Cuddle the nightmare away (Hurt/comfort, fluff)
Galinda woke up to some weight on her chest, an arm wrapped around her waist and her legs tangled with another. Now normally this would freak someone out, but it was just Elphaba. Elphie. Her best friend. Who she wants more with but she's trying to be paitent. Green skin wrapped around her pale one seems like a dream, but sadly she knows that her Elphie only comes to her when she's had a nightmare, so she squeezes her into her chest a little tight provide security to the girl who had never had it. It had become a pattern the two girls were in, Galinda sort've became a shield against Elphaba's nightmares, and well if it gets the older girl into her bed for a cuddle well that's Galinda's business.
All this started when the blonde woke up to sounds of distress coming from her roomate. She had no idea what to do while they loathed each other, she couldn't let her suffer through it. So she walked over and grabbed her hand gently, not caring how clammy it was, tracing patterns on her palm, trying her best to sooth the green girl. She hadnt realised she fell asleep until a light tug on her hair woke her up startled. She blinked quickly getting use to the light as well as stretching her neck having fallen asleep sitting up on floor her back against the bed, it wasn't until another tug this time on her hand, she realised she was still holding the green girls hand. Looking up she was met with confused eyes on her.
"What are you doing?" Elphaba's voice was low and gruff as if she had also just woken up herself.
"Nothing, you were just muttering and moving alot in your sleep, I couldn't sleep so I came over here hoping you could calm down a bit, but I must've fallen asleep." Galinda felt her face grow hot, groaning at the ache in her muscles as she stood, hoping her roomate left it as base level as possible. But she knew she wouldn't.
"You came over here? You knew I had a nightmare and you came to help me?" Galinda hated how vulnerable the girl sounded, she hated that she wasn't use to this kind of thing, and she was going to say so, but she did what Galinda did best and brushed it off.
"Don't mention it. Literally. I only did it because it woke me up." She tried to be as nonchalant as possible but looking at the dark haired girl, she knew she was caught. But Elphaba thankfully moved on. The two rushed around getting ready for classes not speaking a word until Elphaba left first.
"Galinda?" The blonde hummed in response.
"Thank you" Galinda turned her face to the woman at the door, admiring the dark green flush that crept up to her cheeks. Smiling gently, Galinda gave a small nod in acknowledgement. And that was only the first.
The second time it happend, was the day Dr Dillamond found the message on the board, Galinda watched as Elphaba stayed behind to help the professor feeling a ghost of a smile flicker across her face. She was so sweet, she cared so much, but no-one gives her the chance. Galinda frowns at herself, knowing she's one of those people who hurt her.
Later in their dorm, Galinda stayed awake a little longer than her green roomate. She watched as she came back late, mud on her boots though the blonde would deny any attention she paid to the girl. She had fallen alseep quite quickly, not making too much ruckus, as all her energy was drained. The blonde was sketching building plans, when a whimper brought her out of her concentration, she looked straight up to Elphaba, to check, there was no other sound, so she resumed her designs. Another whimper and the sound of sheets rustling around in the small bed, Galinda's eyebrows furrowed as she frowned, 'was her roomate having another nightmare?'
"Elphaba?" Only silence followed, the blonde watched the girl a little longer. 'Maybe she was a little startled' she thought, hoping that there would be no more of it for the rest of the night. Switching off her lamp, her thoughts echoed loudly in her head. 'She wasn't suppose to care, they weren't friends, it isn't her responsibility. A loud whine, resembling a frightened animal, had the blonde bolting up and rushing to other girl. She was soaked in sweat and shaking, doing her best not to startle the girl, Galinda placed her hand gently on her.
"Elphaba?" Whimpers grew louder.
"Elphaba honey you need to wake up" the younger girl was growing increasingly worried, she just wanted to ease her pain, so she slid into the small bed with Elphaba, hoping the older girl wouldn't be too mad at her. She jumped a little when Elphaba squeezed onto her, wrapping her body entirely around Galinda's as if holding onto her was safe. The blonde's eyes widened, nervous as she wrapped her arms more comfortably around her, pressing a soft kiss to the green skin against her chest. Laying there, she felt her stomach swoop, giddy that Elphaba found safety with her, even if she was unconscious, she didn't even question it until a realisation was made. "Fuck, I like Elphaba" her words echoed around the room, Galinda worried it might’ve woken the girl sleeping on her chest, but she laid there peacefully unaware of the turmoil the blonde was experiencing. It wasn't too long after that Galinda fell asleep also.
