Something has Changed Within Me

Glinda stood there at the end of her bed, two clothing items in front of her. It was a usual situation she was often in, but today she was all sorts of dizzy as she would describe it. Too different she thought. Her Popsical is a tailor, and her Momsie is a designer, so she has grown up with all these beautiful dresses and today she was delivered with one of course. But was surprised to find another outfit beneath it with a note on top of it. She’d read the note later. She looked more admired the new outfit, it was perfectly tailored navy pants, two shirt options a pink blouse and a pale pink button up with a navy jacket and a belt and tie to match the ensemble. It would be something she’d choose should she want to. She found herself smiling briefly before shaking her head roughly disgusted at herself. Oz why would they send me this? She thought. She shook her head again before roughly shoving it to the back of her closet and just in time, as a whirlwind of green came stumbling through the door ranting about her class and Fiyero not taking it seriously. Glinda was usually paying attention to her girlfriend, but her mind kept drifting her closet, she couldn’t let go of it.

“GLINDAA” snapped her out of it, she looked wide-eyed at Elphaba.

“Sorry darling”

“Are you okay my sweet? You’re very quiet” Elphaba looked at Glinda closely she could see something the blonde was hiding in her eyes, an emotion she hadn’t seen in the blonde, and she couldn’t name it.

“I’m very well. Just admiring the goddess in front of me. My Oz I am a lucky girl, you look gorgeous today my love” she smirked knowingly at the dark green almost purple flush that has taken over her face. She held out her hands to the older girl pulling her in for a soft kiss. “Tell me what happened in class with Fiyero, I’m listening” Elphaba looked at her, looking for something until she stopped and just nodded before launching into her story. Glinda smiled but she still couldn't stop think about the outfit.

Hours later, once Elphaba fell asleep, Glinda snuck away to the balcony with the note which was more a letter from her parents. One look back at the sleeping girl, she opened the letter.

Our dearest Galinda,
We are sure you have many questions, as why we sent what we did. No offense will be taken if you wish to return in it or dispose of it. Before you do that, let us explain. You never saw your face as a kid, but we did. You never cared about what you wore, as long as it was made from us. You had noticed a design from your Momsie, you were entranced. So you sat with me, as I tailored a young man’s outfit, I cannot remember what the occasion was, but no matter, after I had finished you asked if you could try it on. In your excitement, you got dressed and we had seen a new kind of excitement in your eyes. We were determined to keep it there so over the next week, your mother and I decided to make another closet for you, one full of your pretty dresses and one full of pants and button ups, only the best for you, our dearest. When you came home everything changed, we showed you, your second closet and instead of excitement you looked scared. Our happy darling, changed. We walked in on you crying while throwing your new clothes out the window, and you wore your dresses and heels for the rest of your childhood right up till now. We never did know what happened, but we want you to know, that nothing is wrong with you, you can wear what you want, be who you want, as long as you’re happy. Dress for yourself Galinda not for others. We love you and we are so proud of you.
We cannot wait to see you and Elphaba over the break.
With love
Momsie and Popsical.

Glinda didn’t realise she was crying until the ink on the letter smudged. She would wipe her face, but the tears kept streaming. She didn’t like to think much about the past it only ever upset her. The harshness of her teacher and school peers calling her wrong, saying that she and her parents were wrong for the way she thought. They were part of the reason it took her longer than it should have to realise she was only interested in women, interested in Elphaba. But she wasn’t wrong for that so was she not, wrong, for this? Or was she still wrong?

The tears eventually subsided, she went inside, hiding the note in her nightstand. She sat on her bed admiring her sleeping her girlfriend. She won’t understand, Glinda herself barely understood and right now she was too exhausted to think about it anymore. Laying down, she smiled when Elphaba latched onto her immediately, kissing her forehead, the blonde drifted of to a restless sleep.

She awoke hours later, to what she could get use to for the rest of her life, Elphaba walking out of the bathroom in just a towel, braids drawn up into a bun to keep dry. “Is it my birthday?” she said smiling widely. Elphaba gave her a bright grin that left her breathless.

“Good morning my sweet” the older girl walked over to her, leaning down for a kiss but the blonde had other ideas tugging her girlfriend down onto the bed, letting Glinda delight in the shocked squeal that left her throat. Just as Glinda was going to pull her girlfriend into another kiss they were interrupted by a loud impatient knock on the door. Glinda groaned annoyed as she got up making Elphaba laugh.

