“sit down please.” A please? That’s a first too, what the hell is going on.
“mother? Is something wrong?”
“no, no, nothing.” Her mom smiled too, a first, again.
“then why am I here? You don’t look mad, not upset either, and after an argument you just told me I’m getting picked up. What do you mean nothing is wrong.” she was very confused right now and she needed answers.
“oh sweetheart, I’m sorry-“ a sorry too?
“are you marrying me off?” her mother looked like she was caught off guard for a second there that seoyeon believed that she was in fact, getting married off but, her mother laughed? Huh?
“oh, no, no, I will never do that no matter how cruel I am.” so she knows she is cruel, great.
“I just…” she continued but then stopped and opened one of her desk’s drawers.
“this.” It was seoyeon’s turn to be caught off guard now. What the hell was her diary she kept hidden deep in her room doing here, in her mother’s hands.
“wh-where did you find that?” she was scared, very scared now, the things she wrote there, all her complains, everthing her younger self felt, how she felt misunderstood, lonely, unloved, seoyeon felt like crying but looking at her mother’s expression, full of guilt, of sadness and regret, seoyeon didn’t know what she should really feel like in that moment. What was this supposed to mean.
“I’m sorry for everything seoyeon. Everything I did that made you feel the way you did and you probably still do. we are sorry for everything sweetheart. Me and your father are ready to do our best to make it up for you. We will try evereything, to be present in your life in a positive way now-“
In that moment the door barged open and her father walked in, out of breath, was this old man really running just to get here?
“I’m sorry I’m late.” As he looked at his daughter who turned to face his, seeing her shocked state, with tears fighting their way out, he couldn’t help but walk her way, head down and standing in front of her he spoke.
“your mother probably already told you about the reason we invited you here today” clearing his throat he continued.
“we’re sorry dear, for absolutely everything, please give us a second chance to prove ourselves as your parents? We know we are late, very late, you are an adult now, and because of our actions, of putting our work over the feelings of our own daughter, you ended up feeling that alone, please forgive us?”
seoyeon was speechless for a moment. coming back to her parent's house after that call, she honestly didn't expect this to happen. her parents finding her diary from when she was like...fourteen, them reading it, regretting how they treated her, asking for forgiveness and a second chance. she couldn't believe it.
"is this for real?"
that got her a chuckle from both of them and as she looked back again at her mom she found the older lady with her hands open. an invitation, an agreement to a second chance. she loved her parents, no matter how badly they treated her for years bd she wanted to feel that love too. a parental love that was taken away from her, her whole childhood so with another look between her parents, she gave in.
as she hugged her mother, she felt another weight join them after just a few seconds, it was her father and in that moment, she believed their words, their promise to treat her better. she finally felt at ease for once. she didn't know all it took for her parents to wake up from whatever they had going on was for them to read her diary and now looking at the results, she didn't mind the fact that they found it like she did at first.
Pulling away from the hug she saw both of them smile, it was the first time she felt like those smiles were genuine, not just a grimace they were forced to put on to satisfy others.
Yooyeon was worried, it’s been about 5 to 6 hours since seoyeon left the dorm and the girl haven’t called her yet. she couldn’t help but overthink, it’s a habit she developed because of her roommate these past a few days and she hates it because, it’s not letting her focus on her work at all. All she have been thinking about for the past hour or two have been seoyeon, is she okay? What did her parents want? Would they take the girl away from her? What would happen really?
While she was so engrossed in her mind yooyeon didn’t notice the messages seoyeon sent and after a sudden alarm sound filled the room, yooyeon jolted up and looked at her phone, it was seoyeon calling her. Fucking finally.
“heyyy.” She sounds happy enough?
“hi, how are you?” a giggle, okay did things go south that seoyeon ended up drinking too much again?
“completely fineeee” doesn’t sound like it if u ask yooyeon.
“are you sure? How was the meeting? The dinner?”
“everything is fine, don’t worry, nothing big happened other than my parents-“ a hiccup.
“they what?” yooyeon was alarmed.
“oh my god don’t be so worried they just…” this girl keeps on telling her to not worry but she is doing absolutely everything that can worry her at this moment. Her thoughts were cut short when she heard a sigh from the other end.
“they apologized.” Huh?
“they apologized, for how they treated me as a child, of how much they made me feel lonely and unloved, they asked for a second chance to make things right too, can you believe it?” she continued then started giggling.
“I accepted the offer, of course I did, I love them, I do. No matter how badly they treated me I loved them anyway and this is a chance for all of us to finally be a…family. you know?” yooyeon softened as she just listened to other girl.
“we sat the whole evening and then dinner talking about everything and anything, they told me about their regrets, the reason they weren’t present, the reason they always had high expectations. On the other hand, I told them about how it felt coming home to no one back then, how college life have been better, I even told them about you!” seoyeon was so excited out of the sudden and yooyeon couldn’t help the smile that crept up her face, then again her thoughts were interrupted by seoyeon talking.
“they kept on teasing me, saying I was being overly excited while talking about you and h-“ hiccup
“how much I seemed to like you, even love you! Funny thing about all this is, they are somehow not homophobic! That’s crazy kinda. But yeah they gave me wine since I’am finally old enough and I ended up getting a little drunk sorryyy.”
Yooyeon’s heart was beating fast, way too fast. Seoyeon was telling her this like it was just the most normal thing to say over the phone, yooyeon knew seoyeon was drunk, but they also say drunk people tell the truth and she couldn’t help but wonder if her roommate liked her back or no.
“that’s great seoyeon, you worried me there for a second, I’m glad you’re okay.” That’s all she could say right now, when her roommate wakes up tomorrow she will remember all of this and they will probably talk about it, when she gets back to the dorm.
“yeah sorry, anyway, I’m going to sleep, don’t sleep too late study freak”
“yeah I won’t, and you take care of yourself too, yeah?”
“yeah. Love you bye!!” and with that seoyeon didn’t even wait for a reply.
Yooyeon ended up standing in place, staring at her phone after hearing the declining call, speechless to say the least. As she finally walked to her bed, she smiled and laid down.
