Chapter 4

Obito Uchiha had a plan.

It wasn’t a particularly well-thought-out plan, nor was it a good plan by any strategic measure, but it was a plan nonetheless.

Today was Valentine’s Day, and Obito was finally going to confess to Kakashi Hatake.

He had spent hours preparing. He’d snuck into the kitchen at the Uchiha compound (enduring the skeptical looks of his relatives) to bake something himself. The first batch had burned. The second batch had come out strangely gooey. The third batch… well, it wasn’t good, but it was at least edible, and that was the best he could hope for at this point.

The real problem, of course, wasn’t the chocolates—it was Kakashi himself. Because Kakashi, as Obito had learned over the years, was dense when it came to anything that wasn’t a mission. He could predict an enemy’s movements in battle, analyze chakra flow mid-fight, and strategize a dozen different combat outcomes in seconds, but when it came to human emotions?

A lost cause.

But that was fine. That was why Obito had written a letter—short, simple, and to the point. “Kakashi, I like you. A lot. Please accept these chocolates. – Obito.”

It was foolproof. Kakashi had to understand this time.

When he finally spotted Kakashi near the training grounds, his heart nearly leapt out of his chest. Taking a deep breath, he marched up and thrust the box forward. “Here! I made these for you.”

Kakashi blinked at him, then at the box. “Oh. Thanks.”

And then—he just took them.

No reaction. No understanding. No anything. Just a simple ‘thanks’ as if Obito had just handed him mission paperwork instead of his heart on a plate.

Obito stared. “That’s it?”

Kakashi glanced at him, then at the chocolates. “Did you want me to pay you for them?”

Obito nearly choked on air. “No, I don’t—what?!”

Kakashi hummed, as if thinking it over. “Are they safe to eat?”

Yes, they’re safe to eat! I made them for you!”

“Right.” Kakashi nodded, completely missing the point. “Did you have extra or something?”

Obito made a strangled noise. Rin, who had been watching from a distance, covered her mouth to suppress laughter.

“Kakashi,” Obito gritted out, gripping his own hair in frustration. “They’re a Valentine’s gift.”

Kakashi blinked again. “…Oh. You should have said so.”

Obito exhaled slowly, barely resisting the urge to throw himself into a tree. “That’s what I’ve been trying to say.”

Kakashi unwrapped one of the chocolates, inspecting it carefully. “Alright.” He took a bite. “…It’s not bad.”

Obito perked up. “Really?”

Kakashi shrugged. “A little burnt. But it’s edible.”

Obito groaned, debating whether confessing his feelings had been a mistake. Then Kakashi, ever the oblivious genius, added, “Thanks, Obito. This was… nice.”

And just like that, all of Obito’s frustration evaporated.

“…Yeah,” he mumbled, looking away, ears burning. “You’re welcome.”

Rin, watching this disaster unfold, sighed to herself. They were never going to figure this out.
