Listen to your Heart
Summary
“Where is she?” Callie yelled as she ran into the Idaho ER, a panicked look on her face“Arizona? Arizona??”It had been about 12 hours since she had gotten the call. The call that the plane had been found. The call that Meredith, Derek, Christina, and Arizona were all being airlifted to the hospital. The call that Mark and Lexi hadn’t survived.——My take on the plane crash and how it brings Arizona and Callie closer together instead of driving them apart

Chapter 2

The next day Arizona had been moved out of the ICU and into her own room. Her vitals had remained stable and now she, Meredith, Derek, and Christina were in rooms on the same hallway.

“Hello. I’m just here to take a look at your leg make sure everything’s healing properly” the head of orthopedics said as she walked in the room

“Callie can you go get some coffee or something?” Arizona asked, not ready for her wife to see what remained of her left leg- not yet ready to see it herself.

“What? I just got-” Callie replied, confused by her wife’s words

“Can you just go for a few minutes please?” Arizona said firmly

“Okay” Callie said starting putting the pieces together
“I’ll go check on Derek”

Callie gave a quick kiss to Arizona’s forehead and left the room

“So using our good friend the pain scale where would you say your at right now?” The doctor asked as she washed her hands

“7” Arizona admitted softly

“Allright, I’ll talk to the nurses and change some of your dosages around after I leave. How does the leg itself feel?” She asked

“Like you cut it off” Arizona replied, moving her eyes to stare at the wall in front of her

“It wasn’t anyone’s first choice trust me. But the infection had spread and we couldn’t consistently stabilize you. It became our only option” the doctor explained

“Just check it and leave” the blonde said interrupting the doctor

The doctor lifted arizonas blankets and did a quick examination of the residual limb, neither one of them saying anything for a few minutes

“Well it looks as good as can be expected” the doctor started
“it’s still early, but I’m fairly optimistic. I have a few recommendations for orthopedics and prosthetics in Seattle but I’m sure your wife knows some people too”

“She’s already made some calls” Arizona confirmed, still refusing to look at her leg

“Great. Now as far as recovery we need to get you up and moving so I scheduled PT to come up in about an hour to help get that started”

“No” Arizona said

“Dr. Robbins the sooner we start moving the better off you’re going to be. You know this”

“I said no” Arizona said getting angry

“Okay” the doctor begrudgingly agreed
“I’ll delay them until tomorrow but I’m not discharging you until you meet with them”

Arizona just laid back and closed her eyes- wanting to escape this reality for awhile

A bit later Callie was in Derek’s room planning his next surgery, and with no nurses or doctors checking on her Arizona was alone for the first time in what seemed like forever

She went to grab the remote for her tv and looked down at her leg, she still wasn’t used to seeing only one full leg under the blanket and her right leg felt like it had far too much space at the end of the bed

The blonde took a deep breath and slowly started to lift the blanket on her legs up
Her breath stopped for a minute when she saw what remained of her leg, they had cut her leg off about halfway up her thigh and it was currently wrapped in bandages while it healed

She quickly threw the blanket over her legs again and began to quietly sob. Sobbing because her life had forever and permanently changed because of this crash and there was nothing she could do about it.

“So what do you say we get started?” Mason, Arizonas physical therapist, said as he walked in Arizona's room the next morning.

“Not really in the mood” Arizona answered

“If I had a nickel for every patient who told me they weren’t in the mood for PT I could quit my job and retire in Hawaii” he responded
“But alas i don’t so we might as well do something productive here”

“Get out” Arizona replied

“Oh you’re gonna have to try harder than that to get me to leave” he said with a slight laugh
“Come on, Let’s start by getting you sitting on the side of the bed like your about to stand up”

Arizona took a deep breath, thought of seeing Sofia again, and started her session

Her session mainly consisted of standing and sitting a few times then seeing how long she could stand while leaning on mason for support.

Callie came in just as Arizona sat down in her wheelchair, her blanket back over her leg, and quickly agreed to push Arizona around the floor for a brief change of scenery

“Yes mom I’m fine. I don’t want to talk about it right now. No you don’t need to come to Idaho. Yes Callie is here. Because she’s my wife mom. That’s fine you can come to Seattle. They won’t let me out of here for another few days. The day I’m back in our apartment you can come visit. For as long as you want. Yes I mean it mom. Dad too. You know what the doctor just walked in I have to go. I love you too. Okay bye”

“Oh my god” Arizona said rolling her eyes and throwing Callie’s phone on the bed- her phone having been destroyed in the crash

“Good phone call I take it?” Callie asked half joking

“I told her she could come stay with us when we get home”

“You’re her daughter, she just wants to take sure you’re okay” Callie said

“I just don’t need her watching and analyzing my every move right now”

“It’ll be okay” Callie promised as they heard a knock on the door

“How are you feeling Robbins?” Miranda Bailey asked as she walked in

“I feel like I’m going to punch the next person who asks me that question” Arizona said, frustrated with being asked that question 30000 times a day

“Well allright then” Bailey said
“Look I just wanted to let you both know that Lexie and Marks body’s were recovered and are being flown to Seattle. The funeral is being planned for next week”

A kind of silence fell over the room

“Thanks for letting us know” Callie said after a minute, Arizona just sitting there in her bed, once again trying to escape the reality she found herself in

“I also wanted to let you know that they’ve agreed to discharge all of you”

For a brief moment Arizona felt like smiling, excited by the idea of finally getting out of there

“However, they only discharged you and Derek on the agreement that you spend a few more days under observation at Seattle pres”

“What about Meredith and Christina?” Calllie asked

“They’ve been cleared but the injuries you and Derek sustained were more serious” Bailey answered

“How are we getting back?” Arizona asked, realizing for the first time that it most likely meant another plane ride, her body tensing at the thought.

“We’ve arranged a plane and the doctors here have agreed to sedate all of you for the duration of the flight”

“You’ll be there?” The blonde asked softly, looking up at her wife

“I’m not leaving your side” Callie promised, Arizona taking a deep breath

“Then let’s go home”