“What?!” she barked at a startled Fiyero.

“Woah Glin what has got you so cranky?” his voice annoyingly amused as he looked past her. “And hello Elphaba” he winked at her, laughing when she flipped him off. He walked in, ignoring Glinda’s protests, Elphaba was already back in the bathroom.
“What are you doing here Fiyero? We just got up” she asked walking to her dress rack fighting the urge to look at the pants in the back of her closet, she looked back at Fiyero who stood there with a contemplating look.

“You just woke up? It’s past 12, and you’re in night clothes G wow how scandalocius” winking at her meanwhile Glinda’s eyes widened.

“Past 12?? Elphaba, why didn’t you wake me?” Glinda called out to her love.

Her emerald love came back fully dressed, effortlessly beautiful, as usual, but her eyes held concern.

“You were tossing and turning alot last night, I wanted you to get some rest” The blonde’s eyes widened Oz now she’s worried Elphaba and Glinda knew that she wouldn’t let it go, she looked over at Fiyero and realised he was now looking at her concerned.

“Oh Oz you two, I’m fine just must’ve had a little too caffeine and it kept me active in my sleep I suppose, now moving on, let me get ready” she punctuated her sentence with a firm kiss to Elphaba and a shoulder nudge to Fiyero.

Walking into the bathroom, Glinda felt her eyes burning, no no no hold it together Upland she thought rushing through her morning routine Oz she really needs to a hold of herself plastering on her best Glinda Upland smile she left the bathroom, inwardly wincing when both her girlfriend and best friend noticed instantly the falseness of it all.

“Well don’t just stand there, there is fun to be had let’s go” she said clapping her hands together opening the door widely for her girlfriend, “after you m’lady” smiling when Elphaba let out a snort of laughter.

“Why thank you, kind sir” she stopped short, her breath catching, blushing brightly, Elphaba didn’t notice any of it, but Fiyero did, she shook her head when he tilted his head at curiously, walking away from quickly linking arms with Elphaba as they left for town.

The group Phannee, ShenShen, Nessa, Boq, Fiyero, Elphaba and Glinda took up the whole street. Filtering in and out of the shops, it wasn’t until after lunch that Fiyero was able to catch Glinda. She tried to avoid him, but it was useless when it came to the bookstore, Elphaba ran in without her and before she could follow, Fiyero grabbed her arm gently, nodding further up. Her hands shook slightly as they walked to a quieter place.
“What’s going on Glinda?” his voice soft yet leaving no room to avoid answering. She wrung her hands. He was the only person she couldn’t lie to apart from Elphaba.

“You know my parents send me outfits, they send me dresses” he nodded “well this time I got a dress, very pretty but they also sent me a suit, a casual yet smart.” Her eyes watered, she could see the confusion across his face.

“Why a suit? You’ve always said you wouldn’t be caught in pants ever” his tone wasn’t accusing just unable to understand. She pulled out the letter from her bag and gave it to him, urging him to read it with a nod. She watched his facing looking for signs of disgust only for him to look up and smile gently, pulling her in for a hug and that made her crack, she sobbed, wetting his shoulder with tears. After awhile she calmed down pulling away smiling at him in thanks.
“So why did you stop wanting to wear them?” his voice soft.

She scoffed “Whilst my parents were obviously okay with it, the rest of Gillikin was not. They were cruel that day, and I knew it would break my parent’s heart if they knew what was said so it was easier to pretend and it still is, well…”

“Your parents sent your suit” He surmised. Nodding again she looked back at the bookstore knowing her love was still hunting down the rare books. “So what exactly is it? I’m sorry I am trying to ask respectfully but I don’t know..” he was cut off by the blondes laughter. He smiled, it was the first time she had laughed genuinely all day.

“I don’t know the best way I can describe it is, some days I love my dresses, being called pretty, being called Elphaba’s girlfriend and other days I just…I just want to wear pants, I want to be I don’t know Fiyero I really don’t know” she started to feel that familiar panic again until he held her shoulders.

“You don’t have to know G, like your parents said you can where what you want and be who you want I don’t care about that, I don’t care what your gender is” she looked towards the bookstore again and that’s when he understood “and she won’t care either, what she does care about is that her Glinda is happy or not.” They watched as the group left the bookstore struggling some books.

