Summary
"So, si Aiah, huh?". Jhoanna could only hide her face from embarrassment. It isn't because of her crushing on someone but being caught in the act is definitely not good news for her. Jhoanna whines and shyly looks at Maloi. "Wala sa bucket list ko ang magka-crush ngayon but it just happened, okay?" She added frustratingly."It just happened na sa straight ka nagkaka crush ngayon?".

Hanggang makarating sa iyo

The University campus, which is typically a quiet study space with the steady tapping of keyboards, was changed. Vibrant colors have been painted on it by Intramurals Day. Not only did the jerseys and banners stand out, though, but the way the surroundings appeared to get involved as well. The lawns, which are typically kept in immaculate condition, displayed the playful marks left by the day's events.

The air, which was usually clear and crisp, smelled odd. A distinct, almost overpowering scent was created as the pleasant scent of fallen leaves blended with the smells of hot dogs and popcorn. Amidst the rustling of leaves in the mild breeze, there was a cacophony of sounds, including the cheers of the crowd, the thud of volleyballs, and the rhythmic squeak of sneakers on concrete. A tangible sense of excitement and a common goal pervaded the atmosphere. The enthusiastic audience, which was made up of a diverse range of students, teachers, and alumni, cheered and applauded in unison.

A hush fell over the sprawling campus gymnasium as Dr. Evelyn Urduja, CEO of the University, approached the makeshift stage. The vibrant chaos of Intramurals Day momentarily stilled; a thousand pairs of eyes were drawn to the woman who held the reins of their academic world. She wasn't escorted; she walked purposefully, a confident stride that spoke volumes about her leadership. As she reached the podium, a simple wooden structure adorned with the university's logo, she paused, taking in the sea of faces before her. A warm smile played on her lips, softening the sharp lines of her otherwise professional demeanor.

Then, with a gentle tap of a small, ornate gavel – a surprisingly elegant contrast to the casual setting – she officially opened the event. The sound, crisp and clear, cut through the expectant silence, a signal for the day's festivities to begin.

"Good morning, Red Eagles!" Her voice, clear and resonant, carried effortlessly across the expansive field. "Look around you. Look at this incredible display of energy, of camaraderie, of sheer, unadulterated fun! This, my friends, is the heart of Northwood University – a vibrant community of scholars, athletes, artists, and dreamers, all united by a shared passion for excellence and a zest for life."

She paused, letting her words sink in, her gaze sweeping across the diverse crowd. "Intramurals Day isn't just about winning or losing; it's about pushing your limits, discovering hidden talents, and forging bonds that will last a lifetime. I've seen firsthand the incredible friendships forged in these very fields, the unexpected collaborations born from shared sweat and laughter, and the resilience developed through competition and teamwork."

She spoke of the importance of balance, the need to nurture both the mind and the body, and the necessity of finding harmony between academic rigor and the pursuit of personal well-being.

"This day is a testament to the holistic education we strive to provide at our dear university," she continued, her voice taking on a more serious tone. "It's a reminder that success is not solely defined by academic achievements, but by the well-rounded individual we strive to cultivate – someone who is intellectually sharp, physically fit, and socially engaged."

She concluded her speech with a heartfelt message of encouragement, urging the students to embrace the day's challenges, to celebrate their successes, and to cherish the memories they would create. "So, hindi na natin pa kailangang patagalin, let the games begin!" she declared, her voice ringing with genuine enthusiasm. The applause that followed was deafening, a wave of appreciation washing over the stage.

Her speech, delivered with her usual blend of sharp wit and genuine warmth, was punctuated by bursts of applause and appreciative laughter. The gymnasium’s acoustics amplified her voice, carrying her message of unity, competition, and the importance of a balanced life to every corner of the room. There was no need for a hush; the crowd's energy was a testament to their enthusiasm, a vibrant backdrop to her inspiring words.

As the initial excitement subsided slightly, Aiah subtly signaled to her fellow officers. The controlled chaos of the event didn't obscure her focused gaze; she quickly assessed the overall success of the opening ceremony, noting minor adjustments that could be made for future events. The noise level remained high; the excited chatter of the crowd was a constant presence.

