Stephen Strange x Reader - Disappear [PLATONIC]
You had never been one for school and everyone found it weird that you were going to medical school. Nobody believed you at first but you had put your mind to it. Wanting to save and help people made the decision easy. You knew that it was going to be hard and tedious but you wanted to stick through it anyways.
While you were in school, you helped out at the hospital as a nurse. Getting your nursing degree was easy so the hospital hired you so you could gain experience. They also said that after you got your doctorate they would hire you again as the pediatric surgeon you were studying to be.
You worked in the pediatric wing mostly, but sometimes helped Christine Palmer if she had a rough patient. She always called you to help because you were great with people. You had a naturally calming presence and could always make people smile. The only person you couldn’t get through was Doctor Steven Strange.
That man always tried to avoid you. You didn’t know why but you suspected it was because you reminded him of his little sister. You only knew this because you overheard him talking to Christine about it. It was okay though. Even though he avoided you like the plague you were always happy and positive around him. The two of you didn’t work together often until you got your PhD and became the surgeon you wanted to be.
All new surgeons at that hospital had to complete a three month period where a senior doctor shadowed them and made sure that they were doing everything correctly. After those three months the doctor who shadowed the new surgeon either passed or failed them. You were given Dr. Strange. He was not happy.
“Why did you assign me to her?” Steven said to Christine.
“I didn’t do it. All I did was suggest that the two of you work together,” she said with a shit eating grin on her face. “Is that so bad?”
“Yes, it’s bad. I can’t stand her and I don’t think that she is ready.”
“That’s what you are for. Help her grow as a doctor and we’ll see what happens after three months. Okay?” Steven knew that he wouldn’t win this argument so he just huffed and nodded his head. Christine smiled happily.
“Great! The two of you start tomorrow so go home and get a good night’s sleep.”
“What are you, my mother?”
“No, I’m your girlfriend. Now go home. I still have some paperwork to do so I’ll be home in an hour or so.”
Christine kissed Steven and they went their separate ways. When Steven got home he immediately flopped down onto his bed, not even bothering to take off his clothes and shoes. He fell asleep quite easily and had a peaceful, dreamless sleep.
---
The next morning the both of you woke up, ready for the day. You were excited and Steven was still coming to terms with the fact that he had to shadow you for three months. For the first time in his career he did not want to get up and go to work. It was then that Christine thought that she had made a mistake.
“So what’s the real reason you don’t want to work with [y/n]?” Christine asked.
“She looks like my sister.”
“What’s so wrong with that?”
“My little sister died when I was twenty-three. She was only fifteen. [Y/n] reminds me of her in every way and it brings back bad memories.”
“I’m so sorry Steven. Let me see if I can shadow her instead.” Steven shook his head.
“No. It’ll be fine. Maybe it will help me get over her death.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. [Y/n] has been trying to be friends for a while. And if Nick can be friends with her, I can too.” Christine smiled and shook her head.
“Alright. Now let’s go to work, shall we?”
---
Those three months went by in a blur. You had exceeded Steven’s expectations and was welcomed as a full time doctor. Throughout those months you had broken through to Steven. Not counting Christine, he was your closest friend and you were his. That’s why it broke his heart when you disappeared.
Nobody knew what happened to you. One day you were smiling and laughing at the hospital and the next you were just gone. There was no trace left behind and everyone was saddened by your disappearance.
Over time, people basically forgot about you. You had never been found and was declared dead after two weeks. The only people who constantly kept you in their minds were Steven and Christine. They always kept tabs on missing person’s news but were always met with disappointment. Soon, after Steven was in his accident, they pushed you to the backs of their minds just like everyone else.
---
It had been a couple of years since you had disappeared and Steven had become the Master of the New York Sanctum. Wong was made Master of the Hong Kong Sanctum and now they were going to meet the newest Master of the London Sanctum. Wong had trained with her and couldn’t wait for her to meet Steven. They were polar opposites and it was sure to make for some fun and sarcastic interactions.
“What’s the rush Wong?” Steven said as he was woken up. “It’s still nighttime.”
“It’s the middle of the day in London. We are meeting there.” Steven groaned but got up anyways.
“Why couldn’t she meet us here?”
“I know her. She doesn’t function properly if she doesn’t get enough sleep. Trust me, this is for the best.”
“Okay. Give me five minutes to get dressed and then we’ll go.”
Wong left the room and let out a sigh. He didn’t know why he agreed to do this. All he ever wanted to do was make his hands stop shaking and to go back to his normal life. But that was out of the equation now. He was too far down the rabbit hole.
