Chapter 2
Rhaenyra's heart raced as she heard Alicent's words. She knew they needed to talk, but it was too dangerous to do it out in the open. Rhaenyra had seen the looks people gave them when they were together, and she didn't want to risk any rumors starting. She grabbed Alicent's arm and quickly pulled her towards the house. Alicent stumbled along behind her, clearly unnerved.
As they entered the house, Rhaenyra led Alicent to her bedroom, hoping that they would be safe there. She closed the door behind them and turned to face Alicent. The tension in the room was palpable, and Rhaenyra could feel her heart pounding in her chest.
Alicent looked around the room nervously, clearly uncomfortable. Rhaenyra could see the fear in her eyes, and she knew that she needed to reassure her. She took a step closer to Alicent and gently placed her hand on her arm.
"Don't worry, Alicent," Rhaenyra said softly. "No one will find us here."
Alicent looked up at her, her eyes searching Rhaenyra's face. Rhaenyra could see the fear and uncertainty in them, and she knew that she needed to make her feel safe.
"What's the matter, Alicent?" Rhaenyra asks, taking a step closer to her.
"This was a mistake," Alicent says, her voice trembling slightly. "I shouldn't have come here."
Rhaenyra reaches out to take her hand, but Alicent pulls away. Rhaenyra can see the conflict in her eyes and knows that Alicent is struggling with her feelings for her.
"Please, Alicent," Rhaenyra says softly, stepping closer once again. "I know you have something to tell me. Do not run away."
Alicent takes a deep breath and looks up at Rhaenyra. She can see the desire in her eyes and feels herself being drawn closer to her. She shudders as Rhaenyra cups her cheeks and lifts her chin up. She shudders at the touch.
They stand there, caught up in the intensity of the moment. Alicent can feel Rhaenyra's warmth and strength, and she knows that she's always been drawn to her. She wants to tell her how she feels, but the words won't come.
Alicent can feel her heart beating wildly in her chest as Rhaenyra pulls her in closer. Her breath catches in her throat as she feels Rhaenyra's lips press against hers in a tender, but urgent, kiss.
For a moment, Alicent is stunned, unsure of what to do. But then, she feels something deep within her stir, an overwhelming desire that she can't ignore. She tentatively kisses Rhaenyra back, her hands trembling as they find their way to Rhaenyra's waist.
Rhaenyra deepens the kiss, her tongue seeking entrance to Alicent's mouth. Alicent moans softly as she opens up to her, her body responding to Rhaenyra's touch in ways she never knew possible. The kiss is filled with a raw passion that leaves them both breathless, lost in the moment.
Finally, Rhaenyra pulls away, her eyes blazing with desire. Alicent is left panting, her body still buzzing with the electric energy of the kiss. She looks up at Rhaenyra, her eyes wide with wonder and confusion.
"I...I've never..." Alicent stammers, unable to find the words to express the flood of emotions she's feeling. She’s never even kissed someone, not even her first love as it was improper in this time to do so as an omega.
Rhaenyra smiles gently, taking Alicent's hand in hers. "It's okay," she whispers. "I'll teach you." And with that, she pulls Alicent back into another passionate kiss.
Alicent's eyes widen in surprise, but she doesn't pull away. Instead, she leans into the kiss and wraps her arms around Rhaenyra's neck.
Alicent feels her body jolt alive with excitement. As they kiss, they both know that they're crossing a line that can't be undone. But at that moment, they don't care. They're lost in the passion and desire that has been building between them.
Alicent can feel Rhaenyra’s alpha pheromones begin to cloud the room. Rhaeynra pushes her passionately until Alicent’s back is pressed up against the bedroom wall. Alicent moans softly at the sensation. She is flooded with emotions right now. She knows this is so wrong but she doesn’t care. She has been proper her whole life and for what?
Now she understands passion and she understands the draw to be intimate with someone in a way she never truly understood. She feels a fire forming in her belly and her omega is howling to be set free.
They break apart slightly, Alicent’s chest heaving and their eyes meeting. Both of their eyes have turned to their wolf shades, red for an alpha and purple for an omega. Alicent has no idea how to control the omega inside her, nor does she want to. She can tell Rhaenyra isn’t faring much better.
Rhaenyra tilts Alicent’s head slightly and starts pressing hard kissing on her neck. Alicent gasps at this. She knows that there are things you only do as mates, but she doesn’t truly know the full details. Mothers tend to hide the details from their daughters until their wedding day. And now, Alicent is starting to understand why…to avoid the temptation of committing such acts.
Rhaenyra presses against her harder and it’s like something has snapped between them. Rhaenyra pulls Alicent’s petite waist against her and sucks hard on Alicent’s neck. Alicent can’t believe the feelings that she is experiencing, so unfamiliar yet she doesn’t want them to ever stop.
She knows that they should talk but she doesn’t want to do anything but continue this. Rhaenyra moves lower and begins kissing the exposed parts of her breasts. Alicent gasps and pulls Rhaenyra up from her angle. She is nervous but excited but also nervous at the fact that she is so excited. She feels like a different person right now.
Yes, she wanted to tell Rhaenyra that she has fallen in love with her but she didn’t expect this to happen. She doesn’t even fully know what this entails.
“Rhaenyra..” Alicent says in between heavy breaths. “I..”
“Do you want to stop?” Rhaenyra asks in a soft voice before kissing Alicent’s neck again. Alicent feels overwhelmed in the best ways possible.
“No..” Alicent squeaks out, enjoying the ministrations that Rhaenyra was performing with her mouth.
Suddenly, Rhaenyra lifts Alicent up and Alicent squeaks out. Rhaenyra carries her to the bed and gently lays her down. Alicent looks up at her with wide eyes.
“Can I undo the laces of your dress?” Rhaenyra asks breathlessly and Alicent nods with surprised eyes. She can smell the future Duchess’ pheromones and it feels like what she has heard a heat will feel like. All she knows of a heat is that it helps a woman produce heirs but they go mad with desire for their alpha. Alicent wonders if she’s in heat right now.
She stares silently, breathing heavily as Rhaenrya undoes the intricacies of her dress and slowly pulls it off of her, followed by her corset. Along the way, she kisses all the bare skin available to her. Alicent chooses to shut her eyes and enjoy what is happening rather than overthinking.
Rhaenyra settles on top of her and kisses her on the lips again. Alicent wraps her arms around Rhaenyra’s neck. She is completely bare.
“Will you take your clothes off as well for this?” Alicent asks curiously, her body turned on and her mind trying to catch up. Rhaenyra looks at her curiously.
“Alicent, you do understand what the marital act is?” Rhaenyra asks softly, her eyes gleaming with adoration.
“I um..I know it is performed on the wedding night. And some do it before but it is improper to do so. And I know of heats…to..to produce an heir. But I do not wish to produce an heir. I just wish to continue doing this with you.” Alicent stutters out awkwardly. Rhaenyra kisses her soundly.
“Are you sure? This is your virtue.” Rhaenyra asks gently.
“I am sure, your Grace.” Alicent says in a whisper before kissing Rhaenyra again.
“Then I am sure as well.” Rhaenyra says gently. “As for heirs, there is a tea I can get for you to help ensure that does not occur. But even so, there is always a risk.”
Alicent looks confused but nods and kisses Rhaenyra softly.
“If you do not like what is happening or if it does not feel good, I need you to tell me.” Rhaenyra says and Alicent nods.
Rhaenyra takes off her shirt and pants followed by her undergarments. Alicent’s eyes widen when she sees the part of Rhaenyra that makes her an alpha.
“Oh..” Alicent mumbles out dumbly and Rhaenyra laughs.