Leaning in slightly, she had to raise her voice to be heard above the din. "Quick meeting, mamaya" she announced, her voice clear and strong, cutting through the background noise, "Kasama natin ang student publication later. Kailangan natin maki coordinate since sila ang gagawa ng updates tungkol sa mga contested events, and each of you, will have them accompanied. Kung saang sports kayo naka-assign, may kasama kayong student journalist. Are we clear?"

As she spoke, she subtly glanced at Jhoanna, a quick, almost imperceptible exchange that spoke volumes more than words ever could. A barely distinct softening of her eyes, a fleeting smile playing on her lips – a silent communication that conveyed not just shared understanding, but the feelings that existed between them, a silent acknowledgment of their mutual affection.

Jhoanna, in response, offered a barely noticeable blush, a subtle mirroring of Aiah's gesture, her eyes sparkling with a warmth that went beyond professional respect. The exchange was swift and silent, almost invisible to the casual observer, yet deeply meaningful to those involved.

The loud bang of noise didn’t go off as the student representatives, chosen for their academic achievements and campus contributions, stood ready with smaller torches. Instead of a towering outdoor torch, a smaller, but equally impressive, ceremonial torch stood center stage, ready to be lit up.

Aiah moved swiftly to find her way to reach beside Jhoanna, as the master of ceremony spoke of the torch as a symbol of the universities' enduring spirit—a beacon of knowledge, innovation, and community within the walls of their shared space. Her words resonated with the assembled students, faculty, and guests, the gymnasium's acoustics amplifying her message. Napakaingay ng paligid, but Jhoanna could only focus on the presence beside her--- clapping and smiling while watching the students make their way to the ceremonial torch.

"And now," the master of ceremony announced, his voice ringing with enthusiasm, "for a moment that truly embodies the spirit of the Red Eagles: the lighting of the Intramurals Torch! As you can see, our student representatives, each a shining example of academic excellence and campus involvement, are making their way to the center of the arena."

Leaning in, “Do you have your handkerchief with you? Pinagpapawisan ka, Jho.” Aiah asked, her voice raising in order for Jhoanna to hear. “May tissue ako but I don’t have it here. Nasa office ‘yung bag ko eh.”  her expression is concerned but gentle

“I have, kaso nasa car din ata. Jhoanna responded.

"These young leaders," the master of ceremony continued, his voice filled with pride, "represent the very best of our university. Their dedication, their hard work, and their unwavering commitment to our community are truly inspiring. They are the embodiment of the spirit we celebrate today – a spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and a shared passion for excellence."

Aiah’s brow creased, and let out a sigh.

“I know, I’m sorry. I’ll get it after this, or hingi nalang muna ako ng tissue kapag may nakita akong kakilala ko diyan.” Jhoanna offered a weak smile, attempting to downplay her discomfort.

“No need,” Aiah insisted gently, her tone firm yet caring. She reached into her pocket, her fingers deftly finding the small, crisply ironed handkerchief she always kept there. It was a simple linen handkerchief, embroidered with a delicate floral pattern.

With a gentle touch, Aiah offered the handkerchief to Jhoanna. "Here," she said softly, her eyes conveying concern and affection.

Jhoanna hesitated for a moment, then gratefully accepted the handkerchief, her fingers brushing lightly against Aiah's. But Aiah seemed to have another plan because before Jhoanna could even fully grasp it, Aiah, with a swift, almost imperceptible movement, used the handkerchief to gently wipe the perspiration from Jhoanna's forehead and neck. The touch was light, fleeting, yet intimate.

"As they light the torch," the MC concluded, his voice rising in anticipation, "let us all take a moment to reflect on the values that bind us together – community, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence. Let the flame of this torch serve as a beacon, guiding us throughout this day of celebration, competition, and camaraderie!" His words were met with enthusiastic applause as the final student representative successfully lit the main torch, its flame leaping to life, a powerful symbol of the day's commencement.

“Next time, don’t ever forget to bring yours. Sermon ni Aiah, her voice was sharp yet gentle, and almost have sense of authority.

Natulala si Jhoanna sa ginawa niya. They’re in the middle of a crowd, roaring with commotion, and surrounded by a charged energy. Yet, amidst all that, Jhoanna could swear that she could hear her heart beating loudly at that moment and it felt like the room only occupied the two of them.

Not even to the one who’s talking in the stage—na hindi niya rin alam kung ‘yung CEO ba ulit o ‘yung babaeng MC, or ibang guest na.

