You Can’t Think When You’re Unconscious

“Kid, you can’t keep doing this to yourself.” A soft voice spoke.

“Hrng.” Amaya let out a soft groan.

Her eyes fluttered open, barely able to take in the image of the white haired sensei, Mizuki wasn’t it? She should remember, he was her teacher after all. And yet, she had honestly stopped paying attention after…

“No way, do you really think anyone could actually like her? I only hang around her ‘cause my mom pities her.”

“Oh ew.”

“That’s so lame.”

Even as his voice rang in her head she really couldn’t muster any strength to do anything. He knelt beside her, two fingers pressed against her neck as he let out a soft sigh.

“Not dead. But she should go see med.” He muttered softly, gently picking her up.

---

She shot up in bed- it wasn’t her bed though. It was much too clean to be her place. Looking about she slowly got up- still in her clothes from the day, her gear neatly arranged on a nearby table. She had quickly grabbed it, shaking fingers managing to loop belts and tie knots as she leaned against the wall for support.

“Oh, you finally woke up.” A voice hummed.

“Y-yeah, I woke up.” She squeaked out, eyes instinctively going to the floor.

“That’s good. I need to make sure all of my students are in good shape.” He hummed, gently placing his hand on her head.

She turned away, looking to the wall as she stood quietly.

“I made you breakfast.” He spoke softly, getting her to turn back to him.

“Thank you.” She spoke softly, following him towards the breakfast table.

She was quiet, her face blank as she stared at the food- mostly just poking at it rather than eating.

“Are you sure you don’t want to eat? You didn’t eat yesterday either…” Mizuki’s voice rang through the silence.

“I’m sorry. I’m not that hungry…” She mumbled, before she slowly took a bite.

She put food in her mouth and chewed- but it could hardly be called eating. From the look in her eyes alone it looked more like a puppet putting on a show than an actual human performing a task. She got only a few bites in before she had pushed the plate away, staring at the table.

“Are you sure you’re alright with only eating that much?” He spoke softly.

She almost seemed to not respond, and he gently placed a hand on her back. She abruptly turned towards him, almost in shock as her breathing had quickened.

“It’s alright, it’s just me.”

“R-right… Sorry. I should be heading to class.” She stood, grabbing her bag from the floor as she went for the door, “Thank you for the food Mizuki-sensei.”

“Why the rush? Class doesn’t start for a while now…”

“I like to get a head start on my work.” Amaya left before he could respond, leaving him standing there open mouthed.

He paused, before going to his desk. He had kept some samples of the more interesting kids' work- and he knew she was in that folder. He had been watching her for a while, and she seemed to do nothing but get stronger now that she was away from that Uchiha boy.

‘Ah yes. Here they are.’ He thought as he let out a soft hum, flipping through the small folder. Just as he remembered. She had perfect marks, just like Sasuke. She had skipped out on a few assignments, but from her test scores alone it showed she was an exceptional ninja, although she was easily susceptible to peer pressure- at least from the Uchiha.

“Such a poor little thing.” He hummed.

The soft thunks of kunai hitting the log reverberated throughout the small clearing. Amaya fell back, sitting in the soft grass as the rays from the early sun warmed her skin, eyes closing for only a second- just one second.

“H-hey are you alright?” A voice spoke, which had caused her to bolt upright.

“Perfectly alright!” She stopped mid sentence, confused by the figure in front of her.

He was wearing a white gi with black pants, the headband on his head was framed by sweeping bangs that kept his long hair pinned down to where it brushed against his shoulders. He knelt beside her, a soft look on his face.

“What were you doing here so early?” Rocking back he was on his feet, Amaya slowly taking his outstretched hand as he helped her to her feet.

“Oh… I was just training before class.” She muttered, turning away.

“I am Rock Lee. And typically I train here during the day- that must be why our paths haven’t crossed.”

“Hm. Yeah. Typically I train at the school in the evening so I don’t ever really come here…” She had begun to pull the kunai from the log.

“Ah. The area by the school is almost always clear around then.”

“Mhm I’m sorry for being in your way Lee-senpai.” Amaya spoke with a soft bow as she hurried to leave the clearing.

“Wait! You haven’t told me your name yet.”

“O-oh!” She paused, spinning to face him, “My name’s Amaya. It was a pleasure to meet you, senpai!” she gave a small wave before running off.

Class had been tedious as always, nothing more than answering problems on paper. The tedious task of writing all the answers gave her much insight to why Shikamaru slept through class. The bell rang, and she let out a small sigh, waiting for everyone to leave before walking to Mizuki’s desk.

“What did you wish to see me for..?”

“Your grades have been slipping, so I would like to spend some time after class going over some of the topics you seem to be struggling with.” He slid over a small stack of papers heavily marked in red ink.

“Right… Okay.” She mutters, reluctantly taking a seat.
