I really need to read the briefings
Well, I never thought this is what would come of one conversation with Stark. I tell myself as I’m going to my first mission briefing. Well, it’s not really a briefing, more of a see-who-actually-gets-the-mission type thing. Since escaping Hydra, I’ve now become a shield agent and have been training relentlessly. And when I’m not training, I’m reading, doing all I can to make up for lost time. A pointless battle, I know. Reading is actually quite fun, for the most part. There’s just something about getting lost in the pages, imagining every word, letting every scene come to life.
I walk into the large room we’ve been summoned to. It looks to be one of the training rooms, although I’m not sure, I haven’t been in this part of the building yet. Nick Fury stands near the front of the room talking to a tall (and pretty buff) man. As me and about five other agents – all of whose names I don’t know – line up in front of them, the conversation between the two men ceases.
“Alright, as I’m sure you all know from the briefing you were sent,” Fury starts, Shit, I didn’t read the briefing, “All of you were selected to be a candidate for this mission for various reasons, as it is a strictly diplomatic mission.” There’s a couple of grumbles in the line from those who would much rather go on a certain death mission, than diplomatic.
“Now, I will not be the one choosing who goes on this mission. My friend Thor here will be doing that honor.” There’s no way. As of late, I’ve been saying that a lot. I slowly raise my hand.
“Yes Agent?”
“Thor as in Norse god of thunder, Thor? That Thor?” I quirk my eyebrow and look between the man who is - supposedly - Thor, and Fury.
“Yes, that Thor.” Oh. I honestly have no idea what to make of that, so I fall back into formation. Thor keeps staring at me. You’re not my type buddy. I’m not entirely sure if that’s how he’s looking at me, but the only other explanation would be intrigue, which doesn’t apply to me because I’m not interesting.
After a few minutes of Fury rambling on more and then talking to Thor quietly again, Thor steps forward this time.
“I have made my decision as to who will accompany me back to Asgard,” Wait, Asgard? I really need to start reading the briefings. I think I’m just as surprised as everyone else when he walks over to me and says, “I think you will do nicely Agent…?”
“Carter! Agent Iris Carter sir.” I rush to finish for him as I stick my hand out to shake his and instead, he gently grabs my hand and kisses the back of it.
“Pleasure to work with you Lady Iris.”
“I assure you; the pleasure is all mine.”
