Chapter 1
The future Duchess of Dragonstone, Rhaenyra Targaryen, stood at the top of the grand staircase, watching as the guests arrived for the first ball of the engagement season. Her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Dragonstone, stood by her side, eagerly scanning the crowd for eligible suitors. Rhaenyra's mother, a stern and practical woman, had her sights set on one particular lady, Lady Alicent Hightower.
Lady Alicent was a striking woman with a sharp wit and a tongue to match. Rhaenyra had met her before and found her to be rather irritating, but she couldn't deny the tension that simmered between them. Every time they spoke, they seemed to clash, but there was an undercurrent of something else, something that made Rhaenyra's heart beat a little faster.
As the guests mingled and chatted, Rhaenyra's parents were quick to introduce her to every eligible omegas in the room. But Rhaenyra found herself getting increasingly bored with the usual small talk and polite compliments. She couldn't help but keep an eye on Lady Alicent, who was holding court with a group of admirers.
Finally, Rhaenyra's mother ushered her towards Lady Alicent, introducing the two women with a forced smile. Rhaenyra tried to keep the conversation polite, but Lady Alicent had a way of cutting through the pleasantries and getting straight to the point.
"So, Lady Rhaenyra," she said, her voice low and teasing. "I hear your parents have their hearts set on finding you a suitable match this season. Any preferences?"
Rhaenyra tried not to roll her eyes. "I don't think I have much of a say in the matter, Lady Alicent. My parents seem to have already made up their minds."
Lady Alicent smirked. "Well, if it's any consolation, my parents are doing the same thing. It's quite tiresome, isn't it?"
Rhaenyra couldn't help but laugh at that. "Indeed it is. But I suppose we must suffer through it for the sake of duty."
Lady Alicent nodded, her eyes sparkling. "Ah, duty. The bane of our existence."
As the music started up, Rhaenyra's mother took her arm, eager to start the dancing. But before they could make their way onto the dance floor, Rhaenyra caught Lady Alicent's eye.
"Would you care to dance, Lady Alicent?" she asked, surprised at herself for the sudden invitation.
Lady Alicent's smile widened. "I would be delighted, Lady Rhaenyra."
As they stepped onto the dance floor, Rhaenyra couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement. She wasn't sure where this tension between them was leading, but she was eager to find out.
As they began to dance, Rhaenyra and Alicent fell into an easy rhythm. Their bodies moved together, and Rhaenyra found herself feeling more alive than she had in a long time.
"You're a good dancer, Lady Alicent," Rhaenyra said, surprised at the compliment coming from her lips.
Lady Alicent smiled. "Thank you, Lady Rhaenyra. I'm glad you approve."
They danced in silence for a moment, the tension between them growing more palpable with every step. Rhaenyra felt herself getting lost in the moment, and she didn't want it to end.
"So, Lady Rhaenyra," Lady Alicent said, breaking the silence. "What do you think of our society's obsession with marriage?"
Rhaenyra was taken aback by the question but decided to answer honestly. "I think it's rather stifling, to be honest. It's as if our worth as women is tied entirely to our ability to secure a suitable match."
Lady Alicent nodded. "I couldn't agree more. It's ridiculous that we have to spend an entire season pretending to be interested in alphas that I hardly know just to satisfy my parents' ambitions."
Rhaenyra laughed. "You're certainly not afraid to speak your mind, Lady Alicent."
Lady Alicent shrugged. "Life's too short to waste on polite conversation."
As the dance came to an end, Rhaenyra felt a sense of disappointment wash over her. She didn't want their conversation to end.
"Thank you for the dance, Lady Alicent," she said, hoping her voice didn't betray her feelings.
"Thank you for asking me, Lady Rhaenyra," Lady Alicent said with a small smile.
As they parted ways, Rhaenyra found herself unable to shake the feeling that something had shifted between them. She wasn't sure what it was, but she knew that she wanted to explore it further.
As Rhaenyra left the ball, she couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration and respect for Alicent. Despite her disappointment, she knew that their encounter had been a valuable one, and she couldn't wait to see what the future held for her.
Rhaenyra found herself getting lost in Lady Alicent's piercing green eyes during their dance. They seemed to hold a depth of knowledge and experience that Rhaenyra couldn't help but be drawn to. Their bodies moved together in perfect harmony, and Rhaenyra felt a sense of electricity between them that she had never felt before.
As they danced, Rhaenyra found herself becoming more and more captivated by Lady Alicent's effortless grace and intelligence. She couldn't believe that she had never realized how extraordinary Lady Alicent truly was.
When the dance came to an end, Rhaenyra felt a sense of disappointment wash over her. She wanted to keep talking to Lady Alicent, to learn more about her and to continue feeling the connection that had been building between them.
///
The next day, Rhaenyra was determined to take the next step with Lady Alicent. Her heart was still fluttering from the dance they shared at the ball, and she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special between them.
Rhaenyra dressed in her finest attire and took a carriage to the Hightower residence. As she waited for Lady Alicent to join her, she couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness.
"Lady Alicent, I was wondering if you would be interested in taking a chaperoned walk with me around the town gardens today?" Rhaenyra asked, her heart pounding in her chest.
Alicent looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "I'm sorry, Lady Rhaenyra, but I must decline your invitation."
Rhaenyra's heart sank. She had hoped that their dance last night had been a sign that Alicent was interested in her too. "May I ask why, Lady Alicent?"
"I don't think it would be appropriate for us to be seen together in such a public place," Alicent replied, her voice firm.
Rhaenyra was confused. "But we danced together last night in front of everyone. Why is a walk in the gardens any different?"
Alicent sighed. "Lady Rhaenyra, I'm not sure that we're on the same page here. While I enjoyed our dance last night, I don't think that we are a suitable match for each other."
Rhaenyra felt a wave of disappointment wash over her. "I don't understand. We seemed to be getting along so well."
Alicent shook her head. "I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, Lady Rhaenyra, but I don't think that we have the same goals in life. I value my independence, and I don't want to be tied down in a marriage to a alpha."
Rhaenyra was taken aback. She had never heard anyone speak so openly about their desires before. "I see. I didn't realize that was what you wanted."
Alicent smiled kindly. "I'm sorry if I've disappointed you, Lady Rhaenyra. I hope we can still be friends."
Rhaenyra nodded, feeling a mix of emotions. She had been rejected, but she couldn't deny that she admired Alicent's bravery and honesty. "Of course, Lady Alicent. I understand."
As Rhaenyra left, Alicent watched her go with a heavy heart. She couldn't deny the connection that had formed between them during their dance, but she also knew that she couldn't afford to pursue it any further.
Alicent had always been an independent woman, with her own dreams and aspirations. She knew that if she allowed herself to be courted by Rhaenyra, her father would use it as a way to further his own ambitions for the Hightower family. He was obsessed with their family's status and was always looking for ways to climb higher in society.
Alicent couldn't bear the thought of being trapped in a loveless marriage, forced to give up her own dreams and ambitions for the sake of her family's social standing. But at the same time, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special between her and Rhaenyra.
She paced back and forth in her room, her thoughts racing as she tried to make sense of her conflicting emotions. She wanted to be free to live her life on her own terms, but she also couldn't deny the pull she felt towards Rhaenyra.
In the end, Alicent knew that she had to do what was best for herself. She couldn't allow herself to be drawn into Rhaenyra's courtship, no matter how much she might want to. She was a Hightower, and she had to live up to her family's expectations, no matter the cost.
///
The ballroom was a dazzling display of opulence, with shimmering chandeliers casting a warm glow over the elegant crowd that filled the space. The air was filled with the soft strains of classical music, played by a live orchestra stationed on a small stage at one end of the room.
In the center of it all stood Duchess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the most sought-after prospect of the season. She was resplendent in a gown of deep emerald green, her dark hair piled high on her head in an intricate coiffure. Her beauty was the talk of the ball, and every eligible suitor in attendance was vying for her attention.
But Rhaenyra's family had other plans for her. Her father, the Duke, was gravely ill, and it was a closely guarded secret that only those closest to the family knew. Rhaenyra's family needed her to marry and have an heir as soon as possible, to secure their position and ensure their legacy.
