It wasn't just an ordinary day to say the least. at least not for her and many of her age, 18 years old now, a young adult that will soon embark in a new adventure of life that differs from her teenage years. It was the last day of high school, graduation was done, everyone was on their way back home some happy that this nightmare of three years is finally done, others sad at the thought of maybe not seeing their friends ever again and others already drained by the thought of having to build their lives on their own now instead of relaying on their parents.
But for yooyeon she found herself walking around the halls of her high school, flowers she picked up for herself on her way to school in hand, considering no one was there to gift her ones anyway, her backpack heavy on her shoulders and her mind working overtime thinking about what comes next. It was not because she had nothing planned out for the future, it was in fact the thought of all her plans weighting down on her. Her plans of getting the chance to live a better life than she experienced in her childhood and teenage years.
Growing up without real parents always got her the looks of pity from others, having to move from a foster house to another since the age of 5 after an accident she was the sole survivor of 13 years ago, an accident that left her mother, father and grandmother buried 6 feet under, it was a tough childhood to have but hey at least she was able to live while the only 3 people that ever cared about her died, right?
As she walked thought those halls reminiscing about the past 3 years of her life, 3 years that were not out of the ordinary for yooyeon but can only be described as lonely and empty. it's not that people didn't want to befriend her it was her who refused to cooperate that left no choice but for others to just give up as she watched from afar yet another person walk away with another pity look on their eyes. It's also not the fact that she didn't want to have friends but she was not ready to open up to anyone or trust anyone yet and she also didn't want anyone to distract her from her goals as she worked tirelessly day and night for her beloved scholarship.
But what did that leave her with? No happy memories to go back to, no friends to seek out during hard days and absolutely no social skills that required more than a hello, how can I help you?
This was the life yooyeon decided to build for herself after being old enough to understand what happened that night 13 years ago. She doesn't regret it and she's also not planning to let anything or anyone distract her from building a better and happier life even if it costed her personal needs that went beyond success and wealth.
On the other side of town, sat another 18 year-old in front of her friends at a little cozy café celebrating the end of those tiring 3 years that she didn't really care about. Academics were never a problem for her she was thankfully born smart that's why she decided it was better to just spend her time in high school enjoying the last 3 years of her teenage life.
Learning to live as a care-free spirit wasn't that easy really. One would look at her and think she never had any issues in her life but the bruises she tries hard to cover and hide from the peering eyes will tell you otherwise because no one ever have a perfect life to be fair, being rich with successful parents doesn't particularly mean you've got everything you've ever asked for. Especially not the love and care from people who didn't even want you in the first place, people who only have expectations that are impossible to achieve.
Seoyeon was just excited about the fact that she will finally be away from that house, the one they want her to call home, she has to go back to everyday. Big, empty and cold a big contrast to her bubbly, happy-go-lucky, chill personality. She just has to endure another boring summer, one she would be taking random classes in she couldn't care less about because her parents understand nothing other than perfection, and that always leave her to one thought. were they born this way or was it society's fault?
As she chats away with her friends, nakyoung and xinyu, about how excited she is to finally feel freedom away from her parents, forgetting for a moment that she was still weighted down by their expectations, her only care in the world was that this is a new chapter of her life. One she would take as an opportunity to explore what she loves and desires, to make more friends and spread more love among people and most importantly a step that will help her escape her parent's cage.
As September rolls by, after a summer full of boring classes and tiring work, both yooyeon and seoyeon were preparing to start their new chapter of their new adult life.
Moving from a place to another wasn't a foreigner feeling to yooyeon, she was in fact so used to it that her only luggage was a box and her backpack, she didn't have many clothes and most of her things were just old electronics and necessities she got from her too-many- to-count-on-two-hands foster parents that despite being too much non of them ever cared enough to fully adopt her which will always make her think am I not good enough?
On the other hand even tho seoyeon wasn't used to living anywhere other than her parents house, she was basically jumping from excitement as she packed her too-many-to-count bags the night before she will finally be free from the coldness of her parents house and their hearts.
As both girls got ready to embark in this new chapter of their life one thought keep pestering their minds.
"I wonder what my roommate would be like?"
College starts in two week, getting the scholarship she has longed for those past 3 years wasn't easy but to her it was worth it as it holds the only little hope that she has left. Yooyeon might not have enough social skills to hold a long term conversation but she can hold up enough with the receptionist of the dorms building as he kept talking about all the unnecessary rules that are set for young adults that will be broken anyway.
"and lastly no coming back past midnight, especially not drunk. Do you understand me young lady?"
"yes sir, can I now please have my room's number I have things to do"
As he gave her the keys yooyeon was already annoyed by the fact that the said room was in the fourth floor. There was no elevator. Let alone the loud laughing and talking she hears as she gets closer to her room. how nice.
As she lets herself in as quite as she possibly can she sees a girl, a very tiny girl, laying on her bed, talking on the phone all so enthusiastically about something yooyeon couldn't even comprehend as if the girl was speaking in another language and maybe she was but honestly? Yooyeon couldn't care less as she took a look around the dorm, it wasn't the biggest studio condo she has ever seen but it was okay. By the time she looked back at the girl she found her looking straight at her and as the tiny human smiled she introduced herself
"Hi, nice to meet you! I'm yoon seoyeon, you're my roommate I suppose?"
