Chapter 1

“Where is she?” Callie yelled as she ran into the Idaho ER, a panicked look on her face
“Arizona? Arizona??”

It had been about 12 hours since she had gotten the call. The call that the plane had been found. The call that Meredith, Derek, Christina, and Arizona were all being airlifted to the hospital. The call that Mark and Lexi hadn’t survived.

“Bed 4, she got out of surgery about an hour ago” the nurse said, Callie running off before anything else could be said

“Oh my god” She whispered as she threw back the curtain and saw her wife lying there. Arizona was alive but barely conscious and had several bruises and cuts all over her body.

“Callie?” Arizona mumbled slowly, making sure her wife was really there

“Yeah it’s me” Callie said moving to the side of the bed and taking her wife’s hand
“I’m right here”

“Where’s Sofia?” Arizona said slowly, struggling to stay awake

“Sofias fine. She’s in Seattle with my dad” Callie assured her while holding back tears

Arizona nodded and her eyes closed as she fell back asleep, the anesthesia still wearing off

Callie leaned forward and kissed her wife on the forehead, her sense of relief unimaginable

“How is she?” Callie asked wiping another tear as the doctor walked up

“She’s stable which is good- Still a bit dehydrated so we’re giving her fluids. She has a significant number of cuts and bruises but only three required stitches and her CT is clear” the doctor started before taking a deep breath
“However- When she came in our main concern was her left leg. There was a long deep cut that had become infected and unfortunately we had no choice but to amputate”

Callie looked at her wife’s legs, realizing for the first time that only one could be seen beneath the blankets

“Does she know?” Callie asked after a moment

“We told her it was a possibility before she went into surgery, but given the extreme exhaustion, dehydration, and hunger she may not remember” the doctor said honestly

“Is there anything I can-” Callie started

“You can be here with your wife Dr. Torres” the doctor answered quickly
“You guys have been apart long enough”

He put arizonas chart back as Callie sank into the chair next to Arizona’s bed.

It wasn’t long before she started to cry, every emotion she had been holding in since she got the call that the plane had been found coming out at once.

“Hey, you’re awake” Callie said putting down her coffee as Arizona started to stir the next afternoon. It had been about 13 hours since Callie got there and Arizona was just now waking up
“How do you feel?”

“How’s everybody else?” Arizona mumbled, ignoring Callie’s question even though she was clearly in pain

“Meredith and Christina both have concussions but they’ll be okay. Dereks hand is crushed but I think I’ll be able to fix it” she answered

Arizona nodded again and there was a few seconds of silence before the blonde spoke again
“They cut off my leg didn’t they?”

“I’m so sorry” Callie confirmed, a tear forming in her eye as she took arizonas hand, interlacing their fingers
“You’re gonna be okay though. Your vitals are stable and they removed all the infection”

“because they cut off my leg” Arizona interrupted, no longer looking at her wife

“There was no other choice, I read through your chart while you were sleeping. If they didn’t amputate you would have died” Callie said

“They cut my leg off” Arizona repeated, talking to no one in particular

“You’ll get through this” Callie assured her
“We’ll get you the best doctors and-”

“You’re the best doctor Callie” Arizona interrupted
“You’re the best orthopedic surgeon in Seattle, but even you can’t give me my leg back”

They were then interrupted by the doctor walking up to them

“How are we feeling?” He asked

“Fantastic” Arizona replied sarcastically
“When can I go home?”

“We want to keep you all here for a few more days atleast” the doctor answered

“No I need to go home, I have a daughter, I need to see my daughter” Arizona replied somewhat sternly

“I promise we’ll get you to her as soon as possible, but you’re in no condition to travel right now” the doctor retorted

“I need to see my daughter” Arizona repeated more assertively, the pain in her voice clear

“Hey hey it’s okay” Callie said squeezing Arizona’s hand
“We’ll FaceTime Sofia once she wakes up from her nap. I promise”

Arizona nodded in agreement, calming slightly down at the idea of getting to FaceTime her daughter

“Can I get you anything to eat in the meantime?” The doctor asked

“Steak and a nice bottle of wine would be great” Arizona said sarcastically

“I can do chicken nuggets and grape juice” the doctor replied

“This place sucks” Arizona said with a sigh

“Mommy” Sofia said pointing to the screen when they connected the FaceTime a few hours later

“Hi baby” Arizona said, the relief in her voice palpable

“Mommy” the child repeated a smile on her face, completely melting Arizona’s heart

“I miss you sweet girl” she said trying to hold back tears
“I’m gonna come home soon, okay?”

The one year old smiled and began to show her mother’s the teddy bear she was holding and the princesses on her shirt. They spent a few more minutes on the call, Callie’s dad updating them on Sofia’s daily activities, telling them he would watch Sofia as long as they needed.

After they hung up Arizona started to cry harder then Callie had ever seen the blonde cry before.

“Hey come here” Callie said sitting on her wife’s bed and pulling the blonde into her arms
“She’s okay. Sofias okay, and you’re okay and you’re going to see her as soon as they let you out of this place I promise”

“I didn’t think I would ever see her again” Arizona eventually choked out, the sentiment completely shattering Callie’s heart. She couldn’t find the words to respond so she just continued to hold Arizona as long as she could.