As the night wore on, Rhaenyra was forced to start speaking with other prospective wives, much to her chagrin. She longed to be able to choose her own mate, to marry for love rather than duty, but she knew that was not an option for her.
Alicent watched as Rhaenyra conversed with Lady Laena of Driftmark and Lady Margaery of Tyrell, her heart heavy with jealousy. She couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as she realized that Rhaenyra was no longer exclusively focused on her.
But as much as she wanted to look away and avoid the sight, Alicent knew that she had to keep her composure. It was unbecoming of a lady to show her emotions so openly, and she couldn't afford to be seen as anything less than poised and graceful.
So she forced herself to watch as Rhaenyra continued to speak with the other prospective wives, her smile never faltering as she charmed them with her wit and intelligence. Alicent couldn't help but feel a twinge of admiration for the way Rhaenyra held herself, even as her own heart was breaking.
But for now, she would keep her feelings to herself and watch as Rhaenyra courted the other women. She couldn't afford to be seen as anything less than a perfect lady, even if it meant hiding her true desires.
///
Alicent spotted Rhaenyra standing by the punch table, and she took a deep breath before approaching her. Rhaenyra turned to face her, and the air between them crackled with tension.
"Good evening, Your Grace," Alicent said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Lady Hightower," Rhaenyra replied, her tone cool and distant.
They stood in silence for a moment, studying each other, before Rhaenyra spoke again. "So, what do you think of the prospective partners at the ball tonight?"
Alicent raised an eyebrow. "I find them all to be rather dull, if I'm being honest. But then again, I'm not really looking for a mate."
Rhaenyra smirked. "Then why are you even here?"
Alicent shrugged. "To please my father, mostly. He's quite insistent that I attend these events, even though he knows I have no intention of marrying this season."
"I see," Rhaenyra said, studying Alicent's face. "And do you have any particular reason for not wanting to marry?"
Alicent hesitated for a moment, then spoke the truth. "Perhaps it's because I don't want to be tied down to someone else's expectations."
Rhaenyra's eyes glinted with amusement. "I can certainly understand that sentiment. But tell me, Lady Hightower, do you ever feel a pang of envy when you see me speaking with other prospective partners?"
Alicent bristled at the question. "Envy? Why would I feel envy?"
Rhaenyra leaned in closer, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Oh, I don't know. Perhaps because you're secretly harboring feelings for me?"
Alicent felt her cheeks flush with heat. "I-I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered.
Rhaenyra chuckled. "Oh, come now. Don't tell me you haven't felt the chemistry between us. I certainly have."
Alicent's heart was pounding in her chest. She knew that Rhaenyra was right, that she had been unable to deny the attraction between them since the moment they had met. But she couldn't let herself be swayed by those feelings. It was too dangerous, too scandalous.
"I think it's best if we keep our interactions strictly platonic, Your Grace," Alicent said, trying to keep her voice steady.
Rhaenyra's expression softened. "I understand, Lady Hightower. But don't think for a moment that I haven't noticed the way you look at me. Or the way my heart races every time I'm near you."
Alicent's resolve wavered for a moment, and she looked away from Rhaenyra's intense gaze. She knew that if she allowed herself to be swayed by her feelings, it could lead to disaster. But the pull between them was too strong to ignore.
"I-I suppose we could dance, if you'd like," Alicent said, finally giving in to the temptation. She’s not even sure why she blurted out those words. She looks surprised at herself.
Rhaenyra's eyes lit up with delight. "I'd like that very much, Lady Hightower."
As Rhaenyra took Alicent's hand and led her to the dance floor, she couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement. She had been waiting for this moment all night.
As Rhaenyra leads Alicent onto the dance floor, the other girls shoot daggers at her with their eyes. Alicent is not used to being the center of attention and feels uncomfortable with all the attention that is being given to her. She looks up at Rhaenyra and notices the intensity in her gaze. She tries to push away her feelings, knowing that this can never go anywhere.
Rhaenyra notices the way Alicent is looking at her and she can't help but smile. "You're quite a dancer," she says, leading her into a spin. "Where did you learn to dance like this?"
"I had a good teacher," Alicent says, feeling her cheeks flush. "But I'd rather not talk about him."
Rhaenyra raises an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? Why not?"
"It's a long story," Alicent says, her eyes flitting away from Rhaenyra's.
"I have all night," Rhaenyra says with a small smirk, pulling Alicent closer. "I'm not going anywhere."
Alicent can feel the heat radiating off of Rhaenyra's body, and it's making it hard for her to focus. "Well, it's not a very interesting story," she says, trying to regain her composure.
Rhaenyra chuckles. "I find that hard to believe. You're full of surprises, Lady Alicent."
Alicent feels a shiver run down her spine at the way Rhaenyra says her name. She knows that she should pull away, that this can't go anywhere, but she can't help but feel drawn to Rhaenyra.
As the song comes to an end, Rhaenyra dips Alicent low, causing her to gasp in surprise.
Their bodies moved in sync as they continued to dance, the tension between them palpable. Rhaenyra wanted nothing more than to pull Alicent closer, to feel the warmth of her body against hers. But she knew that would be improper.
"I have to admit, Lady Alicent, I find you quite... intriguing," Rhaenyra said, unable to resist the urge to flirt.
Alicent's lips curled into a smile. "Oh, really? And what exactly is it that intrigues you about me?"
Rhaenyra leaned in closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "Everything."
Alicent's heart skipped a beat. She had never felt this way before. The way Rhaenyra looked at her, the way she danced with her... it was all too much.
But she knew she couldn't let her guard down completely. Her father was watching them, as were Rhaenyra's parents. She had a reputation to uphold. And if Rhaenyra were to start officially courting her, her father would not give up this opportunity to marry into the Duke’s family.
"So, Lady Alicent, what do you think of this season's prospective suitors?" Rhaenyra asked, leading the conversation.
Alicent lifted an eyebrow. "Oh, I don't know. I find them all rather dull."
"Really? I heard that Lord Tyrell was quite the catch," Rhaenyra teased, twirling Alicent around the dance floor.
"Perhaps," Alicent said coyly. "But I prefer an alpha with a bit more... fire."
Rhaenyra's heart skipped a beat. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. "Is that so?" she said, drawing closer to Alicent.
Alicent's eyes widened slightly at the closeness between them. “I think we should probably stop dancing now," Alicent said, pulling away from Rhaenyra. "We don't want to give anyone the wrong impression."
Rhaenyra's heart sank, but she knew Alicent was right. She didn't want to cause a scandal.
"Of course," Rhaenyra said, stepping back. "I'll see you later, Lady Alicent."
As Rhaenyra walked away, Alicent couldn't help but feel a pang of regret. She wanted nothing more than to be with Rhaenyra, but she knew it could never be. She refused to be another omega mated to a powerful alpha with no power of her own.
///
The next morning, Alicent entered her father's study, taking in the familiar surroundings of the ornate bookshelves and polished wooden furniture. Her father, Lord Hightower, sat at his desk, poring over a stack of papers.
"Alicent, my dear," he said, looking up at her. "Come in. I wanted to speak with you about your prospects for this engagement season."
Alicent took a seat across from him, steeling herself for the conversation she knew was coming.
"I know you have no desire to marry, my dear," Lord Hightower said, clasping his hands together. "But we must consider the family's reputation and alliances. And there is no better match than the Targaryen Duchess."
Alicent's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Rhaenyra, but she tried to keep her face neutral. "I understand, Father. I will do as you wish."
Lord Hightower smiled approvingly. "That's my girl. And remember, if the Duchess shows interest in you, do not hesitate to encourage it. It would be a great honor for our family to be allied with the Targaryens."
Alicent nodded obediently, even as her mind raced with conflicting emotions. She knew she couldn't let her father know how she truly felt about Rhaenyra, but the thought of leading her on for the sake of politics made her stomach turn.
"I will do my best, Father," she said, rising from her seat. "If you'll excuse me, I have some errands to attend to."
Alicent sighs deeply and leaves the study, unsure of what to do.
