5 years old

Galinda Upland smiled as she watched a carriage approach the front driving. She was told by her parents that the Governor of Munchkinland was visiting, he has two daughters and one was her age. Galinda was a an outgoing girl, always a smile on her face, but she also just wanted to be liked by everyone, so she hoped this family would like her. The blonde had put her favourite pink dress on and her best ballet flats, her golden hair was softly curled, courtesy of her momsicle.

She squealed in excitement when the carriage stopped, watching as, who she assumed was the Governor stepped out, followed by a green girl around her age and a younger girl who was in a wheelchair. Before she could stop herself she walked up to the green girl, and with all the charm she had possessed (which was none) spoke.

"You're green" her tone was one of curiosity not judgement, but it seemed the girl in front of took it as such, as she looked away from the blonde. Galinda didn't let that stop her. "I'm Galinda Upland, from the Upper Uplands, I'm five, do you want to be friends?" Her eyes were shining. Before the girl in front of her could respond they were interrupted by her popsicle.

"Galinda dear, let them all come inside." His voice was firm but laced with affection. All Galinda could do was smile and nod before reaching her hand out, and pulling her new friend inside with her. "Galinda, this is Governor Thropp" she nodded and said hi, listening as he spoke up. "Well Miss Galinda this is my pride and joy Nessarose, as you can see, she is absolutely precious, I'm sure you both will get along well." She noticed he hadn't introduced the green skinned girl, so she stepped up.

"It's nice to meet you Nessarose" smiling before turning to face the other girl, her smile beaming "What's your name?"

"Elphaba" The blonde noticed her voice was quiet, she sounded quite tense.

"Elphaba" she tried the name on her tongue a few times before shaking her head. "Elphie! I'm going to call you Elphie, we're going to be best friends" and for the first time since she saw the girl, she watched as a small smile graced the girls face.

The girls grew up together over the next couple years. Every summer, Elphaba's father would send her to the Uplands, so he wouldn't have to 'deal' with her.

Galinda was the only one she ever confided in.

10 years old.

"Elphie, it's not right, you should stay here all the time, my parents love you" the two girls held hands as they were on the porch hammock, whilst serious, the blonde still was fixing her best friends hair. It was barely taken care of during the year.

"It's fine Galinda, it doesn't hurt anymore, it's not like he physically hurts me. It's okay come on let's go to your library." She was always quick to brush off her friends concerns, and the blonde let her.

"Ugghh really?? I don't want to go to the book place" she knew she was going to go with her Elphie but not without whining, plus her Elphie always smiled when she got her way to library, so the blonde always let her.

A few hours later, found the two best friends giggling in Galinda's bedroom, telling secrets, making silly jokes, Elphaba even letting Galinda dress her up. They both faced the door when a knock came through.

"Ahh young ladies, I do believe it's getting late, I assume all this giggling means you're about to go to sleep" Galinda's father chuckled as he came in, messing with his daughters hair affection in the touch.

"Of course popsicle, we were just saying goodnight" Elphie laughed loudly. Galinda couldn't lie to save her life and her father knew that.

"Alright my darlings, into bed you both go." Smiling at the both of them as they scrambled into bed and cuddling up together. The girls grinned when Galinda's mother walked in as well. "We love you...both of you" Elphaba's eyes welled up, even more so when her friends parents pressed a soft kiss to her forehead like they do to Galinda, they shut off the light as they left.

The room was silent until Galinda voice broke it. "Promise me we'll always be best friends Elphie, me and you against Oz" the green skinned girl shuffled closer pressing her face into Galinda's neck for the millionth time in their friendship. "I promise" and with that the two fell sound asleep.

17 years old

The two girls had not seen eachother in the past couple of years. Elphaba's father had stopped sending her, and never spoke of the Uplands. The girls missed eachother dearly.

Galinda was always so worried when it came to her bestfriend. She hadnt seen her in years, no way of contact, her parents tried but nothing.

"Momsicle, Popsicle is she coming this summer?" Her parents hearts broke hearing the dejected sound in the dearest daughter voice, she already knew the answer. None of the Uplands were prepared for the following night.

Banging on the door just after supper alerted the family at the desperate sound, all three rushing. Pulling the door opened they stood shocked at their new guest. Elphaba. She was standing there tears dripping, her bag with her bruises on her face. It took only a quick second before Galinda pulled her best friend inside, "Bring her bags please Popsicle" she continued to walk her friend to the closest bathroom, pulling her in for a hug, gently, heart breaking as her friend collapsed into her, heart wrenching sobs breaking her. The blonde let her get it all out. After a while, the black-haired girl settled sobs quieting down to hiccups. She let Galinda clean her face, and sit herself on the counter, she had to chuckle making the blonde raise an eyebrow. "I didn't think you'd ever be able to lift me, you're so small Glin" they both giggled. "Well I am fit, but you my darling are far too light, it's not healthy" Elphaba looked down. Galinda gently guided her face back up with two fingers under her chin. "What happend Elphie?" Her voice was low and careful.