Rhaenyra kisses her again before moving down her body and sucking on her nipples. Alicent moans out loudly, surprised at the sounds she is making. She feels really hot all over.
Rhaenyra continues her ministrations for what seems like forever until Alicent cannot take it anymore and pulls Rhaenyra up to kiss her firmly. She feels like she’s going mad. Is this what her heat feels like?
Rhaenyra angles her body on top of her and moves to push inside of her.
“Are you sure this is okay, Alicent?” Rhaenyra says breathlessly. Alicent nods before Rhaenyra pushes slowly inside her.
Alicent squeaks out. It is certainly painful as Rhaenyra slowly pumps her hips and is more and more inside her. Alicent hisses out gently and clutches onto Rhaenyra’s back, surely causing scratch marks. Once Rhaenyra is fully in, Alicent does not feel the same pain and it begins to feel good..insanely full but her omega feels satiated.
Rhaenyra groans and Alicent feels even more turned on hearing the sounds that Rhaenyra is making. Being with Alicent is making Rhaenyra feel amazing and that fact alone is turning Alicent on so much.
Rhaenyra pushes her head in between Alicent’s neck and shoulder blade and begins rutting into Alicent at gentle, but steady pace. Alicent moans out as the bed starts to creak with every pump of Rhaenyra’s hips. Alicent holds onto Rhaenyra tightly and feels herself begin to build up to something she’s never experienced before.
“Rhaenyra..” Alicent moans out, her back arching slightly.
“Alicent..” Rhaenyra groans out and begins rutting into her harder and faster. The quickness of her movements is all it takes for Alicent to begin moaning incredibly loud and feel her body tense with such unprecedented pleasure.
Rhaenyra tenses shortly after as well, finishing inside her and slowly removing herself and settling next to her.
Both of them continue breathing very heavy. Rhaenyra pulls Alicent to lay on top of her, cuddling into her.
“I’m in love with you.” Rhaenyra says it softly, like it’s a secret. Alicent opens her eyes and looks fondly at her.
“I love you too, Rhaenyra.” Alicent says genuinely and lifts up slightly to kiss her.
“Did I hurt you?” Rhaenyra asks worriedly. “It was your first time.”
Alicent shakes her head. “No..it was painful for only a moment.” Alicent reassures her. “You were very gentle with me.”
Rhaenyra smiles and they lay for a few moments, Rhaenyra lovingly rubbing Alicent’s bare back with her fingers.
Alicent closes her eyes and her smile soon dissipates. She just gave her virtue to Rhaenyra. The butler and the rest of Rhaenyra’s staff saw her enter the household. They surely heard what happened in here and the alpha and omega pheromones might even be permeating throughout the house.
She was in such a frenzy after talking to Talisa that she came her with little thought about what she was doing. She just needed to tell Rhaenyra of her feelings and now reality is crashing down on her. She doesn’t ever want to wed. Ever. And Rhaenyra? Rhaenyra needs to wed. It is her duty to do so.
Alicent begins to panic.
“What’s wrong?” Rhaenyra says quietly. “Listen, I know this is untraditional how this happened. But I plan to go to your father and inform him that I am asking for your hand and we will have the contracts drawn up and we can wed. There will be no scandal, rest assured.”
Alicent quickly leaps from the bed as if she’s been burned and hurries to put her corset and dress back on.
“I am so foolish.” Alicent mumbles as she gets dressed. Rhaenrya quickly puts on a robe and hurries over to Alicent.
“What is wrong?” Rhaenyra cups her cheeks. “Do you regret giving your virtue to me? Did you feel pressured?”
“No, no. I wanted this Rhaenyra. I just wasn’t thinking straight.” Alicent says worriedly. “I shouldn’t have even came over here. I do not ever want to wed. And it was selfish of me to come here and progress my love when I cannot give you what you need..which is a mate.”
Rhaenyra looks at her with surprised eyes and takes a step back.
“You..you’re serious?” Rhaenyra says in shock.
Alicent stands across from Rhaenyra, her face wrought with turmoil. "This was a mistake," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "I can't be with you, Rhaenyra. I need my freedom."
"What are you talking about?" Rhaenyra demanded, her eyes flashing with anger. "You can be as free as you want with me. Marriage does not have the shackles that you presume it to be.”
Alicent shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. "It's not about that. After my first love died, I made a promise to myself that I would never put myself in a position of pain like that again. Loving you will only trap me, both in the eyes of society and in my own heart. I can't bear the thought of being seen as your property, or to love you more and more each day when it will inevitably end in pain."
Rhaenyra's eyes flashed with anger. "How can you say that? I've never treated you like property and never will. I promise to always respect you and give you the freedom to be yourself."
"It's not about how you treat me, Rhaenyra," Alicent said, her voice shaking with emotion. "It's about how society sees us. I can't bear to be tied down like that. I need my freedom."
"You can still have your freedom!" Rhaenyra protested. "We can make our own rules. We can live our lives on our own terms."
"But what about when you're gone?" Alicent cried. "What about when you're not here anymore and I'm left alone, trapped in my own heart?"
Rhaenyra's face softened. "I understand your fears, Alicent," she said softly. "But please don't shut me out. We can work through this together. I love you, and I don't want to lose you."
Alicent wiped away her tears. "I love you too, Rhaenyra," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I can;t take that risk. I just can’t handle the pain."
Rhaenyra pulled her close and kissed her gently. "I'll do everything in my power to protect you and keep you safe," she whispered. "I won't let anything hurt you, I promise."
Rhaenyra's face hardened as she took in Alicent's words. "So, that's it then? You're just going to give up on us?" she said, her voice tinged with bitterness. "We could have had something special, something real. But you're just going to walk away from it because you're afraid of being hurt again?"
Alicent's eyes darted around nervously. "I'm sorry, Rhaenyra. I just can't do it," she said, her voice shaking with emotion. "I can't take the risk of getting hurt again."
Rhaenyra's eyes filled with tears as she watched Alicent turn and run out the door. "I can't believe you're doing this," she called out after her. "You're throwing away something amazing because you're too scared to take a chance on it. Now we're both sentenced to a lifetime of pain because of your choices."
Alicent paused for a moment, looking back at Rhaenyra with a pained expression. "I'm sorry," she said again before turning and running out of the house.
Rhaenyra sank down onto the bed. She had never felt so heartbroken in her life. She had thought she had found someone who truly understood her, someone who she could spend the rest of her life with. But now it seemed that was all gone, lost to the fear and uncertainty that had always plagued Alicent.
Alicent's words kept echoing through her mind, taunting her with the painful truth. She had never really understood the depth of Alicent's fears and doubts, and now it seemed that it was too late to do anything about it. All she could do now was try to pick up the pieces of her shattered heart and move on, even though she knew that it would never be the same again.
As she lay there, lost in her thoughts, Rhaenyra realized that maybe she had been too blinded by love to see the truth. Maybe she had been so desperate for someone to understand her that she had ignored all the warning signs, all the doubts and fears that Alicent had always carried with her. Maybe she had been too naive to see that love wasn't always enough to overcome the obstacles that life throws in our way.
But it was too late now, and all Rhaenyra could do was try to find a way to heal her broken heart and move on.
///
Alicent slipped into the house, trying to make as little noise as possible. She had to be careful, if any of the staff caught her coming in at this hour, it would be the end of her. She made her way to her chamber and locked the door behind her, sighing in relief.
"Prepare a bath for me," she instructed the staff as she took off her cloak and tossed it to the ground. She needed to soak away the night's events, to wash away the scent of Rhaenyra from her skin.