///
The Queen's luncheon was a time-honored tradition for all the noblewomen in the realm to attend, sans the prospective suitors. The luncheon is held in the grand hall of the queen's palace. The room is adorned with exquisite tapestries, golden chandeliers, and high windows that allow sunlight to filter in, casting a warm glow over the gathering.
As they enter the hall, Alicent's mother introduces her to Lady Laena, a striking woman with dark hair and dark beautiful eyes. They exchange pleasantries and sit down at a table surrounded by other noblewomen, all dressed in their finest gowns and jewels.
Lady Laena leaned in and whispered, "Have you seen the Duchess Rhaenyra today?"
Alicent felt a twinge of jealousy and curiosity at the mention of Rhaenyra's name. "No, I haven't. Why do you ask?" she replied, trying to keep her tone neutral.
"Oh, I was just curious. I heard she visited you the other day, and I must say, I'm quite envious," Lady Laena said, her tone light and teasing.
Alicent felt a blush creep up her neck at the mention of Rhaenyra's visit. She had been trying to push the memory to the back of her mind, but it seemed Lady Laena had picked up on something. "I believe you are mistaken, my lady" Alicent replied, hoping her tone didn't betray her.
Lady Laena raised an eyebrow, noticing the slight hesitation in Alicent's voice. "Oh? It seems the Duchess has been rather selective with her visits. She hasn't come to my house or any of the other omegas’ houses, as far as I know," she said, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
Alicent couldn't help but feel a bit flattered that Rhaenyra had only visited her, but at the same time, she was frustrated that nobody seemed to know about it. "I suppose she has her reasons," Alicent said, trying to keep her tone casual.
Lady Laena nodded, but her eyes lingered on Alicent for a moment before she excused herself to talk to another noblewoman. Alicent couldn't help but feel a bit of jealousy at the attention Rhaenyra was receiving from the other women, but at the same time, she couldn't deny the way her heart skipped a beat at the thought of the duchess.
///
As the carriage ride back home began, Lady Ceryse Hightower ooked at her daughter expectantly, waiting for an explanation.
"Alicent, why did you lie about Rhaenyra's visit?" Lady Ceryse asked.
Alicent sighed and looked out of the carriage window. "I just didn't think it was anyone’s business and besides, I rejected her courtship as you know. But this was before father told me of his wishes" she replied nervously.
"Rhaenyra is a highly esteemed lady with royal blood. You will eventually have to marry someone, and it may as well be her. You should give her a real chance," Lady Ceryse urged.
Alicent looked down at her lap, unsure of how to respond. She knew her mother was right, but the thought of marriage made her feel trapped. "I will try, Mother," she said quietly.
"Good. And remember, you don't have to rush into anything. Take your time and get to know her," Lady Ceryse said reassuringly.
Alicent nodded and leaned back against the cushioned seat, lost in thought.
///
Rhaenyra sits with her father, Viserys, at the prestigious Alpha’s Club in the heart of King's Landing. The room is filled with the elite of the city, men of noble birth who have gathered to discuss politics, trade, and most importantly, marriage prospects for their daughters.
Rhaenyra sat in the plush armchair of the Alpha’s Club, her father, Viserys, seated across from her. He swirled the glass of amber liquid in his hand as he spoke.
Viserys leans in, his voice low and serious. "You know that the Hightowers are one of the most powerful and influential families in the Seven Kingdoms. You need to court one of their daughters this season and secure their support."
Rhaenyra sighs, feeling the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. "I know, Father. But I've tried to court Alicent, and she rejected me."
Viserys looks surprised. "Alicent? Why, she would be an excellent match for you. Why did she reject you?"
"I don't know, Father," Rhaenyra replies, frustration evident in her voice. "But it doesn't matter now. She's clearly not interested."
Viserys nods, understanding his daughter's disappointment. "Then you must move on, my dear. There are plenty of other eligible ladies in the realm. What about Lady Laena of Driftmark or Lady Margaery of Tyrell?"
Rhaenyra shakes her head, her mind still on Alicent. "I can't seem to shake my feelings for her, Father. But I understand the importance of securing a strong alliance."
Rhaenyra looks at her father skeptically. "And what about the younger Hightower sister?" he asks. "Has she already received offers?"
Rhaenyra nods. "Father, this is her first season out. And if I cannot have Alicent, I do not want any other Hightower.”
Viserys gives his daughter a sad smile. "I understand, my dear. But sometimes we must make sacrifices for the good of our family and our people."
Rhaenyra nods, knowing her father is right. She takes a sip of her wine, lost in thought about her future and the weight of her responsibilities.
Viserys pushes a drink toward his stubborn alpha daughter, his only heir. "You are a true Targaryen, Rhaenyra. Your duty comes before your personal desires. I have faith that you will find the right match and make us all proud."
Rhaenyra forces a smile, trying to hide her disappointment. She knows that her father is right, but she can't help but feel drawn to Alicent Hightower. She must put her feelings aside and focus on her duty to her family and her lands.
///
It was yet another grand ball, with couples swirling around the dance floor in their finest attire. Alicent was standing off to the side, watching the scene with a mixture of boredom and annoyance. Suddenly, she felt a hand on her arm and turned to see Rhaenyra standing there.
"Come with me," Rhaenyra said, her eyes darting around the room. "I need to talk to you."
Alicent followed Rhaenyra out into the gardens, feeling a thrill of excitement at the forbiddenness of it all. But as soon as they were alone, the reality of their situation hit her. If they were caught, it would mean ruin for her reputation and she would be forced to marry Rhaenyra.
"What are you doing?" Alicent hissed, her eyes darting around nervously. "We can't be out here alone."
"I had to talk to you," Rhaenyra said, taking a step closer to her. "In private. I had no other choice."
"Well, you could have waited," Alicent said, feeling her heart racing in her chest. "Or found a more appropriate time and place."
"I didn't have time to wait," Rhaenyra said, her eyes fixed on Alicent's. "My father is pushing for me to wed this season, and I have no choice. The only choice I want is you, Alicent."
Alicent's heart swelled with joy at the words, but she quickly squashed it down. "It can't be," she said, her voice strained. "We both know that."
Rhaenyra's expression fell, and Alicent felt a pang of guilt. But then Rhaenyra spoke again, and Alicent felt a surge of anger.
"I may have to court your sister," Rhaenyra said, her voice low. "It seems she's on my father’s list of prospective omegas."
Alicent felt blind jealousy grip her heart. "What?" she spat out. "You can't be serious."
"I am," Rhaenyra said, her expression stony. "I had to tell you before you heard it from someone else."
Alicent felt a surge of anger and betrayal. How could Rhaenyra even consider courting her sister? She was the one she wanted, the one she had shared moments with. And now, just because Alicent couldn't be with her, she was considering courting another Hightower?
"I can't even look at you right now," Alicent said, turning on her heel and stalking away.
As soon as Alicent starts to walk away, Rhaenyra lightly grabs her by the wrist. Alicent stumbles into Rhaenyra’s embrace.
Alicent looks at Rhaenyra, her heart racing with conflicting emotions. She wants to give in to her desire, to pull Rhaenyra closer and kiss her until they are both breathless. But she also knows the consequences of their actions, and she cannot risk her reputation or her family's honor.
Rhaenyra's hand slides from Alicent's wrist to her cheek, and Alicent shivers at the touch. "I cannot deny the way I feel about you, Alicent," Rhaenyra whispers, her breath hot against Alicent's ear. "I want you more than anything."
Alicent closes her eyes, her body responding to Rhaenyra's touch. She can feel her heart beating out of her chest, and she knows that if they were caught, they would be forced to wed tonight. In these times, it is forbidden to even kiss before marriage, and the consequences of their actions would be dire. For an alpha like Rhaenyra, she would be fine. But for omegas, they must remain pure.
"I cannot do this," Alicent says, her voice barely above a whisper. "I cannot risk everything for something that cannot be."
"Tell me this, if you feel something for me too, why do you fight it?" Rhaenyra asks Alicent softly. Alicent bites her lip and looks away knowing she must lie to Rhaenyra about her true feelings.
“I do not feel for you the way you feel for me, your Grace." Alicent mumbles the lie convincingly. Rhaenyra takes a step back as if she's been burned.