“Jhoanna!” saad ni Aiah which made the latter back to reality.

Aiah sighed and let herself understand Jhoanna this time. She leaned in closer to Jhoanna’s ears. “I asked if may dala kang extra shirt for later?

Jhoanna chuckled from Aiah’s sentiment. “Meron, huwag kang mag alala.

“I’ll let you have it for now hindi dahil sa kailangan mo pa siyang labhan para ibalik, but because you need it here pa ngayon. Don’t bother washing it, Jho. I don’t mind using it after mong gamitin. I’m not that maarte.”

Napangiwi si Jhoanna sa sinabi niya. “I get na hindi ka maarte but you can’t just use the things that others have used. Paano kung may contagious disease ako or ‘yung ibang tao?”

“I’m not including other people here naman, Jhoanna.” Aiah replied immediately while wiping the beads of sweat that were once forming on Jhoanna’s forehead again. “And bakit? Do you have a contagious disease ba?” she asked.

After that, she gently gets Jhoanna’s hand puts the handkerchief in her palm. “And your smile was the only thing about you that I'm positive was contagious.”

Nights after their videocall, they both been going to a late-night bonding. Let it be on the streets, at any convenience store that opens 24/7, or at coastal highway near them. Jhoanna drives, while Aiah was keeping her entertained and they’re both strict to follow their scheduled time on going back home at 1 in the morning. They made sure to finish their academic works first before going out. But of course, they face time each other while working.

Jhoanna cherished those three nights kahit minsan sobrang pagod siya sa umaga. Well, they both are and doing all those night-outs after a chaotic daytime feels like a breath of fresh air. They talk about things, laugh at every joke, and hold hands whenever they feel like it. Those nights will surely remain in their hearts and minds, how those nights heal whatever uncertainties and havoc going on with their lives. And what makes it special is that…

It’s just the two of them, finding solace in each other’s presence.

“I’m sorry to break your bubble pero tinatawag tayo para sa photo ops. Member daw ng CSSC.” She announced and gave them a knowing look.

Jhoanna nodded and averted her gaze to the floor while she fixed her eyeglasses. While Aiah gathered her subordinates, not minding Colet's intense stare.

"Muntik nang matunaw si Jhoanna kanina ah." Colet teased.

Aiah rolled her eyes and shrugged her head pero hindi nito mapigilang ngumiti. "Shut up."

The photographer signaled them. Agad namang nagppsisyon ang iba, they compressed and others get themselves settled on the floor.

It made Aiah poke the inside of her cheek. Gutso niyang katabi si Jhoanna sa photo ops nila but Maloi made it not happen. She subtly looks at Jhoanna who’s already smiling at the camera while her hand snakes around Maloi’s waist. She doesn’t seem bothered.

“Okay, on the count of three po,” The photographer started and everybody flashed their signature pose and smile.

“One…” he counted, his hand signaling the number.

Aiah, on the other hand, intentionally brushed her fingers on Jhoanna’s hand that rested on Maloi’s waist. It made Jhoanna look at her subtly but Aiah’s focus was on the camera in front.

“Two…”

Jhoanna unconsciously removed her hand from Maloi’s waist. In a gentle move, Aiah slowly grabbed Jhoanna’s hand and held it in a delicate manner. But the only difference right now is nasa public place sila. There, in a swift motion, Aiah decided to clasp their hand together; their fingers intertwining and her thumb gently rubbing her skin.

“Three!”

But it was too late for Jhoanna to pose right in front of it dahil kay Aiah na siya nakatingin sa mga sandaling iyon.

Maraming salamat!” the photographer waved his hand and bid his goodbye.

And just like that, Aiah slowly let go of Jhoanna’s hand leaving the latter blushing and beading with sweat on her forehead. Jhoanna looked at Aiah, who’s now casually talking with someone she recognized as the head of the student publication team.

Acting unbothered after akong baliwin kanina? Loko ka Talaga, Aiah.

“Huy! Okay ka lang diyan?” Maloi beamed at her.

Jhoanna used Aiah’s handkerchief to wipe the sweat and she cupped her face after. “O-Oo ata, ate.

Maloi scolded but there was a concern in her voice.

