Well, he couldn't do most things to resolve this situation.
As a baby, Light could act cute. Acting was his forte.
But again, he doesn't know how old he is. Looking at his hands and body movement available, his age should be somewhere between 12 - 18 months. Acting as a realistic baby was difficult if he didn't know his age. Acting cute when he can't act like a realistic infant was even more so.
Not if he doesn't want to be associated with the term 'freak'.
It takes a very careful balance to be exceptional while not being a 'freak'. And it seems like someone in this family wasn't particularly good at it.
Light couldn't blame them. He himself needed a few years to perfect that act and he was Yagami Raito.

His mind was conflicted between thinking in Japanese and thinking in English. Another effect of a Japanese soul being in an English infant's body.
None of which changed the fact that he doesn't know how to act like a real infant in a body of an unknown age without being labeled a 'freak'.