A couple of minutes later he was dressed and ready to go London. Thankfully he didn’t have to take a plane. Thank god for sling rings.
When Steven and Wong stepped into the London Sanctum they were greeted by a small child. They both looked at the child then at each other, very confused.
“Hello,” Steven said. “Who are you?”
“I am David, Master [l/n]’s apprentice. If you could follow me I will take you to see her,” David said with a small bow.
“Ookay. Thank you David.” They followed David into a room very similar to the one where Steven was introduced to the Ancient One. David opened a door to the mirror dimension and stepped aside.
“She is in there.” David bowed once more and walked away.
“That little kid is a little weird. And very young to be learning this stuff,” Steven said.
“We accept anyone willing to learn, Dr. Strange,” you said from behind them. Steven tensed up and turned slowly.
“[Y/n]? Is that you?”
“Hello Steven.” There was a smile on your face but it did not reach your eyes.
“What are you doing here? Are you the master of this Sanctum? What happened here? Why did you disappear?”
“One question at a time Steven.”
“Fine. Why did you disappear?”
“My family has been a part of this for a while. When Kaecilius betrayed the Ancient One, I was called back to London to help defend the Sanctum from the inevitable attack.”
“But the London Sanctum was destroyed. How where you not killed?”
“She was in Hong Kong, helping set up the defenses,” Wong said. You nodded.
“I also went to New York after I heard about the Ancient One. After I made sure it was safe once again, I went back to London to help rebuild. It took some time, but it’s back to all it’s original glory.
“And to answer your other question yes I am the Master of this Sanctum. My father survived the attack and passed it onto me.”
“Your father?”
“Adoptive. Just like I took David into my care, he took me in and taught me everything I know.”
Steven’s face was void of any emotion and you were starting to worry.
“Steven? Are you okay?”
“No. No I am not okay. You left me. You left Christine. You left without a single word. Do you know how worried we were? We thought that you had died. We thought that you were kidnapped or-or worse! How could you do that to us?!”
“What could I have told you? That I knew sorcery? That I had to go help protect the only thing protecting everyone form eternal darkness? How would you have reacted to that? If I was you I would have thought that I was on something! Before your accident you wouldn’t’ve understood! That is why I didn’t tell you anything. I didn’t want you to worry about my safety because I would have basically told you that I was walking into my death anyways.”
“You could have said that there was a family emergency. Then we wouldn’t have been so worried about you!”
“You of all people know that I do not lie. Trust me, it was better this way.” Steven started to argue back but you cut him off with a wave of your hand.
“This conversation is over. David will show the two of you around if you’d like. Then you can either stay for dinner or go home,” you said. “Thank you for coming to visit.”
You opened a portal with your sling ring and disappeared once more. Steven stood there, shaking with silent anger while Wong was quiet with wide eyes.
“I didn’t know that you two knew each other,” he said, breaking the silence. “How did you meet?”
“We worked at the same hospital. She was a nurse training to be a surgeon. When she became a surgeon is when she disappeared. Christine and I did everything we could do to find her, but apparently she’s good at more than medicine.”
“You will work it out. You can’t stay mad at her forever, can you?” Steven didn’t answer and followed David out into the courtyard.
“Steven?” Wong called.
“I’ll be back,” was all Steven said. He walked into a portal and Wong just sighed. Steven could be a man-child sometimes and there was nothing anybody could do about it.
“So,” Wong said to David. “Where is your library?”
---
You had gone to your favorite spot. The roof held no shelter from the rain, but that didn’t bother you. The rain had been your favorite ever since you were little. You let out your breath and started moving the water with your fingers. The only sounds were the rain, thunder, and your breathing.
“I knew I’d find you here,” Steven said from behind you.
“Even when I was supposed to be in London, sometimes I would sneak away to here. I’d almost always see you and Christine here, but one day you stopped coming,” you said, never removing your eyes off of the beautiful New York skyline.
“It hurt to come here after we heard that you were proclaimed dead,” Christine said. Your eyes went wide and the water you were playing with fell to the ground.
“Christine!” You yelled. Scrambling up from the ground, you ran to give her a hug.
“I missed you [y/n].”
“I missed you too Christine.” You buried your face into her shoulder and she smiled down at you softly.
“I’m so sorry! I never wanted to leave but I had to and I always felt guilty about just leaving but it was easier for me and I see that I was just being a coward.”
“Steven told me everything. You had to leave. It’s okay and we both forgive you.”
---
Even though you couldn’t show you face in the hospital because you were technically dead, Christine and Steven came to London once every two weeks. Everything was back to normal(ish) and you couldn’t be happier.
