Chapter 2
Sai's tight fisted grip on the edge of his sleeve caused his fingers to slice into the tender flesh of his palm, blood oozing from the wounds and dripping onto the grass beside him with soft 'plat's sounding as the crimson liquid drivled down onto the soft green blades below. His head was too clouded with the blunder of emotions that were tearing through him to notice the tears that pooled in his eyes for the first time since he could remember. He glared at Shin through the tears with blurry vision, seething with hatred that threatened to suffocate him in his own skin.
“You can’t honestly be serious, you’re leaving…after everything! I can’t believe you.” Sai lashed out, his voice cracking, his facade breaking under the sheer weight of his grief, his knees threatening to buckle. He had never felt so strongly before, he knew he would have eventually, but he never imagined it to be like this, under these circumstances. Perhaps punishing himself for feeling emotions wasn’t so bad after all, if it meant protecting himself from this agony.
“Did you truly ever expect me to stay with the likes of anyone who allowed Danzo to do what he did to us! And to make things worse…of course, you just had to join them. I had higher hopes for you Sai.” Shin spat, he spoke his name with more disgust than he had ever thought the boy capable of expressing, venom laced throughout his words.
Sai flinched, it cut indescribably deep to hear those words coming from his brother of all people, the only semblance of support he had during their upbringing. He would have thought that Shin of all people would understand him and all he did, evidently not. That was Sai’s mistake.
"You can't seriously be blaming me for falling back on the only support I had after Danzo...and the organization. I had nothing! Do you hear me? Nothing! You can't leave me again. Please! I just got you back." Sai sobbed angrily. He clutched his shirt over his heart, nearly choking on the pain that rose from it. "You can't do this to me." He begged through gritted teeth as the hot, salty tears finally spilled over, stinging his eyes as they poured over the edge.
Shin just stood there, watching him. The only reaction Sai could drag out of him was the sick expression on his face and the furrowing of his brows as he stared down at him as him quivering, hunched over, grasping desperately at his heart, looking up at Shin in complete and utter despair and desperation. "Shin, I- Please, it hurts." He choked through hiccupping sobs.
"And to further prove my point what in hell's name have they done to you. Look at you Sai. You know...I used to look up to you. But seeing you like this is absolutely pathetic and sickening." Shin sneered at the younger teen.
"I loved you more than you deserved, fucker." Shin spat like the words themselves tasted foul.
Sai's eyes widened at Shin's words; his stomach lurched as they processed in his mind. His thoughts came to a halting stop, too stunned that Shin had actually just said that to him, in the sincerest tone he had ever heard him use. His world was shattering around him, and Shin seemed to be mostly unbothered by the damage he was doing to the person who was supposed to be his younger brother.
Shin stared at the pathetic mess in front of him for a few moments, and Sai had still failed to fire back a reply he simply turned and began to walk away.
However, before he could get more than a step away Sai reached out and dragged him back, holding him in place by his sleeve, staining it with his palms which were still smeared in fresh blood. Sai dropped to his knees, his legs finally failing him. Sai wouldn't bring himself to look him in the eyes anymore. Instead, settling his gaze on the ground as his spare hand reached up to grasp that same sleeve he already had a white-knuckled grip on.
He sat there shaking silently for a moment, but just before Shin was about to rip his arm away Sai opened his mouth. "I'll do anything. Please, I just-...Just please don't leave me again...Brother." Sai said, struggling to speak through the lump in his throat. He had never felt this way before. It was comparable to death in his opinion, save for the fact that there was no external wound, this pain was all caused simply because of Shin. He could focus on nothing else aside from just getting him to stay by his side, no matter the cost.
Shin snarled bitterly and ripped his arm away, not even bothering to amuse the younger teen with a response as he trudged away from him, leaving him helpless, broken, and utterly alone for the second time.
Sai slumped, limply falling forward, resting his forehead in the grass, the blades eating into his soft, fair skin. He expected the feeling to crescendo into an unbearable explosion, but alas he was left with nothing. Everything had gone numb, even his physical body. He couldn't even muster up any thoughts. He just sat there, the image of Shin's back as he walked away branded in his mind and behind his eyelids.
And for the 3rd time in his life, Sai felt truly useless.
