The man, this woman's husband going by the previous pet name used, stood over the woman's shoulder and read the letter. He placed one hand on her shoulder. In support? Light concludes the letter's shock and grief was caused by a personal tragedy for the woman, not the man.
The woman looked at him. There were a lot of emotions in her eyes but one was very familiar.
"So you're just a freak like her, are you?" she asked harshly. But her eyes were moist. Jealousy laced her words but their tremble belied her sadness.
So the vindication felt previously must be because of something she wanted but didn't have or was denied. And that she now considers it for the good that she hadn't.
A sour grapes situation.
