though I could not stop for Death
Itachi lunged for her, she felt his hand yank her forward - but not before a slice of heat pierced her chest. The wagtail landed on his shoulder as Itachi's eyes flew wide in horror. Yuri watched the wagtail. Red eyes gleamed, the specter of a reaper appeared again, but larger, looming over them all by at least a head.
Yuri locked her eyes on the shadows under that black hood and felt her pulse slow, felt Itachi's grip, his grief, fade from her awareness.
There was only the specter. There was only Death.
"You know me?" A voice that wasn't a voice but an absence questioned.
She didn't.
She couldn't -
Her voice echoed, reflecting off of surfaces she couldn't perceive.
"I don't. I don't remember you. But I remember that I should."
There was no hurry here, she thought. She could take her time to understand what most needed to be said. Someone was waiting for her, elsewhere. Death waited for her here.
"I remember wanting to die. I remember...making a wish."