“May water ka namang dala? Baka madehydrate ka pa niyan.” She asked.

Jhoanna nodded her head and smiled at her. “Okay, thank you, ate.”

Just then, a booming voice from the public address system cut through their consciousness. "Attention, participants, and spectators! The Intramurals games will begin in precisely thirty minutes! Please take this time to hydrate, rest, and prepare for an exciting day of competition! Also, you could look at the monitor to see where the contested events will take place. Good luck and God bless, red eagles!" The announcement served as a timely reminder of their responsibilities.

"Okay guys, gather around." Aiah clapped her hands in a serious and commanding manner. Her usual playful demeanor was nowhere to be found and all that was left was her serious yet calm aura. Parang nag transform siya into being a normal student to a great leader.

"You all know your posts, right? All you have to do is make sure the game runs smoothly and tell to me if something wrong happens. Although, may kasama namang officiating official sa bawat laro, but still, if something is wrong, always report it to me. Are we clear?"

One rule: They can have their playful time when nothing important is going on. But when the duty calls, there should be no distractions.

Aiah asked, and a few raised their hand. "Okay, the attendance sheets are already printed out. I'll come check on you kapag matapos na ako sa area ko."

"Okay, Pres." They said in unison.

“You could all go to your assigned area now.

Aiah smiled and the members bid their goodbye to go on their respective areas na babantayan. Jhoanna was also ready to go when Aiah stopped her. She was grabbing her arm, hindi ito mahigpit, hindi rin masyadong magaan. Naguluhan naman si Jhoanna sa ginawa niya. It made her think on what is Aiah thinking again now at ano kaya ang balak nito.

Meanwhile, Aiah waited for her co-members to leave. When they were far enough, tinuon niya ang tingin nito kay Jhoanna saka ito ngumiti.

“Could you wait for me in the office before ka pumunta sa area mo?

“Ano namang ibibigay mo?”

“Basta, wait for me there. May dadaanan lang ako and I’ll go sa office after, okay? Go na!” saad ni Aiah at dali-dali itong naglakad paalis.

Nakaalis na ito before Jhoanna could even complain. Good thing that their office was near the gymnasium.

She waited for Aiah when she got there. Jhoanna leaned her back on the chair she was sitting while waiting. She was making herself comfortable before she knew she was going to be exhausted after today. And to think na may 2 days pa before the intramurals will end was already giving her some headaches.

Makakalabas kaya kami mamaya ni Aiah? She wonders. Well, nakaya parin naman nilang lumabas kagabi kahit pagod sila sa preparation kahapon. So, maybe they will parin?

Jhoanna shifted from her seat when she heard the door open and revealed Aiah from it. She adjusted her glasses and saw that the lady was holding a light blue tumbler and a plastic bag na may laman. Tumayo siya nang papalapit na ito.

“Hey,” Aiah started and handed her the goods. “These are for you.”

“What are these?” hindi makapaniwala nitong tanong.

“Hindi mo ba nakikita? That’s a tumbler and tissues.”

“I know kung ano ang mga ito—what I meant was para saan?”

Aiah sighed, “Necessities mo. It’s a hassle, kaya napag isipan ko na ibigay ko nalang sa’yo ‘yang extra tumbler ko and I also got you some tissues kasi one handkerchief is not enough for a pawisin like you.”

Jhoanna’s breath hitched from Aiah’s thoughtfulness.

“And hind isa pagiging chismosa but overheard you and Maloi talking kanina. You said wala kang tumbler para sa tubig so I got you mine. Good thing I have two and nasa locker ko lang ‘yung isa.”

“T-Thank you.” She mumbled.

She doesn’t intend to treat her like that, she just wants her to be comfortable, dry, and hydrated ngayon because the weather is too hot.

But if given the chance to treat her like one, why not?

“Let’s wait for each other to grab lunch later, okay? Sabay na tayo.”

“O-Okay, chat mo nalang ako kung saan.”

Aiah nodded and gets her bag, “Let’s go na kasi malapit na mag start ang games. Drink your water ha, don’t forget to refill it kapag ubos na.”

Jhoanna also nodded at umayos ito ng tayo. “I will, thanks for this, Aiah.” She said while showing her bag and water bottle.

Aiah smiled sweetly and cleared her throat. “Always, for you.”