As the omega staff bustled around, pouring hot water into the tub, Alicent sank down onto the edge of her bed and buried her face in her hands. What had she done? She had known the risks, known that being with Rhaenyra was dangerous, but she had gone ahead and done it anyway.
As she stepped into the steaming water, her tears began to fall. She had been so foolish, so reckless. If anyone found out what had happened, she would be ruined. Her family would disown her, society would shun her. And for what? A few stolen moments of happiness with Rhaenyra?
She stayed in the bath for what felt like hours, letting the water wash away her tears and her shame. She sank down into the water, letting out a deep sigh. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew one thing for certain: she could never let herself be that foolish again.
As Alicent sat in the bath, her thoughts consumed her. She couldn't shake off the guilt she felt for betraying her sister, Dany. How could she have done something so foolish and selfish? She had always been the responsible one, the one who did what was expected of her. But now she had thrown it all away for a chance at something she knew deep down was impossible.
If Rhaenyra did end up marrying Dany, then she would be marrying into the family in just two weeks. The thought made her feel sick to her stomach. She had betrayed her sister's trust and now would have to face her at the wedding, pretending like nothing had ever happened.
But it wasn't just the guilt that weighed heavily on Alicent's mind. It was the realization that she felt so much more for Rhaenyra than she had ever felt for her first love. Rhaenyra felt like a true love, a soulmate, whereas her first love had been nothing more than puppy love. The thought of losing Rhaenyra, of never being able to be with her, was unbearable.
Yet, at the same time, she couldn't bring herself to take that risk. The pain she had felt after losing her first love had been too much to bear, and she couldn't go through that again. It was better to leave things as they were now, before they became too complicated, before she became too attached and couldn't survive if something were to happen.
Later in the night, As Alicent lay in her bed, she couldn't help but think back to the night she spent with Rhaenyra. Despite the guilt and fear she felt, she couldn't deny the intense feelings of passion and love that had consumed her in that moment.
But she knew that it could never happen again. She couldn't risk everything for a love that could never be. She had made her choice and now she had to live with the consequences.
As she stared up at the ceiling, tears streaming down her face, she realized just how much she missed Rhaenyra. She missed the way she laughed, the way she looked at her, the way she made her feel.
But it was all gone now. Lost to the fear and uncertainty that had always plagued her. And even though she knew it was for the best, it still hurt like hell.
She knew she would never be able to love anyone the way she loved Rhaenyra. But she also knew that she could never be with her. The thought of it made her heart ache with a pain she had never felt before.
As she curled up in her bed, pulling the covers tight around her, she made a promise to herself that she would never let herself be hurt like this again.
And so, with a heavy heart and tears in her eyes, she closed her eyes and tried to forget about all things related to the future Duchess of Driftmark.
///
Alicent's heart raced as she heard the knock on the door. She had been up all night, tossing and turning, replaying the events of the previous night over and over again in her mind. And now, as she saw Rhaenyra standing outside her door, she felt a sense of panic wash over her.
The house staff is behind her, confused as to why Alicent scurried to the door and answered. It’s not customary for family members to answer the door. The staff looks at each other curiously and knowingly but won’t dare to say anything.
"Alicent," Rhaenyra is clearly surprised to see Alicent answering the door but schools her featuress, her voice cold and distant. "Is your father here? I need to speak with him."
Alicent swallowed hard, trying to keep her nerves under control. "Yes, he's upstairs," she managed to say, stepping aside to let Rhaenyra in.
Rhaenyra strode past her without a word, her eyes fixed straight ahead. Alicent could feel the tension in the air, and she knew that something was wrong. She followed Rhaenyra up the stairs, her heart pounding in her chest.
As they approached her father’s study, Rhaenyra paused and turned to face Alicent. "Don't worry, I won't tell him anything," she said, her voice low and cold. "But I need to speak with him alone. And I need you to leave."
Alicent's heart sank as she heard Rhaenyra's words. Without a word, Alicent turned and walked away, her mind racing with fear and anxiety.
Rhaenyra made her way to Otto's study and politely knocks before entering. "Lord Hightower" she said, her voice formal "I come bearing unfortunate news. I have come to inform you that I will not be marrying Dany."
Otto's eyes widened in shock. "What is the meaning of this?" he demanded, his face turning red with anger.
Rhaenyra remained calm, her expression unreadable. "I cannot go through with this marriage, but I wish for our agreement about the lands to still remain true." she said simply.
Otto slammed his fist down onto his desk. "This is unacceptable! Do you have any idea what kind of disgrace this will bring to our family? Do you not care about the damage this will cause?"
Rhaenyra stood her ground. "I understand the consequences of my actions, Lord Hightower," she said. "But I have a proposal that may be of interest to you. I have connections with Khal Drogo, the visiting King of Dothraki. If I set up an alliance with him, it could benefit your family greatly…even more so than a marriage to me."
Otto's anger seemed to subside at the mention of a potential alliance. "Go on," he said, leaning back in his chair.
Rhaenyra explained her plan in detail, and Otto listened intently. After a moment of consideration, he nodded his head. "Very well," he said finally. "I will consider this alliance with Khal Drogo. But do not think that this absolves you of your previous actions, Rhaenyra. You may have been able to skate through life as the second son of a Duke, but now as the heir to Driftmark, you have duties and your impropriety will no longer stand in society. Consider this a final warning from House Hightower.”
“I understand, my Lord, and I thank you for your acceptance. Shall I tell Dany myself?” Rhaenyra says formally. She feels immense guilt but she cannot marry a Hightower and be so close to Alicent forever. She will never move on. She may never move on as it is.
“No. I shall do so myself. All that is need of you is to set up this alliance.” Otto says firmly and Rhaenyra agrees. They exchange formalities before Rhaenyra exists the study.
After exiting Otto's study, Rhaenyra walked briskly down the hallway, her thoughts consumed with the weight of her actions. She was so lost in thought that she didn't hear Alicent following behind her until she was pulled into the patio room and the door was closed behind them.
"What did my father say?" Alicent demanded, her eyes searching Rhaenyra's face for any sign of what had transpired in the study.
Rhaenyra hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I ended the engagement with Dany.”
Alicent's heart sank at the news. She had hoped that Rhaenyra would have kept their love a secret and married Dany for the betterment of the family, even if it meant suffering in silence. "Why would you do that? You know how important it is for both of our families to keep this alliance?”
Rhaenyra's eyes met Alicent's, and she spoke with a coldness that made Alicent's heart ache. "I can't do it, Alicent. I can't marry your sister after I’ve taken your virtue, after I learned the braille of your body and the taste of your skin. I cannot produce heirs with her and look her in the eyes while I wish it was you.” Rhaenyra said in a angry whisper.
Alicent looks at her with wide eyes, shocked at the crassness and realness of the words. She stutters for a moment but chooses to ignore their time together yesterday and focus on her sister in this equation.
"But what about Dany?" Alicent pleaded. "She'll be devastated. And what about our family's reputation?"
"Wouldn’t it be worse for your sister to marry someone who could never truly love her? Besides, I've made arrangements for Dany to marry the visiting King Khal Drogo of Dothraki. We went to Cambridge together and I know him to be a fine, respectable alpha." Rhaenyra said firmly. "She'll be taken care of, and your family will benefit greatly from this new alliance. It's the best outcome for everyone."
"I understand," Alicent whispered in a resigned tone. "I'll go talk to my sister and try to explain things to her."
Rhaenyra nodded, her own heart heavy with the weight of what she had done. "I'll go make the arrangements with the king. It's the least I can do for your family."
