Prologue

The year xx32, the 19th day of December

In war, people aren't always what they seem to be.

Some would appear to be as if they're bloodthirsty trigger happy maniacs, while others fearful in what they need to do or from what they're faced with, or they might appear to be protective of something or someone, determined to keep themselves or maybe just the other living at all costs, some might look as if they've just lost everything, and they just might have, while others look as if they've just gained a victory no matter how minor it was.

Enemies and allies alike, they're all just people, after all, human, some more selfish or selfless than others, but all still human.

Some might have been given a choice in if they've served or not, while others might have been forced to do so from their potential, or just because the place they had hailed from needed as many hands as they can get no matter how small those hands might've been.

War is something that could bring out the darker side of people, such as greed in what they can make off of the less fortunate, or it could bring out their greater side, a purpose some would call it, as either way they could see an opportunity and take it, just for different purposes.

It all depends on the circumstances of which they do after what they see and the actions they take that could label them as good or bad

Some mask that darker side of them that manifests during the war, some embrace it, then there are the ones that are scared of what they've become or can become and try to hide from that side of themselves that seems to haunt them in their sleep, some learn to balance that part of them as they know that even that darker, perhaps even cruel, side is still very much them just as much as they are a loving friend, a parent, a sibling, a child, or even a grandparent.

War doesn't define people, but it can change them, especially in the way they think and view the world, seeing as you may, and if you've met, or meet, a war veteran with imperfections don't stare and make a fuss over their visible scars, because those matter little in a sense to the ones that you can't see, the ones that still bleed, that will forever bleed as they can't heal in the normal way an injury does, and don't go saying how they came out lucky and such, because they know, and they either curse themselves every day for it or they thank the god(s) they believe in for the miracle that they were granted, or maybe they don't believe in a God or Gods at all, and just think of it as fate, a curse maybe, or what is meant to be by chance, but whatever they might think, do be kind, even if it's a simple smile their way, a nod, or a hello, and good day.

This here is my story, and all I ask is to not judge as it isn't your place to do so, but I want you to be open-minded to what's to come, look underneath the underneath, as the saying goes, though I have to say that this won't exactly be a happy story as there will be hardships at times and you might just want to quit partway through reading it, I won't blame you for it, of course, cause who in their right mind would want to read about something so peculiar as my life as the Toad Gallant's daughter.