Jhoanna was designated to look after the table tennis and badminton game. She could easily drive from one place to another using that, at pwede naman i-park sa may puno malapit doon.

It was a good thing that the sports she was assigned in was held indoors. At least, hindi babad sa araw. She was observing the game and interview some athletes while they aren’t playing yet. Kasama niya ang isang member ng publication who she knew was Taneo. Although she couldn’t quite remember how many times did, he took a picture of her.

Jhoanna leaned in; she adjusted her glasses to look at the photos. “Oh, ‘di ba maganda lahat? Partida karamihan pa diyan eh stolen pa.” he proudly says while showing her the photos.

She admits that the shots were good pero ayaw niya paring ma-post ito kung saan saan.

“Baliw!

“Sige, gatekeep ko nalang ‘to lahat.”

“Huwag din ‘no, mas weird ‘yan.” She said, it came out as a joke for Taneo but Jhoanna meant it.

She doesn’t have her umbrella but Taneo was kind enough to let him share his. They were now sharing the same shade in which Jhoanna finds it weird and awkward dahil they need to get close enough para masilungan silang dalawa. But she doesn’t dwell on it much because she likes to think that Taneo just want her to be comfortable amidst the hot rays of the sun.

Contrast to the venue of table tennis, this one is way too hot!

One of the players answered when Jhoanna asked them.

Not to mention na masyado ring nakakapagod ‘yung laro. But the players assured her na wala namang nangyayaring ganoong incident dahil sanay na sila sa init.

Taneo asked her with concern in his eyes.

Jhoanna smiled weakly and tried to give him some air using her mini fan dahil halatang naiinitan din ito.

“Okay lang ako, gawin mo muna ‘yung trabaho mo bago tayo lumabas.” She whispered, while fanning his face and neck. “Pinagpapawisan ka rin.” Saad pa niya.

The poor boy was almost fighting for his life when Jhoanna did that. Taneo cleared his throat and watched the game.

“Uh, k-kunin mo muna ‘to at paypayan mo sarili mo.

She waited for Taneo to finish his work.

Aiah:

<Almost lunchbreak naaa. Where are you now? :D>

<Medyo gutom na ako HAHAHA. Tell me where you are para alam ko kung saan tayo kakain.>

Tinignan muna ni Jhoanna ang paligid before she typed her reply, and when she sees that nobody seems to be minding her, nagtipa agad siya ng reply niya.

Jhoanna:

<Sa may badminton po kami. Super init here.>

Aiah:

<Malapit ‘yan sa College of Human Kinetics ‘no? Sa may cafeteria nalang nila tayo kumain.>

<Aww, may refill station naman diyan? Update me kapag wala, I’ll come to give you a refill.>

Jhoanna:

<Huy!

Why must she go on such length’s para lang bigyan ulit siya ng tubig? Grabe namang effort ‘yan, Arceta.

Aiah:

<I mean, I could go there if you wanted to.>

<Nasa malapit ka lang naman.>

If Jhoanna could remember it exactly, sa may volleyball, sepak takraw, and basetball naka assign si Aiah at ate niya Colet. And the venue was by the gym lang. Jhoanna did the math and approximates that it was a half kilometer away from them.

Jhoanna:

<Aysus! Alam ko kung nasaan ka ‘no. May kalayuan ‘yan dito sa amin kaya huwag nalang. I can buy naman here. Save your energy instead, Aiah.>

Aiah:

<Jho…>

<Here I thought that between the two of us, ako ‘yung dense.>

<Pero mas malala ka pala>

<You can’t take the hint, won’t you?>

Huh?

Jhoanna was ready to type her reply when Taneo nudged at her. She pouted and put her phone back to her bag. Hindi na siya nakareply.

“Nakakarami ka na ngayong araw. Tama na po.”

Taneo laughed and nudged at her again.

“Sige, bukas nalang ulit?” he said and winked.

Jhoanna chuckled and adjusted her glasses.

A member from the CSSC also came to give their snacks in which they immediately consumed. Nagkwentuhan lang sila habang kumakain and they go back to the venue where the table tennis is being held. Jhoanna made sure to get a refill first before getting back to work.

Although it feels fulfilling to serve, the weight of duties and responsibilities felt overwhelming.

That only means na lunch break na, makakapagpahinga na siya ng ilang oras, plus, she gets to see Aiah.