With that, they parted ways, both feeling the weight of their actions and the pain of their impossible love.
///
Alicent paced back and forth in her bedroom, her mind racing with worry. With all the drama of the last two days, she did not even think about the tea that Rhaenyra mentioned to ensure she was not with child. Alicent didn't know if she was ready to face Rhaenyra again, especially now that she had ended the engagement with Dany.
But she could not trust anyone else to get her this tea without ruining her reputation. Alicent wonders who else she could ask when she remembers one person who knows of these secrets who can help her. Alicent quickly dresses and heads off in her carriage with one intent in mind.
///
Alicent steps into the modiste shop and sees Talisa in the back. It is quite late in the evening so she is assuming no more customers will be coming.
Alicent approached Talisa tentatively, noticing the way she was hunched over a piece of fabric, sewing a fine stitch with intense concentration. She waited until Talisa glanced up, acknowledging her presence with a slight nod of her head, before speaking.
"Talisa, I...I need a favor," Alicent began hesitantly, wringing her hands nervously.
Talisa paused in her work, her expression curious as she looked up at Alicent. "What kind of favor?" she asked, her tone guarded.
"I need your help getting something," Alicent said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Um..well this is of the delicate variety.. It is a kind of tea..”
Talisa's eyes widened in surprise at this. “You did not..” Talisa says slowly, realization dawning on her. She aggressively works on the stitch she is working on, mumbling to herself.
Alicent just stands there silent, unsure of what to say. She wonders if coming to her was a mistake.
“Alicent, why can’t you ask Rhaenyra for this?” Talisa asks in a angry whisper. She’s more frustrated that Alicent did not heed her warning. Talisa is a few years older than her and knows better but the high society omegas are not taught anything about conceiving a child. She is also annoyed at Rhaenyra for not telling her of sleeping with Alicent. They are no longer romantic but Rhaenyra comes to see her soon in secret once a week and they chat as old friends would.
“I…Rhaenyra and I are not speaking.” Alicent says quietly. Talisa looks like she is furious at Rhaenyra so Alicent continues. “At my behest.” At those words, Talisa just looks at Alicent confused.
Talisa hesitated for a moment, her expression troubled. Finally, she sighed again and set aside her sewing. "Fine," she said. "I will get this for you. But when did the…coupling occur?”
“Why would you ask such a thing?” Alicent asks in a nervous whisper, looking around at the empty shop to make sure yet again that nowhere is here.
“Rhaenyra should have explained this to you. No actually, your mother should have.” Talisa says with a shake of her head. “The tea only works if it’s been less than 24 hours.”
Alicent’s eyes widen in shock and worry. Talisa looks at her and sighs, realizing it must be too late.
“I take it, it has been longer than 24 hours.” Talisa says quietly, shaking her head and turning back to her work.
“I..I cannot have a child out of wedlock..I cannot..” Alicent starts to stutter and panic. Fear floods her system.
“Rhaenyra would marry you in a second.” Talisa says empathetically, putting down her stitching and comforting the girl. Alicent may be a thorn in her side but she feels protective of the girl for some reason unknown to her.
“I cannot marry Rhaenyra.” Alicent says nervously.
“She is no longer marrying your sister, I hear.” Talisa says softly and confused. “So what is the issue?”
Alicent's voice trembled as she took a deep breath. "I can't marry Rhaenyra," she whispered. "I made a vow after the love of my life died. I promised him on his deathbed that I would never marry, and I can't break that promise. It's the only thing I have left of him." Her eyes filled with tears as she continued. "And I can't bear the thought of being anyone's property, of having to submit to another's will. I want to be free, to make my own choices." She paused, her voice cracking. "But most of all, I can't hurt my sister. I just can't do it." She lowered her head, her heart heavy with sorrow.
“Alicent, it was unfair of your former fiancee to put such a burden on you. You are young and deserve to love and be loved. You deserve to find your true mate.” Talisa says genuinely, feeling more pity for the girl in front of her every moment.
“I can’t. I refuse. I am a woman of my word.” Alicent says firmly, wiping her tears away.
“Very well.” Talisa says quietly. “Well what if you are with child?”
Alicent's heart sank at the question. She stared at Talisa, her eyes wide with fear and confusion.
"Is that truly possible?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Talisa nodded solemnly. "It is always a possibility when you are intimate with someone," she said gently.
Alicent felt her knees go weak. She had been so caught up in her love for Rhaenyra that she had never even considered the consequences of their actions. Now, the thought of being pregnant was overwhelming. She had never even thought about what she would do if she were to become pregnant.
"What should I do?" Alicent asked, her voice shaking.
Talisa placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You will have to wait and see," she said. "If you were not in heat, the chances are less likely but you will have to wait to see if you receive your blood.”
Alicent nodded, tears welling up in her eyes with the weight of the situation still heavy on her heart. And now with the possibility of a child, the stakes were even higher.
Alicent bids farewell to Talisa, who promises to keep her secret. She steps out of the modiste shop and into the cool night air, she couldn't help but wonder what other dangers lay ahead for her.

The grand hall of the Red Keep was bustling with activity as the lords and ladies of the Seven Kingdoms gathered for the royal luncheon. The smell of roasted meats and spices filled the air, and the clinking of silverware against plates mixed with the chatter of guests.
In one corner of the room, the Lady Dany Hightower was seated beside Khal Drogo, the powerful leader of the Dothraki. They were deep in conversation, their heads bent together in earnest discussion.
Meanwhile, Alicent stood by the refreshment table, sipping a glass of wine as she watched the guests mingle. She couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as she saw Dany and Khal together. She had heard the rumors that he had requested to court Dany, and she knew that her sister's happiness was at stake.
As she was lost in thought, Lady Ygritte, one of the younger ladies of the court, approached her with a sly grin. "Alicent," she said, "I heard about the broken engagement between Rhaenyra and your sister. And now she is being courted by a King! What happened?"
Alicent plastered a polite smile on her face. "I'm afraid I cannot divulge the details," she said, trying to keep her tone neutral.
"Oh, come now," Lady Ygritte pressed. "You can tell me. I promise I won't tell a soul."
Alicent resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "I'm sorry, Lady Ygritte," she said firmly. "It is not my place to share private family matters with others. It was a mutual decision."
Once Lady Ygritte wandered off to find more suitable gossip partners. Alicent found her eyes wandering aimlessly around the room. She caught a glimpse of Rhaenyra sitting with Lady Margaery, laughing and conversing like nothing was wrong. A pang of jealousy shot through her heart but she quickly looked away, unwilling to dwell on those emotions.
As she was lost in her thoughts, she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was her mother looking at her with concern etched on her face. "Alicent, my dear, are you feeling alright?" she asked.
Alicent forced a small smile and replied, "Yes, Mother. I am perfectly fine. Just lost in thought."
Her mother gave her a scrutinizing look before nodding her head. "Well, if you ever need to talk about anything, you know I am here for you."
Alicent thanked her mother before turning away, feeling the weight of her worries intensifying. She couldn't bring herself to tell her mother the truth, that she was struggling with the possibility of being pregnant with Rhaenyra's child. The thought of it made her feel sick to her stomach, and she didn't know what to do.
She took a deep breath and tried to push those thoughts to the back of her mind. She knew she couldn't afford to let anyone know about this, especially not her mother. It would only lead to more scandal and drama, something she couldn't bear to face.

The ball continued on in the night and everyone began to pair to up to dance. Ser Criston kept asking Alicent to dance, which she refused. Instead, she watched on as Rhaenyra and Margaery danced together.
“Lady Margaery, you dance divinely.” Rhaenyra complimented her with a smile as they twirled around the ballroom floor.
