I can't even imagine a world without you ½

Naruto returned home after a mission since the incident. Surprisingly, the B-rank mission was fairly easy; he just had to stop an attempted robbery of a Daimyo and tie up some scoundrels following them.

After removing his shinobi gear and showering, he headed to his and his wife's room, ready to hug her and then get some rest.

"Hey." Temari greeted once Naruto entered her room. She was sitting on her bed, a report in her lap, but her eyes weren't on the paper. In fact, her eyes were blank, and it took her a second to realize Naruto was home from his mission. However, once she did, she turned her head, gave him a warm smile, and got up to hug him.

Naruto, on the other hand, knew immediately something was up with his wife. She was working on autopilot again, so he needed to figure out what she was thinking as soon as possible.

"How was the mission?" Temari asked, breaking the hug by taking a step back but still giving him a soft smile.

"It was okay, just a few bandits. How are you?" Naruto questioned, his blue eyes fixed on Temari's green ones as he tried to figure out what was wrong.

"I'm fine, just deep in thought," Temari replied quickly, wanting to change the subject as soon as possible.

Naruto paused. Usually, when Temari was thinking about something, she'd ramble on about it for as long as possible, in hushed murmurs, and thanks to the furball inside her, he could hear her with his super hearing. Her desire to quickly change the subject was not only misplaced, but it also meant something must be terribly wrong.

"What were you thinking?" he asked as he walked over to bed with her.

"Nothing important," she replied, focusing on sorting the report papers and putting them away.

"Are you sure it was nothing?" he asked as Temari went to turn off the light.

"I'm sure." She replied as she climbed into bed next to him.

"Are you really sure?" He repeated.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was nothing," Temari replied, a little annoyed.

Naruto didn't even have to wait a full ten seconds before Temari started speaking.

"Remember a couple of months ago, when you had those really bad injuries?"

"Yes." Naruto wished he could forget it. It was a battle against three S-rank shinobi, he fought alone since his team was too exhausted and like the Nidaime, Naruto stayed behind to give them time to escape. Luckily, a team of Suna ninja was nearby and went to help. He hated being so defenseless and scaring his family so much.

“It's just that, my mind got caught up in that memory, that thought of you being so close to death, and it started spiraling from there, and I started thinking, what if something like that happened again? What if one of these days I lost you? What if one of these days you lost me? What if…”

Temari watched as her wife began to ramble on about this train of thought. Her eyes took on a distant look, and at this rate, she was going to panic. So she did the only thing she could think of and kissed her.

Temari was stopped by a random kiss on her forehead and snapped out of her train of thought. Her eyes regained focus; she was pretty sure she felt tears, and she was staring straight into Naruto's blue eyes.

"Am I back in my thought spiral?" Temari asked, not taking her eyes off Naruto's.

"Yes, you did." He replied.

"I started rambling," Temari stated as a matter of fact.

Naruto just nodded, pulling Temari closer to him, and Temari rested her head on his chest, right on his heart. He wrapped his arms around her, and she continued.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you like that."

"Scare me?"

"Yeah?" Temari stepped back a little so she could look Naruto in the eyes again. "I'm sorry I scared you so much. I didn't realize you'd be thinking that could happen."

"Well, you know me," Temari smiled despite the tears now falling from her eyes, "Always thinking about the realistic situations that can arise as ninjas."

“Hey, none of that is going to happen to me again. You don’t have to worry,” Naruto tried and failed to assure her.

“But if it happened once, that means it can happen again! I… I… just…” Temari took a deep breath to help steady herself. “I can’t even imagine a world without you.”

"Temari no Sabaku-Uzumaki, I promise you won't have to worry about me leaving you anytime soon. In fact, I'll probably be around so often you'll be tired of me."

"I could never get tired of you, I love you." Temari took his face in her hands and placed a soft kiss on his lips.

"Do you think you'll be saying that in ten years?" Naruto challenged.

"Absolutely."

"Okay, I'll make you do it."

Naruto placed a soft kiss on the top of her head. Temari immediately began to hug Naruto, her arms wrapping around his waist and her head on his chest. Naruto wrapped his arms around Temari, and they both went to sleep with small smiles on their faces.
