Coops Become Dads

Today was the day. After months of applications, home visits, meeting with the birth mother, Rachel, as well as the adoption agency, today was the day they’d get to meet their baby. They just didn’t know it yet.

Remus has brought his phone into the gym with them during practice, worried about missing the call. The guys had all been giving them shit as they frequently went to check the screen. They had told everyone at the last Dumo party and everyone one had been so ecstatic for them. Remus and Sirius couldn’t believe how lucky they were.

Remus was just getting ready to spot Finn when he heard the tell-tale sound of his ringtone from next to his water bottle.

There was a silence that spread across the room as they all stared at the ringing phone. Sirius looked up from his weights, his eyes wide as he made eye contact with Remus across the room.

“Well someone better answer it.” Talker yelled, his hands thrown in the air.

Lunging across the room, Remus quickly clicks the accept button, “Hello?”

The entire room was silent as Remus held the phone to his ear, biting at his thumbnail nervously. Sirius walked over, his hands coming up to grab Remus’s free one.

“Yeah, of course. Of course. We’ll be right there. T-Thanks so much.” He murmured quietly before ending the call.

A hush fell over the room as his hands fell to his side, eager eyes on him from all sides.

“Was that- Was that Rachel?” Sirius asked quietly, squeezing Remus’s hand in his.

Remus couldn’t hold back the grin that spread across his face as he nodded, “She’s on her way to the hospital. Her water broke.”

Sirius laughed, pulling Remus to him as the other boys tackled them with congratulations.

“What’s going on here? Doesn’t look like much of a workout to me.” Moody grumbled as he came in.

Remus smiled, pulling away a bit to look at the other man, “Our baby is on the way!”

Everyone in the room that day swears they saw Moody smile… but he still denies it. “Well what the hell are you still doing here? Get going.”

The soon-to-be parents ran out, shouts of congrats and good luck following them as they went to the locker room to grab their things. Remus pulled a pair of joggers over his shorts, gathering his things before he realized he was the only movement in the room.

Sirius stood frozen, staring at nothing and everything all at once. Remus could tell his mind was elsewhere, thinking of another place and time.

“Pads?”

There was a pause as Sirius blinked, eyes moving to Remus as he let out a shaky breath.

“What if I’m not a good father?” Remus’s heart broke at the scared look in Sirius’s eyes, the worry. He could hear the unasked question. What if I’m just like them?

Quickly setting his things down, Remus grabbed the taller man’s hands, intertwining their fingers to pull him closer, “I know this is scary. It’s a fucking scary thing, I’m terrified. But we’re going to get through this together, okay?” His voice cracked as he spoke, but he continued. “All you have to do is love this baby, this child that’s ours. And I know that won’t be hard for you because you have so much love inside you despite the shit you went through. You will love and support them, and that’s all you can do. All we can do. We’ve got this, Pads. We’re ready.”

Sirius sniffled, tugging Remus in for a hug, “We are ready, mon loup.”

“I love you so much.”

“I love you too. Always. Now let’s go get our baby.”
