Summary
fleshing things out. that's literally it. I guess you could call it a oneshot collection. i am sad. this will be sad. expect nothing short of stomach churning self indulgence because I'm totally not projecting.
Note
I was coming of a nearly lethal dose of stimulants when writing this. I am not currently accepting criticism <3no smut yet, still editing that portion. debating on which one to finish first.

Chapter 3

Sai let out a shiver as Shin rest their hand on his knee, gripping the fabric of his hospital gown before letting their fingers loosen, resting their palm fully flush against his lower thigh, just above the younger’s knee.

‘He looks so fragile, and timid.’ Shin thinks to themselves, their cheeks flushed at the sight of the one they've known since childhood, the one they knew and understood the best. The one that knew and understood them the best.

A breathless sigh pushed past Shin’s lips, a small wheeze could be heard under it but they both paid no mind. They were dying together, so why worry about such petty things. Shin trailed their free hand up to Sai’s downcast face, gripping his chin, forcing him to look at them. They held eye contact for a moment, Sai’s eyes hooded and glazed, yet somehow painfully blank and empty, completely devoid of anything, the look entirely unnatural, giving off somewhat of an uncanny valley effect.

Sai’s head was filled with memories of Danzo, like it always did whenever he found himself in this situation with Shin. He knew how this would go. Just as it had in the past, and just as it will go every other time in the future. He caught himself slipping when he had realized he had been looking at Danzo rather than Shin, the person who actually sat before him. He blinked rapidly a few times before refocusing his eyes, his hand creeping up Shin’s arm before eventually resting on their face, stroking their cheek lovingly. His thumb brushed some of their gray hair strands to the side, clearing the view of their face.

‘See. Nothing like him.’ Sai reassured himself that the one before him most certainly wasn’t Danzo. Sai found himself twirling their hair around his finger. Memories of doing the same to Danzo filled his head. Danzo always made sure to go easy on him if he played along. He shook his head to rid the thoughts from his head before leaning in and kissing Shin deeply.
‘No. Nothing like him at all’ he concluded as his soft lips met Shin’s chapped ones.

He snaked his arms over Shin's shoulders, pressing their chests together as their lips danced something rather melancholic. Sai's chest fluttered at the feeling, a forign sensation. He had long since grown accustomed to the sick knots that twisted his stomach whenever Danzo had touched him like this. Is this what it was supposed to feel like?

A stark contrast to the constricting of his stomach everytime he had found himself like this with Danzo and Ino. He felt his face flush at the soft, gentle, yet assured touches. Maybe this was true kindness. The soft kind of love that left no wounds to tend to, no blooming patchworks of purple and blue, and best of all, no looming nightmares added to the roster. Although it was moot. To finally be allowed to heal just as their stories had begun to near their end was exactly what he had come to expect of this life.

Sai sighed softly into the kiss. Shin--taking this as encouragement-- slid their tongue along the younger’s lower lip, requesting access. Sai could feel himself slipping again, but he welcomed the invasion of their wet muscle in his oral cavity as the visions of Shin rippled into hazy images of Danzo.

Suddenly the scent of Danzo’s musky robes filled his nose, and the fabric of their hospital garb felt all too familiar beneath his touch. Maybe Sai had never really escaped, maybe Danzo had never really been killed. Maybe Sai had just finally snapped and in his mind experiencing these nightmares with his sibling just seemed more bearable. Sai didn't know, regardless he wasn't going to deal with the repercussions if he ceased his participation.

Thankfully, the scene was interrupted by a violent coughing fit on Shin's behalf. Sai tried to hide it but he exhaled in relief. Shin was about to delve several secrets too deep. It's not that he wanted them to know, it just wasn't his place to stop them.
Sai raised his eyebrows in concern, but didn't touch them, irrationally afraid of doing more harm than good. "I'm sorry." He murmured so quietly he was sure they couldn't hear him.

Sai stared blankly at his sibling, watching the thick red blood seeping between the spaces in their fingers. They had suffered together and they truly would die together. What more could Sai ask.