She also washed her face and wipe her neck and arms with wet tissue.

Meanwhile, Aiah was looking through her phone and at the cafeteria’s door, hoping na sana iluwal ng pintuan si Jhoanna. Wala pa kasi itong reply sa kaniya and she was already starving kanina pa. Now she wonders what she could be doing right now dahil alam naman niyang lunch break na ng lahat ng contested event ngayon.

Colet sighed and leaned back.

Said Aiah and dramatically slumped on the table.

Aiah raised her finger and waved it side by side, agad namang umikot ang mata ni Colet.

“Kaya ko siya hintayin. Sabay na tayong tatlo mamaya.” Nanghihinang saad ni Aiah.

Colet suddenly looked at the door para rin sana icheck kung meron na si Jhoanna and to her surprise, nakarating nan ga siya rito. But her initial reaction quickly subsided when she saw that she was with someone. Tumaas ang kilay neto’t napangisi. She looked at Aiah who was still slumped on the table, not fully aware of what was happening. Colet’s amusement was rising. She was dying to see how her dear friend would react to this.

“Jho!” Colet called her, agad naman itong nakita ni Jhoanna. “Dito kami!” sigaw pa nito at tinuro ang table nila.

Aiah immediately shifted from her seat when she heard Colet shouting Jhoanna’s name. She knows this man. Kasali rin ito sa school publication, but what is he doing here?

Jhoanna started. “Hello, ate Colet, P-Pres Aiah.” Bati pa nito sa kanila.

Aiah smiled and waved her hand bago dumako ang tingin nito sa kasama niya.

“Pres Aiah!” Taneo enthusiastically greeted her and offered his hand for a handshake. Hindi ko alam kung nasaan sila ngayon.” his voice was cheerful, yet tinged with a hint of awkwardness.

Aiah did him a handshake for a second bago sumagot sa kanya. “Taneo. Oh yeah, I heard that sa may malapit sila sa oval ngayon for lunch but you could always join us, we don’t mind.”

Taneo smiled and thanked her. Ngumiti rin si Aiah at saka sinenyasan si Jhoanna na tumabi sa kanya—sa gitna nil ani Colet, to be specific. She pulled the chair so that Jhoanna could sit. Colet smirked when she noticed the subtle shift in Aiah’s looks.

Oh, this would be fun.

Throughout the lunch, Aiah was fast to tend on Jhoanna’s needs. She made sure that Jhoanna could get whatever she needs before someone does.

They fall into an easy conversation while eating. Aiah had learned that Taneo was also a journalist during his high school days, which made him apply a position to the school publication. He also told them that she knew Jhoanna since that time and they also met each other during DSPC days.

They talked and talked, and how Aiah hated it when this Taneo boy looked at Jhoanna with his eyes sparkling with excitement and enthusiasm. Aiah knew very well what those looks meant. But at the same time, she knew she couldn’t blame him, because, well, that was Jhoanna. Apart from being known in the campus for her impressive achievements, kilala rin siya dahil sa angkin nitong ganda. Behind those glasses was an angelic and mesmerizing face that anyone could stare at the whole day. So how could someone not be attracted to her?

Kung sa way palang ng pagtingin ni Taneo sa kanya, naiinis na siya, now imagine her reaction when Colet showed them a picture from the official social media account of the school publication. It was a picture of Jhoanna and Taneo, seemingly lost in their own world in the courtside. Nakatutok ang mini fan na hawak ni Jhoanna kay Taneo while the latter was holding a cartoon.

Nagulat si Jhoanna nang makita ito. Anyone could get the wrong idea dahil medyo malapit ang mukha nila sa isa’t isa at kung magkatinginan pa sila dito’y parang may feelings sila sa isa’t isa. Another picture was when they share the umbrella.

Taneo scratch the back of his neck. He tried to stop himself from smiling but the blushing from his face was visible.

Jhoanna looked at Aiah who’s still looking at the photos. “P-Para kaming ewan diyan, p-pres Aiah. Huwag mo nalang tignan.”

Jhoanna was nervous as hell. She silently cursed at herself for being not attentive at that time. Wala lang sa kaniya ‘yung nangyaring ganoon but other people might conclude with something.