“What’s the bet that they are all Elphaba’s?” Fiyero laughed at the resigned look in Glinda’s face. “Oz, she’s going to drain my wallet, how can you drain an heiress?” laughing at her again.

“You look like you’ve been hit G” was all he could say “You spend heaps of your money before her and now you are going to broke with her”

“Honestly if I didn’t love that woman” blowing out a laugh when Elphaba spotted them smiling widely. She couldn’t stop the smile forming on her face either.

“How about being a perfect gentleman and help her with the books?” he asked laughing but an understanding smile. She nodded in thanks. She walked up to her girlfriend, kissing her and smoothly reaching for her books to hold.

“My sweet, you don’t to have to carry them” Elphaba protested but it fell flat when all the blonde did was hold them closer and let her girlfriend lead them away from the store.
Night fell as the group parted ways with the blonde speaking quietly to Fiyero, not realising that she left Elphaba to walk by herself to caught up in the distraction that now was her secret with the prince. She walked closer only hearing the last bit of the conversation.

“Thank you Fi, I think I need to before I shut it down.” Glinda said gratefully.

“You need what?” She jumped at the sound of her Elphie. She took in her girlfriend, she noticed her look and how she carried herself. Elphaba was insecure. About what? She had no idea.

“Nothing Elphie, let’s head back to the dorm. See you tomorrow Fi” she called, walking along side the woman of emerald. She was quiet, withdrawn. They got through the door, usually Elphaba would take the books to put them away in her order of things, but she went straight to the restroom. Glinda sat on her bed, fidgeting Elphaba was upset with her, there’s no way she had heard Fiyero and her. She was pulled from her thoughts when said girl walked out and headed straight to her bed without a word. No, they will not go to bed like this she thought.

“Elphaba” she was ignored. “Elphaba Thropp” once again met with silence.
“Okay, you’re upset with me. Tell me what I did so I can fix it. Please Elphie” she was on her knees next to the bed, she heard a sigh before the girl turned to face her.

“What were you and Fiyero talking about? Today in town and just before?” her eyes were narrowed and suspicious filled with what looked like jealousy.

“It was nothing important Elphie” she tried but she knew that her little bookworm wasn’t going to let this go.

“Fine, so if it isn’t important, then why keep it a secret I mean I’m your girlfriend” Glinda stood back away when Elphaba stood abruptly gesturing with her hands. “I should know you’re my girlfriend, not his Glinda. So what is it?” Glinda flinched at the shouting and being called her girlfriend. She liked it sometimes but not right now she’d prefer something else like oh Oz she thought.

“Glinda” she heard her name again. But she was too disoriented. She blacked out.

Waking up she was surrounded by a nurse, Elphaba and Fiyero, looking around, she realised she was in the infirmary.

“What happened?” she questioned.

“You collapsed my sweet, I had no idea what happened, you were sick and you didn’t tell me, I found out from Fiyero.” Glinda shot a questioning glance at the man before shooting him a thankful smile. It was her secret to tell and he made sure of that.

“I’m alright Elphie, I must be dehydrated” she started but noticed Elphaba starting to get upset, medical supplies started to rattle. “Elphaba I am okay I promise” she took her hand, squeezing it tightly, noticing that her hand was clammy. She called for the nurse, who assured both her and Elphaba that it was safe for her to leave. Fiyero walked them both back. Murmuring her thanks to him, she walked them both in settling her girlfriend on her bed. At the tight squeeze, she pressed a soft kiss to green skin, as she left to grab a wet cloth. The silence was thick between the two and Glinda knew she was the one who had to break it. So she sat on the floor in front of Elphaba gathering all her courage.

“Elphie, I’m not sick, I am keeping a secret though. Fiyero only figured it out today. I promise, you are the first person I ever want to tell things to, but this was, delicate, in a sense of the word.” She looked anywhere but at her eyes unsure how this was going to end. She might not even have a girlfriend in the end, but she powered on. “Did I ever tell you as a child my parents made my clothes?” at her girlfriend’s nod she continued “They still do, they send me all those pretty dresses I wear everyday”

“Glinda I already know this” Elphaba interrupted.