“Thank you, Your Grace. The pleasure is all mine.” Margaery replied, returning the smile.
“Tell me, Lady Margaery,” Rhaenyra said, “What sort of family would you like to have?”
Margaery paused, considering the question before answering, “I would like a family that is strong and loyal, yet also one that encourages individuality and free thinking. A family that is willing to challenge each other and help each other grow, Your Grace.”
Rhaenyra couldn't help but feel impressed with Margaery's response. “I see that you and eye see eye to eye on this. You would make a fine wife.”
“Thank you, Your Grace. I would do my best to make you happy and to support you in all your endeavors,” Margaery replied, a twinkle in her eye.
As the music ended, Rhaenyra thanked Margaery for the dance and excused herself to go fetch a drink. She walked over to the refreshment table, and as she poured herself a glass of wine, her thoughts drifted back to Alicent. She wondered where she was and if she was thinking of her as well.
But she quickly shook her head, trying to push the thoughts away. She didn't want to ruin her night with negative emotions. Instead, she decided to focus on the present and enjoy the company of her friends.
As Alicent watched Rhaenyra walk over to the refreshment table, she felt a knot form in her stomach. What if Rhaenyra came over to talk to her? What if she noticed something was wrong? Alicent took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She knew she had to put on a brave face and pretend like everything was fine, even if it wasn't.
The ball continued on, and as the night wore on, Alicent couldn't help but worry about the possibility of being pregnant. She didn't know what she would do if she was. She couldn't marry Rhaenyra, but she couldn't bear to be apart from her child either. The thought made her heart heavy, and she excused herself to go outside and get some fresh air.
Alicent felt a shiver run down her spine as she stepped out into the cool night air. She took a deep breath and tried to clear her mind, but before she knew it, Rhaenyra had followed her out.
"What do you want?" Alicent asked, her voice shaking slightly.
"I want to know the truth," Rhaenyra said, her eyes narrowing. "Talisa told me that you may be with child. Is that true?"
Alicent felt a wave of panic wash over her. "I-I don't know," she stammered. "I just..I never had the tea you spoke of.”
Rhaenyra looks surprised. She forgot about the tea after everything that occurred. “You should have came to me.” Rhaenyra says softly.
"I didn't want to worry you," Alicent said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“If this is true, then we still have a bond, whether we like it or not.” Rhaenyra says quietly. “I will not let your reputation be ruined. My offer to marry you is still on the table.”
"I don't want your offer, Rhaenyra," Alicent said, her voice strained with frustration. "And I don't want your pity. I can take care of myself."
Rhaenyra sighed, her face showing a mix of concern and frustration. "I'm not trying to pity you, Alicent. I care about you. And if you are with child, then it's my responsibility to make things right."
Alicent shook her head, her eyes flashing with anger. "Why do you keep bringing up marriage? I've already told you I can't marry you."
"Because I love you," Rhaenyra said, her voice softening. "And I want to take care of you and our child, if there is a child."
Alicent shook her head again, feeling overwhelmed with conflicting emotions. "I can't think about that right now. And what about Talisa? Are you still seeing her?"
Rhaenyra's eyes narrowed, and she took a step closer to Alicent. "What does that have to do with anything?"
Alicent clenched her fists, trying to suppress the jealousy she felt. "You are still intimate with her?"
Rhaenyra's face twisted with annoyance. "No, we are no longer romantic. That…we had not been together for years..except for one time. I know you’ve spoken to Talisa about this, she told me. I know you know that her son Aegon is mine.”
Alicent's eyes widened in surprise at Rhaenyra's admission. "Aegon is yours?" she asked, incredulous. "I didn't know that for certain. Talisa never confirmed it."
Rhaenyra nodded solemnly. "Yes, he is mine," she said. "And it's a secret we must keep at all costs. Can you imagine the scandal if people found out? Talisa would lose her shop and be shunned by her husband and society. So I have to see Aegon in secret.”
Alicent couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy at the thought of Rhaenyra having a child with someone else. "And what about Talisa?" she asked, her voice laced with bitterness. "Do you still love her?"
Rhaenyra's face softened slightly. "I visit her to see my son, Alicent," she said. "That's all. But once, yes, I loved her very much."
Alicent remained silent for a moment, her mind racing with all of the new information she had just learned. She couldn't help but feel hurt and jealous, but at the same time, a part of her couldn't help but be relieved that there was nothing between Rhaenyra and Talisa anymore.
Finally, she spoke. "I don't want to talk about this anymore," she said firmly. "I need time to think. Please, just give me some space." And with that, she turned and walked away, leaving Rhaenyra standing alone in the gardens.
Rhaenyra reached out and pulled Alicent back towards her. "No, we can't just ignore this," she said firmly. "We need to figure out what we're going to do. Whether or not you're with child, we have to make a plan."
Alicent pulled away from her again, her voice strained. "There's nothing to figure out until I know if I'm actually carrying your pup or not," she said, her hands shaking slightly. "And in the meantime, you should focus on courting Margaery. She seems to understand you and support you in a way that I never could."
Rhaenyra looked at her with a mixture of sadness and frustration. "You know I don't want her," she said softly. "I want you. I've always wanted you."
Alicent looked away, unable to meet her gaze. "I know," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But we can't keep doing this to each other. It's not fair to either of us."
Rhaenyra sighed heavily, running a hand through her hair. "Fine," she said finally. "If that's what you wish.”
Alicent didn't respond, simply turning and walking away, leaving Rhaenyra standing alone in the gardens once again.
///
Alicent was seated in the patio room, her fingers anxiously tapping on the armrests of her chair. It had been three weeks since the luncheon and she still didn't know if she was with child or not. Every day that passed, she grew more and more concerned. She tried to push the worry to the back of her mind, but it was always there, gnawing at her.
Her sister Dany entered the room, interrupting her thoughts. "Mother, did you hear that Rhaenyra invited Lady Margaery to the Targaryen vacation home last night?" Dany asked, a gossipy tone clear in her voice.
Dany was upset at the engagement ending but she fell head over heels in love with Khal almost immediately. Their nuptials are set for next week.
Alicent's ears perked up at the mention of Rhaenyra's name. She couldn't help but interject, "That seems like a big step."
Dany looked at Alicent with a smile. "I think so too. I predict that Rhaenyra will propose to Lady Margaery soon. After all, the engagement season will soon come to a close."
Alicent's heart sank at the news. She tried to pretend that she didn't care, but she knew that her mother would see right through her facade. She couldn't bear the thought of Rhaenyra with someone else, especially not Lady Margaery, who seemed to have a genuine connection with Rhaenyra.
Her mother, who had been listening to the conversation with interest, spoke up. "Alicent, dear, is something bothering you?"
Alicent shook her head, trying to hide her inner turmoil. "No, nothing's bothering me. I just find it interesting that Rhaenyra would propose to Lady Margaery so soon."
But her mother made a mental note of Alicent's strange behavior. She knew that something was bothering her daughter, but she didn't press the issue. For now, all they could do was wait and see what the future held.
///
The Targaryen vacation home was a stunning mansion that spanned acres of lush green land, surrounded by tall trees that provided shade on sunny days. The mansion itself was grand, with marble floors and ornate decor that gave off an air of luxury and elegance. The grounds were dotted with beautiful gardens and fountains, with a lake at the far end of the property that shimmered in the sunlight.
As Rhaenyra walked along the edge of the lake with Lady Margaery, the two women were lost in conversation, laughing and flirting. Rhaenyra was dressed in a simple yet elegant gown, her hair tied back in a loose braid. Lady Margaery was equally lovely in a flowing dress of light blue, her hair cascading down her back in soft waves.