"It's Nessa's birthday and he spoiled her, as usual. I was suppose to bring the cake out but I tripped. It was such a stupid thing Galinda. It was so stupid, but he snapped, it was light everything he had ever thought just boiled over in that moment, he lost control, I lost consciousness. When I woke up, my bags were packed and I was already outside the house. So I came to the only place that really felt like home. Here." Galinda felt her blood boil, she's never been so angry in her life. All she has ever wanted is her Elphie to be safe and now she's broken and bruised and the only thing she can do is hole her and keep her safe from now on (and kill Governor Thropp but that's minor details).

"Come pretty girl, let's get you changed into something comfortable, some food into you and let me hold you and keep you safe" Elphaba let Galinda guide her out of the bathroom and upstairs to her room. The blonde had to stop herself from leaving and paying a not so nice visit to munchkinland as she saw more bruises along Elphaba's body. After dressing in comfortable nightwear, she pressed a soft kiss against her friends forhead, letting her know she'll be back with food.

Hours passed and Galinda kept her promise, holding her best friend tight into her, making sure she was with her and safe. She was never going to allow someone to hurt her Elphie again.

24 years old.

Thinking about it now, the two laugh when they realised that it was a surprise to no-one when they started dating years ago. They went to Shiz University together, graduating, Elphaba on her way to become the youngest Animal Right lawyer and Galinda, a designer well known for her designs being animal free. They moved to the city of Oz, buying an apartment, working hard, and settling down together. One Thursday night was different to others and Galinda was shaking with nerves waiting for her love to arrive home.

After years together, the blonde was finally going to propose. Their friends were giving her hell for waiting so long. Rushing around she made sure the food was cooked to perfection before starting desert, she had set up their dining area beautifully, simple yet elegant. She panicked a little when she heard the door open.

"My sweet, it smells amazing, what have you been cooking?" Elphaba came in, her eyes widening she took in veiw.

"Hi pretty girl, come sit" galinda pulled her girlfriend to her chair pulling it out and then tucking it in. Kissing her softly and smiling "I hope you're okay with spinach and mushroom risotto" winking knowing it her girls favourite.

"Yes, what's the occasion Glin, you only cook when you want something" A teasing look in Elphaba's eye.

"How dare you? I cook for you on general days sometimes" she grabbed her chest in a dramatic offended look. Pausing for a second they both laughed at her dramatics.

After dinner, they sat there talking about general things that had happened throughout the day, before getting interrupted by a burning smell and the smoke alarm going off. Galinda's eyes widened "Shit! The brownies!" She rushed to kitchen not realising she dropped the box with the ring on the floor. Elphaba picked it up, smiling when she realised what it was.

"Thanks for the help Elphie" The blonde came back out, smelling of smoke and burnt chocolate. "What are you doing..?" Her jaw dropped when she noticed what her Elphie was holding. "Right...did you look inside?" Smiling when her girlfriend shook her heard. Walking over she gently plucked the box from her hand, then helping the grinning girl to her seat kissing her cheek when she saw that she struggled to sit still.

"Well this certainly wasn't the way I wanted to do this, there was suppose to be brownies and not you finding the box" galinda chuckled finding the whole amusing. "Here we go...we met almost twenty years ago...holy shit..anyway, I was this young excitable girl..." "You still are" "shut up Elphie I'm trying to propose here...thank you. Summer was my favourite season because I knew you would be arriving. My entire life lit up green. In the best way possible. When you rocked up at my doorstep, hurt and scared, I had never felt that much anger before, I knew then and there, that I would never let anyone hurt you again. You are the smartest, caring, loving, kindest person I've been lucky to spend the past twenty years adoring. I wish to adore you the rest of my life, if you would do me the honour. So here I am, burnt brownies, smelling of smoke, frazzled from the humidity in this apartment...by the way we really need to get the AC fixes...anyway nothing means more to me than you. So with all that said...Elphaba Thropp will you marry me, and become Elphaba Upland? I mean bonus is you get to spend your life with this perfection what more can you want" she finished with a wink, making the woman in front of her chuckle, nodding quickly a quiet 'yes' was heard, followed by a crashing kiss, barely meeting lips as both were smiling way to big to kiss properly. Galinda pulled away much to her now fiancé’s chagrin, she opened the box and slipped the ring onto her beautiful green finger. Elphaba gasped seeing small green and pink diamonds of the ring.

"I did good huh" a smug smile on the blondes face. Elphaba just rolled her eyes and kissed her once again love and passion filled both of them, whispered I love yous filled the space between them. Both looking forward to the future that awaits them