"My mistake, my lady. I seem to have misinterpreted this. Please forgive me. I hope we can be friends." Rhaenyra says sadly and confused. She feels like she's done something wrong, especially since she asked Alicent to come to the gardens like this with her, risking the omega's reputation.
"I am sorry, your Grace. I did not mean to lead you on. I only see you as a friend," Alicent lies through her teeth, trying to keep her voice steady. Her heart cannot afford such a heartbreak.
Rhaenyra nods slowly, trying to keep her emotions in check. "I understand, Lady Alicent. I won't bother you with my foolishness anymore."
As Rhaenyra turns to leave, Alicent's heart aches with regret. She wants to call out to her, to tell her the truth, but she knows she can't. She watches as Rhaenyra walks away, feeling a sense of loss she cannot explain.
Alicent's heart aches at the thought of losing Rhaenyra, but she cannot let herself be vulnerable. She has been taught from a young age that love and affection are dangerous emotions for omegas, who are only valued for their marriageability. She swore to herself a long time ago that she would never wed an alpha and it’s a promise she intends to keep.
///
Alicent stands by the wall, watching as Rhaenyra dances with Lady Margaery. The two of them seem to be enjoying each other's company, and Alicent can't help but feel a pang of jealousy. She knows she shouldn't feel this way, but she can't help it.
As Rhaenyra twirls Lady Margaery around the dance floor, Alicent's mind races with thoughts. What if Rhaenyra falls in love with Lady Margaery? What if they get married and have children together? The thought is almost too much for Alicent to bear.
She takes a deep breath and tries to push these thoughts out of her mind. She knows that she needs to focus on her own life and her own happiness. She can't keep pining after someone who can never be hers.
Alicent turns away from the dance floor and walks over to a table where some of the other prospective brides are sitting. She joins in their conversation, trying to keep her mind occupied.
Rhaenyra dances with many other women, but she always seems to come back to Lady Margaery. Alicent watches from a distance, trying to keep her emotions in check.
But as the night wears on, Rhaenyra seems to steer clear of Alicent's family, much to her relief. Until, that is, she spots her chatting with Dany Hightower, Alicent's younger sister who is also making her debut this season. Alicent's heart drops as she watches them talk, her mind racing with fear that Rhaenyra might show interest in her sister.
Alicent tries to focus on her own conversations, smiling and laughing with suitors as they vie for her attention. But her eyes keep darting back to Rhaenyra and Dany, and her stomach churns with a mix of jealousy and anxiety.
In the meantime, Ser Criston Cole approaches her with a bow and asks if he could have the pleasure of a dance. She looks over to Rhaenyra, who seems to be chatting animatedly with Lady Margaery of Tyrell, and decides to accept the offer. She can feel Rhaenyra's eyes on her as she makes her way to the dance floor with Ser Criston.
As they begin to dance, Alicent can't help but feel a sense of relief that Rhaenyra is not watching her every move anymore. However, she can sense Rhaenyra's jealousy emanating from across the room like a palpable force.
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is seething with anger as she watches Lady Alicent dance with Ser Criston. She had been hoping that Alicent would remain alone on the sidelines, pining for her. But instead, she sees her dancing gracefully with another man. Rhaenyra can't take it anymore and she abruptly excuses herself from her conversation with Lady Margaery, stalking off towards the exit with clenched fists and a furrowed brow.
As she steps out of the ballroom, she tries to quell the feelings of jealousy and rage bubbling inside of her.
Rhaenyra storms out of the ballroom, the fabric of her dress rustling against the marble floors. She doesn't care that her father is following her; she needs to be alone.
As she reaches the gardens, she hears her father's footsteps quickening behind her. He catches up to her, out of breath from the chase.
"Rhaenyra, what were you thinking?" he scolds her. "Your actions tonight have been unbecoming of a Duchess."
Rhaenyra bristles at his words. "What actions? I was merely dancing with some prospective mates."
Her father's eyes narrow. "Don't play coy with me. I saw the way you looked at Lady Alicent. This drama with the Hightowers is bad for our reputation. You need to steer clear of her."
Rhaenyra crosses her arms defensively. "And what about my own desires, Father? I cannot just marry for the sake of an alliance. I need to love my wife."
Her father sighs heavily, running a hand through his greying hair. "I understand your desires, Rhaenyra, but we cannot afford to ignore the benefits of a Hightower alliance. I require you to choose two prospective wives tomorrow, and one of them must be Dany Hightower."
Rhaenyra's jaw tightens. She knows that her father is right, but it doesn't mean she has to like it. "And if I refuse?"
"Then I will choose for you," her father replies firmly. "I am the leader of our house and your father, Rhaenyra. You will do as I say."
Rhaenyra clenches her fists in frustration, but she knows that arguing further would be pointless. She nods curtly, silently seething at the thought of being forced to marry someone she doesn't love.
Her father puts a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I know this is difficult, my daughter. But sometimes, duty must come before personal desires."
Rhaenyra nods again, feeling defeated. She knows that her father is right, but it doesn't make the situation any less painful.
///
As Rhaenyra entered the Hightower House, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. This wasn't the first time she had been here, but the last time had been under much different circumstances. Alicent's parents, Lord and Lady Hightower, were seated in the parlor when Rhaenyra was ushered in by a servant.
"Your Grace, to what do we owe the pleasure?" Lord Hightower asked politely.
Rhaenyra took a deep breath before responding. "I have come to officially request a courtship with Lady Dany Hightower."
Lady Hightower's eyebrows shot up in surprise, while Alicent's face contorted into a scowl. "Lady Dany?" Lord Hightower repeated, clearly taken aback. "We were under the impression that you were interested in Lady Alicent."
Rhaenyra shifted uncomfortably. "I apologize for any confusion. I have been instructed to pursue a courtship with Lady Dany for the benefit of the realm."
Dany's face lit up with excitement, while Alicent's expression remained stoic. Rhaenyra could feel the tension in the room, and it made her uneasy.
"Of course, Your Grace," Lady Hightower said with a forced smile. "We will make arrangements for the courtship to begin as soon as possible."
As Rhaenyra took her leave, she couldn't help but feel a sense of regret. She had wanted to court Alicent, but her father's orders had made that impossible. She knew that she had hurt Alicent, but she couldn't let her own desires get in the way of what was best for the realm.
As for Alicent, she was seething with jealousy and frustration. She knew that she couldn't openly express her anger, but it burned within her like a raging fire. She understood that Rhaenyra was just doing as she was told, but it still hurt.
Dany, on the other hand, was overjoyed at the prospect of being courted by a Duchess. She couldn't stop smiling, and her parents were thrilled at the opportunity to form an alliance with the royal family.
The room was filled with conflicting emotions and unspoken tensions, but everyone knew that they had to do what was best for their families and for the realm.
///
As Dany went upstairs to prepare for a chaperoned walk in the gardens with Rhaenyra, the queen waited on their private patio. Alicent, who had been wandering the halls, stumbled upon the scene and hesitated for a moment before approaching Rhaenyra.
The Duchess looked up as Alicent walked over, and their eyes met in a charged moment. Rhaenyra's heart skipped a beat at the sight of the beautiful omega before her, and she couldn't help but smile in appreciation.
"You look stunning today, Lady Alicent," she said, trying to keep her tone light and friendly.
Alicent smiled politely, though her eyes betrayed a hint of nervousness. "Thank you, your Grace. I was just passing by and noticed you were waiting."
Rhaenyra nodded, gesturing to the empty chairs around the table. "Please, join me. I was just passing the time until Lady Dany is ready for our walk."
As Alicent took a seat, Rhaenyra couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of Dany's upcoming courtship. She had hoped to court Alicent herself, but it seemed the omega had no plans for marriage.
Rhaenyra leaned against the patio railing, gazing out at the lush gardens that surrounded them. "So, Lady Alicent," she began with a playful smile, "what mischief do you plan on getting into today?"
Alicent joined her, leaning against the railing next to her. "Mischief? My lady, I assure you I am a model of decorum."
Rhaenyra laughed. "That's precisely what makes me suspect you of mischief. The quiet ones are always the most dangerous."
