Black (Sasuke x reader one shot) Soulmate au

Everyone had it. A band wrapped around their left ring finger. It was attached to you. The band was not a set colour, changing with the mood of your soulmate. At first, yours was always a dark red.

Burning red, for love. For passion. It was one of the prettiest colours in the world. Oftentimes, you stared at your band for hours on end. That was how captivating it was.

You really hoped that your soulmate's band burned the same red. It truly was beautiful.

But then it stopped burning such a brilliant colour. It turned blue.

Almost like the sky.

It stayed like that. For years. Everyday, your mind would linger on your soulmate. You were worried about your soulmate. Worried about why your band never turned back to the same red. That fear often drove you to confide in your best friend - Sasuke Uchiha! He always listened to your concerns, acknowledging them with a nod of his head.

Without fail, he gave you the same answer every time: "Be patient with him. He will come around. Especially if he meets you!"

Though the words seemed simple, they never failed to put a smile on your face. They served as a reminder to you - whatever your soulmate needed, you would be there for him. It was your job! You loved him!

But there was one thing that you always failed to notice.

Sasuke's band burned a brilliant red.

As much as you wanted to remain hopeful, it was becoming hard. For two more years, your band was still blue. As a ten year old, it was awfully hard to understand. It was a painful reminder of the things you could not fix.

"Mommy?"

Your mother turned around from the stove, "Yes my darling (Y/n)?"

"Why is my band still blue?" Tears were starting to fall down your face, "Why can't I make him better? Why doesn't he love me anymore?"

Your mother never answered.

What was she supposed to say?

His band started to flicker. Looking down, it looked as if it was in a conflict between blue and red. Letting out a sigh, he went to go ask someone he trusted. He was only young. What would he know about soulmate bands?

For a moment, he racked his brain. Who could he ask about this?

Ah! Iruka sensei!

Slipping his shoes on, the young boy slipped out of his home.

Coming to a close near the academy the young boy stepped inside. He made his way down the familiar hallways before coming to a door. He knocked.

Immediately, he was met with a "Come in!"  Gently, the boy pushed the door open.

"Iruka sensei, I have something important that I need to ask you."

Iruka looked curious, motioning for one of his favourite students to continue. Why was Sasuke Uchiha showing up so late? It must have been important.

Sasuke wasted no time, "Why is my band flickering?"

Iruka's face went from one of curiosity, to major concern within seconds.

"Sasuke, when did you notice this?" The Uchiha noted the sense of urgency in his former sensei's voice.

"About ten minutes ago? Why?"

But there was something else that had the sensei's attention. Not the flickering.

The speck of black.

Sobs wracked your entire body, kneeling in front of Sasuke, holding onto his legs. He couldn't go! How could he leave you? Why would he want to leave!

"Please! You can't leave me! Don't go to Orochimaru! Sasuke, don't leave me!"

His heart pulled at every scream. He felt like vomiting at every tear. He hated himself for every sob. But he had to go for the power. It was his only way. The only way for him to get his revenge. He went to stroke your hair with his left hand, only then noticing how blue the band had got. A flicker of panic ran through him. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw how your band had become purple.

More specifically....the colour of worry.

Finally putting two and two together, Sasuke kneeled down to embrace you. You whimpered softly from the contact. His words shocked the living daylights out of you.

"(Y/n)...you are my soulmate."

He grasped you under your chin, pulling it up so your eyes would meet his. Slowly, he leaned down, capturing your lips with his own. A lifetime of emotions conveyed in a single action.

But he never stayed. And neither did you.

You went with him.

Two years had gone and passed.

Once again, you were sitting on the couch of a small cottage.

Alone.

Despite the solitary moment, you didn't mind.

Sasuke was busy and ambitious. You respected that. He had already enlightened you of his plans to kill Orochimaru and move on with you and a few select experiments that he dubbed useful. Karin, Jugo, and Suigetsu.

It was a long while of waiting, but Sasuke and the other three finally returned. Hopping up from your place on the couch, you moved to Sasuke. Automatically, your boyfriend wrapped an arm around your waist. Warmth flooded your heart.

Karin snarled a little but quickly backed off with one look from Sasuke. Regardless of the dark red band on her finger, that didn't stop her from crushing on your man. It didn't matter though. You held the key to Sasuke's heart.

Snuggling into him, you walked out with him, the others trailing behind.

Once again, you both failed to realize the larger speck of black on Sasuke's band, which was only growing larger, covered by his pinky.

The long awaited day finally arrived. Sasuke would confront Itachi.

But there was no way he would risk bringing you. Recently, you had been suffering from some minor headaches. You were constantly feeling sick and drowsy. For your safety, Sasuke ordered you to stay put. The last thing he required was you being injured significantly from the battle that was sure to ensue. Intel was already raised on Itachi's location.

Deep down, Sasuke knew his brother would be there - waiting for him.

As the younger of the two brothers made his way through the town he was in, someone stopped him. An older male.

"Young man, do you realize that your band is half covered in black?"

Looking down at the band, Sasuke saw what the man was talking about. No one had ever talked about what happened when a band turned black. Confusion evident on his face, Sasuke turned to look at the man's band. It was completely black.

"If you do not mind me asking, what does it mean if the ring goes black?"

The man held a sombre look on his face.

"Death."

Once again, you had a pounding headache. Leaning against the wall, you held your head. The room was starting to spin. At the moment that you collapsed, you fell into a large, warm body.

Everything in your vision went black.

You awoke to a beeping sound and something - no - someone stroking your head.

"S-Sasuke?"

"Shh, my love. You need your rest."

Your eyes opened and you hissed, the sudden burst of light making them sting and water. Looking up, you saw your beloved soulmate. Your head rested atop of his thigh supporting you.

An outburst of questions poured from your lips. "Sasuke, what happened? Did you kill Itachi?"

"No, I didn't. You were more important. You are more important. You always will be."

Pulling Sasuke down, you gave him a hug and a kiss. He couldn't stop them, the tears of relief. You were okay. Using your right hand, you wiped under his eye, collecting the tears - brushing them away.

"You had a brain tumour. I was lucky that I got there when I did. You had collapsed. After your surgery, you looked so pale. I couldn't stand it (Y/n). It hurt. It hurt so much watching you so ill, so on the edge. I couldn't stand it!"

"Yeah," a third voice cut in, "The entire time you were under, he was constantly looking at his band. It was a huge relief to all of us that there was no more black on it." Looking towards the door, you saw that it was Suigetsu.

The boy wore a sweet smile on his face as he handed your boyfriend a large cup of coffee. As soon as he did so, he exited the room, quietly closing the door behind him.

Gazing up at Sasuke, you pulled him down once again so that he was lying beside you. He wrapped his arms around you and the two of you fell into a content, peaceful sleep.

Every day - every hour after that scare - Sasuke checked his band.

Thankfully, the black never came back again.