Galinda woke up startled when she heard a thump against the floor, she sat up quickly, her back protesting from sleeping on a rough mattress. Looking down there was a blushing mess of a girl, who tried looking anywhere else but at her.
"You okay?" Galinda couldn't stop a giggle at Elphaba's expense. And she couldn't believe it, Elphaba pouted in response, actually pouted. Who knew she could do that? 'Well I'm fucked' Galinda thought. Her realisation of the crush, made her more aware of everything the girl did, and now she saw the pouting, embarrassed part of Elphaba, she really couldn't stop the what she assumed was a dorky grin spreading across her face.
"Take a little trip there? Did you get me a post card?" The cheeky quip cost her a pillow to the face, and a muffled shut up came from Elphaba.
Her laughter died down when she noted the curiosity in her roomates eyes, it was now the blonde's turn to blush.
"Why are you in my bed Galinda?" It didn't sound like she was mad, hopefully. She really didn't want to embarrass her, she also could think of a good lie.
"You were thrashing around in your sleep, it kept me up, so I came over and it wasn't until I got in bed that you settled, so I just stayed. I'm sorry" she did try her best to keep her voice nonchalant as if it wasn't a big deal.
"I'm sorry I kept you up" that wasn't what Galinda expected her to say. "I'll try my best not to wake you again" Elphaba quickly stood up, the younger girl was taken aback at how small her (friend? Maybe) roomate tried to make herself as if she's a problem. Galinda was quick to fix that.
"Hey no, it's okay, I was already awake, it's no big deal"
"Why? Why do you help me? You don't even like me" the last part was said quietly but Galinda heard the hurt in the words.
"I don't know why Elphaba. I know I've been an asshole, since we met, I'm not going to deny it. When I heard that first nightmare, it threw me a little bit I think. The mask of indifference always made you seem unbreakable I suppose. I know that's not true, but then when I held your hand and you had calmed down, I felt good, that I helped you, that maybe your subconscious trusts me and I want that. I want to be someone you can trust and rely on. So if you do have nightmares whether you wake up or not I'll be there until you tell me no. I am sorry for how I've treated you Elphaba" Galinda wasn't quite comfortable with how vulnerable and honest she was but she knew she had no choice, if she wanted the girl to trust her. She waited for Elphaba to respond, fidgeting with her hands to keep herself grounded, she was caught off guard when she was pulled into a hug. On instinct she wrapped her arms around her in return, squeezing harder when she felt the older girl tears on her neck. No more words were exchanged both happy to move forward.
After that, both girls found themselves in eachothers orbit, unable to be without the other for very long. They shared a bed more often than not, Galinda offering her bed everytime as it was the more comfy than Elphaba's. They became best friends quite quickly much to the schools shock. It was rare that the blonde didn't wake up when Elphaba had a nightmare, but she made it clear to her friend that she was more than happy to lay with her even if was asleep, something both girls took advantage of.
Movement on her chest brings her out of the memories how it all started, she smiled at the girl on her chest who looked up with sleepy but happy eyes. Galinda reached out with a palm onto her cheek, gently running her thumb on it, making the green girl flush a deep forest colour.
"You okay Elphie? Bad dream?" Her voice low afraid to break the peace around their dorm. She wasn't expecting Elphaba to tense up and squeeze her tighter. "Elphie? Darling I can't breathe, was it really bad? You should've woke me" she felt Elphaba shake her head as she mumbled something against her chest. "Elphaba I didn't hear that, talk to me honey" the blonde had one hand cradling green cheeks and the other rubbing comforting circles on her back. Once again she was shocked when Elphaba jerked up, nervous eyes looking anywhere but at her best friend.
"I didn't have a nightmare Glin I just wanted to cuddle, your safe, I like safe and comfy" the blonde nearly giggled at the look on the girls face as if it physically hurt to say those words. "Look I like you as in like you in a way to kiss you or hug me whenever without nightmares being the reason and I.....oomf" Elphaba found herself on her back as she was crash tackled by an excited blonde, who resembling more of a happy toddler. She went to say more when Galinda kissed her, despite her bouncy energy the kiss was slow and deep, only breaking when their smiling forced them to part. "I like you too, I have for awhile now" it was now Elphaba's turn to lean in for a kiss. Pulling apart, Galinda laid back down on the bed tapping her chest "Alright cuddles, come on get in on this" Elphaba couldn't stop her eyes from rolling if she tried "Call me cuddles again, you can stay in my old bed and I will make you stay there understand?" Galinda just laughed at her pulling her close. This was good, this is what she never knew she wanted or needed.