As they walked, Rhaenyra couldn't help but feel a twinge of longing for Alicent. She missed her fiercely and worried about her constantly, especially since she had heard the rumors about a possible pregnancy. But for now, she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on the woman in front of her.
"So, my lady, tell me, what kind of future do you envision for yourself?" Lady Margaery asked, looking at Rhaenyra with a curious glint in her eyes.
Rhaenyra thought for a moment before answering. "I've always wanted a family, of course. Children to carry on the Targaryen name. But beyond that, I want someone who challenges me, who understands me, and who supports me in all my endeavors."
Lady Margaery nodded thoughtfully. "I believe I could be that person for you, my lady. I understand you well, and I think we could have a happy life together."
Rhaenyra smiled, feeling a flutter in her chest. "I think you're right. We could be happy together."
As they continued their walk, Rhaenyra's mind drifted back to Alicent, and the worry crept back in. But for now, she pushed it aside and enjoyed the company of the lovely Lady Margaery.
Rhaenyra and Margaery had been walking and talking for hours, their conversation ranging from politics to their childhoods. The air was cool and fresh, the leaves rustling in the breeze. As they neared the edge of the lake, Margaery slowed down, and Rhaenyra followed suit. They stood side by side, their eyes fixed on the water.
Margaery turned to Rhaenyra, her eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and desire. "Can I ask you something?" she said, her voice low and sultry.
Rhaenyra's heart skipped a beat at the tone of Margaery's voice. "Of course," she replied, her voice husky with anticipation.
Margaery took a step closer to Rhaenyra and tilted her head up to meet her gaze. "I know it's improper, but may I ask for a kiss?" she said, her eyes locked onto Rhaenyra's.
Rhaenyra felt a jolt of desire shoot through her body at the words. She had been thinking about kissing Margaery for hours, imagining what it would be like to feel her lips on hers. But the idea of kissing her before they were engaged went against everything she had been taught. She hesitated for a moment, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts and desires.
Rhaenyra's resolve weakened at Margaery's words, and she felt a surge of heat rush through her body. She had never been one to shy away from passion and excitement, and the thought of exploring that side of her relationship with Margaery was tempting. But at the same time, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was betraying Alicent.
"It's… it's not proper," Rhaenyra said hesitantly. "We're not even engaged yet."
Margaery raised an eyebrow and took Rhaenyra's hand in hers and looked up at her with a soft smile. "I want to be in a marriage of more than just duty, Rhaenyra," she said. "I want passion and love. And I think that if we kiss now, it will only strengthen our bond."
Rhaenyra hesitated for a moment before giving in to her desires. She leaned in and pressed her lips to Margaery's. The kiss was electric, sending shivers down Rhaenyra's spine.
As they pulled away, Rhaenyra's heart was pounding in her chest. She looked into Margaery's eyes, seeing the same desire and passion reflected back at her.
"I can give that to you, my lady.” Rhaenyra says breathlessly.
She feels so conflicted because Margaery is beautiful and she did feel things from the kiss. She would be lying if she said otherwise. But she loves Alicent and her alpha yearns for only Alicent’s touch. She couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that lingered in the back of her mind, reminding her of Alicent and the child that may be growing inside her.
She looks into Margaery's eyes, trying to decipher what the other woman is thinking. Margaery's lips quirk up into a smirk, and Rhaenyra can't help but feel a little intrigued by the other woman's confidence.
"You know," Margaery says, running her fingers along the back of Rhaenyra's neck, "I can tell you're thinking about someone else."
Rhaenyra's eyes widen in surprise. "What makes you say that?"
Margaery shrugs. "It's in the way you kiss me. You're holding back.”
Rhaenyra just stands there speechless.
Margaery smiles knowingly at Rhaenyra's hesitation. "I understand that you have feelings for someone else," she says softly, placing a hand on Rhaenyra's cheek. "But that doesn't mean we can't explore our own connection. I believe our connection can grow with time. I just needed to know that the spark is there. And even from a kiss where you were thinking of another, I can tell we have the potential for a real love…one day.”
Rhaenyra's heart aches at Margaery's words. She wants to believe that they could have something special together, but the guilt of her feelings for Alicent weighs heavily on her. She takes a step back, putting some distance between them.
Rhaenyra gives her a small smile. "You're right. I'm willing to see where this goes, Margaery. I just need to take things slow."
Margaery nods, her eyes shining with excitement. "I can do slow," she says with a wink. "But don't think for a second that I won't be thinking about that kiss every night until the next time we see each other."
Rhaenyra chuckles, feeling a warmth spread through her chest at Margaery's playful tone. Maybe there was something between them after all. Only time would tell.

Dany walked into the large sitting room, where her mother was lounging on a chaise longue, reading a book. "Mother, you won't believe what happened at the vacation home," Dany exclaimed, clearly excited to share some juicy gossip.
"What happened?" Her mother asked, setting her book aside and looking up at her daughter.
"Well at the Targaryen vacation home, apparently Rhaenyra and Lady Margaery were practically attached at the hip the entire time," Dany said, her eyes widening with excitement over fresh gossip.
"Attached at the hip? What do you mean?" Her mother asked, her interest piqued.
"I mean they were always together, walking around the gardens, having private conversations. And I heard some of the servants say they even disappeared behind the trees at one point, and yet no engagement proposal." Dany said, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
As Dany chattered on, Alicent sat quietly in the background, trying her best to appear disinterested. She could feel her heart racing as she listened to the details, her mind consumed by thoughts of what could have happened between Rhaenyra and Lady Margaery. She couldn't help but imagine them kissing behind the trees, their bodies pressed close together, and she felt a pang of jealousy and hurt.
Her mother raised an eyebrow at her daughter. "And what are you insinuating, Dany?"
"Well perhaps Rhaenyra is still caught up on another." Dany said with a mischievous grin.
Alicent's mother chuckled. "Well, we don't know that for certain. And even if she did, it's not really any of our business."
"But Mother, don't you think it's strange that she didn't propose to Lady Margaery while she was there?" Dany asked, looking disappointed.
Her mother simply shrugged. "Perhaps she's taking her time.”
"Who else could there be?" Dany asked, ignoring her mother’s words and looking puzzled.
Her mother sighs. "I don't know, Dany. But it's not our place to speculate or interfere. Let Rhaenyra make her own choices."
As Dany continued to gossip about Rhaenyra and her possible engagement to Lady Margaery, Alicent couldn't help the jealousy that consumed her. She had known deep down that Rhaenyra would have to wed another, but the thought of her kissing someone else, especially someone as beautiful and alluring as Margaery, made her stomach twist.
She tried to keep a composed demeanor but her mother, who had been reading a book in the corner of the room, seemed to sense something was off with her daughter. Alicent's mother was a sharp woman, and had always been perceptive when it came to her children's emotions.
When Dany finally left the room, Alicent's mother turned her attention to her daughter. "Alicent, dear, is something troubling you?" she asked gently, setting her book aside.
Alicent tried to brush off her mother's concern, but her voice caught in her throat. "It's nothing, mother," she managed to say, but even to her own ears, the words sounded hollow.
Her mother gave her a piercing look. "I know you better than that, Alicent. There's something on your mind, and I want you to tell me what it is."
Alicent's heart sank. She knew her mother was perceptive, and she couldn't hide her true feelings from her for long. "I'm fine, really," she insisted, hoping her mother wouldn't press the issue further.
