The Case of the Plot Hole
Browbeat, Protectorate Ward of Brockton Bay, found himself suddenly awake. Which was strange because he really should be dead. The last thing the self biokenetic remembered was an Endbringer tail flattening him as he tried to drag an out of town cape to a healer. Then pain and a whole lot of nothing.
Looking around, he found himself siting on a floating patch of stone. There was some sort of spotlight shinning down from above and a fancy chair right in the center. However, other than a few food wrappers and loose sheets of paper, he appeared to be completly alone. It was honestly kind of creepy.
His building panic attack was interrupted by a floating ball of light...that was pushing a broom? Having nothing left to lose, the Ward cleared his throat. "Um, excuse me. Where am I?"
The ball of light dropped it's broom before bouncing around. Then, somehow, it spoke! Sure, it sounded like a fifty plus year old cleaning woman from television, but it still spoke. "Oh, I didn't realize that they had sent you in here already! I was trying to clean the place up a bit first. I'm sorry my dear. Just give me a moment, and I'll be able to talk."
Floating over the broom, the light began to zoom around the room, cleaning up all the trash he had seen before in an instant. Throwing the broom into the surrounding shadows, the ball of light came before him. "Sorry about that, we're dealing with a labor shortage right now. I'm Martha and I was sent to give you the news. Sorry child, but I'm afraid you've shuffled off the mortal coil."
Remembering his last moments, the teen shrugged. "Yes, I get that. Um, I'm just confused about this place. Am I in Heaven? Hell?"
Martha the glowing ball shook side to side. "A reasonable concern, but no. You died before your potential could truly be realized. Due to your proximity to a...ah...key figure in the Multiverse, (yes that should do it) your soul was sent here. This is a waypoint where various pantheons of Gods and Goddesses take mortals like yourself and offer them a chance to be reborn and complete some sort of epic quest."
Eyes widening, Browbeat smiled. "Okay, dying sucked but being a Hero on an epic quest would be awesome! Are you going to be sending me on my way? Do I get to save a princess or fight a dragon then?"
Flashing pink, Martha dipped. "Oh no, I'm just a cleaner. I was sent because, well, they are having a bit of a debate as to what pantheon is going to have to take your case."
Blinking, Browbeat could only reply, "HAVE to take my case?"
The light balls glow blush got even brighter. "Well, you are from Earth Bet, you know. It doesn't have the best reputation and a few of the big names who were due a champion are trying to pass and the lesser groups are fighting it. They should have everything straightened out in a couple of hours."
Collapsing on his ass, the former Ward could only stare.
Bobbing in place, the light balls headed towards the shadows. "Don't worry for now, I'll just go get you some tea. But hey, listen! If worst comes to worst, they are always looking for more High Calorie Pizza Making Heroes! You'll be fine!"
With that, Browbeat was left alone with his thoughts.
