Utter Contentment

Gently nudging the door open with her foot, Lily peered into the hallway before her. The evening sun peeked through the window, bathing her house in a pool of golden warmth. She bumped the door with her hip, nodding with satisfaction as she heard it click shut behind her. Lily unloaded the bags in her hand onto the wooden floor, taking a much needed breather. She realised she hadn’t carried that much weight since she was pregnant with Harry. Lily listened out, wondering vaguely why nobody had come bounding out to see her. Usually, after a full day of work and the grocery shop she had an excited toddler and an equally ecstatic husband hurrying towards her.

Lily abandoned the shopping bags in the hallway in favour of padding through the house to find out why it was so quiet. She poked her head through the kitchen doorway and surveyed the room: empty. Silently, she was thankful that they hadn’t attempted cookies today. Quietly, she made her way across to the living room to find the TV on low volume, displaying Harry’s favourite programme. On the sofa, she found what she was looking for, and a smile spread across her face.

Sprawled out inelegantly was James, fast asleep. Cuddled into his side and surrounded by his father’s arm, was a soundly sleeping Harry. Lily took in the scene with a beaming grin on her face. It still made her want to squeal with joy when she saw James and Harry like this. With the sun casting it’s golden rays on the room, the two of them didn’t need a blanket for warmth. Lily hadn’t stopped smiling. And nor would she. What she was seeing was simply utter contentment.
