Mother's worry
Finding his gift was harder than she anticipated. Every Uchiha has an affinity for fire, which is why their bodies run hotter and winter rarely affects them, but she'd learned that Madara also had an inclination for wind, unlike his fellow clansmen.
The only weapons she'd ever seen strapped to him were his katana, kunai, and shuriken, but she'd read about a weapon that could be used by wind style users. The gunbai was an incredibly complicated weapon to master, but she was positive Madara could easily wield it.*
It saddened her that the little information she had on her own husband was through her handmaidens and mother.
"Father!" She ran out the room, screaming for her father's attention. "Father!"
The man raised his brow as she burst into his office, she was panting and sweaty.
"Ah, my daughter's most lady-like moment."
"Sorry, father."
"Is there something you need?"
"Yes!" She exclaimed, hastily making her way to his desk. His eyes widened as she almost slammed into the wooden furniture and plopped down on the cushion in front of him. It took her a second after running down stairs and around the estate in her juunihitoe. "A gunbai!"
"No offence sweetheart but you barely learned to wield a Kunai."
"Not for me, for Madara-sama." She deadpanned, glaring at her father, who nervously laughed in return. "It's his birthday soon."
"Its all of our birthdays soon, what about my gift?"
"No, no, he was born December 24th." She clarified. Her father looked even more confused, he was completely lost. On most days he had no idea what his wife and daughter were running around about. He simply aloud himself to be dragged around and provided them with enough money to keep them happy and buy anything it was they wanted.
"And you want to gift him a gunbai." He mused, scratching his beard. "What does that have to do with me?"
"Can you find the biggest, prettiest, most lethal gunbai there is, please." Her face twisted into the cutest puppy eyes she could muster, it didn't take her father to sigh and give into her request.
"Okay, but I hope my gift is just as elaborate."
"It will be. Thank you, papa!" Her arms wrapped around his neck and she rubbed her cheek on his. He remained stoic and allowed her to practically choke him.
"Oi!" her mother's voice called out from the door. "I told you to find something meaningful, not a weapon."
The 24th rolled around faster than she expected it to...
Katsuki anxiously paced around her room, her eyes set on the wrapped gunbai. It was incredibly heavy for her, it made her wonder if it was appropriate for him, maybe, for some reason, it's measurements weren't good for Madara, perhaps it was too small and heavy.
With each passing minute her nervousness grew, even considering hiding the present and never giving it to him. Thoughts of making a full of herself rose in her mind, looking stupid in front of him again; Memories of their second night together started to flash in her mind once again, a squeal left her lips and she rushed to the gunbai, desperately trying to pick it fast enough to stuff it into something before he arrived.
"What is that?" She paled once the gruff voice reached her ears. Slowly, she turned to look at the boy standing on her door. He looked confused and trying to hold his laughter, as he pointed at the weapon in her hands. The scene was hilarious, seeing his wife in her expensive clothes, as delicate as ever, clearly struggling to get the weapon off the ground.
"It is... a weapon." She nervously chuckled, letting the heavy metal fall to the ground with a thud. "For you."
His initial confusion was replaced with realization then surprise. He was aware of what day it was, he had been born on this day, but it was surprising she even knew. He stepped closer and picked up the fan and inspected it, contrary to his current fan, this one was made of metal covered wood. Heavier than what he was used to, but it was still good; the design surprised him the most, three tomoe on each side of the bottom. It was painted white with black sides, and hanging from the hilt was a little golden moon, surely a reference to her name.
"It's...good enough."
The little hope she had gained dropped like an anchor into deep sea ; she tried to hide it, but her face scrunched into a little pout. Her anxiety had been absolutely correct, he thought the gift was stupid and she'd made a fool of herself once again.
"I-I mean... I like it." Madara Frowned, looking anywhere but at her. "It's useful."
"Happy birth...day." She smiled softly, walking closer to him. "You're seventeen now."
"Yeah."
The little emotion he had showcased was enough to keep her going for a few days, happiness coursed through her veins and excitement mixed with every drop of blood in her body. Resisting the urge to wrap her arms around him, she hastily made her way towards a chest of drawers in a corner of her room.
"Here!"
It was a scroll sheathed with golden strings, another frown came onto the male's face. Hesitantly he took the scroll from her hands.
"Open it when you're home."
All he answered was a curt nod, he turned to the door and left.
"How did it go?"
"He liked it." The smile on her face was hard to miss, excitement was pouring out of her pores. "He just left."
"Yes, I met him on his way out." Her mother stated, walking closer to her and sitting by her side. "Did you two speak much?"
"Not really, he left right after I gave him the painting."
"Painting?"
"Well you said I should give him something meaningful so I gave him a portrait."
"Ah, sounds like you." Kira snickered, earning a huff and a glare from Katsuki.
Despite her outer appearance and excitement, Kira was worried for her daughter. She tried to postpone her wedding as much as she could, she was supposed to marry the boy as soon as her first blood came and she was biologically able to become pregnant, but she used her influence over her husband to hold the marriage off until she was sure her daughter was a little more prepared. She knew for a fact that getting married at 15 could be traumatic and as much as the girl was trying to make it into a fairy-tale there was still an underlying obscurity to the situation. Not only was it extremely common for girls her age to die at child-birth, her husband was emotionally unavailable and the elders were especially insistent on the boy producing a male heir. If for some reason she birthed a baby girl, the infant would be disgraced, and the possibility of the mother would being replaced for someone capable of giving birth to a male was always there.
Within their clan having a daughter was seen as better than a son, but that changed when it was about an heir, having a female ruler had no precedent and she doubted a woman would be able to peacefully lead the clan in this era, when it was a man's world and women were just living in it, cast aside as decorations and pretty, pretty furniture.
"I'm sure he will love it." Kira smile, rubbing her daughters cheek. Katsuki failed to notice the sadness masked behind her mother's happy facade.
