Prologue
At this time of night, the hallways leading to the Hokage's office were nearly empty and the ninjas present weren't paying too close attention to anyone they saw so when a strange ninja passed by them, they paid him no heed.
This ninja therefore soon arrived at the double doors blocking him from the actual office.
He pushed one of them aside then stepped into the room. The blonde man sitting at the desk strewn with papers and books looked up from a document he was reading.
"Um, can I help you?" he asked, out of curtesy. "I hope so, I'm looking for Naruto Uzumaki," the ninja replied.
A more serious tone was evident as he replied, "That would be me." The ninja smirked. "I hoped that was the case." Then there was a puff of smoke and a black-haired man in a grey high collared shirt having a purple rope belt hold the blue cloth around his waist in place appeared. Naruto gasped and dropped the paper.
"It's been a long time since I last saw you, usuratonkachi." "I was told you were dead," he breathed. The man chuckled softly. "Yes, well I wanted you and Konoha by large to think that." Now he stepped closer to the Hokage. Naruto leaned back in his chair as a reflex. "Why are you here?" The man pushed a pile of books aside and sat on its former spot. "I'm here for you."
His hands squeezed the armrests of the chair. "I won't join your merry band of rogues," he answered firmly. Again he chuckled. "I know you won't, you're too noble. No, I want to be with you."
Did he hear correctly?
"Be with me?" he repeated. He only nodded. His eyes narrowed as he demanded, "Why?" The man put a leg up and for the first time since this conversation began, he turned his head. "You were right. All those years ago." "About what?" Black eyes glanced for a split second at blue ones. "Revenge would not make me happy."
Getting no reaction from Naruto, he continued his monologue.
"When I killed Itachi, I didn't experience the peace I thought killing him would bring. Instead, I learned he didn't commit genocide for genocide's sake and that made me look at him in a different light. Also hit me with an epiphany: I sent the only other family member I had to the afterlife. I think I cried on a beach when I realized this."
The joke made the listening Hokage smile.
"Then I thought about you and started missing you and now I'm here, sitting on your desk and pleading with you to take me back. If I had known I'd be doing this, I would have never left Konoha."
Naruto snorted softly while the man gazed somberly at him. Then Naruto met his gaze and sighed. The man frowned at the sound.
"Sasuke, if you said all of that months ago, I would have forgiven you so fast it could be a world record. But...things are different now. Tensions surrounding Akatsuki's intentions are high and I'm Hokage now. The last thing I need in my life is a murderous outlaw."
"I pissed off everyone to get here. That is the people who were after me, the people I was allies with, the people in my home village and even myself. I can't go back to being a rogue and...I don't want to." Then he reached out and put his pale hand on Naruto's. The blondie stiffened from the touch.
"I want to be...gosh, can I even say this? I want to be...your husband." Naruto's mouth dropped open. "You want to marry me?" Sasuke furrowed his eyebrows. "Are you already married?" Naruto shook his head with a lopsided grin. "No. No one will marry a ninja that bares a Uchiha's kids."
Sasuke's eyes contracted. "That wasn't a trick? You actually were?" Now Naruto furrowed his eyebrows. "Why would I lie about that?" "Well, at the time, you was trying everything in your power to bring me home so I thought that was just another sentence said to change my mind...How is the baby?"
"Babies. They're twins." "Okay dobe; how are they." Naruto's thumb brushed against the side of Sasuke's hand as he answered, "The girl has your appearance and your personality. The boy is more like me; hungry, mischievous. But both of them have the Sharingan which makes taking care of them a pain. I can't look them in the eye without getting knocked unconscious." Sasuke smirked. "They sound delightful." Naruto shot him a glare. "You love knowing I'm in pain, huh?" "Sometimes."
Then his expression turned quizzical. "Can I see them?"
Naruto bit his lip. "Sasuke, you're a wanted criminal." "You can make me an unwanted criminal, you're the Hokage after all." "That won't look great on me." "Other Hokages have done worse. Hint, the Uchiha massacre."
"Okay okay, I guess you can see them," Naruto reluctantly relented. Sasuke smirked as he got on his feet. With a flurry of hand signals he was disguised again. Naruto too stood up and they both made for the door.
As they walked down the halls, numerous ninjas greeted them but none saw anything out of the ordinary. They managed to leave the office building and arrive at the living quarters of the Hokage.
