Chapter 5
Peter pulled Gwen up slowly and gently, breathing a sigh of relief that he had managed to catch her.
“Spider-powers, I love you,” he quipped as he pulled her up. “Not only am I the most dashing hero on two legs, I'm easily the most versatile. Who else could save a falling girl from certain-”
Peter’s voice trailed off as he felt Gwen’s lifeless body in his arms. Shocked and horrified, he wrapped his arms around her as gently as possible.
“Gwen? What’s wrong? Don’t you understand? I saved you! You can’t be…no… Oh no, no, no! Don’t be dead, Gwen! I need you to not be dead! I saved you, honey! Don’tyou see I saved you?!”
“You romantic fool!” The Goblin cackled as he circled the top of the bridge. “She was dead before your webbing ever reached her. She was dead the moment you entered her life! But, Peter old boy, I can assure you your death will come much more quickly and surely than the snap of a sudden stop!”
“Wrong, Goblin!” Peter hissed, cradling Gwen’s corpse in his arms. “You killed the woman I love…and for that, you’re going to DIE!”
The Goblin chuckled as he heard the sound of police sirens approaching. “I’ll hold you to that, Spider-Man!” he laughed as he flew away from the scene of the crime.
Peter sat, sobbing for what felt like forever until he finally heard the sound of car doors slamming beneath him. With a heavy heart, he picked Gwen up and gently carried her down the side of the bridge, taking extra care not to damage her body.
“Oh my goodness,” Officer Dewolfe gasped as he reached the ground. “That’s Captain Stacy’s daughter.”
“What happened to her?” Officer Carter asked as Spider-Man laid her down on the hood of their car. “Spidey? What will we tell the others?”
Spider-Man turned around as he walked to the edge of the bridge, his shoulders falling as he turned back to face them.
“Tell them Spider-Man killed her.”
WIth that, he leapt off the bridge, swinging away across the New York skyline.
