First Love
“You should tell him, Remus,” Lily whispered through an audible sigh. She was quite frankly tired of trying to talk to him when all he was willing to do was stare at Sirius Black all day. “If you don't tell him, I might have to murderyou.”. Remus sheepishly took his gaze from across the room, focusing it on Lily. “Sorry Lils, you know I don’t mean to.”. Lily shook her head and ruffled Remus’ caramel hair lovingly. Remus smiled a half hearted smile at her. Lily could see in his face that Remus was completely and utterly in love with Sirius. She also knew that if he kept acting like an idiot about it, she might actually go insane.
“What do I do, Lils? I don't know if I can risk it.” Remus asked, whispering more to the desk more than to Lily. Lily wrapped her hand around Remus’, grasping it meaningfully. “Remus. Tell him. You at least owe yourself that.” she said. Remus looked at her, searching for sarcasm. Finding none, he squeezed her hand in reply and pulled a piece of scrap paper out of his pocket. Lily watched as he scribbled a note asking Sirius to meet him in the empty charms classroom at seven that night. Remus folded it neatly and gingerly cast a charm to send it over to Sirius’ table. Both Lily and Remus watched as the paper floated gracefully through the air to the table shared by Sirius, James and Frank.
Lily watched as the note landed decisively in front of Sirius. Remus turned his gaze back to his own table, leaving Lily to spectate. She watched carefully as Sirius unfolded the note, and scanned his eyes over the writing. James glanced over his friend’s shoulder to peer at the scrawl. The two boys simultaneously looked up and over to the table shared by Remus, Lily and Alice. Sirius gently refolded the note and tucked it into the pocket of his robe. James shared a knowing look with Lily, then turned back to his friend. Lily placed a comforting hand on Remus’ shoulder. “It’s going to be fine.”. Remus looked at her as if she was crazy.
“Lily, come on.” Remus practically hissed at her. Flustered, she shrugged her cardigan round her shoulders. “Well, I’m sorry! You only told me to come with you five minutes before the actual meeting, idiot!” She snapped back. Remus huffed at her and dragged her down the corridor by her arm. It had just struck seven when the two of them were reaching the charms corridor. Remus slowed down outside the classroom door, seeing that it was slightly ajar. Lily, not feeling particularly tolerant, pushed Remus through the door.
Sirius and James both looked up as the two of them walked in. Lily noticed that Sirius stood a little straighter when he saw Remus. She hid her smile.
“Hi.” Sirius said, quietly.
“Hi.” Remus replied, barely above a whisper.
James nudged his friend forward, so Lily mirrored him. Remus glared at her, before shuffling further toward Sirius. Lily watched as he began to speak to the dark haired boy. She watched Remus relax slightly as he continued into the conversation, before feeling eyes on her. She turned to see James Potter staring at her. Lily raised her eyebrow in question, to which James responded with a jerk of his head. He signalled that they should go to the back of the room to give Remus and Sirius some privacy. Lily nodded briefly, before quietly making her way to the window at the rear of the room.
“Do you reckon they’ll actually tell each other this time?” James asked her, watching as she seated herself on one side of the windowsill. Lily glanced at their friends across the room. She nodded again. “Yeah. I think it’s finally their time.”. James smiled gently, bringing himself to sit across from her. “Did Sirius ask you to come with him?” Lily asked him, suddenly feeling the heat of his body opposite hers on the window sill. “Yeah. Moral support and all that.”. Lily nodded, smiling. “Did Remus ask you?”. Lily nodded again.
Lily pretended not to notice as James inched his knee to touch hers. She directed her line of sight to the two boys across the classroom. The pair had moved closer together, and were conversing deeply. She even thought she saw a slight pink tinge to each of their faces. She turned back to James, a small smile on her features. Lily fought the urge to blush herself as she saw that James’ eyes lit up at her smile. She fiddled with the sleeve of her cardigan. James brought his hand down to hers, stilling it from fiddling. “Lils. Look.” He whispered, nodding towards their friends.
Lily subtly looked around to see Remus and Sirius hand in hand, still deep in conversation. Lily felt a glow of pride well up inside her. She turned back to James, beaming. “Finally.” She whispered. James nodded, an equally radiant smile on his face. Lily ignored the funny flip in her belly at the sight of it. “Well, now they’re finally together, how about we form a new power couple? What d’ya say Evans?” James said, a faint pink colouring on his cheeks as he leaned towards her. Lily felt James’ hand squeeze hers, and she smiled gently. “Not a chance, Potter.” She smiled, now feeling the blush that she couldn’t, and refused to, hide.
