through the unimpressed eyes of her hologram.
“Oh.” Peter winced. “Sorry Kare-bear.” He apologized, scratching at the back of his neck.
“It’s okay, Peter.” Karen said warmly, disappearing with a wave.
“Why’d you make your AI so damn cute!” Wade squealed, looking at where the hologram had been.
“Thank you, Mr. Wilson.” Karen’s voice spoke before Peter could make a retort.
Peter rolled his eyes and waved a hand at the ceiling. “She chose her own appearance, I just gave her the ability to do that.”
“Ah.” Wade hummed in understanding. “I brought soup for the soldier.” He said, presenting the bowl proudly.
“Thank you.” Peter murmured softly.
After slipping the meal into the room while Barnes was in the shower, Wade moved closer and started leaning to look over Peter’s shoulder at his tabletop. “So what are we working on?” He asked.
Peter couldn’t help his grin. “Well-“
