His name was strong and warm, just as Lily’s was fierce and delicate at the same time.
Mary could remember a time when her name had been sweet, spoken from another mouth.
His hair fell messily into his face, ruffled and curling at the ends.
Hers was as bright as the first time May had seen it, shining and straight.
James’ eyes were brown and Lily’s were green, both just as bright and joyful as each other.
Mary’s eyes were cold now, watching the two of them sit together and laugh.
Their hands were intertwined and it hurt to watch.
Her hand was empty, but she could still remember a time when it had not been.
That time felt so long ago.
Lily was beautiful, oh so beautiful, and oh so far away.
They were still friends, but not like how they had been before. Mary would give anything to go back to then.
Still, the memory of Lily’s skin, soft as dreams, was worth every moment of pain.
And as Mary watched her, they caught eyes, and it felt like nothing could ever be so pretty again.