“A-ate Aiah p—”

Aiah gently placed the phone on the table at napatigil kaagad si Jhoanna sa sasabihin niya. Aiah took a sip from her drink and leaned back nonchalantly.

“What do you mean para kayong ewan diyan?” Aiah asked when she finished drinking. She placed the cup in the table and she smiled. “Ang cute niyo kaya. Para kayong magkuya.”

Two sentences were enough for Colet’s laughter to echo in the whole room. She had taken it as the funniest thing she’d ever heard. She’d choked on her juice, tears streaming down her face as she gasped for breath between shrieks. Now, she was wiping her eyes, still giggling, a faint blush creeping onto her cheeks.

Aiah sighed inwardly. She knew Colet’s laughter wasn't entirely directed at the photo itself. There was a subtext, a layer of unspoken teasing, that Aiah couldn’t quite decipher. Perhaps it was the unexpectedness of the comparison? Or maybe it was something else entirely. Even Jhoanna’s holding her laughter now. Seeing this made Aiah’s brow crease.

What? They do look alike in that photo naman ah. Well, at least for her, they do. Sana nga malaman nilang magpinsan sila.

“G-Grabe naman.” Taneo shyly said when Aiah’s words sink in his system.

“What? Hindi ba’t tama naman ako kasi Taneo’s a year older than you?” Aiah asked directly to Jhoanna.

Jhoanna bites her bottom lip before she responds, pinipilit niya ring hindi tumawa. “Tama naman po.”

“See? Magkuya parin sila.”

When the initial funny atmosphere subsided, Aiah excused herself to use the comfort room dahil naiihi na ito. Returning to their table, she found Taneo meticulously cleaning the lens of his DSLR camera, the substantial body gleaming under the cafeteria lights. He was carefully removing the memory card, a small, almost ritualistic action.

She looked around to see but to her luck, wala talaga sila pero nandoon parin naman ang kanilang bag at ibang gamit.

“Saan sila?” Aiah simply asked him.

He looked up as she approached, a polite smile gracing his lips.

Aiah nodded, attempting nonchalance, but her eyes were drawn to the camera and the card he now held. He was inserting the card into a card reader connected to his laptop, the screen displaying a progress bar as files were transferred. This time, there was no mistaking it; he was clearly transferring his photos.

While Taneo was momentarily distracted, seemingly engrossed in the transfer process, Aiah leaned in, her gaze falling on the laptop screen. The display showed a clear, organized collection of images. But what caught her eyes more was that almost all of them featured Jhoanna. The high-resolution images from his DSLR were breathtaking though. The candid shots from the school intramurals were sharp and vibrant, capturing the light in her hair, and the sparkle in her eyes with stunning precision. The close-ups were amazing too, revealing the delicate details of Jhoanna’s face with an almost reverent attention to detail. Even the seemingly simple shots—Jhoanna smiling, sipping a drink, gazing out a game—were composed with an artist's eye, each image telling a silent story of affection and admiration.

Aiah cleared her throat, “Hindi ata sa game ‘yung focus mo kanina ah.”

“Ah,” Taneo quickly looked away, feeling a slight blush creep onto his cheeks, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of his laptop.

Aiah smirks, she wanted to play a little bit. “Ganda niya masyado ‘no?” she asked but she realized that it shouldn’t been a question kasi sobrang ganda naman talaga ni Jhoanna.

Taneo nodded, scratching the back of his neck. “Mismo!

“Type mo?” Aiah asked him again, still grinning but deep down, she wanted to pinch herself from asking that question.

He chuckled, with his eyes sparkling with anticipation. He glanced at the laptop, then back at Aiah, his gaze darting around the cafeteria as if searching for an escape route.

“Huy! Gusto mo nga siya?” Aiah asked again, her patience getting thinner, but she’s still smiling para hindi siya magmukhang rude.

“O…Oo?” Taneo answered hesitantly.

Wala ito, hindi pa pala sure.

Aiah leaned back and took a sip from her water. She looked at Taneo, amused and non-yielding.

“Wrong timing ka. Jhoanna told me that she was into someone already. So, I guess, ngayon pa lang dapat mag move on ka na?”

Aiah never wanted to brag, but those words came out smoothly at hindi na niya ‘yun mababawi pa.

Aiah wanted to give Taneo her victory smile when she saw how he reacted.