Alicent chuckled. "I suppose you have a point there, Your Grace. But as for today, I have no plans."
"No plans? How unlike you," Rhaenyra teased. "Surely you can think of something to do on such a beautiful day."
"I could," Alicent said, her eyes flickering over to Rhaenyra, "but then I might have to abandon this lovely company."
Rhaenyra's cheeks flushed slightly at the compliment. "Well, we wouldn't want that now, would we?"
Alicent smiled, a hint of sadness in her eyes. "No, I suppose we wouldn't. Although, it seems we'll be family one way or another now that you're courting my sister."
Rhaenyra's smile faltered slightly at the mention of Dany. "Yes, it seems that way."
Alicent's mother watched from a distance, observing the interaction between the two young women with confusion. She had thought there was a spark between Alicent and Rhaenyra, but it seemed that she was mistaken.
As Rhaenyra and Alicent continued their banter, the tension between them grew, charged with unspoken romantic attraction. Despite the fact that Alicent had no plans to wed, she couldn't deny the pull she felt towards the Targaryen princess. But she knew she had to keep her feelings in check, as Rhaenyra had now set her sights on Dany.
As they chatted, Rhaenyra reached for the milk to add to her tea at the same time as Alicent. Their hands brushed against each other, causing both of them to freeze for a moment. Neither of them moved their hands, and the tension in the air grew stronger.
Rhaenyra's fingers softly opened Alicent's palm, her thumb tracing soft circles on her skin. Alicent shivered at the touch, feeling her body respond in ways she didn't quite understand. They knew that what they were doing was wrong, but in that moment, they couldn't bring themselves to care.
They continued to talk, their voices low and intimate, but Alicent regrettably pulled her hand away from Rhaenyra’s touch. She could smell the alpha pheromones spiking in the air and she couldn’t help the omega pheromones she was giving off.
Neither of them mentioned the touch, both pretending that everything was normal, but the charged atmosphere between them was unmistakable.
They continued talking, both pretending like the moment hadn't happened, but the air was charged with an unspoken desire. Finally, after a few minutes, Alicent cleared her throat and sprang up from her chair. "I, uh, I should get going," she stammered, her voice betraying her nerves.
Rhaenyra apologized again, her own voice tinged with regret. Alicent waved it off, but her hands were shaking as she smoothed down her dress. She curtsied to Rhaenyra and then turned to leave, bumping into her mother as she did so.
Lady Hightower gave her daughter a disapproving glare, her eyes lingering on Rhaenyra for a moment before turning back to Alicent. "I saw that little interaction between you and the Duchess," she said sternly. "Do not forget your duty to your family and your house. You rejected the Duchess and now she is set to court your sister. Do not cause any scandal. You are lucky we allow you to choose your own marriage for love."
Alicent's heart sank at the disappointment in her mother's voice. She nodded mutely and then made her way out of the room, her mind whirling with conflicting emotions.
///
The sun was shining and the flowers were in full bloom as Rhaenyra and Dany strolled through the gardens, with Dany's mother following at a respectable distance. As they walked, they chatted and got to know each other better.
"So, Lady Dany, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?" Rhaenyra asked, trying to keep the conversation light and friendly.
"I enjoy painting and reading," Dany replied, smiling. "And I love spending time with my family."
Rhaenyra nodded. "Family is important, I agree. Speaking of family, I couldn't help but notice the tension between you and Lady Alicent."
Dany's face fell slightly at the mention of her sister. "Yes, we don't always see eye to eye," she said, her tone guarded. “She has changed in the past few years since her engagement.”
Rhaenyra sensed Dany's unease. “Her engagement? Lady Alicent was engaged?” Rhaenyra asks with surprise. She assumed with the way gossip works in this town that she would already know this. Rhaenyra quickly added, "I don't mean to pry, I just thought perhaps we could get to know each other better. What happened?"
Dany hesitated for a moment before responding. "Yes, she was engaged to a Lord from the Reach. It was her first season out, and they were quite fond of each other. But unfortunately, he passed away suddenly."
Rhaenyra's heart went out to Alicent. Losing a love so early in life would be a devastating blow. "I'm sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how difficult that must have been for her."
Dany nodded. "It was a difficult time for all of us. But we've learned to move on and cherish the time we have with each other."
As they continued walking and chatting, Rhaenyra couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the story than Dany was letting on. But for now, she decided to let it go and focus on getting to know Dany better.
Meanwhile, Dany's mother was trailing behind, watching the two of them with a keen eye. She couldn't help but wonder what Rhaenyra's true intentions were with her daughter. And when she saw the brief touch between Rhaenyra and Alicent in the gardens earlier, her suspicions only grew. She made a mental note to keep a close eye on their interactions in the future.
Dany starts talking again, while looking down at her feet. "I know it's silly," she said, "but ever since I was a little girl and heard stories about you, I just...I don't know, I always felt drawn to you, your Grace.”
Rhaenyra smiles gently. "It's not silly," she said softly. "You're a lovely young woman, and I'm honored to have the chance to get to know you better."
Dany smiled up at her, a glint of something in her eyes that Rhaenyra couldn't quite place. "I'm glad..And may I ask, why have you chosen to court me?”
Rhaenyra replied honestly, "I must confess, it wasn't entirely my choice to court you. It was my father who approached me with the idea."
Dany's eyebrows raised in surprise. "The Duke thought me to be a good match for the future Duchess?" she echoed in awe.
Rhaenyra nodded. "Yes, he seems to think we would make a good match."
Dany smiled at that. "And do you think so too, Lady Rhaenyra?"
Dany smiled warmly at Rhaenyra, "I hope so too. I must say, I am looking forward to getting to know you better."
Rhaenyra returned the smile, "Likewise, my lady. And thank you for sharing that information about Lady Alicent's past. I had no idea."
Dany nodded, "Yes, it was a tragic event. But it's something that has shaped her, I think. Made her more guarded, perhaps."
Rhaenyra furrowed her brow slightly, "Guarded, you say? I can see how that might be a challenge."
Dany shrugged, "It is what it is. But don't let it deter you. Although we may fight sometimes, she is still a great person to have by your side.”
Rhaenyra chuckled, "I have no doubt about that."
As they continued walking, Rhaenyra's mind couldn't help but wander back to her conversation with Alicent earlier that day. She knew that the touch of their hands had been inappropriate, but she couldn't deny the feelings that it had stirred within her. She shook her head slightly to clear her thoughts and refocused on her conversation with Dany.
///
The ladies were gathered for a luncheon at the grand hall of the castle. The room was filled with chatter and laughter as they all enjoyed the delicious spread of food and drink. The table was set with the finest silverware and crystal glasses, and the air was scented with the aroma of fresh flowers.
Lady Laena had just finished her plate and was now chatting with Lady Alicent, who sat next to her. She leaned in and said in a surprised tone, "I heard that Lady Margaery and your sister are the top contenders for the Duchess's heart. How do you feel about that, Lady Alicent?"
Alicent schooled her features, but internally she was upset. She put on a polite smile and replied, "Oh, I'm happy for them. Lady Margaery and my sister are both lovely ladies and would make excellent companions for the Duchess."
The other ladies at the table listened intently, some nodding in agreement while others gave knowing looks. The topic of the Duchess's love life was always a popular one among the ladies of the court, and everyone had their own opinions and speculations.
Another Lady, the older already married Lady Ygritte cuts into the conversation.
"Oh, speaking of Rhaenyra," Lady Ygritte interjects, her voice dripping with gossip. "Did you hear about her past love affairs?"
Alicent raises an eyebrow, intrigued by the sudden change of topic. "What about them?" she asks, feigning disinterest.
Lady Ygritte leans in conspiratorially. "Well, everyone knows she was in love with a woman who owned the modiste in town - Talisa, I believe her name was."
Alicent's heart skips a beat at the mention of Rhaenyra's former love interest. She tries to hide her jealousy, but her grip on her silverware tightens.
"And?" Lady Laena prompts eagerly.
Lady Ygritte lowers her voice even further. "There are rumors that Talisa's children are actually Rhaenyra’s bastards. Of course, Talisa is already mated to another and is much below Rhaenyra’s station, so it's all quite scandalous."
