Chapter 4

Dazai took a deep breath before knocking on the door. Nakahara had somehow gotten her number and asked her to come over. Honestly, Dazai didn't remember much because she was so excited to just see Nakahara. The door swung open after a couple seconds, revealing a, somehow, even prettier Nakahara than normal. The sight made Dazai realize how much school uniforms hold girls back in their beauty. Nakahara had her hair tied into two loose braids, hanging over her shoulders. A crop top barely covered her chest, and she wore an unzipped sweater to keep her warm with low waisted jeans, leaving very little to the imagination 'down there'. Dazai was in full on lesbian panic. "Hey, wanna come in?" Nakahara asked after a moment. The brunette quickly nodded in agreement.

Nakahara led Dazai up to her room. "I was thinking I could doll you up, since you want to be a cheerleader and all." the ginger's tone of voice was different than the one she typically used at school. She sounded much more bored and unimpressed, which made Dazai feel guilty.

"What does that mean?" Dazai asked nervously, sitting down on the edge of Nakahara's bed.

"I want to do your hair and makeup." the other girl explained as she sat down at her vanity, checking herself in the mirror before picking out a handful of different makeup products.

"Yeah, go ahead." the brunette agreed happily, watching Nakahara closely. The ginger sat down next to the other girl, gently grabbing her face, making her look down at her. A soft blush crossed Dazai's face, feeling Nakahara's hold on her. Nakahara whispered orders at Dazai over the course of a half an hour, doing her makeup in almost complete silence. However, the silence didn't seem deafening, rather it was comforting. Both girls could sit together in silence with ease, not feeling unease or uncomfort. When Nakahara released her hold on Dazai's face, the brunette snapped back to reality.

"You look gorgeous." Nakahara complimented gently, showing Dazai herself in a handheld mirror.

Dazai stared at her reflection for a moment, bewildered that she was looking at herself. She looked gorgeous but uncanny to her own eyes. Nakahara ran a hand through Dazai's shoulder-length, brown hair. The touch startled the brunette at first, but she quickly melted into Nakahara's touch. She could feel the warmth radiating from the other girl's hand. "Thank you," Dazai said, "for all of this." She weakly gestured to her face.

"You're a very pretty girl, so I just want to highlight that." Nakahara responded gently, letting Dazai lean back onto her.

Dazai wasn't sure what to do in this situation. She never really had hung out with anyone before, but she could tell this interaction was too romantic to just be between friends. However, she also knew that Nakahara and Kunikida were dating. The thought snapped Dazai out of her high, and she abruptly sat up. "You're a good friend." Dazai mumbled nervously, tugging down on the bandages wrapped around her wrist.

Nakahara didn't respond for a moment. She just avoided eye contact with Dazai. After Dazai said nothing more, Nakahara spoke up, "Do you think this is something I'd do with any of my friends?"

"Yes?" Dazai guessed, honestly hoping that would be the answer. She didn't want to be different than anyone else. As much as she liked Nakahara, she didn't want to hurt Kunikida's feelings.

It all happened so fast. Nakahara was sitting away from Dazai, but now she was close, too close. The small distance between them closed even more when Nakahara kissed the other girl. It was a weird and messy kiss, since Dazai wasn't expecting it, nor did she know how to kiss. When Dazai pulled away, confusion struck her face. "This is not something I would do with just any of my friends." Nakahara stated, answering her own question.

Dazai was panicking. She didn't know what to do, but after a moment she did the only thing she knew how to do. Dazai fled from Nakahara's room, practically sprinting out the door.

It was the first time in a while that Dazai actually dreaded going to school. She didn't want to face Nakahara or Kunikida. Thankfully, her school day went smoothly, not seeing either of them. However, she did everything she could to avoid their regular walking paths, which made Dazai late to a few of her classes. Dazai was so close to the freedom of going home when what she saw made her stop in her tracks. Kunikida and Nakahara were arguing at the back of the school, not yelling but definitely arguing. Guilt twisted in the bystander. She didn't know what they were arguing about, but knowing what happened the previous evening it couldn't have not involved her. Dazai stood there frozen, out of sight from the other two girls, and she couldn't hear what they were saying. Honestly, she was grateful for that, because she didn't want to hear how her actions affected the two girls she had her heart set on, and she had kissed one of them. The realization finally set in, but that didn't last long when she saw Kunikida kiss Nakahara. Disappointment and jealousy flooded Dazai.

Each day that went by where Dazai saw Kunikida and Nakahara, a new, fresh knife stabbed at her heart, each more painful than the last. Dazai continued to avoid the couple, but it was difficult because they seemed to be popping up everywhere Dazai was. It was frustrating. She knew about their relationship, but it was different now. Now that Nakahara had kissed her. Now that neither girl was talking to her. Sometimes at night Dazai would stare at her phone, debating if she should text or call Nakahara, but she never did. How would she even explain the call. "I miss you." "I'm sorry for running out on you." "Hey, you should break up with your girlfriend and date me instead!" each idea that ran through Dazai's mind at night was more ridiculous than the last. Now, at school, even more ridiculous thoughts can through her head. She wanted to go up to the girls and apologize to Nakahara. She wanted to apologize to Kunikida, but maybe the blonde didn't even know about it. As her thoughts swirled with guilt and wonder, the final bell rang. After a moment, Dazai stood up and cautiously walked out the door. There stood Nakahara, who seemed to be showing up more than normal.

"Hey, Dazai, can we talk for a minute?" She asked, nervously looking around. It was an odd look on the girl who seemed to always be confident in everything she did.

"No thanks." Dazai responded without thinking as she walked past. Surprise flooded in Dazai, but she knew it was too late to turn back now. She didn't want Nakahara to hate her, but she also didn't want to stir up any more problems within the couple. Both girls meant so much to her, even if she didn't show it. When dazai finally looke behind her, she saw Nakahara's rejected expression. She felt bad for the girl, but she dragged herself into this mess, and only she could get herself out.