The air in the room suddenly feels heavy as Alicent's mother simply stares at her with a knowing look, her eyes showing a hint of concern. Alicent swallows nervously, knowing that she can't keep the truth from her mother any longer.
“You and Rhaenyra…there is more to this story than we all know.” Alicent’s mother says confidently.
"Rhaenyra and I were once involved," Alicent admits, her voice low. "But we aren’t together and she is free to pursue someone else as her mate.”
Her mother nods thoughtfully, taking a seat beside her. "I see," she says, her eyes fixed on her daughter. "And how do you feel about her now?"
Alicent pauses, considering her answer. "I still love her, mother," she says softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I refuse to marry and become someone’s property."
Her mother nods, understanding in her eyes. "What about the child?" she asks gently.
Alicent's eyes widen in surprise. "How did you know?" she asks, taken aback.
Her mother sighs deeply. "It was an educated guess. You have been ill as of late and your scent is different,” she says cryptically. "So, are you with child?"
Alicent bites her lip, feeling a surge of nerves wash over her. "I don't know yet," she admits. "But if I am, it changes everything."
Her mother nods, her expression sympathetic. "You know what you need to do, my dear," she says gently, placing a hand on Alicent's arm.
Alicent's heart sinks at her mother's words. She had been hoping to avoid this conversation altogether, but she knew it was inevitable. She takes a deep breath and meets her mother's eyes, feeling a sense of shame wash over her.
"When did this happen?" her mother asks, a tinge of disappointment in her voice. "I know I should have told you more about the marital act…but that is something that most mothers do not tell their omega daughters until their wedding night."
Alicent feels her cheeks flush at her mother's words. She had been raised in a sheltered environment, shielded from the harsh realities of the world. But now, faced with the consequences of her actions, she couldn't help but feel foolish.
Her mother continues, her voice firm. "Nonetheless, you will need to wed Rhaenyra if there is a child," she says. "Your father would never allow a child out of wedlock.”
Alicent nods, feeling overwhelmed by the weight of the situation. She knows that her mother is right, but the thought of marrying Rhaenyra fills her with conflicting emotions. She loves Rhaenyra but now she feels as if Rhaenyra would only be marrying her for duty. Not to mention, she would be betraying her promise to never marry after her first love died.
Her mother's tone softens as she places a hand on Alicent's shoulder. "I know this is not what you had envisioned for your future," she says, "but we will support you through this. Nobody will know you are carrying a pup if we have a quick wedding. And who knows, perhaps love will grow between you and Rhaenyra. I will have the maester come in the morning and if you are with child, we shall go see Rhaenyra together. Your father does not need to know."
Alicent's heart sinks as her mother's words sink in. She can feel the blood draining from her face, and she fears she might faint. "Mother," she whispers, "I cannot do this. I cannot face Rhaenyra after what has happened."
Her mother's gaze is unwavering, her tone firm. "You must, my dear. You made a mistake, and now you must face the consequences. We will go to her home tomorrow and tell her what has happened. And if you are carrying a child, we will do what needs to be done. We will not let our family's reputation suffer because of a moment of weakness."
Alicent feels as if the world is spinning around her. The night passes in a blur, and before Alicent knows it, the sun is rising over the horizon. She feels sick to her stomach as she waits for the maester to arrive. She knows that the results of the test will determine the course of her life.
///
The maester arrived early in the morning, his face lined with concern. He was an old man, with wispy grey hair and a kind face that had seen many years of serving the noble houses and knew how to keep secrets. Alicent's mother led him to Alicent's chambers, where Alicent was waiting, her heart hammering in her chest.
The maester greeted Alicent kindly and asked her to lie down on the bed so that he could examine her. Alicent's mother stood by her side, holding her hand as the maester examined her. He asked her questions about her recent health and took her pulse, before finally examining her belly.
As he prodded and poked, Alicent held her breath, praying that he wouldn't find anything. But then the maester's expression changed, and he turned to Alicent's mother with a grave look.
"My lady," he said, "I believe your daughter is with child."
Alicent's mother's eyes widened in shock, but she quickly composed herself. "Thank you, maester," she said. "Please, give us a moment alone."
The maester nodded and left the room, leaving Alicent and her mother alone. Alicent's mother sat down on the edge of the bed and took Alicent's hand in hers.
"You must be strong, my dear," she said, her voice gentle. "We will go to the Targaryen home today and speak with Rhaenyra. We will do what is best for you and the pup."
Alicent felt tears prick at her eyes. She was terrified of facing Rhaenyra, of admitting her feelings to her and facing the consequences. But she knew that she had to do what was right for the child growing inside her.
Alicent feels as if the ground has opened up beneath her. She cannot believe that she is actually pregnant. She feels a surge of guilt and shame, knowing that she has let her family down.
Her mother takes her by the hand and leads her out of the room. "Come," she says, "we must go and speak with Rhaenyra. We cannot delay any longer."
Alicent follows her mother numbly, feeling as if she is in a daze. She knows that this conversation with Rhaenyra will change everything, and she is terrified of what might happen. But she also knows that she cannot run from her mistakes. She must face them, no matter the cost.
///
Together, they made the journey to the Targaryen home. Alicent can tell that Rhaenyra is startled to see Alicent and her mother at her door, but welcomes them inside and leads them to the patio of her home. As they sit down, Alicent's mother wastes no time and gets straight to the point.
Alicent could feel the weight of Rhaenyra's gaze on her as her mother explained the situation. She couldn't bring herself to look at the other woman. Rhaenyra's voice was low and measured as she spoke, but Alicent could sense the undercurrent of tension.
"Rhaenyra, my daughter is with child," she says sternly, her glare fixed on Rhaenyra. "I am infuriated at both of you for a severe lack of judgment but since it has happened, we need to make plans for the wedding as soon as possible Alicent’s scent changes fully.”
Rhaenyra's face pales at the news, but she remains composed. "I understand that this is a difficult situation for all involved," Rhaenyra said, her voice laced with sadness for she knows that Alicent must be beside herself. "But I will do what is necessary to make this right. I will arrange for the wedding as soon as possible."
Alicent's mother breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Your Grace. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation."
Rhaenyra nodded, her eyes still fixed on Alicent. "Is this what you want, Lady Alicent?"
Alicent's heart sank. She knew she couldn't tell the truth, not now, not with everything that was at stake. "Yes, Your Grace," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rhaenyra's gaze lingered on her for a moment longer before she turned to address Alicent's mother.
Alicent and her mother made their way back home in silence. Alicent could feel the weight of Rhaenyra's gaze on her, as if she were burning a hole through her skull. She couldn't shake the feeling of guilt and shame that clung to her, no matter how hard she tried.
As they arrived back at their home, Alicent's mother turned to her. "I know this is difficult for you, my dear," she said, placing a hand on her daughter's arm. "But we will get through this. And who knows, perhaps things will work out for the best."
Alicent forced a smile, knowing that things could never truly work out for the best. She had betrayed the woman she loved, and the guilt would never truly go away.
///
Alicent's mother then stood up, adjusting her dress as she turned to leave the patio. "I'll give you two some privacy," she said, her voice laced with bitterness. "Not that it seems to matter much now."
As Alicent's mother walked away, Rhaenyra turned back to Alicent, a mix of emotions flickering across her face. "Are you okay?" she asked softly, taking a step closer to her.
Alicent nodded, but her eyes were downcast. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Everything is happening so quickly."
Rhaenyra placed a comforting hand on her arm. "I understand," she said. "And I want you to know that I don't want you to feel like you're being forced into this. If this isn't what you want, then we can find another solution."