Alicent's eyes widen in shock at the scandalous revelation. She can't help but feel a twinge of envy towards Rhaenyra's past love interest. She forces a smile and says, "Well, it seems Rhaenyra has moved one then if this is true.”
Lady Ygritte interjects, "Moved on? Oh, my dear, if only it were that simple. You see, Rhaenyra's family is forcing her into marriage. They want her to secure their position and maintain their wealth with a legitimate heir."
Alicent raises her eyebrows in surprise. "I suppose that would explain why she's been so focused on marriage lately."
Lady Ygritte nods. "Indeed. And to make matters worse, Rhaenyra was with Talisa for years in secret before her family forced her into the role of duty above love. It's quite tragic, really."
Alicent feels a pang of sympathy for Rhaenyra. "That is truly heartbreaking. It must be difficult for her to let go of someone she loved for so long."
Lady Laena chimes in, "Well, duty calls. We can't always have what we want, can we?"
Alicent nods in agreement, but inwardly she can't help but wonder if she'll ever have the chance to choose love over duty. She also makes a mental note that she may need to visit the modiste in town..for a new dress of course.
///
Alicent entered the modiste and was greeted by Talisa. "Good afternoon, Lady Alicent. What can I do for you today?" she asked.
"I'm in need of a new dress for an upcoming ball. Something that will make me stand out," Alicent replied, eyeing Talisa's children playing in the corner.
Talisa nodded and led Alicent to the fabrics. As they browsed, Alicent asked casually, "So, how are your children?"
Talisa's smile faltered for a moment before she replied, "They are doing well, thank you for asking."
Alicent noticed the hesitation and pressed on, "How many do you have again? Two?"
"No, three," Talisa said, her eyes flickering to her youngest with silver hair.
Alicent sucked in a sharp breath, her mind racing. If the rumors were true, then that child must be Rhaenyra's. She tried to hide her surprise and asked, "And their father, how is he doing?"
"He's well," Talisa replied curtly. "He's a hardworking man and provides for our family."
Alicent could sense the tension in Talisa's voice and knew she was treading on thin ice. She decided to change tactics and asked, "And how old is the little one? He must be so young."
"He's a few months old," Talisa answered, still guarded.
"He has such beautiful silver hair," Alicent commented, studying the baby more closely. "I've never seen anything like it before. It's quite striking."
Talisa's face hardened and she pulled her baby closer to her chest protectively. "It's just a quirk of genetics," she said sharply. "Nothing more."
Alicent could feel the tension in the air and realized she had pushed too far. She tried to backpedal and said, "I'm sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean to pry. I was just curious."
Talisa softened slightly and said, "It's alright. I know of the rumors."
Alicent nodded understandingly, but couldn't shake the feeling of disappointment. She had hoped to glean some more information about Rhaenyra's past love affairs, but it seemed Talisa was not willing to share any more than she already had.
As she was about to leave, Talisa called out to her, "Alicent, you've been coming to my shop for years. I know you and you do not fool me. I know that you were one of the top contenders for Rhaenyra's mate."
Alicent froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She had tried to keep her feelings for Rhaenyra under wraps, but it seemed that Talisa knew more than she let on. She forced a smile and said, "You are mistaken. We simply shared a few dances at the balls. She is courting my sister, Dany."
Talisa nodded knowingly and said, "Just be careful, my lady. It is good to keep your own secrets close to you and not pry into others." With that, she turned and went back to tending to her children, leaving Alicent to ponder her words.
Alicent stepped out of the modiste's shop, her mind in a frenzy. She had been coming to Talisa's shop for years and had never suspected anything about Rhaenyra's past love affairs. Now, as she walked away from the shop, she couldn't help but feel betrayed and insecure.
Her mind raced as she thought about Rhaenyra's situation. She had never realized the extent of the pressure that was put on Rhaenyra to marry and carry on the family name. She thought back to her own past love, a young lord from the neighboring lands. They had only known each other briefly before he was sent away to fight in a war, and she never saw him again. She regretted wasting so much of their time together in frivolous courtship traditions.
As she walked down the street lost in thought, she was startled by a voice behind her. "Lady Alicent, I didn't expect to see you here." She turned to see Lady Ygritte standing behind her.
Alicent quickly tried to compose herself, "Oh, Lady Ygritte. I was just running some errands. How are you?"
"I'm well, thank you. I couldn't help but notice that you were at Talisa's shop. Did you find something you liked?"
Alicent's mind raced for a response. She didn't want to betray her feelings, but she also couldn't keep the curiosity at bay. "Yes, the dresses were beautiful as always. I couldn't help but notice Talisa's children. How old is the youngest?"
Ygritte raised an eyebrow, sensing Alicent's line of questioning. "He's just a baby. Why do you ask?"
"Oh, it's just that his hair is so striking. I was curious," Alicent lied, trying to keep the conversation light.
Ygritte's expression turned serious. "Alicent, I know that you were one of the top contenders for Rhaenyra's hand before she began courting your sister, which I will not pretend to understand what happened there. And I know you were at the luncheon when us ladies shared gossip over the Duchess. It's natural to be curious about her past, but I would advise you to not go digging in the Targaeryen’s business. It’s one thing to gossip about these things but another to place yourself in the center of it.”
Alicent felt a pang of guilt wash over her. She had been so focused on Rhaenyra's past that she didn’t realize the damage she could be creating. Before she could speak again, Lady Ygritte spoke again.
“Now, why don't you join me on a walk to enjoy this beautiful day?"
Alicent nodded, grateful for the distraction, but her mind still lingering on the starting revelations of today.
///
Alicent stormed into the drawing room, throwing her cloak and gloves on a chair before collapsing onto a chaise lounge. Her mother looked up from her embroidery and raised an eyebrow inquiringly.
"Mother, you won't believe what I just found out," Alicent said, her voice trembling with emotion.
Her mother put her embroidery aside and gave her daughter her full attention. "What is it, my dear?"
"It's Rhaenyra," Alicent said, her voice low and bitter. "I went to Talisa's shop, and she has a child with silver hair. A child that must be Rhaenyra's. And who knows how many more there are out there that we don't know about."
Her mother sighed and shook her head. "I'm not surprised, my dear. Rhaenyra has the freedom of being an alpha and she's used it to pursue her own desires. Not to mention, she was the secnd child of the Duke. Baelon, her older brother, was supposed to inherit the title and all the duty that came with it before he died last year. She was never raised to carry the burden of such duty. They let her do as she pleased."
Alicent sat up straight, feeling sorry for Rhaenyra after remembering that Rhaenyra’s brother recently passed. But her eyes still flashed with anger or perhaps jealousy. "But what about Dany? Shouldn't she know about this? I mean, Rhaenyra is courting her. She has a right to know about her past."
Her mother gave her a stern look. "No, she does not. What good would it do to tell her? Rhaenyra is being forced to mate, and there's nothing she or anyone else can do about it. Bringing up her past love affairs would only cause unnecessary pain and embarrassment."
"But it's not fair!" Alicent protested. "Why should Rhaenyra get away with all of this while we have to follow the rules and behave ourselves?"
"Life is not fair, my dear," her mother said with a sad smile. "We must make the best of what we have and try to find happiness where we can."
Alicent slumped back onto the chaise lounge, her anger deflating. She knew her mother was right, but it still hurt to think about Rhaenyra and all the secrets she was keeping. She thought back to her own first love, a young man who had been swept away by death before they could truly get to know each other. She had always regretted not spending more time with him, not taking the chance to learn everything about him.
"I just wish I knew everything about Rhaenyra," Alicent said softly. "I wish I knew what was in her heart, what she truly wants."
Her mother sighed and put a comforting hand on her daughter's shoulder. "My dear, we cannot control what is in someone else's heart. All we can do is decide what is best for ourselves. And what is best for you right now is to focus on finding your own happiness, not worrying about Rhaenyra's."
Alicent nodded, knowing her mother was right, but still feeling the pang of jealousy in her heart. "But what if Dany gets hurt?" she asked. "What if Rhaenyra doesn't truly care for her?"