“Baby I really need you to not interrupt this is already difficult” she aimed for firm, but it came out pleading, either way she nodded. “But as a kid I was curious, my mother designed a handsome outfit for a young man, and I got curious. So I stayed and watched as my father put her design to reality, he showed me all the steps. I got so excited, I loved it so much, I asked to try it on” her eyes watered slightly when Elphaba squeezed her hands gently, clearing her throat, “I felt so good it in it, just like my dresses I loved it so much, and my parents thought I looked cute and I looked amazing in it.” She aimed for cockiness but it came out whimsical. “Anyway I was so excited I told everyone at my school, how I got to wear a fancy suit at home and that I could wear pants and help my Momsie garden without worrying about my dresses getting dirty. And well my parents were okay with it, no one else was, they said it was wrong, they said only boys wear pants and that I was wrong for it, even my teacher. I…” she choked up “I was so upset, they ripped the bottom of my dress, I ran straight home and just wanted to forget everything. But my parents, Oz my parents had designed a whole other wardrobe for me, this one for pants, and shirts alike, I loved them but I couldn’t have it so I threw them out my window sobbing” she lost her fight with tears, she finally gathered enough strength to look at her girlfriend who to her surprise was crying also. She was pulled into a tight hug, before remembering that she had more to say, pulling away, she shook her head when Elphaba opened her mouth.

“I had put this all aside, all to the back of mind, I mean I struggled to come to terms with my sexuality because of this, let alone whatever this is. But the other night when my parents sent me my normal dress, they had also sent me a suit, a little less formal but still. It brought back everything. All the feelings of it, I just fell in love with it but I didn’t let myself think much of it until today, when Fiyero noticed something was wrong. When I opened the door for you to leave today, I said ‘after you m’lady’ and you had said ‘thank you kind sir’. There was nothing to it, a little banter between us, but when you said it. It just felt right, I froze” Glinda watched Elphaba carefully. “He caught me and questioned me when you were in the bookstore, he had questions, but he helped me. He has even offered for me to try his clothes on days I feel like that”

“Like that? Only some days?” her girlfriend questioned.

“Well, some days I do love my dresses and being pretty and being acknowledged as your girlfriend, but other days I feel, I would enjoy pants and being acknowledged as ummm…” Glinda wondered off.

“Acknowledged as my boyfriend?” Elphaba filled in, making the blonde’s jaw drop, as she realised that yes, she would love that. She couldn’t speak anymore so she just nodded. Her heart broke, when Elphaba nodded and hummed before getting off her bed, closing her eyes, she prayed the ground would swallow her whole.

“Try it on” her eyes shot open, there Elphaba stood with her new outfit in her hands. Glinda reached for it unsurely before swallowing dryly, when the older girl nodded. Gripping it tightly she walked to the bathroom, Oh Oz it has been such a long time. Is Elphaba really okay with this? Does she still want me? All these thoughts were racing through her head, as she dressed. Wiping her eyes, she realised she didn’t even know how to tie her tie. Walking out to Elphaba, without looking in the mirror, she kept her eyes down even when she heard her girlfriend gasp.

“Are you not going to try the tie?” she heard. She looked up at Elphaba with watery eyes and a small hesitant but sheepish smile.

“I don’t know to do tie it” She answered, her voice no louder than a whisper. Elphaba hummed, her face still stoic, as she came closer gesturing for the tie. Silence filled the room as she made quick work of it, before a pleased smile overcame her face.

“Hmmm you know, you look a million times better than Fiyero in this” Elphaba said with so much certainty and adoration, Glinda couldn’t help but cry. Letting her girlfriend hold her tightly as she let everything she had been feeling out. She didn’t know how lost in her own identity she really was until this. She whined a little when Elphaba pulled away, chuckling softly.

“Come on handsome, lets check you out” The blonde felt heat flush her whole body and she knew her once pale face was burning red. Holding her breath, she walked to the mirror, nervous, holding Elphaba’s hand tightly, before letting out her breath in utter surprise. She adjusted the jacket, messed with the tie, turned slightly to check the pants out, she looked great.

“How do feel?” she heard from next to her.

“I feel like me, I feel like me, I look astoundifying” she said with no filter making her girlfriend laugh fondly.

“You really do, like I said, better than Fiyero, definitely more handsome” Elphaba stood in front of her, Glinda smile, grateful for the girl in front of her.

“You really don’t care?” Glinda asked her still a little uncertain.

Elphaba smiled with a glint in her eyes, “Let me show you that I really don’t care” Glinda went in for a kiss but was stopped with a hand wrapped around her tie. “One thing, the tie stays on” and that was it for Glinda.