Alicent looked up at her, her eyes glistening with tears. "I love you," she said, her voice breaking. "That's never wavered. But...I never wanted to get married like this. I made a promise to my first love, and now it feels like I'm betraying him."
Rhaenyra's expression softened, and she pulled Alicent into a tight embrace. "I know," she said, her voice gentle. "But we can make this work. We can build a life together, and you'll see that it can be beautiful. Just give it a chance."
Alicent buried her face in Rhaenyra's shoulder, tears streaming down her face. She knew that Rhaenyra was right, but the thought of betraying her first love and being forced into a marriage was overwhelming. But for the sake of the child growing inside her, she knew that she had to try.
Rhaenyra wrapped her arms around Alicent, holding her close. "I'm here for you, Alicent," she whispered. "No matter what happens, I will always love you."
Alicent's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I’m so sorry for how I’ve acted with you, so hot and cold. I never meant to hurt you. I just...I didn't expect to feel the way I do about you. But my promise still stands. I can't break it."
Rhaenyra looks to the ground and contemplates asking for more details about Alicent’s first love. It seems to be a tough subject.
Alicent's eyes fill with tears as she begins to tell the story of her first love. "We knew each other as children. He was the lord of a neighboring town and we would meet every summer when my family would visit our vacation home."
Rhaenyra listens attentively, sensing the weight of the story before it was even fully told.
Alicent continues, her voice trembling, "I truly believed I loved him and I think I did..if only for the kindness of his soul. But then he went off to war, and when he returned, he was gravely ill. On his deathbed, he made me promise that I would never wed, that I would wait for him to get better and that I would never give my heart to anyone else."
Rhaenyra places a comforting hand on Alicent's shoulder, "I'm so sorry, Alicent. I had no idea."
Alicent looks up at Rhaenyra, her eyes still filled with tears. "I know that you didn't, but it doesn't change anything. I made that promise to him, and I can't break it."
Rhaenyra takes a deep breath, "I understand how you feel, Alicent. But please know that I would never want you to feel trapped in a marriage that you don't want. If you don't want to go through with this, I will call off the wedding."
Alicent looks at Rhaenyra with a mixture of gratitude and sadness. "I appreciate that, Rhaenyra. But the truth is, I do love you. In reality, I love you more than I ever loved him…which makes me feel so guilty most days.”
Rhaenyra places a gentle hand on Alicent's shoulder, her expression sympathetic. "I understand why you made that promise," she says softly, "but to deny yourself the chance for love and happiness is not fair. Your first love would not want that for you."
Alicent looks up at Rhaenyra, tears glistening in her eyes. "I know," she whispers. "But the guilt… it feels like a weight I can't shake off."
Rhaenyra takes Alicent's hand in hers. "I'm not asking you to forget him or the promise you made. But I am asking you to consider that it's possible to love again without betraying his memory."
Alicent nods slowly, her thoughts muddled as she considers Rhaenyra's words. After a moment of silence, she speaks up. "I don't know if I'm strong enough," she admits. "To love again and risk losing someone else. To break the promise I made to him."
Rhaenyra gives her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You don't have to do anything you're not ready for," she says. "Just know that I'm here for you, no matter what."
Alicent manages a small smile, feeling a sense of comfort in Rhaenyra's presence. She knows that the road ahead will be filled with challenges, but for the first time in a while, she doesn't feel completely alone.
Rhaenyra leaned forward and took Alicent's hands. "And listen as for your other concerns of marriage, I understand that society is fixed in a way that gives alphas the power in marriage, but I want you to know that I don't see you as property. I see you as my partner and equal, and I want to make sure that you have financial freedom and the ability to pursue your own interests."
Alicent looked at Rhaenyra with tears in her eyes. "I appreciate that so much, Rhaenyra. But I just don't know if it's possible. Society is so rigid, and even if we try to work around it, people will still judge us."
Rhaenyra shook her head. "We can't live our lives according to other people's judgments. We have to do what's right for us. And if that means breaking a few social norms, then so be it. I will do everything in my power to make sure that you feel respected and valued in this marriage."
Alicent's face softened as she listened to Rhaenyra's words. “There just seems to be so much in our way.”
“Alicent, the only thing in our way is ourselves.” Rhaenyra says and cups Alicent’s face, rubbing her cheeks lovingly.
“And what of your firstborn, Aegon?” Alicent asks with baited breath.
“What about him?” Rhaenyra asks with a more guarded tone.
“I would never dream of coming in between you two. But I am worried of your relationship with his mother.” Alicent says slowly. “I cannot be in a marriage when my mate is with another.”
Rhaenyra's expression softens. “Alicent, I would never take Talisa as a mistress. I promise you that. I will be committed to you and only you.”
Alicent's worry and jealousy were not so easily assuaged. "But what if you start to develop feelings for her again? You have a child together, Rhaenyra. It's only natural for emotions to resurface."
Rhaenyra's eyes narrowed. "You think I'm incapable of controlling my own feelings?"
"No, that's not what I meant," Alicent backpedaled. "It's just that…I don't want to feel like I'm competing with Talisa for your affection."
Rhaenyra softened once more, taking Alicent's hands in hers. "Talisa is the mother of my child so yes, she will never not be in my life. But you are to be my life. You will be everything to me. You already are.”
Alicent nods slowly, but her eyes are still filled with worry and jealousy. "I know, Rhaenyra, but it's just that...I can't bear the thought of you being with anyone else, even if it's just to see our son. I fear that she may still hold some sort of power over you, or that you may still have feelings for her."
Rhaenyra takes Alicent's hand in hers, gently rubbing her thumb over the back of it. "Alicent, I know you may not believe me right now, but my heart belongs to you and only you. Talisa and I may have had a history, but that is all it is - history.”
Alicent's shoulders sag with relief, and she leans into Rhaenyra's touch. "I trust you, Rhaenyra, which is not an easy feat for me.”
Rhaenyra cups Alicent's face in her hands, looking deeply into her eyes. "I will never leave you, Alicent. I am all in. I love you.”
Alicent nodded, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. Rhaenyra pulled Alicent close to her and leaned in almost all the way, leaving the space for Alicent to lean in as well if she so pleased.
Alicent smiled softly, her eyes shining with unshed tears. Rhaenyra pulled her close and held her gently, giving her the space to lean in if she wanted to. Alicent took a deep breath and leaned in, resting her forehead against Rhaenyra's. They stayed like that for a few moments, both lost in their own thoughts and feelings.
Rhaenyra speaks with sincerity, looking deeply into Alicent's eyes. "I will support you in every way that I can, and I will do everything in my power to make you happy. I know that we have had our differences and that our marriage may have been born from circumstances that we did not plan, but I promise you that I will be a good mate to you and a good sire to our pup. You have my word."
Alicent feels overwhelmed with emotions as Rhaenyra's words wash over her. Without hesitation, she presses her lips to Rhaenyra's in a shaky kiss, pouring all of her love and gratitude into it. It feels like a deep sigh after holding her breath for so long. As they break the kiss, Alicent looks into Rhaenyra's eyes, a new light shining within them.
“I truly do love you.” Alicent says in a shaky, nervous voice.
“And I you.” Rhaenyra says with a soft smile. They embrace and hold one another for a few moments before Alicent’s mother knocks on the door and says that it’s time for them to depart.
Alicent turns back toward Rhaenyra and smiles tenderly before walking out the door, leaving Rhaenyra with a whirlwind of emotions in her wake. As Rhaenyra remains seated, she can't help but wonder what their future together will hold. Whatever it may be, she knows that she is ready to face it with Alicent by her side.
And after all of this, it seems like yet again the Hightowers and Targaryens will once again be the talk of the town this engagement season.