Her mother shook her head. "That is not our concern, my dear. We cannot control other people's actions or feelings. All we can do is be true to ourselves and our own desires."
"But what if my desire is to be with Rhaenyra?" Alicent blurted out, surprising even herself.
Her mother looked at her with a mixture of surprise and concern. "Alicent, you know that is not possible. You rejected her. And now she is courting Dany."
"I know, but..." Alicent trailed off, not sure how to express the conflicting emotions inside her.
Her mother sighed. "Alicent, please listen to me. This situation is becoming too dangerous. It could end in scandal, and it could hurt you and our family. I advise you to stay away from Rhaenyra and focus on finding someone else to love."
Alicent nodded, knowing her mother was right, but still feeling the ache in her heart. She knew it would not be easy to forget about Rhaenyra, but she also knew she had to try for the sake of her own happiness and the reputation of her family.
///
Alicent and Dany stood before a large ornate mirror in Alicent's dressing room, getting ready for the ball. The room was dimly lit with flickering candles that cast a warm glow on the two women.
Dany was wearing a beautiful emerald green gown, her hair piled high on her head in loose curls. Alicent wore a cream-colored dress with silver accents that complemented her dark hair
Alicent lets out a sigh, "I still can't believe we're going to this ball. It seems like such a waste of time.?"
Dany chuckles, "Well, it's a ball, it’s our duty to attend and find mates for the betterment of our family."
Alicent rolls her eyes, "I'm not sure if I'm cut out for this whole marriage thing. It's all so tedious."
Dany pauses and looks at her sister, "Is everything alright, Alicent? You seem a bit off lately."
Alicent hesitates for a moment before finally speaking up, "It's just that...I heard some rumors about Rhaenyra."
Dany raises an eyebrow, "What kind of rumors?"
Alicent takes a deep breath, "Well, I heard that she has a history of...being with many omegas and having children out of wedlock."
Dany looks shocked, "What? That can't be true. Rhaenyra would never do something like that."
Alicent nods, "That's what I thought too, but the rumors are spreading like wildfire. I just don't want you to get hurt, Dany."
Dany looks at herself in the mirror before continuing to speak. "I appreciate your concern, Alicent, but I trust Rhaenyra. She's been nothing but kind and honest with me."
Alicent puts on a fake smile, "Of course, I'm sorry if I came across as overprotective. I just want what's best for you."
Dany gives her a reassuring smile, "I know, Alicent. And I appreciate it.”
They finish getting ready and head out to the ball, putting their worries about Rhaenyra and the rumors aside for the time being.
///
Alicent and Dany walked down the grand staircase, each step echoing beneath them as they descended into the ballroom. The walls were adorned with intricate tapestries, the floors covered in plush red carpet, and the chandeliers were so large and extravagant that they could light up the entire room on their own.
Their mother had been waiting for them at the bottom of the stairs, resplendent in a flowing gold gown that sparkled in the candlelight. The three of them made their way through the crowd, stopping occasionally to greet acquaintances.
As they passed through the gardens, Alicent's eyes fell on Rhaenyra, who was sitting alone on a bench, looking out over the moonlit pond. Despite the risk of being caught alone with her, Alicent felt compelled to speak with her about Talisa.
She excused herself from her mother and sister and made her way over to Rhaenyra. "May I join you?" she asked, taking a seat on the bench next to her.
Rhaenyra looked up at her and nodded, a tight-lipped expression on her face.
Alicent took a deep breath. "I wanted to talk to you about Talisa," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rhaenyra's expression grew guarded. "What about her?"
Alicent hesitated, unsure how to proceed. "I heard... rumors. About her and you."
Rhaenyra's jaw clenched. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Alicent leaned in closer. "Please, Rhaenyra. I just want to know the truth."
Rhaenyra's eyes narrowed. "And why do you care?"
Alicent's heart raced. She couldn't admit to having feelings for Rhaenyra, not when it could ruin her reputation. "I just... I want to know what's going on. For Dany's sake."
Rhaenyra's lips twitched. "And what about your sake?"
Alicent's breath caught in her throat. Alicent's cheeks flamed at the mention of her own sake. "I don't have any feelings for you," she muttered, attempting to pull away from Rhaenyra's grip.
But Rhaenyra wasn't having it. She held tight to Alicent's hands and pulled her in close. "You can't hide your feelings from me, Alicent," she said, her breath warm against Alicent's face. "I know you better than you know yourself."
Alicent sucked in a sharp breath and closed her eyes as Rhaenyra cupped her face and pulled them close, pressing their foreheads together. She could feel Rhaenyra's breath on her lips and the heat of her body against her own. Alicent was so close to giving in and admitting she had fallen for Rhaenyra, but then Rhaenyra had to go and bring up her first love.
"I know your first love died," Rhaenyra said softly. "I'll be patient with you, Alicent. I know it's hard to trust again."
Alicent's eyes snapped open and she pulled away from Rhaenyra's touch. "Don't you dare bring him up," she hissed, her voice trembling with anger. "You have no right to compare yourself to him, to our love."
Rhaenyra recoiled as if struck, hurt flashing in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Alicent. I didn't mean to upset you," she said softly.
But Alicent was beyond reason now, and her words came out in a hot rush. "You don't know what love is, Rhaenyra. You're just playing games with people's hearts. Don't ever compare yourself to him, to what we had."
With that, she turned on her heel and stormed off, her heart racing and her mind a jumbled mess of conflicting emotions.
///
The grand ballroom was decorated in all its splendor, shimmering with gold and silver accents that adorned the walls and chandeliers that illuminated the room in a warm, inviting glow. The dance floor was a sea of flowing dresses and polished shoes as the aristocracy twirled around to the sound of live music. Rhaenyra, in a gown of royal purple, rushed through the crowd to find her father, Viserys Targaryen, who was chatting with a group of important-looking men.
"Father," she said, pulling him aside, "I must talk to you. It's urgent."
Viserys gave her a concerned look and nodded, leading her to a quieter corner of the room.
"What is it, my dear?" he asked.
Rhaenyra took a deep breath. "I cannot be anywhere near Alicent Hightower," she said in a low voice. "And marrying her sister would cause us to be forever connected."
Viserys frowned. "Rhaenyra, I was just talking with Otto Hightower, and we came to an agreement. If you agree to marry Dany, he'll provide us with the supplies we need for our lands."
Rhaenyra's eyes widened. "Marry Dany? But Father, did you hear what I just said?"
Viserys shrugged. "This is the life of being the future Duchess, my dear. Sometimes we must make sacrifices for the greater good. And who knows, perhaps you'll grow to love her in time. Dany is a beautiful omega. She is a diamond. My union with your mother was not my choice but in time, we grew to have a deep love unlike anything I’ve experienced."
Rhaenyra bit her lip, unsure of what to do. "Do I have no choice in the matter?"
Viserys gave her a sympathetic look. "I'm afraid not, a marriage with Dany would be politically advantageous for us. And it would be good for the optics if you proposed to her tonight, in front of everyone."
Rhaenyra nodded slowly, her mind racing with thoughts of what this marriage could mean for her and her family. She didn't know if she could go through with it, but she knew she had to try. She took a deep breath and steeled herself, preparing to make the biggest decision of her life.

In the midst of all the opulence, Alicent Hightower stormed into the ballroom, her chest heaving with anger. Her mother, noticed her daughter's flushed cheeks and hurried to her side, pulling her away from the crowd.
"Alicent, what's wrong?" Her mother asked in a hushed tone. At the same time, she notices Rhaenyra rush into the ballroom, equally flushed as well. Realization dawns on her. “Tell me you were not just alone with the future Duchess.”
Alicent took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. "I saw Rhaenyra in the garden, and I had to confront her about Talisa."
Her mother gasps. "You were alone with her? You know how it looks, Alicent. This could be disastrous.”
"I know, but I was careful that nobody saw us. I had to confront her," Alicent insisted.
Her mother shook her head in disapproval. "Rhaenyra is not worth ruining your reputation over. Besides, I have news for you…Your father just made a deal with Viserys tonight. Rhaenyra will be proposing to Dany."
Alicent's eyes widened in shock. "What? When?"
"Tonight," Her mother said firmly. "And you need to be there to support your sister and Rhaenyra.”
Alicent's anger only grew at the mention of Rhaenyra's name. "Dany should marry someone else, like Lord Lannister. Not Rhaenyra."
But then her mother whispered in her ear, "Otto just made a deal with Viserys tonight. Rhaenyra will be proposing to Dany."
Alicent's eyes widened in shock. "What? When?"
"Tonight," Her mother said firmly. "And you need to be there to support your sister. It's time for you to set aside your petty jealousies, Alicent. Rhaenyra is a fine match for Dany, and you know it."
Alicent's nostrils flared in anger. "Petty jealousies? She's a typical alpha who does not know the meaning of love."
Her mother gave her a stern look. "You're being unfair, Alicent. And you're not the only one who knows Rhaenyra. I've spoken to many people who vouch for her character."
Alicent crossed her arms, looking away. "I don't care what other people say. I don't want Dany to get hurt."
"Believe me, I want the best for your sister," her mother said gently, reaching out to touch her arm. "And Rhaenyra is the best. You'll see that eventually."
Alicent didn't reply, just glared at the crowd in front of them. The music swelled and the dancers twirled around the ballroom. She could see Rhaenyra laughing with some nobleman across the room, looking every bit the confident and charming woman that she was. Alicent felt a pang of envy and anger and turned away..
Her mother sighed, knowing that this was going to take more time and convincing than she had hoped. She squeezed Alicent's arm and walked away, confused as to what was going on in her eldest daughter’s head.

The ballroom was filled with excitement and anticipation as the guests mingled and danced to the melodic tunes of the orchestra. Rhaenyra had brought Lady Dany to the center of the ballroom, and everyone's attention was now on them.
Alicent watched from the sidelines, her heart beating fast with a mixture of anger, envy, and confusion. Just moments ago, Rhaenyra had been proclaiming her feelings for Alicent in the garden, and now she was proposing to Dany in front of everyone. It felt like a betrayal, and Alicent couldn't help but feel a twinge of hate towards her sister.
Rhaenyra spoke softly, her voice carrying through the room. "Lady Dany, I pledge to you my loyalty and my love. I vow to be there for you always, to support you in your duties and to cherish you in our private moments. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
As Rhaenyra spoke, her voice filled with emotion and conviction, Alicent couldn't help but feel a pang of envy towards Dany.
But then the anger returned, and Alicent's internal struggle continued. How could Rhaenyra propose to Dany after everything that had just happened? Alicent couldn't help but think that Rhaenyra was just playing with everyone's emotions.
Dany's eyes shone with tears as she took Rhaenyra's hands in hers. "Yes, my lady. I accept your proposal with all my heart.”
Dany's face lit up as she said yes to Rhaenyra's proposal, and the room erupted with applause and cheers. Alicent plastered a smile on her face, but inside, she was seething. She couldn't bear the thought of Rhaenyra being with Dany, of being happy with someone other than herself.
As the celebration continued, Alicent couldn't help but feel lost and confused. She didn't know what she wanted anymore, and her feelings towards Rhaenyra were all over the place. She needed to sort out her emotions, but for now, all she could do was watch as Rhaenyra and Dany danced together, their future together on full display for all to see.

Two Weeks Later
Alicent has not spoken to Rhaenyra since that night and continues to to reject all of her suitors, with the most annoyingly stubborn one being Ser Criston who keeps coming back to ask to court her.
Alicent is with her sister at Talisa's modiste shop getting her dress fitted. Alicent is watching Talisa with careful eyes as she dresses Dany. She can tell that Talisa is upset about this union but nobody else is paying attention except for her.
The modiste shop was a beautiful and spacious room filled with dresses and fabrics of all colors and textures. It was the most exclusive shop in the city, and only the wealthiest could afford its services. Alicent stood near the window, looking outside as she watched the busy streets below. Dany was standing beside her, admiring the dress that Talisa had just fitted for her.
Alicent could sense the tension between Talisa and her sister, and she knew that she was not the only one who was not happy about the wedding. As Talisa's youngest started crying, she took this as an opportunity to approach Talisa.
“I can see how unhappy you are with this union.” Alicent whispers softly. Talisa tenses up, very guarded but then schools her features and continues tending to her son.
“You know Lady Hightower, I can see the same longing in your eyes that are in mine. I know that you're in love with her, Alicent." Talisa says casually, focusing on changing her son’s diaper.
Alicent's face turned red, and she looked away. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Deny all you want, but do not dain to judge me when you are living in your own glass house.” Talisa says while shushing her and Rhaenyra’s son.
Alicent takes a deep breath before speaking. "You are mistaken."
Talisa straightens up, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I know what I see. And what I see is a woman who is in love with her own sister’s future mate, but who is too afraid to admit it to herself or anyone else."
Alicent retorts. "I just refuse to be with an alpha like Rhaenyra. And I refuse to let her ruin my life like she's ruined yours."
Talisa's eyes widen in surprise. "What are you talking about?"
“I know you were in love with her too. Everyone knows the rumors that she used you and tossed you aside like a worn-out gown." Alicent widens her eyes and looks shocked at her own words. “Talisa, I’m so sorry I don't know what came over me I-”
Talisa's face darkens with anger and she cuts Alicent off. "How dare you speak of things you know nothing about, Alicent," she says in an angry whisper so nobody can hear them. "Yes, Rhaenyra and I had a connection, but it was never anything like what you're suggesting. And she never used me or tossed me aside like some disposable object."
Alicent is stunned into silence. She can’t believe Talisa actually admitted to her and Rhaenyra being together. Talisa looks around quietly before continuing.
Talisa steps closer, her eyes flashing with fury. "You're so blinded by your own bitterness and envy that you can't see the truth," she spits. "Rhaenyra is a good alpha who was broken by her brother's death. She's not perfect, but she's never used anyone. And as for me, I made my own choices. I married someone I thought I could love and be happy with, betraying Rhaenyra in the process. We were in love and she offered to run away with me. I refused and married another out of fear of leaving behind the comforts of high society. It was only years later that we reconnected after her brother died. She was destroyed.”
Alicent looks with wide eyes and feels immense shame for her actions toward both Talisa and Rhaenyra.
“And as for my love for her, it will always be there. And I will also be supportive of her endeavors. In fact, I was initially supportive of her choice in you.” Talisa says and Alicent widens her eyes in surprise. “I thought that since you both know grief so intimately you would understand each other but I was severely mistaken.”
“Talisa, it is my apology for how I’ve treated you.” Alicent says in a soft, sincere voice. Talisa softens slightly but is still guarded.
“I will not speak of this again and I trust you will not run off to gossip about this because I will deny every word.” Talisa says as she picks up her son and puts him back in his crib. Alicent nods softly.
“Alicent my dear, please come help your sister find the best shoes to match her gown.” Alicent’s mother calls from the other room and Alicent leaves. She feels foolish for how she has acted and how blind with jealousy she has been.
She forced herself to villainize Rhaenyra when in reality, Rhaenyra has been nothing but kind and loving to her and it is her own wounds that hindered their potential love.

Alicent's emotions overwhelm her as she struggles with her inner turmoil. The thought of marrying anyone, of becoming someone's property, sends shivers down her spine. Yet, she cannot ignore her feelings for Rhaenyra. They consume her every waking moment, driving her mad with desire. Unable to resist any longer, she sneaks away in her carriage to see Rhaenyra, hoping to find some sort of solace.
As she waits for Rhaenyra to arrive, her heart races with anticipation and fear. What if Rhaenyra doesn't feel the same way? What if she's just a fleeting fancy to Rhaenyra, nothing more than a passing whim?
When Rhaenyra's butler finally arrives to fetch her, Alicent's palms sweat with nervousness. As she lays eyes on Rhaenyra, her heart skips a beat. Rhaenyra looks more beautiful than ever before, and Alicent can't help but feel drawn to her.
"I have something to tell you," Alicent says, her voice barely above a whisper. The tension in the air is palpable as Rhaenyra waits for her to speak, her eyes searching Alicent's face for any sign of what's to come.
Both are suspended in time, but they know that the next few words will change the trajectory of their futures for good.
